So my usb port is wacked on my phone and the sprint store won't repair it cause of "signs" of water damage. So I bought a epic with a clean esn that had been thrashed, slider messed up, no touch, colors are wonky but good battery good charge and it boots fine. My questions are, is the esn tied to the logic board or a specific chip somewhere else in the phone? Also would the dramage describe lead anyone to think that the board would have any issues? Thanks in advance.

I would think the board should be fine to swap out. It should be easy to switch them. Don't even have to take phone all the way apart, just remove the screws and carefully pull the back off. As far as I know its not tied to anything that would prevent you from having it work.

The board is most definitely tied to the esn, and it's not on some sort of removable part or anything. The esn *should* be flashed to the memory of the cdma chip, but I'm not exactly sure where.
Either way, each board is unique in that each has a different serial that can not be changed without really special software.
That's isn't to say you couldn't just swap the board over and change your esn with sprint. Of course that'll work.
Actually, looking back, I'm not sure i interpreted your post correctly lol.

Yeah u definitely read that wrong...
The board is the only part tied to the esn. The whole point of the OP question was to swap boards and change the esn registered to his account to the new one. I really think u missed the point of his question and my response. He just wants to swap hardware. No software modding.

If he can read the esn off the other board he can just activate the new esn since he said it was clean.

Yep. Even if there is no sticker. He can go to settings, about phone, status and it has the meid hex there as well.

Wow thanks guys I thought the esn would be tied to the logic board, which happens to be the board with the usb port on it, so I will need to switch the esn once I move the new board to my old phone. Also side note I booted the broken phone into recovery 2e and I can't get it back out because the captivate buttons are shot. I left the battery out all night but it still just boots right into recovery, anything I should worry about? I figure I can just boot out of it after I make the swap, since my captivate buttons do work. Sorry if my post is kinda jarbled.

I've boughten bad esn phones as dev phones so I can flash things and test things out on a phone that I don't have to rely on before putting it onto my main phone. Or some people use them for parts, or to flash. Theres a market for them for sure, but I always wonder how did they become bad esn phones lol.
To have a bad esn is if its lost/stolen then VZW or whoever locks it out of their system forever untill the person who lost it says they got it back and reactivates it. Or if someone doesnt pay their bill and the phone is on the account, it turns into a bad esn.
Hahaha so its like buying a stereo with the serial scratched off

I buy for parts, specially the screen If the price is right.

Yup just sold three bad esn phones today that will be flashed to Cricket, one to Pocket. I have another phone, a verizon tour with a bad esn, that I just unlocked to use on AT&T. I buy them very cheap unlock or flash and resell them for more.
Muahaha
So I was talking to Sprint and they finally processed an exchange for my Epic. Problem is, I went to stock with odin and everything is working fine now!! Sadly, the replacement has already been sent out and I'm left with a "good" phone. The problem is now that my phone is working fine what do I do?! I'm really scared I'll get billed 500 for shipping in a non defective phone.
-desperate for help

Pretty sure you're going to be fine, as long as there is no cosmetic damage to the phone that they can blame any of your problems on.

Hmm I have some scratches on the side its minor though the silver was kinda chipping off like really minor though.
Would going to DK28 then stock 2.1 create problems with the phone?

Pull the plug in the middle of using odin. That'll make it not work for sure.

Probably not, unless you had some existing hardware problem or something.

You won't get charged as along as you !send the phone back!..
and really..
I have never heard of them charging for a rooted phone.. They reflash it and move on at qa.. They might charge back a percentage of the cost from the rep but not you, the customer, as there is technically no official stance from the company about rooting. Just that, if you have a problem with the device, the next troubleshooting step is to reflash the stock software because you cannot guarantee the same "experience" on a custom rom. And some custom roms remove troubleshooting modes and the sprint version of QPST..
*edit * for the cosmetic damage reference..
Sprint now covers any physical damage except severely damaged LCDs.. As long as its not a purely *cosmetic* repair.. (ie replacing housing for scratches) but as long as there is a stated issue with the device (freezing due to processor damage from a fall) it is covered at no cost if you have insurance.

So I found a guy that will swap me a brand new Nexus S 4G for my Epic.
Any harm in providing him the DEC?
Also, is there anything in particular I should look for on his Nexus? I have never done a swap like this before.

Hmmmm, why did he say that he wanted it?
EDIT: Ohhhh I'm an idiot. I believe he wants to check your ESN.
And the most important of all else is his ESN clean? If it isn't you're in trouble.
Yeah, he did mention that he wanted to check the ESN. How do I check his?
If you can, preform the swap at a sprint store to check the ESN. His ESN.

Before anything else, AC is right, you should meet up at a Sprint door with the guy to validate everything. But here is a site to check.
http://www.checkesnfree.com/multicheck.html
I would have used it to be make sure it's legit but I'm in the middle of a phone call. -___-' Sorry man.
Cool, thanks guys!

So what I have also learned today is that Sprint will check the ESN for you via the customer service line. Just call and give it to them.
Sure they can check it over the phone, but like others have said it is best to perform any purchases/trades at a physical Sprint store location. That way they can update the ESN right there.
I've heard of people purchasing a cell phone from CL and by the time they get home the "seller" claims to have lost it so they end up with a phone with a Bad ESN- in fact someone here on XDA had that happen to them.
Yeah, I ended up not doing it. Too many things that didn't click for me so I backed off. Not worth screwing myself over.

I recommend the in store option for this reason. Most of the reps at my store would be happy to do it.

You can do it right on the spot just call sprint rep and ask to check that number for you if legit no need to go home first.

Without talking about insurance or fraud in any way cause I don't want my thread shut down! Can I use an evo that has been given to me by a friend cause he shattered the screen. He reported it stolen to get a replacement one. And I intend to fix the screen
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
You definately won't be able to use it as a phone.
But if you fix the screen there's no reason why you can't use it as a media player or wifi only device

Shouldn't Be to hard, replacement screen was only $12. 00 on Amazon and the double sided tape is 6.00 just have to take it apart and replace it

You could sell it to someone for flashing to use on another network... Try craigslist or eBay once you have the screen fixed up. Be sure to mention that it has a bad ESN so the customers know what they're getting.

If you go to a local repair shop they ll fix it for around 50
I have a dead mt4g with a bad eemc (confirmed) that is out of warranty, due to my self repair of the digitizer twice. I've replaced the phone already.
The back cover is clean, the chrome is a little worn, and the LCD and digitizer are good. All buttons are good. The eemc died Monday after a mass cleanup on the phone and the phone won't turn on, and when on USB, asks for a QHSUSB_DLOAD.
I'm asking all in one, as I don't really want to rip the phone apart again. Email in my profile.
