Replacements - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does HTC/tmo repair mytouch's that are out of warranty? If so, what are the prices for say a failed emmc chip
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App

they recently added the insurance for 7 dollars a month that you can add at any time. they will replace the phone with the same or if not available a different phone. ive heard of people getting amaze's and sensation. currently the replacement device is the lg mytouch. im waiting till something half decent turns up to trade in my phone thats been having problems lately.

Thanks!! I forgot about that program.. I bought my phone off Craigslist so I was worried about warranties. can I have the phone replaced because the trackpad wake function does not work? Also how can I tell what replacements they are shipping?

the trackpad to wake is a software addon. its available in the stock rom and some others, but if you are using a different rom it probably is not the fault of the phone itself but of the rom. as for what they have, you can ask a rep either by phone or store once you added the insurance

Will Sprint swap my hero for an Evo

ok heres the deal. I have 3 manufacture defects with my hero.
1. Lots of dust under my screen.
2. Phone overheats when charging and running say google nav. (car charger)
3. More than 15 dead pixels all over the place.
my phone is going to have to be replaced. so my question is do you think they will give me a new Evo instead of another hero.
also I have sprint warranty.

More than likely, no. But you never know.
For me, historically, it's been:
1st phone defective, replaced with same model, up to three times, then they will offer a different phone. I seriously doubt that they will offer an EVO to replace the Hero since the Hero isn't at its end of life.
Think about this: You buy a Chevy Malibu, take it in 3 times for manufacturer's defects, it's a lemon, do they upgrade you to the Corvette? Nope.
I wonder if they'd do it if I offered some cash as well

No they don't give you a Vette, but they don't give you a refurbished car either. It is possible to get an EVO but you are gonna need to sweet talk them to death on phone. I have only once gotten upgraded after a few bad phones, that was the ENV2 to Voyager.
My guess is that you'll be aloud to move over to the Moment. Good luck with trying though. I bought 2 heros in December and both are still in perfect shape. No dust or paint chipping.
Can always ask...
The rule has always been that they will swap it for an equivalent phone of 'equal or lesser value'. I don't think the EVO is going to apply to that.

You're right, they don't give you a refurbished or new car of the same model. Because it's not in the terms of the warranty. Just like it's not in the terms of the Sprint warranty to upgrade to the top of the line model, only to repair or replace with the same or COMPARABLE model, and that repair or replacement is at THEIR option. They could just keep giving you refurbs over and over... wait, they already do!
just like everyone that had the htc diamond and touch pro, they waited a couple months after the tp2 and they all of a sudden there was post after post of sprint gave me a tp2 and swapped out my touch pro. You won't get it right away but after a couple of months it may become possible.
I moved to the Hero from 3 defective Pres, but I had to show the store assistant manager that I was nice, competent, and a repeat customer.
so if I am nice, maybe wave some cash around I might get what I want.. maybe I should send my wife into do it when the Evo comes out.. women seem to get what they want.. haha

I doubt they will make me pay full price. I convinced them to upgrade me from my instinct to the hero as a contract extension 4 months before my renewal. I have learned that being persistent but nice can normally get you places.

I have always been upgraded to the latest and greatest for my phone problems..
titan=>mogul
mogul=>tp
tp=>tp2...
now what they wouldnt allow me to do is go from the tp2 to the hero
my understanding with the store i deal with is...
3 swaps within a 3month period will force them to ask you if you would like something else, and they will have a list, I also found out that they wouldnt allow me to go from winmo to android, nor from a keyboard to non ketboard or vice versa,
so i'm inclined to think that those of us with issues on the hero, will not be allowed to swap for the moment since it has a keyboard, and I've already tried that, and the swap phone needs to be of the same type...
and I have been told directly, they dont care about the phone.. its about continuing service.
I also have insurance and tep.
If you are having many problems, and it has been documented in Sprints notes ie you've called and complained with no results, the escalations department @ Sprint may be willing to deal providing you get a sympathetic one. Best Buy however told me when I. purchased my Hero and their ins. (have both) if unable to fix my phone itwould be replaced with a new Hero, if still being built, if not, then I would get the newest version of it. imo would be the Evo.-)

So I called Sprint today and politely complained about my defective hero. They are sending me a new one in the mail. They did not tell me I had to send my current one in.. is that normal?

in order for this to work out to your advantage, you'd have to wait until the Hero is no longer available from Sprint, and even then it's a slim chance.
Unfortunate for you, you'll more than likely get another Hero, or a Refurbished Hero depending on the way you go about getting your replacement.

this is strange... do you know what department you talked to? If they performed the ticketing process that i believe they did, then you'll get a return kit with your replacement phone, and i would advise that you mail in the defective phone, if not, there's a chance that you will receive a charge in 2 bill cycles from receiving the replacement device showing a $500+ charge for the replacement phone.
In summation, if you get a return kit (a return envelope rather), then use it!... if you feel that you don't need to do this, i'd then advise to call Sprint and make sure that your account notes specify that you don't have to return the phone... otherwise, you need to.

If I buy a MT4G on ebay... Can I get "good" screen...

If I buy a MT4G on ebay and I don't get the "good" screen, can I warranty it?
How would you go about buying a MT4G for a good price and getting the better screen?
I bought mine on ebay and still got it replaced by Tmobile for free. You buy the phone, wait a few days for your IMEI number to go into their system, then contact customer service (I did it through online chat), don't mention anything about where you bought it just say that you have a MyTouch 4G and the screen looks washed out etc., and they should send you a replacement.
i have a mytouch 4g and had it replaced only because i bought it brand spanking new. if the mt4g has ever been activated on another persons account they will not warranty it, they will say the warranty is not valid. the reason i know this is because my husband had a vibrant that we bought off craigslist and because the phone had already been activated on the girls account they would not honor the warranty because they can tell that you were not the first to use the phone. i hope this helps
I've bought multiple phones off Craigslist and had them all replaced through warranty. Some of them more then once. As long as its still under the one year warranty you should be able to get it replaced. Can't speak for other people though. I was never denied or even given a hard time about an exchange.

I have a bad screen. Who cares?! Unless u stare at your phone from an extreme angle... I never did understand the problem. I can understand knowing there is a better screen and expecting it for the money though.
Plus mine can overclock on any kernal at any setting out so far with zero freezes. Does your "good" screen do that?

I was telling myself the same thing until I went back to the tmobile store, found one with a good display, and compared them side by side. I'd seen the pictures and videos, but in person, it really was a night and day difference.
Since looking into our screens is ultimately a lot of what we all do on a smart phone, this is something I definitely would not compromise on.

9th exchange, at the very least.

Hello everyone,
I need some advice or suggestions on what to do. The Mytouch 4g, as you all may know, has a lot of problems. I've done many exchanges now, and some of them were done back to back. The first few times, TMO was able to ship express for free, but now they are charging me $9.99 for regular ground shipping even though the phones that I receive are defective. I am very frustrated at this point and have been thinking about canceling all 4 of my lines with them and eating the $800 ETF. What do you guys think I should do?
You may be wondering why I have to exchange it so many times..
Unlike the fellow perfectionists that you guys are, I never exchanged a phone that had a bad screen or squeaking buttons. The first time I exchanged it was because it had two dead pixels, then the power button would no longer work, then there was a ton of dust under the screen to the point where I had trouble seeing the top left corner where my status/notification bar is, then I had wifi and reception problems, then I've had the phone either shut off or reboot on its own.
I've been running into many, many problems - and they are not always the same problem either. After the third phone, all they have been doing is sending out refurbished units that are 'pre-damaged' by the previous user. On top of that, I have to pay for shipping on each phone, plus the Zagg's invisible shield (it's about $23 with labor on installation) that I had on several of the replacement phones. After troubleshooting for hours on end with tech support, I noticed that my battery cover is loose since they had me reboot/remove battery so many times, I ended up buying the gel skin case from TMO yesterday so that the battery cover wouldn't fall off.
I would be glad to take any advice that you guys have at this point. Thank you.
Edit: By the way, I did not have any apps other than opera mini - didn't even update youtube and things like that.
The statistical likelihood of getting 9 defective devices in a row is astronomical. Truly. If you are being honest and these are all really manufacturing defects then you sir are the unluckiest ****er ever and you are never welcome to babysit my kids. I don't really have any advice except to say that if your next problem is software related, try rooting and see if that fixes it. Otherwise I would avoid crosswalks and commercial flight if at all possible. Damn dude. Unlucky...

They can offer to give you a different phone all together. Like the g2 or galaxy 4g. Just ask
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
Do this. Call tmobile and tell them the issue with your device. Have them do another warranty exchage, but, instead of getting it shipped, tell them that you really do not want to wait once more to receive another device shipped and that if you can go into a tmo store and pick up a warranty replacement. They shouldn't have a problem telling you yes. Have them call the store so they can tell them you will be going in to get a warranty replacement. This way for sure you wont get a refurbished device. You will be getting a brand new one out of the box. This is the way I did my warranty exchage. They even gave me an extra battery for free.

I agree with coupetastic-droid and also after your 5th replacement you should get a different phone if u want for ur replacement. Try for a g2 or even a g2x!

TJ you crack me up. I actually went through this guys episode with a mytouch slide, 5 phones under warranty, but they never charged me a dime for shipping. The one and only issue i had with the Mytouch slide was dust under the screen. I can't remember if it was the 3rd or the 4th replacement i got in the mail, but that one came with dust in all four corners. Didn't even insert a SIM card in that phone just took it down to my local Tmobile store and the manager exchanged it for me. After the 5th replacement with dust i decided to sell it and replace it with a MT4G. Well it was all good for a week until my power button failed to work, 1st exchange. They made me pay the 9.99 shipping for that one. Receive the new phone and i notice the display sucks compared to my wife's MT4G. Instead of calling in to tmobile i drive down to the local Tmobile store and i show the manager my predicament ( mind you this is the same guy that was exchanging my Mytouch Slide). Nice guy orders me another MT4G, waived the shipping. 3rd phone arrives a few days later, display is washed out, but i decide to live with it. Figuring that if i exchange it again I'll get another one with the crappy display. F**K me if the power button doesn't work after two weeks. I go back to the Tmobile store and have another chat with the manager, orders me another MT4G and waives the shipping. Manager tells me, "You're the unluckiest man i've seen with a phone", and i said "yes, yes, I am." Last exchange was the charm, good screen, and the power button actually works. I honestly thought i was the only poor bastard that could be this unlucky with phones. I have to show my wife this post, so she doesn't think i'm the unluckiest man alive. You sir have just made my day. If you can i'd go to a local tmobile store and see what they can do for you. Best of luck.

First of all, nice 'Lude. I just picked up an 07 Civic Si Sedan on Saturday and I ****ing LOVE it!
2nd, are you running stock Sense or rooted? To be perfectly honest I've found the stock Sense to be much more buggy than the cm7 I've been running for the past 3 or 4 months.
My first phone had random reboots and such and a factory reset seemed to solve the issue, but I'm assuming they had you do that multiple times.
Even if the phone is fresh out of the box, do a factory reset before you use it. It might help, it did for me.
Otherwise check out cm7 or one of the Sense roms around here. Removing all the bloatware actually does wonders for stability. If you really want I can upload a nandroid of my own stock rom with the bloatware removed.
On my 3rd mt4g and I'm about ready to go back to iPhone most androids have to many hardware issues.

First of all, yeah.. my Lude is old news. Since then, I've switched to an S2k, but that got stolen. Now I'm in an 06 Evo.
Anyway, back on topic..
The phone is completely stock. This is the FIRST PHONE I've ever owned that I have kept stock - Why? Because I don't want to have to unroot it when I send it in for warranty repairs.

Unrooting is as simple as flashing pd15img.zip through hboot. Not that hard.
Definitely try a different rom. As I said I've found cm7 to be much more stable than stock.

i got pretty bad luck with my phone. finally got a good one after like 9 exchanges and a month later the power button went out. i called them and they told me i couldnt exchange anymore cause i "had too many problems with the phone." so the rep told me that the only thing they could do left is to exchange my phone for a motorola charm.....i was like wtf why the heck would i want to downgrade my phone, which polly cost more then that piece of **** charm and it doesnt even run android...major downgrade.
Dude. That blows. Hard. I'm sorry to see that you're having so many problems with your phone and I'm glad I don't have the same luck as you. I got mine from eBay and it came in perfect condition. Never had dust under the screen, good screen, no faulty hardware, etc.
But in all seriousness, after 5 phones, I wouldn't keep it. I personally think that it's a great phone, but if I had to take it back 9 times, I'd try something else out. Ask if you can switch. It shouldn't cost you anything as long as the retail price is equivalent or lower than the MyTouch 4g, and if I'm not mistaken, it's one of the higher priced ones (rightfully, so). If you don't hate a keyboard, the G2 might be good for you, but I hear the hinge has problems and knowing your luck, the hinge would break apart upon first use. So maybe the Galaxy S 4g? I know Samsung has great hardware, even if their software is crap, as is their update schedules, but that is easily fixed with custom ROMs.
Either that, or wait and return it completely, if you're still within your return time and keep your upgrade for when the better phones come out, i.e HTC Sensation, etc, and just use something affordable off of eBay or Craigslist. Meh
Just my two cents. Sorry if it didn't help much, but I hope your luck gets better. :/
Update:
My luck has gotten worse. I received another replacement phone on April 15th. A week later, April 22nd, I noticed a dead pixel on my screen.
*Sigh* I have no idea what to do now.
You need to move on to a different device. I've never heard of anyone have so many problems with a device.

I called in and spoke to technical support. They asked me to bring the phone to a store so that they can fill out a request for warranty exchange form. However, their tone basically implied something like, "It's impossible that you are getting so many broken phones. We need to verify that your phone is really defective before we do another exchange."
I brought it to a store and the retail sales manager had no idea why technical support sent me there, and basically told me to go call customer service again. He did, however, notate that there were a few dead pixels on the screen and that there was no physical, nor was there water damage.
I then called retentions and the supervisor picks up (without any transferring either). I explained to her exactly what happened, and how technical support had sent me into the store. She told me that she has no idea why because they could have filled out the form for warranty exchange over the phone, just like the other exchanges that I have done so far.
She apologized for what happened and said that I qualify for a multiple exchange (sorry if I got the term wrong!). She said that the manufacturer would exchange my Mytouch 4g for a Motorola Charm..
I explained that it would be a MAJOR downgrade. She then submits the form for the exchange and told me that it would be shipped express free of charge.
So you getting another mt4g or the charm? I'm still teipping about them offering you a charm over a mt4g. They are nuts!

usb port damage is covered by warranty

i have been so busy using and enjoying my evo that i dont have to come around to xda much these days but i have come to say something that maybe most of you already knew.
short version: i damaged my usb port on my evo and it sometimes would not charge and sprint is giving me a new phone for free.
this is not going to cost me a dime, the tech said it was a known issue and he ordered me a new phone and said it should be in a few days.
he said if there wasn't a known issue i would have had to pay $35 for a new phone. i thought i had a $50 dollar deductible, then they upped it to 100, not down to $35, but i guess i will take free.
i dont undersstand all the warranty options but i guess this time i didnt have too, being that they are going to swap it out for me for free.
i am rooted and running cm7, i flashed back to a stock nanadroid back up before i walked in. is there anyway that this rooting business can back fire on me?
on a side note, can anyone think of anyway to turn this new evo into a 3d phone?
If you didn't run s-on tool they will know your phone was rooted, but no big deal its not software related issues. Just so you know you just lost root, warranty phones come preloaded with 2.3.3 (same thing happened to me now im waiting for root). And your phone will be a refurbished one unless you are still in the first 30 days. As for the cost usb port failure is considered a manufacturers defect and that's why it's free. 35 dollars are for repairs that are your fault but not severe. 100 applies to loss or theft or severe damage.

I recently had the usb port break, and traded in for a 3d. Guess I probably could have held on and waited for the galaxy s ii, but I didn't think they would cover my phone as I had it for just over a year, and traded in. Probably could have made more money selling my 4g on cl too.

[Q] (Q) MT4G Asurion replacement for SG1 or SG2

I went online to asurion and filled out the online replacement forms and when put in that it was my old mt4g they came back and said that they no longer manufacture the mt4g. It gave me a choice between the Samsung Galaxy S1 or the Samsung Galaxy S2. Now obviously the smarter play is the SGS2 since its newer and faster and better than the SGS1. But there has to be a catch because the MT4G to me is not on par with the SGS2, but instead is more like the SGS1.
Has anyone replaced this phone with the same circumstances?
Also anyone who has replaced a phone with asurion?
Does everything come with the phone?
-phone
-back battery case/door
-battery
-sd card
Also does asurion ship a new or refurbished phone?
Thank you for any help
A couple of your questions can be answer from your post. They cannot send you a myTouch 4G because HTC is no longer manufacturing them, if they were going to send a refurbished phone, there are plenty of myTouch 4Gs around for that.
You paid for the insurance to cover the total loss of the phone; whether due to damage, misuse, loss or theft. You pay the deductible and get a new phone sent to you. In your case, they cannot replace it with the same model. Pay the deductible and get the best phone they offer you. No need to stay with a single core phone when they are offering a dual core. Since it will be a new device all the factory included parts should be there. I recommend talking to one of their reps to clarify with absolute certainty what you should expect from the process.

Thank you for the response dclaw. I only ask about the process for warranty replacement because I had done a search on asurion as the key word here on xda and Google and in some cases only the phone was sent and no battery or the phone and no SD card. Or the phone and no USB cable and ac plug. So that's why I was wondering if anyone had replaced the mt4g and had to get another different phone.

Isn't Asurion with T-Mobile for the PHP warranty thing? I just got a replacement MyTouch 4g two days ago, so shouldn't they be able to send you one?

Asurion is for hardware related replacement. I.e cracked screens, water damage, etc. Where warranty replacement is for software
