In an industry where customer churn can be likened to the fearsome troll under the bridge, Sprint has launched a program designed to keep its favored subscribers around for another two years. While not everyone is eligible -- those who've upgraded less than eight months ago, corporate outfits and those in collections need not inquire -- the program lets customers buy their way out of their current commitment and become eligible for a new, subsidized handset. The promotion begins February 12th and is set to run through the 14th of April, where the amount you pay correlates to the time since your last upgrade. So if you're currently pining for the Epic 4G Touch or the iPhone 4S, just give your local Sprint store a call this Sunday. They just may be able to hook you up.

And you know why sprint is offering this? Because they have no plans on releasing any new devices any time soon. So appease their customers, they're giving option to cheaply upgrade...... My theory Anyway

Sprint might be switching over to GSM, or at least dual-radioing their phones, what with Google taking down all CDMA support from the Android developers' page. (a guy can hope)

Probably because people like me, who have a family plan and are getting a discount through work, are able to cancel this month with no ETF fee.
They are probably launching this to lure those people who might leave to stay with Sprint.
I'll soon be saying goodbye to my trusty EVO 4G and picking up a free Galaxy S II on T-Mobile tomorrow.
Unfortunately there isn't really anything worthwhile to chose from. I'd rather wait until after some LTE phones are out.

Too little too late IMO. Sprint is losing tons of money. The only reason I stay with them is unlimited data, and when my contract is up in 2 months they better have the Sprint Nexus out and give it to me for a very good deal.
Verizon has better coverage, fast LTE and the Nexus - Sprint need to compete with that for the tons of people who were original Evo4G customers.
But the Verizon Nexus will not be capable of roms compiled from source due to CDMA support from Google being pulled (same as sprint), as per my understanding.

My kingdom for a Sprint Nexus.
This article seems to have went away..Anyone know where some info is on this? the link in the OP doesnt go anywhere but to the main site page now.
While the Nexus seems great, you have to be anxious for possible lte phones from sprint like the HTC Zeta (drool), HTC Edge, and the Sammy Galaxy SIII.
It is possible that Sprint will pick up at least one of these Q2 in 2012. After MWC we should know more.
I have been with sprint almost 20 years now, and 2 years ago they hooked me good with the Evo. Man I hope they get an equal replacement for everyone who purchased one 2 years ago and is ready for an upgrade.
It would be cool to have a phone as powerful as my Transformer Prime, and with better wifi....lol

I really hope that's not the truth. I'm excited to hear what the specs of the next EVO are going to be.... hopefully a quad core with a 4.5-4.65 in screen. That's the only way I'm going to use my upgrade.
*Edit*- And of course LTE.

Personally I think it has to do with Sprint's network. My tinfoil hat theory is that they don't have the cash to upgrade their network to keep pace with the other carriers so they're trying to lock people into contracts . From my perspective first and foremost is their lack of tower back haul and having the proper bandwidth available in many areas Secondarily, LTE won't be fully rolled out for quite a while.
I live in a small to medium sized city which has Div 1 university. I average 10-75 kbps each night when I get home from work and not much better when I leave in the mornings. Watching the network.spring.com website, there was to be a capacity upgrade to the tower closest to me. Now its not listed on the website anymore. Thanks Sprint.
Well I've looked all over the sprint website and still don't see the promo anywhere.

Besides the current top shelf smartphones, Evo 3d, Nexus, and epic....what does sprint have to offer right now that is truly an upgrade. The Evo has the most development I have ever seen on these forums. With all the current development for our Evo these phones just seem like a lateral movement. Especially with the upcoming line up from Samsung and HTC.
Not trying to argue. Maybe I'm not seeing all that's out there.
Thanks

Has anyone noticed the lack of EVO commercials lately, since the rumor of two more phones started?
The Nexus S is made by samsung, so does that mean updates never come out? Or because it's a Nexus it won't be an issue? The rumored specs don't seem that much better than my EVO, so no rush there. Anyone have the specs for the EVO 3D? I don't care about 3d, but a dual core and higher resolution would be nice.
Running CM7 with RC2 and my GPS locks quickly.

The Incredible commercials are out there because Verizon is doing something that Sprint doesn't do....put their phones on sale. I think they are selling the Dinc for $49.99. (I think I even saw somewhere you could get them free) Sprint is still selling the EVO for $199.99.

Actually, there's no real saving on Sprint when you compare hardware costs. I've looked at it...
I've seen Verizon offer their top tier phones at 1/2 price to free in the last year and Sprint is only $10/month cheaper on their monthly fee. Then when you figure in the coverage Verizon offers, for me, Verizon is the better value. I'm just waiting on an LTE Android phone, from Verizon, to make the switch.
I'm pretty sure you would save more than just 10 a month though.
Perhaps it's just in the South Florida market.
Although, if you watch Fringe, it is a non-stop EVO commercial.

There's really not that much of a difference between the costs of the two carriers now. Which definitely isnt going to play in Sprints favor in the long run.

true the price difference is smaller now.. for a few months.
but once verizon uses LTE to control your data...to charge for more access (that is free now)...
and data tier pricing...
you will see that difference grow...and grow...
I haven't seen as many commercials lately. I did notice today though that the EVO is not available online from Sprint's website. It's still there, but says it's sold out.
My wife is losing her company iPhone and needs a new phone. She wants an iPhone, but the plan difference is sickening. I get a 25% discount on monthly service at Sprint through my employer. We can both get on a plan with Sprint, including the two $10 premium data charges for about the same price as a single comparable iPhone plan on Verizon. 2-for-1 is hardly a contest.
I just saw a couple Evo commercials in the New York City area. One on local TV and one on a national cable network.
I think Sprint is still pushing the phone, but they're offering $125 in credits for new accounts, so that to me says "we're reducing new stock to prep for new products to come."

This assumes you get a new phone every time your contract is up. I realize in a forum such as this, most people probably do upgrade, but many in the "outside" world don't.
Watch Fringe on Friday night (FOX) if you're looking for Evo commercials. One of the main characters, Peter Bishop, is an Evo user and his phone makes regular appearances. Product placement is usually tacky but in this case, I don't mind.
You should be watching Fringe anyway. It's a great show.

$350 w/contract with a mail in rebate. So Samsung's not only raised the retail prices they've raised the wholesale prices too. The battery should last about an hour and a half with Wi-Max.

Isn't it pretty typical for most carrier's new high end phones to say something around $350 or $300 and have an instant (supposed MIR) rebates bringing them to $200 or $250?
However I would think the AT&T version would show up first, as it went through FCC already. They probably held on to releasing it because of the Infuse, and didn't want the two devices to compete.
I guess it depends on the rebate. The yet-to-be launched EVO 3D on Sprint is $199 without the need for a rebate. So it seems the SGS2 will be Sprint's new flagship.

Is the Photon being delayed? How does that affect the SGS2?
A dev just found all the AT&T LTE settings in KG1. Their LTE network will be up in few weeks and they have no phone for it. I'm guessing because of AT&T's financial value to Samsung (vs. Sprint) no one will launch the SGS2 before AT&T. Sprint's got plenty of 4G phones and AT&T's got none (not counting fake-4G). There's typically a period of exclusivity ranging from 30-90 days which means other carriers would follow in the Fall. But someone else posted Samsung's going for a simultaneous launch on all three carriers (T-Mobile's screwed). Just some stuff to think about...

But does that mean the SGS2 will be out in July or in August for AT&T? I am so sick and tired of this lame iPhone.
AT&T announced they're launching their LTE network in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Atlanta and Chicago, this Summer. The phone's already passed through the FCC and now there's LTE code in the latest firmware. Knowing Samsung wants the phone deployed fast in the U.S. I'd be surprised if it was longer than 60 days from now. I'd bet we'll start hearing rumors and seeing sightings soon as AT&T is already testing their LTE network in Texas. All of this is still just a guess.
WDM I wonder if your source confused the Samsung Conquer 4G, that is being released on 7/24 with the Within. FWIW the Photon 4G isn't being delayed, it just passed through the FCC and will be out in a few weeks.

The article's from June 13th. If the launch were 8 days away there would be more leaks about marketing materials and internal sales tools. It's probably not far off though.
The other day my friends OG Evo broke (charging port), And she took it sprint, They did a 90$ buy back plan for her Evo and she paid 5$ more and was able to purchase a Epic Touch 4g at upgrade price 199$ her upgrade isnt due till june, I thought she just got lucky but 2 days ago i took my phone in to get fixed because i had a blown speaker and they offered me the same deal, my upgrade isnt due till October 1st, i declined it, i love my OG Evo until something worth upgrading comes out. So im guesing if you had your evo near launch day you can probably get the same deal unless its just my local sprint store doing that offer. Let me know if anyone else gets this offer.

When the Evo 4G LTE comes out, or the Samsung GSIII is released, I'm going to be drooling over them! I'm not eligible for an upgrade until April of 2013. If they offer me the upgrade price on those two devices prior to my upgrade, I will be dancing in the streets!

I did this back in December and upgraded to the 3D. And op is right this is exclusively for the og Evo. I called *2, explained to the rep that I wanted to stay with sprint another two years if I could upgrade to the EVO 4G LTE that is to be released for pre-order day after tomorrow. She said no.
She was eager to try options though and put me on hold. Her supervisor came back (without me asking for her). I said, "I will gladly pay any pro-rated fees to move my contract up to an early date. She told me there was nothing she could do to move my contract dates.
THEN
I said, "Why can't I pay the pro-rated penalty for canceling my contract at this point into it (20 months in) and.."
"Sir before we consider cancelling your service, let me transfer you to the department that can move your date up for you!"
And had no problems after that.
I would suspect Sprint would be willing to do anything to keep customers, as they have spent so much money on building a fallen 4G network and building a new 4G network, and after buying all them iPhones. lol
So, I will be a happy EVO 4G LTE pre-order customer come Monday!

EVO was great to me and, even better to me when I rooted but...I still can't get great battery life with any techniques mentioned all over the forums. The LTEVO does look like a monster and, I'm happy to see a true successor to the OG EVO but I need GREAT not good battery life. Congrats on your upgrade I get mine in 17 days

If you have no plans to leave a particular carrier, I'd rather sign the contracts and not pay more money for the phones. I've had Sprint almost 5 years, my wife for 10. Why pay more?

$150? The cheapest you'll find this phone is at like $600 unless you wait for a few months to get it at $500 after some digging through ebay or craigslist

I don't get it, if you're going to stay on the same carrier anyways, why not upgrade? If you end up wanting to terminate your contract you'd still end up paying less in total through an upgrade than without one anyways.
Alaman nailed it. Other arguments are ridiculous and futile lol

Sprint will let anyone buy out there contract if the area you live in is approved for buy out. It sounds weird but they actually have maps of areas where customers can and can't buy out by region.

just curious, is there a specific dept. you have to ask for?
"Let's pay $15 billion for the iphone but be hard pressed to find $2 billion to upgrade and $10 billion to outbuy tmobile"
When is network vision going to bare fruit? All I've seen is a massive drawdown in speeds and sprints stock nosediving due to an $800 million deficit. But yet they can give 15 billion to apple for theiphone...I wonder how much rodgers and us cellular paid to have the iphone on their regional networks?
I hope they atleast leave lte unlimited and eventuallly catch up to verizons lte coverage

Their hope is that the $15 Billion spent on buying the iPhone itself will lead to more customers especially since they are the only unlimited carrier. It seems to be working and while they are still losing money, they will gain money at the end of these people's contracts most likely.
EDIT: And hopefully that will fund LTE expansion and everything else they need. T-Mobile is the number four carrier partially because it does not have the iPhone and since the EVO, Sprint has had more blockbuster phones than T-Mobile.

Funny to the fact that their whole lets spend 15 Billion for the iPhone was kind of stupid seeing how their most bought phone still is the S2 or aka Epic Touch

I doubt that. Sprint had sold 1.8 Million iPhones in February, so probably even more now, and I doubt they've sold 2 Million Epic Touches.

ive asked several reps around me those that are smart and knowledgeable unlike others and they have told me all, that the Epic Touch is still the most sold device the iPhone is up their simply "because its iPhone i want one i want one" type of people.
What's extra stupid is them releasing LTE in markets first that already have WiMax instead of getting it out in places with no 4G at all. I live in the biggest city in the state, granted it's no Chicago or NY but there's close to a million people in the metro area. Big blue and red have LTE here, even US Cellular does now. No idea if TMobile does as I don't know a single person who uses them. All my contracts are up in Sept. If they don't at least hint of LTE coming in the next year by then it'll will be real tempting to take my 10 years of business elsewhere even if it is a bit cheaper.

It really doesn't matter what type of people they are. There's only one type of person to a business and that's a paying person. The people who buy an iphone every year are exactly the people sprint wants.

oh i couldn't agree more because it's money coming in i was stating to the fact that they'll get money from them because of the types of people who are like that, but its still funny that S2 still has sold more units daily rather than the iPhone

Look at that article on engadget... it was a bad move to buy the iPhones they're not making enough to balance out the cost. CEO took a hit for that one.

If sprint does get some exclusive iphone hardware out of the 15b and that leads to massive customer increases it would be worth it.
Like what if sprint is the only one to get a 4.5inch screen iphone?
They were late to the game with the 4S and Iphone's period. But if the Iphone 5 is released at the same time as the other carriers, it will be playing on an even playing field but the only one with unlimited data.
It's gonna be a sad day when sprint switches to tiered. But then again, if you are already a customer, you should be grandfathered in.

The Network Vision is rolling out on time, in some areas faster.
I think we get a "I Hate", or "Sprint is Stupid" thread about once a month. I know these facts have been covered before, but never the less. Not to necessarily point at this OP, but you'd think some of our users would think of a better title by now. We need a "Just Venting because my 3G is slow" thread and sticky it.
P.S. Check out the site in my Signature. Not only will it answer your questions, but there is a interview with Dan Hesse there where he personally answers questions like above. He also explains why there are going the path that they are. Fun reading...
