is there a way to root an official htc desire z gingerbread ota? i want to keep the official rom, and just be able to remove the crap htc placed in, i understand that htc's gingerbread is hard to crack..
i've tried using gingerbreak, but it's keeps on turning the wheel (for more then 10 minutes).
you can check the wiki, but you will need to tinker with flashing it, I think the only way is to downgrade, root, then upgrade to a pre-rooted gingerbread rom. I just flashed a stock ota pre-rooted gingerbread rom coming from froyo rooted. Works freaking awesome!

i don't get it, a pre-rooted stock gingerbread rom , will un-root my root is it not?
No it is pre-rooted, as in when you flash it your already rooted, so no further attempts at rooting are required. Pretty much the only way to get stock GB AND root.

Follow the wiki method to downgrade and then root. After you've successfully rooted, you can load any ROM you want. If you would like to stay with a stock ROM but keep root, there are several pre-rooted OTA-based ROMs in the dev section you can flash.
several? what's the difference? i mean how do i know which one to choose?
if i reset to factory settings is that considered downgrading as well? (because usually all my info is either on the sd card or on cloud stuff, and i've been meaning to do that for some time)..

No, that's just doing a factory reset. Please just read the wiki and you'll understand how to downgrade and achieve root.
Theres no right ROM, its your choice. They're clearly labeled and you can read about them before flashing...
actually i've been reading the wiki for a while, and one of the things that pops up is the terminology used like S-OFF, and RUU that i don't know, not to mention, model of G2,VISION and desire Z which seem to be the same thing only ...not, as well as different firmware version they each had.
all i know is that i bought my desire z independently form a store who imported it from the uk (which turned out to be a bad thing, because middle east roms, have right to left support, only i can't get them, because i can find a store that sells them).
and my software version number is 2.42.405.2
S-OFF means Security Flag OFF. It means you can flash unsigned roms, and the emmc is not write protected.
RUU is Rom Update Utility, which is an official update from HTC.
Vision is the model/code name of the phone, with 2 variants. G2, which is the T-Mobile, aosp version, and DZ which is for the rest of the world and comes with sense.
as for the right to left support, you should be able to find an app/rom which will support it, or if you plan on sticking with sense, have a look at this
-Nipqer
emmc? unsigned roms? you mean un-official roms?
if only there was an faq for these things, "i'm a java developer not a hacker dammit!" (bones, anyone...) )

eMMC : internal phone memory
Unsigned ROMS : Basically any ROM that doesn't come from the manufacturer themselves
You don't really need to understand the terminology since they always give a download link right after anyway, not like you have to search for it
i didn't get through even first base, in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261 it talks about knowing your INFOCID and doing adb and fastboot, only it forgot to mention that fastboot works only if you allready rooted, (i think).
i did an adb reboot-bootloader and got boot loader screen, is the microp what i'm looking for?

OK a nice simple one,
had my dhd a few weeks now very pleased with it. Am a massive fan of cyanogenmod roms, previously had a magic 32b and his roms were the best thing to happen to the phone, so am holding out for a cyanogenmod dhd rom - fingers crossed!
So if I install OTA updates will it stop me from getting root with S-OFF in the future. Golden rule of flashing anything (apart from backing up first!!) is not to update to the latest system software. Well this has always been the case with anyhing I have flashed in the past (psp, ps3, magic 32b, ipod, iphones etc...) is that also the case with the DHD?????
DHD on T-Mobile UK.
nop, its not like "apple" devices, you can install otas from htc and hack your device, the ota include some software issue that fix (bugs and so).
btw: if you have root and recovery - you will not get any OTA, the recovery blocks it,
but you will get it from your costom rom vision.
As I thought, same deal as my old magic 32b then. Still think i'm going to sit on the fence for a while an watch what roms get developed or ported over.
I just miss a few of the mods in CM roms, silly thing like being able to enter a custom field in the add contact menu. Im sure i'll get over it. Although I believe that was a wysie mod to the phone book.
Thanks for the quick response.
Just gotta say how nice this phone is after my magic 32b, its like upgarading the ram and processor on your PC, it flies!!
An afterthought,
it seems it would be sensible to install the first few OTA updates before rooting so any stock software bugs are fixed before you loose the ability to update OTA.
Unless of course you are flashing a custom ROM which I assume the devs would include the bugfixes within their ROMS.
Why dont you try the CM rom now and if you dont want to keep it unroot the phone ?
Its brilliant by the way
I didnt realise there was a CM rom for the DHD, i couldnt see a category on his site for the DHD
But I do see it on the first page here in the dev section. Very pleased CM for the DHD and the phone has only been out a short while!

Untrue: OTAs can and surely will fix the exploit used to root our DHD. Once rooted, never install an OTA and wait for a custom rom with the fix(es).

No, because they usually update the hboot, and when they do that, you're properly f#@&!d because Devs have to find a new exploit.

Couldn't you make a goldcard with sdk and a HxD hex editor??...then flash the ruu and you should be able to OTA..
Not as I see a need to do this as the Devs will always make new custom roms with the updated offical roms anyway..
Finally I purchased a Desire HD on Tmobile without any contract ( I Paid just for the phone) Waoow things did change a lot since all the roms I tried on my beloved HTC Blueangel.
It is locked on T Mobile
SW 1.39.110.1 Is this the latest rom? Although so far It didnt bother me all the bloatware from T Mobile, Is it worth leaving them alone ? I know it is possible to debrand desire and unlock etc. Is it also possible to Debrand Desire HD and unlock and flash with HTC Stock rom? Or shall I just not bother?
And also realised some of the HTC things dont work well HTC HUB unable to download catalog etc. Any reason?
Hi,
I got mine on monday afternoon, coming from a Desire.
By Tuesday morning it was Rooted running Leedroid's Rom, wow what a difference.
Only thing I dont like so far, (yes the screen is not as sharp/colourfull, but you do get used to it, it's just when they are side by side you really notice it), is that the ringtone etc is a little on the quiet side.
Apart from that, what a piece of hardware.
Good luck whatever you do, just enjoy it.
Cheers
Been reading on leedroids thread, Although it is easy to follow the instructions, I just would like to know what is permaroot s-off etc mean?

Woohoo
Since I got my new phone I can not stop reading
I completed visionary temp perm root
And S off unlock etc etc. checked at the boot S -off is there so now my existing orange sim works on this tmobile branded DHD all good.
I have done all this in order to actually put a stock rom on to my new phone without any tmobile bloatware on it.
Now the my phone is ready for a ROM
Can I just put HTC stock rom ? If I do will I be able to install a custom rom later on ? Would I loose root or any other features so far?
Many regards
If you're going to all that trouble, why bother with the stock ROM when LeeDRoid has created (and supports) a truely great custom ROM 1.51? Highly recommend it, as he has made it with a custom kernal allowing easy OC or UC with SetCPU & Smartass governor.
You made need to ENG S-off before flashing the recommended radio though. But make sure you do a full backup with ROM Manger and also copy full sdcard to PC first.
Thanks for your answer, I dunno why I kinda want to keep it stock for a little while before I start flashing with Developers excellent roms

Good idea. Then you will actually appreciate the advantages of leedroid when you get around to flashing it. Flash it straight away and you won't really know what the difference is.

Someone Swyped my idea.
If I was to flash with stock rom later on can I flash it to Leedroids rom later? As I read stock 1.72 2.2.1 somehow deroots and makes changes so can not flash it to custom roms ? Is that right ?If so what do you think my next step ?

As far as I know, you have to downgrade to 1.32 first.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
Then root again s-off with visionary, you can then upgrade to a custom rom & kernal (over/underclock CPU).
Some ROM are optimized to work with certain raidios (battery / reception performance, so to flash the suggested one, you'll need to Eng s-off as well.

All worked for me
on the first link about downgrade it says!
System requirements:
HTC Sync (or ADB drivers)
Desire HD with build number 1.72 or higher
Not sure how this is related to me as mine is currently on 1.39

OK, I got you, the post wasn't that clear. Your now stock 1.39 considering upgrade to 1.72 or other OTA update / ROM?
If you upgrade OTA, it will "unroot" your phone, and then you'll have to follow the steps (or some of) I outlined in my previous post. That is if you wish to have root again.
If you wish to upgrade and have root, best bet would be to just install a custom 1.78 ROM and kernal to match.
Yes, for now I just want to upgrade to stock HTC 1.72 and perhaps later flash a custom Rom as I am not very clues up on Android devices ( coming from wm environment) as my previous post what should be my next step ( clean HTC stock Rom ) ?

How do I check my CID ? I cant seem to see it in the bootloader screen ? and anyone know what simlock image crc etc do?
I'd recommend getting permanent root (visionary), eng s-off AND radio s-off, install rom manager from market and flash clockwork mod recovery from it, and then there is a guide on here to upgrade to 1.72 without losing root, by flashing it through clockwork mod.
Still, the easier option is to install a custom rom since those will obviously not try to unroot your phone.

From Fastboot menu -> Bootloader -> System Info
If Super CID, should have CID-11111111, meaning carrier ID unlocked, enabling flashing of ROM other than carrier specific (I think).
Image CRC - not too sure, possibly checksum of certain working harware, radio etc?????????? Anyone?
For the dutch who want to root there 1.72 DHD....

Yes, I know. Why do I want to unroot? Well, the AT&T Nexus One is stuck on 2.1 update 1 and the baseband of the phone is unlocked.
How can I return to bone stock so that I receive all OTA updates. I'm good with what google pushes out and really don't want to fool with homebaked updates.
Thanks!
Read my signature, follow "unroot/restore" guide.
Your bootloader has been unlocked, not baseband. So follow the guide for unlocked bootloader. Use FRG83G ROM straight from HTC.
Thanks. Doing this now.
Actually, do I just follow the "fastboot" method and that's it?

The phone I have already has an unlocked boot loader (there is an "unlocked" lock image below the nexus image upon reboot).
I believe returning to stock is as easy as downloading a factory N1 image, re-naming it to update.zip (or is it passimg.zip?) and running it from the boot loader...right?
I'm actually afraid to do this for fear of bricking this thing. All I want to do is go to a stock version of Android from the current 2.1-update1 Build EPE54B rom that came with this N1 so I can OTA up to the current 2.2.2 (or whatever) official google version is out. I'd like to go OTA from here on out, which the phone will not do now (stuck on 2.1 and saying "your software is up to date").
Is it as easy as what I suggested or am I a mega-noob?
Sorry for giving you the wrong info, I miss read the thread. I havent ever unrooted would hate to give you the wrong advice on the proccess. Sorry Im not more help
Since you are rooted and nervous about bricking your phone you can do this.
Flash a custom recovery if there is not one already on the phone via rom manager. Then in rom manager back up your rom (nandroid) . There is even a stock rom in rom manager that you can download and install all in rom manager. That will put the default recovery back as well. The phone will then the OTA's to the latest one.
Or you can just flash any other rom etc. It is really hard to actually brick the phone.

Thanks. Downloaded the Rom Manager, and guess what? The phone isn't rooted (I don't know anything about it .... just received it used from eBay).
The boot loader is definitely unlocked though and it's stuck on 2.1.
I will figure out the one-click root and go from there. Is that the best advice?

I would go that route if I was you. It is very quick and simple and noob friendly. You could also use the guides the other posters put up to learn some things as well.
Not sure why your phone is "stuck" at 2.1 in the first place. But yeah rooting/rom manager should do the trick quickly and easy.
Turns out I was able to install superuser, so it's rooted. Not sure why Rom manager complained about it not being rooted.
This is a pain in the ass so far. I will just try to flash to a ~light~ 2.3 ROM. Don't want a bunch of battery draining stuff. Recommendations?
Also, I still want to go to bone stock so I can get google OTAs. Oh well. Maybe I'll figure it out one day.

The 2.3 ROMs aren't really "ready" yet, and I don't know if I would really recommend them to a new user. Very buggy. If you can get ROM Manager to work (which should be as easy as installing it from the Market if you have root), then go to "Download ROM" and find your way to CyanogenMod 6.1.1. It will ask you if you want to install gapps as well, and you should select yes.
Once a phone has been unlocked and had custom roms installed on it, there's no way to ever go back to completely stock with OTA updates unfortunately. CyanogenMod is probably the cleanest and most supported rom you can find, but another would be Enomther's (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=614427).

Thanks. Well, I'm a total idiot. My passion.zip was passion.zip.zip. Nonetheless, the FAQ .zip original image file was "older than the currently installed version."
I'm done. I'm just going to play in the rooted 2.3 world. Currently downloading CyanogenMod's latest nightly for passion.
So, I am curious. Does this file I'm downloading update the radio and everything else? I'm certain the firmware versions for the radio, etc, are outdated.
Thanks.
EDIT: On second thought, is there a large reason not to go with a nightly? The latest stable version is two months old...I want clean and fast with minimal battery drain, etc.
You can always go back to stock and get the OTAs from Google. Only thing you can't do is relock the bootloader. ALWAYS can do it.

The only reason not to go with the nightly build is stability. CM7 isn't ready for general use yet, and there are a lot of problems still. Last time I used it the phone app was almost completely unusable and would lock up whenever someone called. It doesn't hurt to try it out though. You can always flash something else if it's not stable enough for you.

Nope, this isn't true. Once the signed boot loader is replaced, there's no more OTA's. You can get the notification that an update is available, but they wont install. Once the clockwork or ra_recovery are installed, OTAs will never work again. There is currently NO way to go back to 100% stock on a Nexus One.

its not defective and at this point its just a matter of time until you fix it.
If you still want to be stock, ignore below and follow the links to restoring the stock rom above.
a) do you have a custom recovery installed? (i.e a nice navigable menu) if not flash one from a terminal/shell (on your desktop) in fastboot mode (power+trackball to start the phone, choose fastboot)
b)since you dont have much to lose, wipe everything after rebooting into recovery mode.
c)flash any ROM that works with your phone. (the LCD nexus ones need a different version I think)
When you install a stock rom it overwrites the custom recovery everytime it boots. It always does this. The unlocked boot loader is irrelevant the OTA's.
He or anybody else can flash a stock rom and get the ota.

As title says - how do I re-stock or waht precautions must I take to flash a Cyanogen on a HTC Desire Z (unbranded European) that has been modded and unlocked to run MIUI using com.modaco.visionary.r14 and gFree from MIUI's website, without bricking it?
And if you know a good Sense 3.5 ROM and a recovery PCIMG10.zip, do tell me
I normally have no problem with doing this myself - have flashed since G1/HTC Magic, but I'm a bit unsure about the procedure, being that I hand-flashed the eMMC with gFree pre using MIUI's tools. Thank you for your time in advance! -)
the pc10img.zip you asked for:
http://www.virtuousrom.com/2011/06/t-mobile-g2-users-migrating-to-desirez.html
about the re-stock thing, i don´t know what visionary does to our phones... so sry can´t help you in that point.
Don't understand why you would want to go back to stock in order to flash CM7 (or CM9, if that is what you are looking to do).
If your phone is S-Off and rooted (which it is if you ran Visionary and gfree, and you have MIUI on the phone) then you can flash any custom ROM. Just flash from ROM Manager, or from Recovery.
Just wanted to be sure that would work without bricking, since I used MIUI's tools after manually using gfree and visionary for S-Off and the manual eMCC-block writing. Considering stock is because its for a woman, who doesn't have a smart phone, has never used one and mainly don't like them due to the lack of keyboard. Hence I thougth stock migth be the safest way to go for the user, being her second thougths and first time user experience Many thanks for your time and answers!
Honestly, I wouldn't even worry about returning to stock s-on, etc. Majority of the people don't even know those tools exist unless they go looking for it. I'd say just flash a good ROM, and have at it.

Well, in Denmark we are quite different to the rest of the world. I own and run one of DK's largest Android portals http://www.androidgeek.dk. And we have a well-selling Android magazine that in is 3rd issue used 6 pages on covering how to gain S-OFF, flash and use ROM Manager, Super One Click, AplphaRevX and ADB ;-) And being written with step-guides my mother could follow, so I won't exactly say "most" nowadays don't know our power tools.
Knowledge is freedom - and it keeps your handset and tablet free as you wish it ;-)
Working: OTA updates on a rooted device with an unlocked bootloader
Ok, finally i've managed to do an OTA update on a rooted device with unlocked bootloader, using the following steps:
Step 1: flash back the stock recovery (can be found in the OTA update rar file, in the firmware package).
Step 2: install back the missing APK files, lost during unlocking the bootloader (can be found here: http://sharesend.com/ulxcsxa9)
Step 3: Perform the OTA update normally
Step 4: Flash back the custom recovery using fastboot
Step 5: Go to the custom recovery en press reboot system, in my case CWM asked me to Fix the root and i did.
Notice that there will be no loss of any data, everything should be working fine after following these steps. Just flash back the custom recovery and regain root acces (if CWM won't ask to do it for you) by using rooting tools or rootkeeper.
I think you mean recovery instead of bootloader in steps 1, 4, and 5.

This is nothing new but it's a good guide anyway and if you made OTA updates work with a custom recovery etc then that would be excellent news.
Hey it seems like the files in the OP don't exist or sharesend hates me, if someone could reupload them that would be awesome.

Any link for the Stock kernel and recovery?
Thanks
You mean this works with custom ROM, or should I flash back stock rom ? (I only find OTA for 2.24.401.1)
Edit : I've lost my nandroid backup of stock rom trying unsuccessfully to change firmware...
Just wondering if #3 is absolutely required? Cuz I think most custom ROM has at least some of these APK cooked-in.

Checked on ARDH. Some of them are missing...
Okay now my main question is, Since taking the OTA is possible on a stock custom Rom, if I have the 1.27.531.11 firmware update (tmobile) and I wanted to flash the 1.27.531.7 Rom, and take the .8 OTA, would it restore the .8 1.44 hboot that wasn't modified and allow me to S-Off? I got as far as trying to take the OTA but it didn't work because I forgot to flash the missing apk's.

OTA's only work if you are completely stock, if you change some system file the update will fail, so on custom roms official otas will never work

Yes, I know that, that's why I'm searching for a stock 2.24.401.1 rom to install on my device. I found a deodexed one (very slow download - about half an hour for 3%) but don't know if it fits ?
can I install an OTA ROM (I downloaded one but I'm afraid to make a mistake)
I searched a lot and I am asking in several threads, and still no answer...

I think you want something else than otas but you thinks otas are the solution to your problem, so you are focussing on getting otas to work but what do you really want fixed?
Anyway deodexed roms don't get otas either only stock odexed roms

Thank you for the second part of your answer. for the first part, I have a good running device with ARDH 13.3 and no problem,
I want OTA updates only for firmware update as I don't have s-off. so with ARDH it is impossible. I need a stock ROM that matches my device ( 2.24.401.1 and CID HTC_102) where can I get that?

If you want otas, ask Mike why he choses not to do them, else just put up with checking the thread and downloading+installing a new version every couple of weeks. If you want OTAs on ARHD Mike needs to let them happen, no amount of tinkering on your part, even with s-off, will achieve this

Uh, I think the poster is referring to official OTAs with firmware updates, not OTA updates to ARHD
