[Q] Kobo App on Unrooted Kindle Fire? - Kindle Fire General

I have searched the site and all I have found was a misleading thread about install googleframeworks to sideload apks on the fire.
Is it possible to sideload the kobo app to my daughter's fire? My kobo library is pretty extensive and I would love to share my books with her.

do you have another device? if so you can get dropbox and just send the link to yourself. it should work fine

Yes I did it... you just gotta find it

[Q]Can I put .mobi from my computer to KF?

Hi, Im really interested to buy a KF, it look it no a big deal, but 199dls is, from my point view, excelent if we think about ROMs and the best place to do that, xda developers.
I just want to know a few thinks:
1.- Can I put kindle books (mobi) from my computer to KF?...
2.- Same before but with apk files, can I send .apks from my computer to KF and then install those apps?..
Please if someone know this answer me, and sry about my basic english
1. The Kindle for PC, Kindle for Android, and e-ink Kindle all allow this so the odds are good that it will work. I use Calibre to convert my stuff to .mobi and add the Amazon ID so whispersync works.
2. Yes, sideloading is possible and there is an app called easy installer that makes it....."Easy"

I'm new to this, but how do you add the Amazon ID as you described above so that Whispersync works? I've been searching on the web and I can't seem to find anything.
Thanks!
Just tried it on my kf and it works =)

It's a plugin for the Calibre ebook manager it's called the Amazon Metadata Download Plugin.
From within Calibre, there is an edit MetaData button. You can choose to search lots of places, make sure Amazon is checked, but leaving the others checked as well doesn't hurt if you are having cover problems, it still gets Amazon ID.
Hope this helps.

Was it sideloading .apk's or copying .mobi that you tried. Grats on getting your Fire already.
i just uploaded the .mobi directly into the books folder that is on the fk mount

Am about to buy the Kindle Fire in Canada, quick questions about rooting/location...

Hi guys,
Am about to purchase a KF tomorrow, but I wanted to go over some things quickly.
I know to use this in Canada, such as amazon prime (which I'm not a member of anyway) I have to have a VPN from the states. If I don't use a VPN from the states, am I still able to use the Kindle, or will it stop me at the registration page? If I have to use a VPN from the US, how hard is it to setup? I share my router with my family, would that cause issues?
Assuming I can avoid the VPN route, I would like to root my Kindle to have access to android marketplace. Once I route it, will I be able to access android marketplace instantly, even if I don't have an american VPN?
And finally, am I able to transfer stuff to kindle, such as books from mediafire that were free, and mp3's without having to go through amazon? Do they have their "desktop manager" for the KF or something?
Sorry for all the questions, been trying to do some research and just wanted clarification,
Thanks, any help/advice is appreciated!
Canadian Kindle Fire user here.
To answer your questions, you can definitely register the Kindle Fire easily out of the box with Amazon. As far as I know, they do not care what IP you come from during the registration process. Once you register, your KF will show up on your Amazon.com page under Manage Your Kindle. So simply put, registration is a breeze.
The KF does not have the ability to connect to a VPN (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1376742) but I have read that a lot of people have been successful with Unblock US (http://unblock-us.com/). As I understand it, they use DNS masking rather than having traffic route through a VPN. I haven't tried it yet but they do have a free trial so there's no risk. I am holding out for a VPN solution because I have already paid for a VPN service. Assuming Unblock Us works, you will have access to Amazon Prime (theoretically) and Netflix US. I do know that Netflix US does check for a US address on your credit card before allowing you to register ... I assume Amazon Prime does the same but your first month is a free trial so there is no need to verify a US address on a credit card as you don't enter it when registering. I would assume that when you go to renew, you will have to find a work around in order to allow Amazon to let you register/pay for Amazon Prime.
I tried sending a PDF to my KF yesterday using the provided email address [email protected] but I have not received it. Not sure why that is ... I have a 2 other Kindles so I know it's not a 'I'm an idiot and don't know how to use the Kindle interface' ... but you can definitely use a USB cable to transfer your content over. Alternatively, you could easily set up a Dropbox account and install the Dropbox apk onto the KF and get content that way.
Let me know if you have any other questions. Everyone in Canada is stumbling their way through this so remember the novel that I wrote for you and pay it forward when you can help a forum member. Cheers

Jayce, thank you so much for the info!
I have some friends who are in the same boat as me, but your info is a huge help and convinced me to purchase the KF.
Will probably send you a PM if I have any questions and will forward your post to anyone who asks a similar question.
Thanks!
Sure thing. No problem but if you have a general question that might benefit the community, feel free to leave it here.
Canadian Kindle
I bought mine a few weeks ago, rooted it, installed Google apps, and basically made it an Android tablet. it works like a charm, GMail, Maps, Market, Calander (synced), Go Launcher, and Titanium BU.
It took some reading (XDA), ADB, and some learning but it works; I still can't buy software from Amazon but I can buy it from Google Market. I can however buy books from Amazon and read them on my Kindle App. Most of the time I download the app onto my Razr, and then send the apk file to my Kindle using Gmail.
All in all I am very happy with it.
Bought the kindle fire, rooted it, love it so far!
The only issue I'm having is that I downloaded the android marketplace app, after rooting it, but it simply says "you must add an account to use this device..." to which I say yes, and then it boots me out back to the home screen.
I tried looking up videos on how to install android marketplace (vender apk, root explorer all installed) but still no luck.
I also grabbed the Go Ex Launcher, but can't figure how to access my videos folder.
Great device though, so glad I picked one up

Try following the steps here:
http://www.kindlefirewire.com/2011/11/17/how-to-install-android-market-on-kindle-fire/
This worked like a charm and assuming you used Super1Click, it should be very easy for you as well.
As far as videos go, I use MX Video and it automatically discovers videos on my SD partition. I load them into my KF using a USB cable.

You will be able to use the KF like any other Android tablet to read email, internet browsing, running android applications and play games. However, without rooting, you have to side install applications. This method is not friendly. To be able to install applications to install from Google Ply Store, you need to root the KF. There are some simple guides available in this XDA forum that are good for you to read to explore deeply the KF as a wonderfully android tablet. Here is a link to one of many simple guides:

[Q] Text To Speech on Fire?

Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone has tried to install Liquendo Susan or any other tts engine on the fire? I use it with moon reader plus on my Infuse 4g running 2.2 Froyo and it works for epub books at least. I really dont want to go to all the trouble of rooting this thing to find out it wont work. I dont think I will be keeping it if I cant get it to read books to me. The android stuff is cool and all but my phone does all that stuff.
Its my own damn fault for asuming Amazon would inculde a TTS engine like thier previous versions. Really sad about this because I like it otherwise. I have rooted my phone so I think I can root the device but dont know if its worth all the risk and trouble if it wont run a TTS engine.
Thanks for your help, love the forum keep up the good work.
Doc
have'nt tried this and can't remember to to have read about it in the forum
you can be the first and share your experience
can't think why it should not work
I installed Liquendo Susan and the test works fine... but there is no way to activate it for the device as a default.
To the best of my knowledge, TTS does not work on the Kindle app.

Thanks Guys,
Here is the thing. I have this setup working on my Infuse 4g. The kindle app isnt used for reading I use Moon+ Reader Pro with TTS option. I have to convert my kindle books to .epub in calibre but it works. I can get decent TTS reading on my phone. Let me perhaps be a bit more clear on my question.
IF I root the phone and install Liquendo Suasan TTS engine, Moon+ Reader Pro (both of which I would have to repurchase and download from the Android market) and then used Moon+ Reader to read .epub converstions that I moved on and off the Fire via.. Dropbox lets say.. do you think other than surrendering almost 1GB of storage for this setup, would that be a functional work around on the Fire? I know it works on 2.2 Froyo but that is on a phone that came with PICO installed as a default engine.
Apparently the demo version of Liquendo worked, there is part of the answer, any thoughts on the rest?
Thanks,
DOC
ONLY the demo worked within the app itself. NOTHING else would use Liquendo Suasan. I could find no way to activate it as the TTS. Unless you can do that, it won't do what you are asking.
BTW, I didn't need to repurchase it. I just side loaded it from my Droid Incredible which I purchased it on.

[Q] Is a Kindle Fire with a Custom ROM a Kindle Device?

Ok, I don't know how to such for such a thread, and from what I searched, I couldn't find any. The question that I have is this.
My Kindle Fire is an Amazon Kindle Device. It is supposed to behave like any other Kindle device in being able to download books through Whispernet and such.
Should I root and install a custom rom, I will still be able to read Kindle books, by installing the Kindle app, but then what do I lose in the form of the 'Kindle' experience?
Will there be any content or features that I will lose out by modding the device? The device will behave like any other smartphone, but what Kindle features will I be losing out on?
Inputs much appreciated? Thanks.
No Prime Video
You can still read books and such but u will not be able to use amazon prime's direct video streaming

At least for on the Modaco rom you can get an app called "ota rootkeeper" that gives you temporary unroot with the tap of a button, then you can use Amazon video, then just tap it again and it's back to rooted.

I suppose kindle is equal book reading experience, and I enjoy my rooted kindle fire, no change as far as book reading is concerned, other features are just bonus
If you install a custom ROM then you will not be able to use amazon instant streaming or kindle owners lending library. If you only root it then if you want to watch amazon video you should follow above instructions on temporarily unrooting.

[Q] Rooted KF But No Sync for Books?

i'm rooted with an excellent HellFire ROM. I'm still on 6.2.2 using the Kindle app as my reader.
I can't seem to get my Kindle Fire Kindle reader app to sync my reading positions with my other devices. In other words, I've read to page 100 on my GNex, and my Transformer Prime, but when I try and sync to the same point in the same book on my KF, it says I'm already at the furthest point. It is showing up on the Amazon web site and I can download/buy books from Amazon using my KF.
Just wondering if anyone else has this problem? Is it because I'm not on 6.3? Also, what triggers an OTA update for the Kindle Fire?
Thanks
Just a thought... Have you deregistered it and re-registered it?
