Locked out of fastboot, locked out of ics? - Xperia Play General

Question of the day is if we cant flash a custom rom and kernal while having locked bootloaders how are we to flash ics when its released?
What method will be used to push ics on our gingerbread phones or better yet how do you think this will be accomplished?
Could the same method if any be used to flash a custom kernal and rom on locked bootloaders?
I realise no one may know for sure but i though the speculation would make a good topic of discussion.

Well, we have FTF files, and for R800x users, ours is R800x_3.0.1.E.0.88_Verizon.ftf which has the factory stock 2.3.3 firmware, kernel, everything on it, including all of the bloatware and everything a new phone has to offer. The only way that would be possible is if we have an FTF of ICS specifically for the Stock Verizon R800x made by Sony Ericsson.
Correct me if I'm wrong, developers.

Ya like Selim said you can already flash signed kernels on a locked bootloader using flashtool, SEUS, or OTA updates. Fastboot is just the only way we have of flashing unsigned kernels. When the ICS updates roll out from Sony they'll be of the signed varity, meaning you can just OTA it or flash a .ftf
And just to clarify for anyone still hoping, no we can't simply sign a custom kernel in order to avoid fastboot, for that we'd need the key, which we can't guess and Sony wont provide.

So we need the keys to the sony safe.
Im shocked this hasent been touched as keys for every other sony product were found

Update or not to update

I have an unlocked and rooted Atrix 4G running on 4.1.83, and I know once I do the 4.5 update I will loose the ability of RSD Lite to flash back to previous sbf's. I have put off this update due to the fact of possibly limiting my options with the phone. I havn't had enough time to really look into different roms or even start studying up on developing something (which I want to in the future; just busy with job interviews and a big move coming up). But to get to the point, is it worth it for me just to do the update or not? I am curious of everyones thoughts on this....
Thanks
Personally, I think it's not worth updating since we will soon have CM7. It's all up to you though. I enjoy my freedom when customizing my phone. Do you?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
you can use fruitcakes to flash 1.83 if froyo is your thing.
Personally even the buggy CM7 build is miles ahead of the assorted 2.3.4 Roms if you don't need a camera or wifi tether. I will never run 2.2 again

moto's own bootloader unlock
Isn't moto going to unlock the boot loader anyway? Wouldn't that mean it would be possible to continue the stock ROM updates and then choose to unlock after the next update from moto and have the ability to flash arbitrary ROMs as current unlocked owners can? Perhaps I'm missing something between the curren unofficial unlock and moto's future unlock.
i ran the update and have lost my tethering hack... looking for a fix now.

No offense but the mods probably want this in Q&A. That being said, CWM Recovery is the safest route post 2.3.4 update. That is actually the preferred method anyway. All of the Atrix firmwares are available as CWM flashable zips in samcripp's fruitcakes thread. You don't really lose anything but the ability to use RSD which is least preferable anyway.

root x-play 2.3.3 A.0...386 without unlock bootloader

hi
is there any way to root xperia plat 2.3.3 A.....386 without unlocking boot loader
or , i have to unlock it , cause gigngerbreak 1.2 is not working on xperia play.
or can i unlock ==> root ==> relock and , have lock and rooted xperia play ?if i do that , maybe hurt the bootloader ? (( damaged bootloader )) ?
i think that is global question and appreciated for anyone that answer it
if you dont want to unlock the bootloader, you will have to downgrade to 3....145 (i think it ends in 145) and straight after first boot, before doing anything else, run gingerbreak, and then you can upgrade via OTA. if .368 is available for ota, that is. personally, i'd unlock bootloader and either install doomlords kernel or run the fastboot CWR module. main difference being (just an assumption), if you just run the cwr method, you can then relock the bootloader after updating
here's the fastboot recovery. if you use it, please remember that you must NOT flash this one. it is purely a run once method. and you can then keep the stock kernel:

thank you so much for your help .
i've did this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098131 before and worked prefect , but i hear that SE want to deploy a new update , i flashed and relocked my phone again tu access SEUS.
but my question is , if i unlock and root my phone , then relock it via fast boot , after relocking root will remove/disapear or still working ??
if still working , so that is best way to have root xperia play and use sontericsson update service.
i apppreciated again if somebody update me on this case .
thanks
i believe you will still have root access after re-locking the bootloader. but whether you will still have root after updating via seus, i honestly dont know. but to be fair, the speed the guys on this forum work at, you will probably have access to a flashtool compatible update before you know it's even out
hang on, you got an R800x?
The only way to preserve root when updating is OTA.

the r800x is a tad different in methods, and i'll be a little more cautious on my advice for you. but i can confirm that root remains after OTA update, as i had to use this method a few weeks ago, before i had my fastboot activated. but remember, bootloader must be re-locked before any official update methods (sorry if i keep repeating this, i just get paranoid in a protective way)
and regarding the blog you linked. they said last year that the x10 will not be officially updated above 2.1. a few months later, after the play, arc and neo came out, they changed their mind. twice. not only did they say that they were gonna give us (i was a x10 owner up until last month) gingerbread with just stock android apps, they then ended up releasing 2.3 with optimised sony ericsson versions of some apps, like the camera so dont believe things too early

I think you should ask these questions in the r800x dev thread as there would be a bigger chance for some clear yes or no answers. I haven't read that thread and as @solitarymonkey says the r800x rooting and unlocking is a tad different to the r800i, so can't really advice in that direction on wether you'll stay rooted and if you can just relock and update through SEUS as on the r800i. Just take a look in the dev section and you'll find the thread about r800x
Regards Dousan...
just be careful with your root if you use seus. if you can do ota, please do so, as root retention is tried and tested (on the r800i, and i'm guessing the r800a, too)
ok , thanks my friends
my phone is R800 i , i've rooted that 2 weeks ago and turnd it back to SE stock just for next update .
thank you again
Is it possible to use GingerBreak on the 3.0 ROM, then use SE PC Companion to update to the 4.0 ROM and keep root? My carrier doesn't do OTA updates so I can't use it.
I've heard that it breaks root when done over seus. But I haven't tried it out myself to verify. The worst you can do is try, lose root, and reflash the previous fw with flashtool and get root back.

Is it possible to backup my own "old" firmware?
If you mean the whole system image. You will need the bootloader unlocked and use the clockwork recovery fastboot tool to create a nand backup. Or you can download one of many back up apps from the market that can create back ups of your apps and data.

Using SEUS or PC Companion is the same as flashing with flashtool. You'll get a fresh and clean install of the firmware and everything get's eraesed in that process (nothing get's touched on the sdcard)

gingerbreak is not working on 2.3.3 ,
we should unlock the bootloader , ther root it , thern relock it and wait for new update via OTA/ pc companion / SE update service .
there is another way , i've read this post : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116090&page=3
but i think it's better to DON't downgrade the x-play , cause most of people on that post had problem .

[Q] rooting an offcial OTA gingerbread update?

is there a way to root an official htc desire z gingerbread ota? i want to keep the official rom, and just be able to remove the crap htc placed in, i understand that htc's gingerbread is hard to crack..
i've tried using gingerbreak, but it's keeps on turning the wheel (for more then 10 minutes).
you can check the wiki, but you will need to tinker with flashing it, I think the only way is to downgrade, root, then upgrade to a pre-rooted gingerbread rom. I just flashed a stock ota pre-rooted gingerbread rom coming from froyo rooted. Works freaking awesome!

i don't get it, a pre-rooted stock gingerbread rom , will un-root my root is it not?
No it is pre-rooted, as in when you flash it your already rooted, so no further attempts at rooting are required. Pretty much the only way to get stock GB AND root.

Follow the wiki method to downgrade and then root. After you've successfully rooted, you can load any ROM you want. If you would like to stay with a stock ROM but keep root, there are several pre-rooted OTA-based ROMs in the dev section you can flash.
several? what's the difference? i mean how do i know which one to choose?
if i reset to factory settings is that considered downgrading as well? (because usually all my info is either on the sd card or on cloud stuff, and i've been meaning to do that for some time)..

No, that's just doing a factory reset. Please just read the wiki and you'll understand how to downgrade and achieve root.
Theres no right ROM, its your choice. They're clearly labeled and you can read about them before flashing...
actually i've been reading the wiki for a while, and one of the things that pops up is the terminology used like S-OFF, and RUU that i don't know, not to mention, model of G2,VISION and desire Z which seem to be the same thing only ...not, as well as different firmware version they each had.
all i know is that i bought my desire z independently form a store who imported it from the uk (which turned out to be a bad thing, because middle east roms, have right to left support, only i can't get them, because i can find a store that sells them).
and my software version number is 2.42.405.2
S-OFF means Security Flag OFF. It means you can flash unsigned roms, and the emmc is not write protected.
RUU is Rom Update Utility, which is an official update from HTC.
Vision is the model/code name of the phone, with 2 variants. G2, which is the T-Mobile, aosp version, and DZ which is for the rest of the world and comes with sense.
as for the right to left support, you should be able to find an app/rom which will support it, or if you plan on sticking with sense, have a look at this
-Nipqer
emmc? unsigned roms? you mean un-official roms?
if only there was an faq for these things, "i'm a java developer not a hacker dammit!" (bones, anyone...) )

eMMC : internal phone memory
Unsigned ROMS : Basically any ROM that doesn't come from the manufacturer themselves
You don't really need to understand the terminology since they always give a download link right after anyway, not like you have to search for it
i didn't get through even first base, in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261 it talks about knowing your INFOCID and doing adb and fastboot, only it forgot to mention that fastboot works only if you allready rooted, (i think).
i did an adb reboot-bootloader and got boot loader screen, is the microp what i'm looking for?

bootloader and kernels

Okay now this is a guide for maybe noobs and mostly software modifiers.Hi reader. thanks for reading lol. now this piece of work is something that even educates me. welcome to wilbso's unlocking bootloader and adding kernels guide. im gonna try and keep this short so you dont nod off...
What is a bootloaderWell...a locked bootloaer (normal) is something that stops you from adding custom kernels. you think that rooting your phone and loading a custom rom is all. well you thought wrong. yes you can install drivers such as multitouch etc by rooting but unlocking your bootloader is a totally (almost) different thing. now, these days, gingerdx requires linuxdx-which requires unlocking your bootloader. unlocking the bootloader can either end up in satisfactory... or... full and complete brick. now a full brick is-blah blah blah ( i will make a seperate thread for what type of bricks there are and what they mean)
so, basically unlocking your bootloader properly free's your phone. still think your up to it? wow your pretty brave lol...
What is a custom kernel?A custom kernel is something other than a stock kernel.need anymore?
It is something that improves your phone. make it stand out. it can also improve the performance of your phone. if you would like to see a guide on how to build a custom kernel then click here
how to unlock your bootloader. I have unlocked my bootloader and I followed these threads. It would be a good idea to follow this and this
but when i did it i downloaded flashtool, s1tool (to check if my bootloader was unlocked) and something else ( i cant remember what it was called but it ran in my terminal i think). when i did unlock my bootloader i checked it with s1tool (i cant remember if THATS right either though lol) and i successfully managed it ut i still recommend reading the links that i put.
please, do hit the thanks button on my posts and the posts i put links to. i would greatly appreciate it.
kernelsi have looked at many different kernels since august ( the month i joined xda) and they all look cool.
flash them by a flashtool. i now run linuxdx v04
here's some kernels i have come across:
A gingerbread kernel
Linuxdx v04
Alfs for gingerdx
If you have any questions plese post them here or my FAQ or my latest guide to roms and mods. Also i am not responsible for any damage to you phone
And remember to press the thanks THANKSbutton
NO trolling here is tolerated either. cheers!

i dont know much about miui cuz i isnt supported for x8 but if your talking about bootanimation. a boot animation is something that replaces your current boot up logo. you can get an app that does it and you can flash them with a recovery i think

You don't have to flash kernel if you don't want to.you can unlock bootloader by itself. Just unlocking it means you have the ability to flash kernels and drivers

Flashing Xperia x10a AT&T Version to Gingerbread

Okay so I have a ? its all stock running 2.1. Theyre having issues with it being slow and such so I thought maybe putting gingerbread would fix it. Anyone think the speeds are faster when running Sony Stock Gingerbread on the x10? compaired to 2.1?
So if I wanted to do I just download the stock gingerbread file? and then use the flash tool and then flash it and thats it?? No root no issues?
They dont need root as they dont need it like I would lol.
But I dont wanna screw up there phone as att does not carry a phone he likes yet to upgrade.
ive tried reading the guides and they confuse me thats why im asking
Flashtool + stock 2.3 ftf + reading a bit equals much faster phone.

Its quite simple...flashtool does it all...download the latest flashtool and drag the new gingerbread ftf file onto the screen where is says you can drag it....then just put phone in flashmode and itll flash the ftf file...The upgrade is worth it i believe and its impossible to brick your device with a locked bootloader like yours. PM me if you need more help.
