I dont quite see the point. Anyone have any info?

You can flash then use them on other networks, i.e. Metro PCS

Or Cricket o.o

If only those networks didnt suck
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

I've boughten bad esn phones as dev phones so I can flash things and test things out on a phone that I don't have to rely on before putting it onto my main phone. Or some people use them for parts, or to flash. Theres a market for them for sure, but I always wonder how did they become bad esn phones lol.

To have a bad esn is if its lost/stolen then VZW or whoever locks it out of their system forever untill the person who lost it says they got it back and reactivates it. Or if someone doesnt pay their bill and the phone is on the account, it turns into a bad esn.

Hahaha so its like buying a stereo with the serial scratched off

I buy for parts, specially the screen If the price is right.

Yup just sold three bad esn phones today that will be flashed to Cricket, one to Pocket. I have another phone, a verizon tour with a bad esn, that I just unlocked to use on AT&T. I buy them very cheap unlock or flash and resell them for more.

i was tricked into buyin an EVO with a esn number

what can i do with a evo with bad esn number? can i offer it to sprint for the buy back program to get evo 3d or will i get in trouble?
You might just be screwed. That's why you always meet at a sprint/verizon store when purchasing local because they can check if the esn is good it bad.
Wait for more input though, I have never dealt with a cdma device except for a razr that I once flashed from sprint to verizon.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Well, a friend of mines found a phone for verizon and took it to verizon to activate it. The reps told him the esn was used. He told them he bought it off of craigslist and had no clue so they activated on his line feeling sorry for him. Now this was Verizon and maybe he got lucky but, hopefully this story helps you out. I hate it when people screw other people over.
I know you can flash Sprint phones to metro pcs. Not sure if it can be done for a phone with a bad esn?

Your best bet is to sell it on Craigslist I know it can be flash to Boost mobile even with a bad esn... hope that helps

Yes they do. They, and every other store that buys back phones, are required to check the esn.

No you cant flash a sprint phone to Boost with a bad esn. Its all the same network.
Your best bet would list on Ebay and craigslist. Specifically state that it has a bad esn. Tell them that you CAN flash and change things to work on metro or cricket and you can make your money back. I had the same problem and actually made money.
Or you can pay what they owe to Sprint.....right???

You can easily sell it on ebay for $150+. Just state it has a bad esn. I sold my friends phone on there for $156 2 weeks ago.

wow that site just told me my bad ESN evo i've been using on Cricket for a year actually has a clean esn....lol
anyway, even if it has a bad ESN it can be used on Cricket or MetroPCS. $55 a month for unlimited everything (well no 4g) isn't a bad deal for an Evo.....

Is there information genuine? I just tried it on a Samsung A900 I bought off ebay a while ago with a bad ESN... Well I guess it was supposed to be bad... And this site says its clear??? Weird...

I bought a bad esn evo and verified it was lost/stolen using that site. Haven't used it other than that.
I think the best option would be to "flash" the phone to boost mobile. Then you can either sell it or keep it on boost for yourself. The reason I think this would be your best option (besides just reselling it to someone who wants it perhaps) is because putting the phone on boost requires changing the esn, so it doesn't matter if the phone has a bad esn.

Their program isn't a buy back program, it's a recycling program. Doesn't matter if the ESN is bad or not, they take it for store credit. I know this, because I used to work at a Radio Shack.

It wouldn't be bad, but if a company doesn't have the IMEI numbers they can't force you to pay for data. At least I think that's what they are getting at. That and/or they can get dumb phone internet for cheaper since it won't be registered as a smartphone (but as an "other" or unidentified).
I could be way off though.

Tmo didn't have our phones imei so when I bought my phone cash I didn't need data.. what don't you get?

They don't need your phone's IMEI to tell if its a smart phone or not, as soon as you plug in the sim card they know what phone you have.
That being said, that cad from Samsung is definitely fake. I have gotten more professional looking letters from my cable company.

DEC Number

So I found a guy that will swap me a brand new Nexus S 4G for my Epic.
Any harm in providing him the DEC?
Also, is there anything in particular I should look for on his Nexus? I have never done a swap like this before.

Before anything else, AC is right, you should meet up at a Sprint door with the guy to validate everything. But here is a site to check.

So what I have also learned today is that Sprint will check the ESN for you via the customer service line. Just call and give it to them.
Sure they can check it over the phone, but like others have said it is best to perform any purchases/trades at a physical Sprint store location. That way they can update the ESN right there.
I've heard of people purchasing a cell phone from CL and by the time they get home the "seller" claims to have lost it so they end up with a phone with a Bad ESN- in fact someone here on XDA had that happen to them.
Yeah, I ended up not doing it. Too many things that didn't click for me so I backed off. Not worth screwing myself over.

Can I use my new Broken EVO?

Without talking about insurance or fraud in any way cause I don't want my thread shut down! Can I use an evo that has been given to me by a friend cause he shattered the screen. He reported it stolen to get a replacement one. And I intend to fix the screen

You definately won't be able to use it as a phone.
But if you fix the screen there's no reason why you can't use it as a media player or wifi only device

Shouldn't Be to hard, replacement screen was only $12. 00 on Amazon and the double sided tape is 6.00 just have to take it apart and replace it

You could sell it to someone for flashing to use on another network... Try craigslist or eBay once you have the screen fixed up. Be sure to mention that it has a bad ESN so the customers know what they're getting.

Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda premium
This is a CDMA handset, so we don't have a sim slot.
As for flashing to another provided, you can flash this over to MetroPCS, Virgin Mobile, Boost Mobile, and possibly Straight Talk?
Edit: OR you can do the RIGHT thing and return it as everyone has been saying
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Or you can do the god damn decent thing, call Sprint, let them know you found the phone and give them the ESN, and let them get it returned to the owner who's probably not looking forward to having to pay a $100 deductable.

CDMA so if the owner calls sprint that he or she lost it, it will be blacklisted.
The phone won't be able to be activated over Sprint.
However, you could have it work on other carrier.
Best thing to do is, call the owner and ask for decent 30 ish dollar for doing a good deed.

AH, but the question is if the original owner already paid his $100 to get a new phone, is Sprint honest and diligent enough to offer that phone back to the owner with a clear ESN?

This..
Most likely the person who "lost" the phone has already coughed up the cash for a replacement, thus the blacklisted ESN. Would Sprint clear the esn and give it back to the owner? I'd say probably not if they've already got the money from them for a replacement.

Sprint shoud care less. It's an assurion issue and doesn't affect sprint. If you call them and tell them someone returned the phone to you, they should reinstate the esn. I actually had that happen. Of course the guy returned it all dinged up. Probably threw it when he found out he couldn't use it. But they did reinstate it.
The op just sounds like a drain on society.
