No more ASUS for me
Never posted before, but what a silly post. Perhaps Microsoft should not develop any further versions of windows as it will 'harm' their past users? Perhaps no-one should develop any new technology as some will be left behind, perhaps we should have stuck to bows and arrows? It is well known that Android is a more fragmented eco system than Apple. Perhaps you should have thought about this more and researched your purchase a little better. You sound more suited to Apple quite honestly, fanboy in the making.
Meh. Whatever. Have fun with Apple. Don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya.

Yes, i opened the thread believing it contained something positive regarding Asus and Google. Instead i was rewarded with petty drivel.
If you're looking for somebody to talk you out of it (which you must be, you wouldn't have made a post otherwise), don't bother looking. We don't need you to stay. Go ahead and jump.

I find it funny about his complaints of Asus/Android. It's not a flaw of Android by any means.
Should Android stop releasing operating systems? No! They have nothing to do with hardware. Their goal is to develop competent software with reasonable releases, and they do that.
This intermediate time of merging the software onto the hardware? Yes, it is annoying, but it's expected. Android releases their software at the same time to EVERYONE. It takes time to develop the OS for a product. This time exists in Apple products as well most likely, but Apple has the fortunate benefit of not releasing the software until AFTER it has been fitted for the limited number of devices they control, because they are both a hardware AND software company.
Give it time. ICS will be here eventually. I'm patient. In the meantime, I will keep running paulbrennan's build and enjoy what we already have.

And what do you think, other developers do what? Apple does the same (no wonder the old iPhones aren't supported by iOS4 and 5), just like Microsoft, Samsung, Nokia, etcetera.
New codebase is the key to the future - with new functions built in, it can be a more widespread generic base, where manufacturers have less to modify to make their own taste. And manufacturers aren't able to keep up? Seriously, if they only made a device tree, and sent it to Cyanogen Team with a few test devices, they'd have more profit than ever. They could keep up, and they are not willing to do so because then the newer devices wouldn't sell. Just like Apple, Microsoft, Samsung, etc.
Manufacturer's are not going to spend profits on older products, they already got your money! Why is Google forever coming up with new versions? Android is in developement and always trying to be like Apple. I am an android developer and thought I would be happy with developing for 50% of the market users. 50% of the market users but in the corporate world the ratio is much different.
Click to collapse
The Android Market has millions of devices connected (I recall someone saying over 300million). So to target only the 50%, you'd have to make an application what is useful for almost everyone. Then count with the other devs who thought about the same, and you'll drop below 20% in the most optimistic case. You can never reach 50% if you're not a name already (like EA Games, Gameloft, and other huge companies). Or if you can't afford heavy marketing, adverts, etc.
Companies that provide employees with phones and tablets is where Apple rules. Why is that? Apple products are just better. They are not cheap plastic, creaky things where every one if different and not hardly one is on the same version. I do not have an iPhone because I refuse to pay carrier's pricing but all I want from a phone is phone calls, gps, access to emails, and some web browsing.
Click to collapse
WRONG. Companies buy iPhones for their employees because they have contracts with a given carrier. They get them in huge numbers for cheap, because Apple is pushing them (the carriers). They get huge bonuses just because that, not to talk about a lot bigger user base.
Apple things don't rule. They are made of the same plastic, metal, and other parts (ICs, SoCs, etc), as 99% of these are manufactured in China, even assembled in China! There was a picture, where it showed that the same factory was producing iPhones on a line, and next to it were cheap tablets and phones and mp4 players, and they were using the same material, electronics, etc.
At Apple, Samsung, HTC, LG, Motorola, and so on, you're paying for the brand - actually, some of the Chinese stuff can be better for half the price. Justsayin'
Phones are not game systems or video players - I am not going to watch a full length movie on a 4" screen.
Tablets on the other hand might be video players and I might play a game and I certainly will surf the web and read emails.

Phones aren't, you're right, but when you're on the bus for 30mins, sitting in a line for the dentist, and so on, you can't have your xbox, ps3, wii with you. But you have your phone. So it's a fine time to watch a short movie (an episode of some series, etc), or play something funny (Angry Birds for an example).
Tablets are the same, except bigger, and you can use them as a smaller form PC or laptop.
I do not have an iPAD because I thought android was better. It is not and is always trying to one up Apple but Google can not even catch up to Apple nevermind get ahead of them.

Then you think wrong. Both sides have their own pros and cons, but Google is definitely ruling Apple with Android, for the first time. There were more Android phone activations just during the holidays, than iPhone sales during a YEAR.
I had high hopes for ICS but doubt it will ever come on h/w that I already own - thanks ASUS, but I understand. Why no ICS yet? Because ASUS is working on their next device as they try to make a better product than Apple.
Interesting, first you say Google shouldn't make updates, now you cry for not getting one?
If ASUS cant take google code and get it ported into a device and not have problems then why are they selling the product. The prime GPS stinks but they continue to sell them, ASUS fixed the problem by repacking the PRIME but not retrofitting the nonworking Primes. We pay for their development, they are not looking back - profits comes from new sales.
Click to collapse
Asus won't release ICS until they get enough sales of the Prime first. You DID NOT pay for their development, there was no word about providing further updates in the future (there was a part, where it said, that Asus MAY send updates) for sure in the contract, you simply purchased the device, with the actual software on it. About Prime problems, yes, it's a concern they won't retrofit the problematic ones, but I'm sure they will come around that sooner or later.
I am saving for an iPAD and will keep the Android toys around for the kids. ASUS finally made me see the light.

A tiny bit of offtopic: iPhone users may be suffering from "Stockholm Syndrome"
I hope I will be forgiven for a bit of an off-topic here, but since there is much, much comparison between iPhone and Nexus, and selling models of both phones differ so much, here it is:
Analyst Says iPhone Users Experiencing Stockholm Syndrome
A bizarre report from Strand Consult, an analyst firm in Denmark, has likened the relationship iPhone users have with their iPhone to Stockholm Syndrome:
When we examine the iPhone users’ arguments defending the iPhone, it reminds us of the famous Stockholm Syndrome – a term that was invented by psychologists after a hostage drama in Stockholm. Here hostages reacted to the psychological pressure they were experiencing, by defending the people that had held them hostage for 6 days.
….Below is a selection of some of the arguments that various hard-core iPhone fanatics have been using since the iPhone initially launched:
1. The first iPhone was not a 3G phone: What do you need 3G for? You can easily use the iPhone without using a 3G network and anyway, 3G is not particularly widespread, so this is not a problem.
2. The phone cannot send MMS: There is no need to send MMSs, hardly anybody sends MMSs.
3. You cannot forward a SMS: This is a function that hardly anybody uses and was therefore not included in the first iPhones.
4. The phone has a poor camera: The built-in camera is perfectly adequate and the iPhone takes fantastic photos with its camera.
The report lists 20 iPhone flaws and purported defenses by iPhone owners and comes to the conclusion that the real reason for the popularity of the iPhone is because the people that bought one will go to great lengths to justify their purchase, even lying to others:
In reality the iPhone is surrounded by a multitude of people, media and companies that are happy to bend the truth to defend the product they have purchased from Apple.
Personally, I find the whole idea that that the iPhone is holding me against my will preposterous. I mean, sure, I signed a two-year contract that I really didn’t want, but it’s not like I’m stuck in some kind of walled garden or anything. In a real hostage situation, the hostage taker would control what you see and hear, and it’s not like that with Apple, right? And there’s no one demanding money, like, say $175, to free me from the iPhone or the two-year contract. Nope, I love my captor, I mean, my iPhone.

I just got done reading the article from the link. This reminds me of this arguement I had with an iphone user on youtube. I was explaining how the N1 was a better phone overall to him and this was one of his responses to one of my comments. I remember it like it was yesterday. The guy was an asshole too.
"Why would I need a voice-to-text feature when I can type XXX words every minute???"
*sarcasm* I would love to see this guy work his fingers that fast as his car is driving off a cliff. Dont text and drive kids.

Yeah, locked for $700.
This article touched on SO many good points about how Apple has changed their tune on tons of different features. My favorites include...
-MMS, not needed because you can use email (but the email client will resize your images to VGA/MMS quality anyway, fixed in 4.0).
-Apps/App Store, web apps are the future!
-Multitasking, unnecessary and excluded to improve stability, then push notifications were satisfactory, now multitasking is being added in 4.0.
-3G, drains way too much battery life so it's not needed...until we release another phone to sell you next year.
But my favorite of them all? PRICE. The original 8gb, EDGE-only iPhone sold for $599 on a two-year contract.

...unless they're talking about Windows Mobile. Really, I don't care what your background is. 6.5 and below is absolute garbage, lest HTC and everyone else wouldn't be trying to cover it with different UI layers, nor Microsoft ditching the framework altogether for Windows Phone 7.
We are all fan boys to a certain extent. I'm sure many of you (including me) will defend the nexus against some other device. We might have different limits, but the behavior is the same in every one of us.
Lets be realistic, we love our devices no matter what choice we made.
The rest its just pure exaggeration and if you start believing in psychologists your life is going down the hill.
Yeah, I do the same with my Nexus One :
For some reason I can't send MMS, but hey, who needs MMS anyway ?
Games definitely sucks compared to what you have on an iPhone... but you don't buy a phone to play games, do you ?
Sound quality sucks... but I have a DAP so i don't listen to music on my Nexus One.
The screen is almost unusable in direct sunlight... but I almost always use it indoors.
The truth is, once you bought an expensive device, either you don't like it and you return it, or you like it enough to keep it and you start convincing yourself that it doesn't have any flaws, or that its flaws are not really important.
And I do like my N1 more than enough to forget its flaws =)

You'd better believe the psychologists, at least some of them might know your nature more than you know yourself. Here is one that explains this point, for example:
http://www.ted.com/talks/dan_gilbert_asks_why_are_we_happy.html
So the point is that we should have less choice so we can be happy with the only thing we have? "Yeah, right!"
This doesn't make any sense to me. While he might be right, i do believe in being able to choose.

The only thing worse than the supposed Apply fanbois (which to be honest I don't really notice) are the Apple hatebois. I really don't understand what all the hate towards the iPhone (and now iPad) is about. I think it's a pretty good product, personally.
I'd much rather see people with iPhones than BlackBerry's. Nothing annoys me more than being "out of the loop" because everyone I know uses BBM almost exclusively for communications. If RIM made phones that I actually wanted to use it wouldn't be such a problem, but as it stands they lock everyone in with services like that and then produce lackluster consumer products. Rumor has it that iPhone OS 4 will have iChat functionality built in, which likely means native Google Talk support!
Google Talk good, BBM bad.
Re: A tiny bit of offtopic: iPhone users may be suffering from "Stockholm Syndrome"
Omg, the wars to defend the Sacred Apple have started =)
It's just a funny article. You don't see nexus fans flame over Onion News' video of "google whispering ads to your ear". If you can't take the sarcasm, maybe there is a reason why you're so defensive =)
The wars to defend the Sacred Apple have started? Someone says they think a product is decent and to you its a declaration of war? I think that's the problem. There seems to be no middle ground any more. You either have to agree to hate Apple, or risk being branded a mindless drone caught in Steve Jobs' reality distortion field.
Anyway, I realize the blog post has a joking tone. I was just pointing out that I think iPhones are nice. Not awesome like a Nexus One, but still nice.

Yeah, I think you hit the spot there. It may actually have nothing to do with the device itself, it's the attitude and the ignorance. You'd think that spending $500+ for a phone, people would research and educate themselves a bit about the alternatives, pros and cons.. yet iphone users (I'm sorry, it's true) very often do not. The reasons for that are a separate topic. Mostly, the salesguy at AT&T (or coworker/friend/media) just told them it's the best, so it must be the best.
It'd be hard to find nexus one user who didn't make any research before buying it. Maybe that's why they didn't sell as many . I betcha vast majority of nexus users know all about Nexus' pros and cons.
Imo, that is the main reason for all this fighting. iPhone itself just got caught in the middle.
I apologize for making another "I'm mad at Samsung for..." thread, but after trying for the past hours to get the JI5 update and failing, I'm a bit angrier than I usually am and want to hurt Samsung somewhere where they will feel it while not going to extremes like trying to organize a class action suit.
Ever since the Galaxy S line came out they really haven't done much to support it except release 3 buggy updates for three of the phones and completely ignore the one that's been out in the States for the longest (until the "made you look" event of today), yet they're so eager to show off that Galaxy Tab that they want everyone to be interested in and buy next month. I suggest simply spreading the word to everyone that no one should but that thing until they at least get their house in order and get the Galaxy S line up to the basic functionality they should have had out of the box. Spread the word that they apparently can't support the products they release and that nobody should touch those things until they can prove they are going to stand behind the products they want us to spend our hard earned money on.
Before some of you start flaming me, I do very well know this is a forum for people who mod their phones and have no intention of staying stock. I mod my phones too. Even with the fixes I've flashed I still have issues with GPS and the phone resetting. I appreciate everything the community has done to help make these phones better and I whole heartedly thank them for doing so, but at the same time there's a whole company with a division of people getting paid to do this that hasn't been able to supply us with one good fix after nearly 3 months time. It's time we should make every potential customer aware of that.
I'm boycotting the U.S. release of the Galaxy Tab, but only because I find the fact that all 4 U.S. carriers disabling the phone functions of the thing (the international version won't have this limitation) as a hugely retarded move.
I'm not interested in carrying around 2 huge slabs-o-touchscreen all the darn time. If I were I'd be an iDiot and worship Steve Jobs.
That's understandable, personally I could care less about being able to make calls on tablet. It's not like you would be able to take calls on both your cell phone and the tablet. And I sure wouldn't care for having another phone number.
I love my iPad btw!

To be honest I am not surprised they are disabling the calling feature. In fact I would be surprised if they didn't.
I mean I for one wouldn't want to stop using my vibrant to use that giant tablet.
Also no matter what it will have wifi so it can be more like a laptop on the go and playing games on it will be awesome from the looks of it.
Well if they are just disabling the feature then that means the hardware to make calls is still built in so someone could root it and make calls anyway. But I'm still not getting one cause it'll be just like my phone. Tablets are a median of a phone and a notebook but nowadays the Ipad is the best out.

Can't say I'm feeling pouty and petulant about Samsung in general, but I crossed four Tabs off my Xmas list when they announced the phone functionality was disabled.
As for the frequent comments about the Tab being too large to use as a phone, I use my phone as a speakerphone most of the time, and Bluetooth headsets put the final nail in the coffin for that argument.
I really doubt the S Tab will sell much anyway.
Smaller screen than the iPad, lower resolution, considerably worse battery life, for almost the same price....
Plus, given our experience with Samsung, it will probably not be upgraded to Gingerbread, which according to Google is the first version of Android actually meant for tablets.
Who in their right mind will buy the Tab?
What made me mad is they have more accessories slated for that thing than the very phones they already have out.
Docks, keyboards and all kinds of goodies. Oh yeah they all plug into the bottom of the Tab not the top like our retarded phones.

Exactly!
Since it's functionally crippled compared to it's European counterpart I don't plan on carrying one around.
It's an interesting device, and will probably have a modicum of success, but the deliberate lockdown of an existing feature is one that makes me uninterested in it.
Given that it's carrier unsubsidized pricing internationally is likely going to make it more expensive than the iPad, if I were to develop an interest in an Android tablet/mid that didn't support phone functions, I'd just SPEND LESS MONEY on a comparable 7" tablet that doesn't have phone functions. There are several...

It has a dual core chip, two cameras..anything you would want from a tablet computer. Granted it does run Apple's software, but you seriously can't hate on a device that is way better than any out there.
The pricing is better.
The product is better.
The aftermarket is better.
The design is better.
The battery life is WAY better.
And before someone says, you will just have to replace it in a year..so what? You have to replace anything within a year. One month after you buy something (especially on verizon!) you are already outdated. You have (Motorola, Samsung, Rim, and god knows who else making all these tablets). At least you have one company only making one design a year. They update their technology, and they make it good. Android phones get a new one every freaking month, and they are all looking the same. When you have different companies making different stuff, they shouldn't look the same. Can you say copycat much?
Get over yourselves.

I don't know why would set yourself up to get flamed on this because you know its gonna happen, but whatever floats your boat. I'm not gonna hate on you for liking Apple but I do think that you missed a few things.
-Android is more customizable since it is open source.
-The majority of Apples product line is not better priced than its competitor's.
-The specs on Apples stuff becomes outdated very quickly, many times you can buy something non-apple cheaper that is spec wise a lot better and it won't cost your near as much.
The only things that I can agree with you on is that yes Apple design is better, and also the support for their products is much better, but with a significant price difference usually.
I think it really comes down to preference in the end. IMHO people fall in love with Apple products because they are easier to use, there is not a lot of complication in doing some things. IOS vs. Android, you have the people who want to be able to have a smartphone and dig the ease of things in IOS, then you have Android which is more complicated but you can do a lot more with it. So you could call the IPhone the smartphone for "dummies" and then Android is for the more tech advanced crowd that likes to customize everything to how they want it. I am not trying to step on anyone here but, that is just how I see it and I think many others would agree.
PS- I am not here to argue about which is better, so if your gonna start trying to flame on me don't expect another post from me.

not true.. because pricing has not officially announced.
I don't get why people "hate" anything product related. If you don't want it, don't buy it. Saying anything sucks without owning one for a long period of time is just people being petty, immature, and possibly jealous.
It's one thing to be brand loyal, but don't be a moron about it. Think about if everything were the same. It would suck. The fact that there are different brands and items is a good thing. We should want more diversity, not less.
I don't really *hate* Apple. I just don't like the way they do business. It doesn't appeal to me. They lie about the competition, present the worst case scenario as the norm, lock everything down, and charge a premium for cosmetic differences.
I could buy a Mac Pro laptop for $1200 or I could buy an Asus laptop with the same specs PLUS an iPad or Galaxy Tab for the same price. It's not worth it to me to have an aluminum case and a slightly better fit and finish. For some folks it is worth it. People buy Mercedes and BMW and that's their business. I just don't like the implication that unless you buy into their closed ecosystem you are stuck with something that is falling apart and complete garbage. There's always something in between the bargain basement crap and the fancy boutique offering.
Xoom has a bit higher specs than the iPad 2 but yeah, it's a bit overpriced. The thing is, it's not just Apple that prices high when something is new. The Viewsonic G-Tablet has almost identical specs to the iPad 2 and it's $400. As the market heats up there should be plenty of $500 tablets.
And they *will* do more to replace a laptop. They run all kinds of apps from any app store, not only the Apple or Google or whoever approved store. They don't block competing tech like Flash which is used on a ton of web apps. Not everyone wants to sacrifice capability just so things are idiot-simple.
This is the only time when I really get annoyed at Apple. They make certain simple things sound so hard in order to sell their products. Rather than spending 15 minutes to learn valuable computer skills, they'll just take away options and charge you for the privilege. Screw that. Paying extra so I don't have to think is not a good thing and the idea that it is a good thing irritates the crap out of me. People are way too eager to open their wallets to avoid using their brains as it is. On a personal level that annoys me.
If you think I'm too stupid to decide what apps to install or what kinds of things I want to run on the devices I can buy, then you can do without my stupid money.
Anyway that's all personal ranting. There's always a market for people with more cash than time or effort. It's legit. It's just not the only way to look at things and it's not for me. I like to bargain shop, compare features/specs, and go for bang to buck ratio. That's just not usually an option with Apple.
Besides all of my personal preferences, I don't really give a crap where other people spend their money. As long as there are options that suit me better I am happy. Tech geeks can argue about why they make the choices they do all day. It's our hobby to research and compare so we stand behind our decisions. It can get irrational and I'm no better. In the end it's just consumer electronics made by greedy corporations and they will probably all gain sentience and kill us all anyway.

I agree with this. Let's not forget this is an Evo forum, for discussion of the Evo. Let's not clutter it up with threads of non-relevant devices. There's an off-topic thread if you want to do that.
Wow, so silly. You are a troll, speaking in absolutes, and without facts.
The xoom 32gb wifi + 3g that is 800 has a slightly larger screen, and is upgradeable to 4g for no additional cost.
The ipad2 32gb wifi + 3g is 730.
If you are arguing options, that is one thing, but it doesn't make sense to compare different storage sizes and complain about the price difference.
If you took 4g out of the picture, the xoom 32gb would be cheaper than 800. Both are dual core. They are both simarly speced and priced products.
Since you asked, yes Apple has good products and eco systems. What I personally don't like are their practices which are worse than anything Microsoft ever done.
I hate Apple because they act as though customers are lucky to be holding one of their products in their hand instead of the company feeling lucky that they have the customer.
The only thing that apple does that I'd like to see other manufacturers do themselves is make near-perfect hardware. The build quality of apple products is without rival and I wish HTC would attempt to come close to that.
OK, so after about a week with my Xoom, i've been plagued with the question, "is that an I pad?" When I pronounce that it is definately not an I pad they ask me what it is. So I go on to explain the specs, both that of the I pad 1 & 2 and of my Xoom, I don't think one person that asked me understood a word of what I was saying. Nearly all of them ended up saying "so they are the same thing." I'm sure most of you can understand my frustration. So I end up resolving by kindly saying, yes they are both tablet computers and in that fact alone they are similar.
This leads me to believe that Apple sells most of their devices to people that look at the xoom and the ipad, see the price, and buy the I pad because its cheaper. Or maybe its just because ios is pretty much fool proof.
This is what worries me, are we becoming the minority? The small group of us that understand openness and what is worth a buck.
I understand the I pad itself is an amazing piece of equipment, but what the people I talk to don't understand is it is built on phone os. If they took ios out of the iPhone and stuck it in a macbook, I bet some people would still buy it, and not only that, I bet they would come online and rant about how amazing it is.
Honestly, is that really a question that needs asking? Apple peeps used to say "Our hardware is so superior to a PC... now it IS a PC.... then they said software is king... and they go and install windows on their mac also... For the last few years, Mac gets hacked the quickest at the conventions... most Mac people I ask don't run antivirus since they think their Mac is virus etc proof...
Mac / ios are for people who don't have time to learn the intricacies of a superior product or better way to do things.
You sir are spot on!
I don't think people like that should have a choice between tablets. To me it sounds like they should stay with the silly little closed source Apple products. It is a much safer and wiser choice for them. An open source OS like Android is no place for someone who thinks that a Xoom and an iPad are the same exact product. It's really funny though because this happens to me a lot so I can relate. Me being a tech expert, I run into this thing a lot.
And in my opinion, us computer techies are actually becoming more and more uncommon. The common person has no idea that you can even root/jailbreak a device, in fact... the less you know, the better off they are. Ofcourse that is just an example, but a good one indeed. It's pretty bad that most of the world relies on such things as iTunes because they cannot figure out how to drag and drop music onto an mp3 player. It's really messed up that people are not tech saavy enough to do the simplest things or understand basic tech knowledge, but hey... that's where us computer guys come in. We show up to save the day, and make all the money. +1 for all the techno nerds out there!
Android user for life!
They don't market to "idiots" per se, but they market to the general consumer products that "just work", with no extra setup or maintenance required. This is why they have prospered with 95% of the general consumer that buys these products.
Its easy for us at XDA to say that the iPad has its shortcomings, but to the random person who just wants it to work and doesn't want to tinker and mess with it the iPad/iPhone/iPod are perfect for them.
I love android and love tweaking/messing with it, but my girlfriend just wants to turn on her iPhone (or her computer, a Mac Mini, for that matter) and have everything work easily, no questions asked. Know what I mean? I wish I could recommend Android to more people, but unfortunately I really can't given the minimum level of aptitude to really take advantage of it.
They don't market to idiots. They market to people who want things simple and polished. And I wouldn't be so quick to shrug off the closed ecosystem until Android gets a:
Music store
Video store
Video rental
Netflix
Wide swath of high quality games
Android has yet to prove that an open ecosystem can bring in major developers and content providers. I hope this changes in the near future. Until then its clearly a better choice for 95% of the population to just go the Apple iPad route.
I totally get the "it just works" hypothesis... Until it just doesn't work. Want to see some serious joe and jen sixpack RAGE? Go to an apple store and watch them take in their broken macbook. LOL. I dont understand the animosity towards Apple. They have created an amazing ecosystem around their mobile offerings. They make EXTREMELY high quality hardware throughout their entire lineup, to the point where no other OEM comes even close to matching them. They demand a premium for their products in more cases (somehow the Xoom is the one demanding the premium now), because of the quality of their devices and their software.
As for your "rage" comment, i doubt it. Apple offers a one year warranty on their macbook where you can walk into the Apple store and hand it to them and they will either fix it on the spot or send it to be repaired. No other OEM does it this hassle free. Also they sell Applecare which most "idiots" as you describe them probably would have purchased, extending the warranty to 2-3 years. This covers everything. Also, these idiots, if they have a question with a program or how to get their new ipod to work with their macbook, can just take it all to the store and someone will talk them through it nice and slow.
When someone asks me if my Nexus is the same as an iPhone I ask them "is a Mustang the same thing as a Camaro?" They are the same class of car (or phone) but are different brands and do things a little differently then one another.
I called them average joe and jen sixpack. Never called them idiots. Please, show me the error of my way and aide me on the road to recovery by quoting where I said they are idiots.
Apple is a small niche computer company. Their mobile/mp3 side is what is profitible. Honestly, they would have been bankrupt in the 90s if they had not given all those computers to schools in the 80s. Great strategy.
As for computers breaking, generally most break in the first month or so after they have a true burn-in or else they last for a long time. The year replacement thing is nice, but not really a selling point to me... Hell, even BB does this.

My good sir,
You are right, please allow me to rephrase this. Does Apple market to the ignorant population? Defined in this way:
Ignorant: unaware because of a lack of relevant information or knowledge; "he was completely ignorant of the circumstances"
Which really i know is a sold answer. But my points being that they market to the people that are unaware that buying from them, because they are stupid proof products, is allowingApple to do whatever they want. I don't have a problem with their products or most of their bussinesss strategy, but more and more they are straight starting to piss me off. And what bothers me are these idiots walking around acting like everything's not changing in big company's favor. You think Apple has created an amazing ecosystem cause you can turn on your iPhone and get your movies and your music and whatever. But they are destroying the ecosystem that should be between apple and the developers using their system. They are greedy, and the ignorant people they are generating all all this bull**** to go on.
I am not here to offend apple buyers, I have a jsilbroken iPhone and its awesome.
I am here however to discuss the fact that Apple is creating a land full of people that are introduced to idiot proof technology and banks off them.

People are willing to trade a lack of choice and openness for an ecosystem that just works and is really nearly flawlessly executed. They are willing to give up being able to flash roms for a device that has a couple thousand quality games, the ability to buy music from itunes, rent movies from itunes, watch netflix and have every app under the sun made for them first. If Apple oversteps their bounds, like they seem to be doing with the 30% subscription thing, people will abandon their platform. Until they do that, frankly they simply have the better ecosystem/devices until Android can make up some of that functionality differential.

What's with this sense of entitlement? You bought a product. You didn't sign a contract. Sony can make any call they want. As much as you don't like it, Sony did it to help xperia users. You'd probably want to boycott Sony if they released ICS and it was worse than gingerbread. Just cut the crap with these stupid threads.

I bought the xplay on the commitment given by sony that the phone would see the ICS update. Sure, no contract but definitely covered under consumer law here in the UK.
As much as you don't like it, not everyone believes every word Sony says as if its holy scripture. Nor does everyone believe that they put enough effort into fulfilling their commitment to update the device.

Then I started using OnLive instead well, abusing the 30min Free Trials XD
Still, I'm not boycotting. Sony have a good reason for not updating. However, I do think they should release the code that they have now so that devs can work on it some more for people who want it.
Me, I'm sticking to Gingerbread...Makes my games work

No ones forcing anyone to join the boycott mate. Your entitled to your own views on the matter and I respect that.
As for Sony releasing their source for it, I'd say there is more chance in Syria stop killing their own people. Not very likely in other words.
I'm in on the boat. Quite frankly - if I had known Xplay to not get any update I would consider buying a phone that would or already has like G.Nexus. I thought since X.play will be on par in terms of software why the heck not when I'm getting the gamepad.
What sony did was -dare I say- fraudulent. They have advertised on false information - on the premise of which people have - TRUSTED - and bought their phone. That is a VERY legit reason to be pissed about.

First of all, if we are not getting ICS is not directly Sony's fault:
Logseman said:
Let's start from the beginning. The Play, from a pure hardware view, can run ICS. Sony, HTC and other companies are releasing hardware with ICS and lower specs than the Play (Tapioca, Desire C). We've seen that the beta runs mighty fine in the performance department, and it's obvious that the job can be finished if Sony cares to do so.
However, this is a matter of the gaming ecosystem. In short: the only companies Sony cares about are the big names like EA, Gameloft, Rockstar, etc. as they make the big majority of the Play game sales.
However, with regard to development, the Play is not important to those big names: they see it as "the redheaded stepchild Android", because they have to make extra effort to make it work with the game pads, instead of easily deploying the code in it like they do in the whole different platforms they code for (not only mobile phones, but smart TV's, console-related app stores, Steam and so on). Sony bribed those big developers with a lot of cash (remember all those free EA games and temporary exclusives?) so that the Play remained visible.
Fast forward to now. Gingerbread is present in a good 60% of Android Play Store-running hardware. ICS has only like.a 4%. Android is the best selling platform, with, let's say 500 million active devices. If my numbers are not wrong, that gives 300M GB devices 20M ICS ones. Developing with ICS in mind implies higher development costs, because you have to study the new features and use them. And of course, big name developers target wide audiences: by default they'll program with Gingerbread in mind, so they couldn't care less about ICS right now.
Someone mentioned Windows 7 incompatibility with old games: there is actually a Compatibility mode which was mainly designed for the purpose of using older games. Now Steam has taken care of that, which suits MS fine.
With the ICS upgrade, Sony probably contacted their "partners" and asked them to update their software (basically switch from the Sony custom gamepad framework to Google's standard one which Sony probably contributed themselves) for it to work properly in ICS, like they do in Sony gaming platforms. But unlike the PlayStations, it's those big name developers who are in control now, particularly in Android. Therefore, they showed Sony the middle finger.
[...]
TL;DR this is a power struggle between Sony and the big name game developers. The latter have won here, at the expense of the users. Support independent developers but make sure they don't make the "big name" status, because they'll get the need to control everything and screw users like this.

So I don't know why the hell you should boycott Sony, while they where trully wanting to launch the update (there you have the beta as a proof of it).
Second, the Sony that disabled the "Other OS" option on PS3 (Sony Computer Entertainment) is not the same Sony that decided to not launch ICS (Sony Mobile), so don't mix these two things, because it's like saying "OMG that movie from Sony Pictures is horrible, I'll boycott Sony without buying any of their smartphones!". Lol.
Ah, and as last point, the called "YLOD" (Yellow Light Of Death) of PS3 that somebody said is not the same as the red lights of death of Xbox 360. The YLOD was the most of times just a warning from the console, and not a signal of fatal failure. My PS3 showed the YLOD once and after disconnecting and reconnecting it here it is working fine since 2006 when I bought it.
-double post by mistake-
Interesting statements from Sony:
Back in the early days of Android upgrades, the company decided not to provide the Android 2.2 upgrade to its Xperia X10 phone -- which launched three months after the 2.2 platform's release -- saying that it believed "the features included in the Android 2.1 phone" were "on par with, and in many cases better than, a vanilla installation of 2.2." Um, right.
Sounds familiar?

Precisely this. I suspect people wouldn't have been half as mad if they hadn't promised it beforehand. I certainly wouldn't have been because I simply wouldn't have bought it without some sort of commitment to at least one big update. It was the last and most important factor in why I took the plunge and bought the phone.

Your view is based on taking Sony on their word. I have a hard time trusting them on it for various reasons, least of which because it just sounds like a half arsed excuse to me.
As for the beta, the idea of a beta is to find problems and bugs and make efforts towards resolving them with further builds, when did that happen? we sure as hell didn't see or hear about that happening. It seems to me as though the Sony dev dept realised it wouldnt just be a simple bodge job with the Play and bailed out without any real effort at it. Again, this is my view... you're welcome to disagree.
Although I didn't make that point, and I do agree that they are ofcourse different things, the two incidents were handled by the same company and so the reputation carries and is relevent.
Onto the YLOD, good for you... nobody I know with a 1st gen PS3 was so lucky (myself included). Do a quick search on ebay and see how many PS3s are being sold as faulty with the YLOD issue.
I couldn't care less whether these issues are linked to Sony, Microsoft, Apple, Samsung, whoever... loyalty to any company is a mugs game. I'll take issue when any of them when they take decisions that I don't agree with.

Very familiar. Its actions like these that don't instil trust and reinforce peoples reluctance to trust them on their word.
I don't want to be taking sides. But there are still people who don't want to gamble with flashing custom ROMS and stick to 'stock-with-a-little-mod' ROMS. And by that I mean stock ROM with bloatware removed, launcher modified, and the like.
Just like me. For now I don't think I could gamble with playing around with my phone. Nonetheless, I think I'm pretty satisfied with the GB I have now. I admit I'm a lil disappointed with Sony pulling the plug on the Xperia PLAY. But hell, I'm contented with my GB. I don't think I can stand a day with my phone showing off epic UI but can't even properly play my games. After all, the PLAY was supposed to show off with games, not some fancy UI. End of story.
