Ok, I don't know how to such for such a thread, and from what I searched, I couldn't find any. The question that I have is this.
My Kindle Fire is an Amazon Kindle Device. It is supposed to behave like any other Kindle device in being able to download books through Whispernet and such.
Should I root and install a custom rom, I will still be able to read Kindle books, by installing the Kindle app, but then what do I lose in the form of the 'Kindle' experience?
Will there be any content or features that I will lose out by modding the device? The device will behave like any other smartphone, but what Kindle features will I be losing out on?
Inputs much appreciated? Thanks.
No Prime Video
You can still read books and such but u will not be able to use amazon prime's direct video streaming

At least for on the Modaco rom you can get an app called "ota rootkeeper" that gives you temporary unroot with the tap of a button, then you can use Amazon video, then just tap it again and it's back to rooted.

I suppose kindle is equal book reading experience, and I enjoy my rooted kindle fire, no change as far as book reading is concerned, other features are just bonus
If you install a custom ROM then you will not be able to use amazon instant streaming or kindle owners lending library. If you only root it then if you want to watch amazon video you should follow above instructions on temporarily unrooting.

Hi, Im really interested to buy a KF, it look it no a big deal, but 199dls is, from my point view, excelent if we think about ROMs and the best place to do that, xda developers.
I just want to know a few thinks:
1.- Can I put kindle books (mobi) from my computer to KF?...
2.- Same before but with apk files, can I send .apks from my computer to KF and then install those apps?..
Please if someone know this answer me, and sry about my basic english
1. The Kindle for PC, Kindle for Android, and e-ink Kindle all allow this so the odds are good that it will work. I use Calibre to convert my stuff to .mobi and add the Amazon ID so whispersync works.
2. Yes, sideloading is possible and there is an app called easy installer that makes it....."Easy"

I'm new to this, but how do you add the Amazon ID as you described above so that Whispersync works? I've been searching on the web and I can't seem to find anything.
Thanks!
Just tried it on my kf and it works =)

It's a plugin for the Calibre ebook manager it's called the Amazon Metadata Download Plugin.
From within Calibre, there is an edit MetaData button. You can choose to search lots of places, make sure Amazon is checked, but leaving the others checked as well doesn't hurt if you are having cover problems, it still gets Amazon ID.
Hope this helps.

Was it sideloading .apk's or copying .mobi that you tried. Grats on getting your Fire already.
i just uploaded the .mobi directly into the books folder that is on the fk mount
Does that amazon video or prime work still once rooted? If not is there a way to work around it? I really want the android market but don't want to lose my month trial for prime which I'm using now.
How do you get vod or amazon prime video to work once rooted? I'm not rooted yet but taking the plunge tonight. BTW, What thread should I follow to root my KF and then install all the google apps?
Have a few more questions.
What launchers work on the KF? ADW, LP,etc.?
All keyboards work?
Is there any way to text on the kindle? That would help me so much.
What email apps do you reccomend, the stock email app is not agreeing with me.
Last.is there anyway to print from the kindle to my wireless printer?
There are tons of threads already answering most of these questions. Try a search first.

Amazon videos do not work while rooted. Simply keep your kindle fire unrooted when you're using it, as it won't affect your ability to use apps and settings configured during root.
No keyboards work currently. The fire has no official Bluetooth, though a there does seem to be a Bluetooth radio on the board. No one is sure at this time if it can be activated.
No one has been able to make Skype work for voice yet, but I believe you can text using it. I have not tested it though.
I think most of the launchers work though I only have experience with go launcher ex, which works great.
if you aren't rooted, you can use Kaiten Mail for most of your pop accounts. I use touchdown for my outlook mail but its a paid app. If you have rooted, you can install the standard Gmail app.
I have side loaded both the HP eprint local app and an app called Cloud Print that can use Google's cloud print service. Both work fine on my fire.
I installed "ota rootkeeper" via android market.. it makes a backup of your root in case an ota update deroots you. also it has a function where it can temporarily deroot you.. I used that and rebooted the kindle once and now I can play amazon prime videos again. and the apps I installed via android market all still work
After you temp deroot, You don't need to reboot the Kindle Fire to do that. Just stop the VOD service (Amazon Video), and it will work then.
After you restart the Amazon Video app, you can even reroot using the OTA Rootkeeper app and the Video will still work. This will probably work until the Video app is restarted or the Kindle is restarted -- whichever comes first.
Hey,
I installed CM7 on my KF according to the dev section. I installed the kindle app from the market as I obviously lost it in the process, sadly I can't seem to be able to load my own books on the fire (I am trying to read .mobi and .epub files).
Has anyone been able to accomplish this?

Sort of a glitchy workaround, but the Kindle app running in your launcher (CM7) seems to be pointing to an active read in your authentic KindleFire launcher. I was frustrated to see that the app was unresponsive until adding a link to the Fire launcher, selecting the literature of choice from that interface, and (if you so choose) only then would the Kindle app within CM7 activate within that book.
For now, the hot-route back to the Fire launcher works very well for accessing all of the books, etc; as well as the Prime video library.
Cheers!
I guess I answered my own question. You have to side-load the books to Android/data/com.amazon.kindle
However the app doesn't read epub files, but reads .mobi.
This kindle app version is not even close to be as good as the stock one.
I tried to install KindleForOtter from the 6.2 update but the kindle app won't even load then.
Although Aldiko is decent I don't really want to use it because it's not as good.
Any idea?
Also, does anyone know what kind of Fonts the stock kindle app uses?
THanks

I guess link may be a little misleading; I simply added the Amazon launcher to my taskbar for quickly getting back & forth between the two environments (stock & ADW).
HE is not on CM7. HE is stock, using an alternate launcher.
I am having the same issue. on CM7, I can not get the kindle app to even run.
Yeah that's what I figured.
Could someone please post the kindle stock apk? If its not called KindleForOtter.apk
http://www.mediafire.com/?az8obq77c7a7z39 this one?
Yeah so I guess this is the one and only. Sadly it doesnt work.
I just tested the method above with a stock/alternate launcher as you mentioned above. After exiting the alt launcher and using stock to first open a book; it was then accessible in the alt launcher via the Kindle Reader App... it loses the functionality of perusing multiple books, but as I said, seems to be a temporary workaround.

I believe you're still talking about an alternative launcher side-loaded with the stock fire.
I was talking about CM7 which I installed and wiped the stock fire launcher. Since it doesn't exist anymore, I can't side load it.
I was unable to get the Kindle Fire Kindle app to work. It would display the splash screen, and then go back to CM7 launcher....
I just went back to stock. If I cant use the Prime Amazon Video, use the Kindle App and get my loaner books, or get netflix to run smoothly with decent quality and synced Video and sound, I will wait until it can...

Yeah I understood you.
Could you please pull it out com.amazon.kindle.otter and upload it? Also tell me which folder it was in (full path).
Cheers
KindleforOtter.apk is located in the /system/app with permissions set to RW-R--R--. The ATVAndroidClient.ap is also in the /system/app directory with permissions set to RW-R--R--
The KindleforOtter.apk can be found here: http://www.mediafire.com/?az8obq77c7a7z39

Well thats progress at least. If I tried to launch my kindle app before, it wouldn't do anything, now it launches and crashes immediately. The amazon video app works but when I start watching a video com.amazon.avod crashes.
I'm not a coder so I'm not sure how to deal with processes and I couldn't find a folder for that but it seems that if I can side load com.amazon.avod and com.amazon.kindle.otter I could get further. I just don't know how to do it.
I think that version of kindle is a stripped down version without a library browser to complement the kindle fire launcher interface. The book selection was all done in the stock launcher. I remember once i had a book open I didnt need to use the stock launcher to open the kindle app.
I wanted Hulu on my kindle fire without paying for hulu plus so I found a hacked apk from the xoom and thought I would share the wealth. This apk makes it so that while browsing your Kindle looks like a windows computer and will allow access to flash apps that normally are only available to a PC. Works like a charm! Hulu looks really good and no sync issues. I haven't tried youtube yet, but I assume it works the same. I searched hacked flash apk in google and clicked a link to the xoom forums. I loaded the apk on my kindle and installed it.
link? i don't have issues with youtube, just hulu.
nvm, hulu works with dolphin browser, just flash didn't work with the firefox browser.
How did you get Hulu and Dolphin browser to work? I have a rooted device, installed Dolphin Browser form android market. Still didn't work.

When you set up dolphin browser for the first time it gives you an option to run your browser as android, load, mobile, or desktop. Select desktop and you should be good to go. You can also change this from the settings menu in dolphin after you installed it. I would post slink but since I'm new to xda I can't post links until I have 10 posts. I'm close now...haha. ill post a link as soon as I can. Sorry.
Well, Kindle Fire play Youtube videos fine, I have had no problem especially if you side load the youtube app, though I also got a free YouTube download from aneesoft to download videos, but to be frankly, the kindle play great and no need to do other works.
Hmm, Im curious how did you to watch Hulu plus smoothly on it??

1st- If you reply to this it will be your 10th message
2nd- I did select desktop but it still would not play.

Well, Hulu page loaded fine for me but I didn't try to play a video until now and I get the "platform not supported" when I try to play a video, so I guess it doesn't work after all.
On CM9 I can get the desktop version to load in chrome without android warning, but the video doesn't play. I installed flash, so thats not the problem. Wonder if its the hardware excel thats causing probs.
YouTube website works fine...
i just went to Hulu web site and KF is listed under supported devices..
I love these posts from new members that claim some app or site works on this device or that device, yet they don't post the link. Then they disappear from the thread.
I'm going to go start a new thread now, about how I found a hacked Netflix app that lets you watch anything without paying. Just don't hold your breath for a link.
It's the licensing
The way I understand it Hulu has license conflicts with some shows that preclude streaming them to a mobile device be it through their app or to an android or IOS based browser.
Those shows appear as "web only" in the Hulu+ favorites listing in the app.
True. Even on a ROKU, we get that message. The work around we use is Playon on our desktop computer. Hulu is accessed by the PC, so everything plays, then Playon shows up on the ROKU and streams Hulu (the regular free version of Hulu).
There is also a Playon app for Android, so you can watch Hulu on the Fire or any Android device. But no direct access to Hulu from KF afaik.

Ok, this I don't think will work on cm9, it may you'll have to try and report if it does. They were having an issue with flash in browser. So on miui, cm7, or maybe even rooted stock kindle. Here is the link
http://www.xoomforums.com/forum/motorola-xoom-development/9658-flash-latest-hulu-hacked-flash.html
1. Uninstall your current flash
2. Reboot
3. go to the link and in the first post and download the hulified v. 11.1... apk and install it.
4. Get dolphin browser and you should be good to go.
I forgot the issue about uninstalling and then doing a fresh install. There may also arise the issue of the flash apk being a system app, in that case you will need to use titanium backup to remove it before rebooting and installing the hacked apk.
Good luck guys!

PlayOn is $5 a month, but if you pay a full year in advance ($40), it works out to something like $3.30 a month. Cheaper than Hulu Plus.
Plus, you get several other "channels". Of course, your computer has to be running while your streaming. I'm just mentioning it as another option.

Since I rooted my Kindle Fire I was able to at first watch Amazon Prime Instant Video's with no issue. Well a week later I went to go stream a video and saw that the Watch Now button was grayed out. Under it was a under lined "Why can't I play or download?". When you press that it says " Attention - Your device is no longer configured correctly to play Amazon videos."
I did a full unroot and wipe of the system and once it was back to stock I could watch instant video's again with no problems. I just got thru Kindle Fire Utility v0.9.6 to root it and it's giving me the same problems.
Has anyone else ran into this and know of a solution?
