Hmmmmmm...what's my best option? - Galaxy S II General

At the moment my phone is stock 2.3.3 and XWKE7 kernel and I have rooted it via odin. I'm wanting to upgrade but after trolling through threads there are a couple of options. Lite'ning 3.2 has just been released as well as SamFirmware post I9100XXKG3 (Android 2.3.4). To top it all off, there is an official update on Kies
Which would be my best option?

If you want eye candy try MIUI, else Cognition is very popular so you might wanna try that.
I'm curently on MIUI and apart from hd video rec pretty much everything works

I agree I'm using MIUI and I love it. The only think that I miss is hepatic feedback

I'm also very interested in the answer as I'm in almost the same position (minus the Kies update options)
dsmaori: I'm also in New Zealand, and I bought my SGS2 from JbHiFi so it's the Vodafone NZ version but I don't see the official update on Kies. Is yours the VodafoneNZ version or from overseas (or from an importer). I'm wondering why I don't get the Kies update. Also, what's the update to do you know?

[Q]Dutch XEN Official Gingerbread 2.3.3 stock rom

Hi guys. I saw on samfirmware that stock ROM CSC: I9000XENJV4 is available for download. I'm guessing this is Netherlands official GB 2.3.3 stock rom. Unfortunately if I open Kies to update my phone it says that I'm using the latest firmware (2.2.1 CSC = I9000XENJS3; I9000XWJS5).
Has anyone managed to update to GB directly using Kies to this version?
Thank you in advance for your answers.
I think I9000XENJV4 is only available on samfirmware at the moment. I'm also on 2.2.x and kies doesn't show updates.
Samfirmware was wrong, see his tweet some moments later:
@SamFirmware Update KIES for Netherlands not online yet. Galaxy S.
Samfirmware shows firmware-files - i just flashed my SGS with the xen-firmware and it works like a charm... So the update may not be available through KIES but the firmware files are available from SamFirmware.com
I do not understand this Samsung policy..why Nordic countries got it months before....testing purposes or what??
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I guess so. I used the Nordic version a long time
Thank you very much for your answers. I thought it is something wrong with my phone or kies since I cannot find for that specific CSC. In this case I'll be waiting a little bit more. Anyhow, it's weird that XEN firmware isn't out for gingerbread since NEE is out for more than one month.

Is there any way to know what are T9 and swype languages in this rom without having to flash it?
Or any other rom for that matter?
Startup sound is not smooth on my phone but interrupted. Same with voice announcements in the Osmand navigation program. MP3s play fine though.
Had some problems with widgets. Songbird needed readding the widget after program restart.
Jorte calandar had its widget not showing. After updating some fight to get it to work with the Google calendar, but that was not 2.3.3/JVH's fault.
I'm on GT-9000 / 2.3.3 stock /I9000XXJVO/GINGERBREAD.XWJVH/ stock kernel at the moment still as well.
Used the last voodoo before on Froyo but I'm not too keen on flashing anything right now right away to root again. I'd love to get voodoo on it again (mainly because of the audio features and obviously the lagfix) however the latest voodoo kernel for gingerbread on JVH stll seems to be based on older sources then the one samsung just released from what i've read.
As soon as there is a stable Voodoo (without the word "hack" in it) for JVH, i'm flashing

Mine worked before and still do, but a friend of mine has one that didn't have the 3 button combo so im interested to see what'll happen there.
Dit yours never work or did they stop working after a custom rom?
3 button combo indeed start working after this update
I just checked mine, after reading the thread and yes I can confirm mine never worked before but after this update to 2.3.3,it started working.
That's nice.

That's because the gingerbread update contains the SBL (Secondary Boot Loader).
The sbl is responsible for the 3-button combo.

I've got the Sheep ROM.
How would I go about getting and installing this? I can't do OTA upgrades because they don't come because I have a Custom ROM.
I can't do Kies, because it says it can't do SW updates.
Are you using a Custom ROM?
I wiped all (which you must do if coming from an odex'd rom) and installed Cassies V4 Rom with the new build and modem....then Abyssnote kernel?
Even without kernel...you can tell right off the build is a big stepup.
Don't think I answered your?
There's a thread in Dev section that has the link to the files

You can put on your phone and flash from recovery.

This soft is an improvement. It's far from satisfactory( android is still choppy as hell comparing to other OSes) but it's a step in the right direction.
I can report a better Wi-Fi range - I'm getting signal in some places in my house where I couldn't before.
No choppiness here...thing flies.
Does stock browser power saving levels works (any change in screen brightness)?
For me it worked well in KKA but not in KL3 .
Please test this for me.
Thank you.

KLx series has problem with STK. I always get FC with my STK film. But I do not have any problem with KK1.
Confirmed. KL3 feels a bit faster.
This update has made a massive difference for me. I'm using ADW and widgetlocker and the phone now feels properly connected to my inputs on the screen, lag is pretty much gone. Much happier with the feel of the phone now.
I flashed through CWM and installed CFroot kernel for KL3 at the same time.
This things screams compared to KKA. I lost pinch to zoom in my Gmail Client. Anybody have any ideas about that?

Hi LordManhattan,
When I tried OTA, it says that my software is up to date. But when I connected my Note with Kies, it told me that there is a KL3 update. (From the Philippines but currently located in India).
For the record, I havent updated the software yet. Will do so by the weekend.
Updating via Kies
Question:
How do you update GNote via Kies? Is it through Kies Air? If it is through Kies Air, how? I do not see any Check Update button.
Or do I need to connect my Note to my computer via USB?
Thanks!

same problem here no OTA and no kies.. been checking constantly.. lool...
i think its only india that have the update...
so i guess if we want it we just have to flash.....a rom from here

KL7 Fixes everything lag related - You should flash KL7

Seriously every Note user should flash Stock or a custom rom based on this KL7
Can get stock here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1413120
I like many others had many issues with Lag and now my note litterally flies...!
And I haven't even put AbyssNote on it yet!!!!!
Also this KL7 fixes a bluetooth keyboard Issue I had with every previous rom. I had to mix and mash bluetooth drivers from my gtab and a sgs2 to get my bluetooth keyboard working but all resolved with KL7!!!
Am quite chuffed!

Agreed, KL7 is amazing.
No more lag anywhere, it's so fluid in everything it does now.
Even in the settings menu where it would be kinda jerky when scrolling in KL3, it's butter smooth now for example in KL7.
What's different about it to Kka, I'm on that and its smooth as already and it's android 2.3.6, isn't kl7 jut a regional version of kka?
kl7 is the latest firmware version

Basically use Odin 1.85 or mobile Odin to update.
Then apply CWM and root using the script in the CFRoot link that is also linked in the KL7 Thread.
Check the KL7 Thread for more information.
Only thing that still lags for me is phone.

It is a German official Samsung version can be found OTA (Over The Air) or via kies if your phone has/is flashed with a DBT code of CSC.
If you flash this after that you will wait for German updates only because region code will be DBT (debitel Germany) unlocked note for Germany.

The last 2 updates were first rolled out for phones with the DBT CSC.
The latest KL7 firmware is available for phones with the German Debitel CSC.
To avail yourself of the update without using Kies, you can do an OTA(over the air) update.
Since the update is currently only available for phones set to the DBT CSC, if you change your phones CSC using this method here, you will then be able to update OTA by going to Settings > About Phone > Software update > Update. (Not all Note phones can have their CSC changed with this method)
Changing the CSC will reset your phone to factory settings.

It's getting very difficult to keep waiting for this to be rolled out! I have KJ4 and have been waiting for what seems forever. Why doesn't Samsung just do this for all devices at once?
I am currently using a hongkong offical rom.
It always lag for 2 seconds when I click the power button to activate the phone from standby mode. Does kl7 fix this issue?

Update annoyance

I'm from the UK and have the UK version of the Note. It seems that pretty much everywhere else on the planet are getting firmware updates and we are not. Since the release of the Note, I've read of other countries getting updates yet there has only been one here since release. I'm currently KK5 (or it could be KKA, not sure which number)
I'm just wondering why others get updates as we don't.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
different countries always get differne updates, every company works that way with regards to android updates
You have the latest update for our country if you're on kka if u feel like ur missing out you could always grab a stock rom and flash that.. latest is LA6 or try out one of the custom roms available
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Time to bite the bullet! I was wondering when we'd get an official update too, as I didn't want to go down the same road as I did with the HD2 and flash a new rom every other day trying to find a good one. So I rooted the stock rom (same as yours), flashed the Samsung LA6 rom over it, then flashed the Abyss kernal. Much better now! Probably won't flash a new rom now until ICS is officially out.

Unlocked OFFICIAL firmwares - which country is preferred?

NOTE: I prefer being on the stock ROM and using KIES. Please either steer your suggestions towards that, or avoid responding. Any posts telling me to dump Kiest and/or go with a custom ROM will be reported as off-topic, as I want this thread to be useful for others like me.
With that said, the main reason that I like the UK ROM is that the stock apps are in English by default, and there aren't TOO many of them (many can be removed/disabled as well). My issue with the unlocked UK firmware is that Samsung UK is bound by the carriers there, so they don't release the XEU firmware until after several carriers have released theirs. We're likely another month away from JB on the UK SGS2.
I once tried another ROM, and while the system language could be set to English, it had some odd quirks and stock apps were limited to the native language of that firmware's country. So, are there any non-carrier ROMs that are predominantly English without too much additional bloatware? I'm likely going to try Poland next. If I have to, I'll remain on UK if it is the best option, even if the wait does suck.
LSN is latest build of JB. I've downloaded but yet to take the plunge. Was going to just wait a few more weeks and see. The main reason i haven't yet is because i use the memo feature. I realised once on JB you can sync it online. You can also back it up with kies but when/if going back to ICS you can't just sync from online (not available with ICS version) plus if you backup with kies you can't wipe after install with JB connect to kies and restore it!

I understand that LSN is the latest build, but when you download builds from different countries, you get different language limitations with built-in apps, as well as different built-in apps. IE, the UK firmware has BBC Iplayer built-in, but other countries don't have this.
By your requirements, Nordic firmware should suit you fine. Has no extra apps/bloatware apart from stock Samsung (not even Video Hub).
And the above implies that there are no foreign language apps, none at all. Also, Samsung Apps market/Playstore automatically configures themselves to your locale, so you can download the BBC app from wherever it is available.
This will also ensure that Kies compatibility remains as is.
Ah i thought kies wouldn't work? When i flashed Spain im sure you couldn't connect to kies to restore some data! That's a result if it doesn't effect the use of kies!

Odin is the only way to do that- i think it picks up firmware and csc(?) codes when connected then checks against Samsung servers.

So how is the author of the original post moving between ROM's from other countries using Kies?
Yes, Kies is useless and so unfortunately then is this thread.
You need to use Odin.
So what is the point of a discussion on the use of stock, country specific ROM releases if the author of the OP doesn't want to use or discuss the use of anything other than Kies to install the ROM, something that Kies won't do anyway?
And now I fear I will be reported for going off topic in this misleading thread.

Once you use Odin to switch to another country's ROM, you can stick with KIES for further updates and device management if that is your preference (as it is with me). A moderator was kind enough to remove one post that was off-topic, but I'm not going to spam the moderators with delete requests. As was stated in the original post; if you don't like stock ROMS and/or Kies, this thread is not for you. Move along.

I'm not saying I don't like stock firmware. I'm currently using the stock UK Vodafone release myself. What I am saying is that you want this thread to be helpful to others but you claim to only want to use Kies, something which you can't do if you want to try other countries stock ROM releases. This may be misinterpreted or misleading for new members. At least explain that in the OP instead of slamming down a blanket warning and threatening the wrath of the mods for off topic comments. Far from being off topic, I'd say the use of Odin and not Kies was pretty relevant.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
The desire is to remain on stock partially for Kies usage. Odin for country swapping is a requirement. Since you now understand the distinction, get on topic or please leave the thread.
I already understood what was required. It's just a pity you haven't made the use of Odin clear in your original post.
As I said, I'm using the Vodafone LSD release. Before that I was using the Nordic LSN firmware. Before that I was using the Spanish LS8 ROM. Apart from the Vodafone bloat and a network connection failure with LSN release, I found very little difference in performance with each of the firmware releases.
I am disappointed that the UK unlocked JB update hasn't been released yet, but if you're limiting yourself to Kies then until it is released and you're not on Vodafone then ICS is the only game in town.

The one downside to this ROM is the lack of Kies support. If I roll back to the March update, I can regain that. The benefit to Kies support for me is that I can then get updates as they roll out, instead of having to search and use Odin. I'll have to see if I can find the differences between the March LSN update and the April LSN update for Nordic countries.
What I'll probably end up doing is waiting for the next Nordic Kies update and flashing that, which should kill two birds with one stone (Kies support and latest version/fewest bugs).
