[Q] Should i change my ROM? - GT540 Optimus General

Im using PCF V5 with Zeices Kernal, so far been the best ROM that i have tried, no complains, just one, i cant get more than 97 % of battery, just stays at 97%, i already did battery calibration and removed the battery stat from recovery but still the same, not an issue since batter last a full day with constant use, i set my CPU to 245/787 MHz using smartassV2 Governor, i get 1282 on quadrant. i been seeing post about SwiftDroid SDSL vPre-Final being better than PCF v5, is this true? should i change? or what other ROM would you recommend?

to me yes sdsl is better the graphics has a huge boost (a big plus if u game alot)

My phone steadily overclocks at 710 only while on the charger, however when off the charger it tends to freeze up and crash (especially when the screen is off). I only ever overclock that high while playing RT2 or another high intensity 3D game. I think that we need to make an overvolt kernel to better overclock but making kernels is way over my capabilities.
I am stable at 652 on battery on any rom/kernel. My phome gets extremely warm all the time (even when 480 max), but I think that has something to do with my crappy battery and always running the phone at 100% brightness.
@mejorguille, what rom or kernel are you using.. CM 5.0.8-DS Can Online Do 576. I wanna try 652 if its good on my G1.

either try the universal overclock update.zip (breaks my wifi...), or take the boot.img from the chromatic rom and flash.
Some help
Hey guys,
I've rooted my G1 with no problems overclocking for bout a year plus till NOW!
The problem was my clockspeed is capped at 528 no matter how i use it? how do i get off the restrictions for the 528 mark? i'm using set cpu!
Regards!
For those of you overclocking like crazy. You are not doing anything but making your phone freeze up and get hot!!!!! Your cpu can not handle that. And will not be going any faster than maybe in your mind!!!!!!

Best battery life kernel on sense rom?

Hey guys, in your opinion what gives the best battery life on a sense ROM like Mikshift? BC's 1.5GHz, 1.8GHZ or X99, Scary Kernel, ect. Just curious what some of your experiences are..

I have been running mikshift since the beta along with bcnice20 oc uv 1.5 kernel with amazing battery life, if I forget my charger I don't even worry the standby time of that set up is just amazing ran for 24 hours on wifi with about 5 hours of using the net, tapatalk and about 75 texts and was at 50% at 24 hours of being unplugged its the only setup ill run, sometimes ill throw the 1.8 on there just to show everyone I can go that high but its never needed. I run at 1516 max 368 min conservative with a screen off profile for 806 max and 368 min no complaints here at all!! Its actually the only setup I'm willing to run!

Go with the x99 kernel without changing any settings. Just flash and leave it alone. Easy 2 days like that

What Kernel are you guys using on the lastest CM7?

How many .35 kernels are available? I'm only aware of Umaro's and the stock CM kernel. I'm trying to achieve better battery life, so what kernel are you guys using?
So far, using Umaro's, I'm getting regular battery life, nothing special. Haven't tried the stock CM kernel.
Are they any other undervolted kernels available?

There aren't any others so far. Umaro's kernel is really good for battery life, however it's not up to date with the latest kanged nightly from yesterday.
Ahh, I see. Thanks for the info.
What cpu settings are you running?

Right now I'm using a kanged nightly with the "stock" cpu settings of 245MHz min and 1024MHz max, but with the interactive governor. With Umaro's kernel I had at 245 min, 1017 max and the Smartass governor. The smartass is pretty good on battery.
u made all the right moves all i would do is dim screen and keep runnimg apps low.
pimped out g2
btw pyromod 2.0 345 ghz min 1405ghz max on smartass. i fully charge bout 1 a day
pimped out g2
Pershoot released his kernel the other day pretty nice and smooth

Alright I'm sleepy so this will be in rambling form but...
I've tried Umaro's and I'm not sure if it was the undervolting (which I haven't looked into tweaking) but my phone kept stuttering no matter which governor I used. I was using Htcclay's Super CM7 1.8 with cpu set to 245/1113
I also used the stock kernel that's been on CM7 with no problems and average to good battery life (10-15 hours of active use: texting, browsing, few calls, and playing the occasional game)
Most recently I've used Pershoots which I had heard worked great. I myself love it. Almost same battery life as stock kernel but everything felt just a little bit smoother performance wise.
Here's a link to Pershoot's thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=847672
The stock cm kernel in my opinion is finally good enough that it doesn't need changed. I have always flashed pershoots and occassionally others, but it truly does not need supplemented IMHO.

You're running that on Vision? I can't seem to find it for our device.
Stock CM7 kernel here. I run 245/806 Interactive with automatic brightness. I've found that when wifi is on, keeping the cell radio @ 2G only works wonders. Wifi is set to sleep on screen off, but not when plugged in. 1 day 7 hours on this charge so far with 23% left. I would consider my use light to moderate.

I'm wondering where can I download the Umaro's kernel. I check out his github (https://github.com/umaro/htc-kernel-msm7x30) only to find out that the source is available.

Savage Zen/Tiamat kernel

On CM7 I dont have ondemand governor with the tiamat or savage. Only with stock CM7 kernel. What should I use instead?
Also does it take a while to notice improve me with these kernels?
Also those with awesome battery life on stock battery are you leaving wifi on? I get about half those times but I leave 3g on all the time.
I wish I could get through an 8 hour work day with 5hrs of screen on time on my battery.
Usually on my yoobao 3000mah I get 4.5hrs on screen time with no charging throughout the day lasts about 17hrs that way.
If I switch back to my stock battery I wouldnt be getting that would I?
CM7.1 nightly
yoobao 3000mah battery
tiamat 407 kernel. Everything under volted by 50mV but I do not think it is sticking.

i prefer the SavagedZen 2.2.1 kernel with savagedzen. but would suggest trying the smartass and interactiveX governors to see which one you and your phone prefer. some folks like the 3.06 version of Tiamat, you may want to ask folks in the tiamat thread about the diff between 4.07 and 3.06 (not positive on the version numbers).
i'd suggest running each for a couple days to see how it feels.
i use Tasker to activate my wifi when i arrive at work and at home...the rest of the time my wifi is off unless i turn it on.
the "5hrs of screen on time" may be an issue, the screen draws a lot of juice. perhaps if you verify your undervolting is sticking, used no widgets, do not use live wallpapers, set everything to sync once or twice a day you'd get further...but thats kinda no fun and i still don't think you'd get 5hrs.
i've had a light day on my phone...1.5hrs of screen on and i'm at 16hrs w/ 44% left. standard battery.
How can I verify the UV settings?
smartass is laggy
You guys should d/l System tuner. You can change your Governor with that app
Some guys swear by the SavagedZen kernel but it's reached the end of it's development life, the SavagedZen team is no longer supporting or updating the kernel and it hasn't been updated in almost 3 months. My personal experience with the kernel notwithstanding, I think that's reason enough to stick with Tiamat.
Turn brightness to 30 or 40%. Get a mugen 4500 mAh. Problem solved...your welcome.
Oh and there is ondemand in sz221. I am currently using tiamat 407 SBC conservative governor and my settings. No undervolt and working very nicely
I own a stock, gailio 2000mah, and siedio 3500. My 3500 never has a problem making a heavy day of use. I'm guessing that 4500 def wouldnt

you can use vipermod to set and verify your uv settings. there are other apps as well. but i find the script works well.
in CM7 you can set your governor and clock speed via:
menu -> settings -> Cyanogen Settings -> Performance -> CPU Settings
no 3rd party app is required. (unless you wish to use "profiles" like those available with SetCPU)
you may find interactiveX to be more responsive.
yes, SZ is not currently being developed and tiamat just released v407.
i may try the new tiamat kernel to see if it plays nice with my phone.
note: the new tiamat is based on 2.6.38.8 and SZ is based on 2.5.38.7.
thus far my EVO has shown a definite preference for SZ over Tiamat. /shrug
i always feel like i'm carrying around a pregnant EVO when i put on the 3500mh battery. LoL
My Evo also never ran tiamat well after 337 but 407 is running great
I avg five hours display on time. I have Deck's AOSP ROM and I turn off background data and sync twitter and email manually. I use Gemini App Manager to prevent apps from auto starting. I'm using a S-Z CFS kernel interactive x governor with SBC. I rely on 3g during my commute and wifi while at work and at home. I use the web, youtube and the xda app extensively. I don't think it is possible to have five hours screen on time using 3g only. Sprint's network is not that strong.

[Q] setcpu and evo battery life

hi
i have a htc evo 4g running android 2.3.5 and kernel 2.6.35.10-g4b48446 [email protected] #1 and i have a few questions on setcpu. its a stock rom and it is rooted.
I shut off my profiles and disabled the perflock - it said success. So i ran the long bench test and only got 2078 ms, not 5000. so i dont know if its really working. I reengaged the profiles and i think it works with the screen off. the rest of the time i am not so sure. in fact it seems to still drain fairly rapidly unless i turn on some battery saver or something. I have the following settings on my profile all are set to ondemand except charging which is set to performance. the only other setting i can choose is user
in call 998 max and 245 min priority 91
screen off 384 max and 245 min priority 88
charging any 998 max and 245 min priority 85
battery <25% 460 max 245 min priority 81
bbattery <50% 883 max 245 min priority 65
Temp> 42 C 614 max 245 min priority 50
what am i doing wrong? I have it enabled and i have notifications off
i have system panel to try and monitor but its not recording and it also drains the battery like crazy so i think thats set wrong as well but i dont know why.
i also tried juice defender but it doesnt work right because it says the AOSP file isnt found in the system/app folder. I looked there and also in teh data/app folder and its not there. So i dont know what to do about that.
thanks
stock sense is just not all that efficient really. (well thats my opinion) profiles seem to look ok but also finding a different kernel with different governors (smartass v2 is rather efficient and changing around the frequencies as needed)
auto sync settings as well? turning some stuff of that you dont use or look at and so on can help too
and calibrating battery a bit can help aka a full discharge a full charge and full discharge will sure help (also what i have found personally)
kernels
thanks for the reply. You mentioned different kernels. I understand about rooting my phone but not so much about how to load a different kernel or different rom. Where do i go to learn about that?

look around in the development section as there are some great kernels available right now...Ca1ne just released a new version of the underworld SBC v6 that i personally like with great battery life ...Mason kernels are also great with great battery...just make sure u read the threads completely to make sure u are using the right kernel for the rom u are using...ie there are kernels for ics...sense....and so on......also the kernels load through recovery...just load kernel to sd and wipe cashe and dalvik and flash zip...hope this helps...Carp
Hi another question about kernels. I am a bit of a newbie other than rooting my phone so i want to understand what advantages/disadvantages different kernels have. You mentioned smartassv2. i have seen others like
chopsuey kernal
freedom kernel
golden monkey kernel
savaged-zen kernel
tiamat kernel
all of these i think support sense roms.
as i understand it , you have to go into the recovery screen and load hte zip file off the sd card and reboot with the new kernel. What are the risks/rewards of doing so? I guess i am trying to understand which one would suit me best.
i have the current sprint lovers rom i guess since it is factory stock so should i also be considering changing the rom? Maybe i am getting ahead of myself here.
thank you again.
which rom are u wanting to run....this will help us steer u in the right direction
im sorry your entire post didnt load on my end i see ur running sprint stock....that is a fine rom but i have not ran it myself....
---------- Post added at 01:53 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:36 AM ----------
i personally have switched to sbc kernels when they came out with a sense version...i am addicted to sense 3.5...just my personal likings...sbc is superior battery charging whichcarp will give u better full charge on your battery so when the light turns green and u unplug it it wont drop down to like 90% battery in just a few mins....i can squeeze another couple hours out of my battery with sbc and even more depending on light usage....but u will stil need to play around with different cpu speeds like 786..921 and so on to see what your individual evo can stand....what works for 1 may or will not work for another....lags and bootloops etc...
You don't need to change Roms, you can if you want, but changing kernels will unleash new features. Some features are:
Full hdmi mirroring
The ability to over/under clock CPU
2 way call recording
Improve battery charging
Enable swap space
Improved performance of phone
Some kernels allow under volting CPU to further save battery (this can cause some stability issues so start slow with undervolting)
You may want to take a look at Lionfish kernel also, just note first boot may take a while.
Also ditch the profiles in set CPU, I tried profiles and it never seemed to work right. A good governor will handle all your profile settings.
I like smartass, and intellidemand the most on my set up.
As an idea ok the battery life I am getting, I streamed Pandora over 3g for about 8 hours not much other phone use, screen off most of the time, and my phone was at like 20 %. I thought that was pretty good.

thanks detcup4evr for helping out explaining that better...i blew out my back and between no sleep and pain meds the brain just dont want to fire...thanks for stepping in bro....carp
smartassV2 vs InteractiveX ... which one giver better performance AND battery life??? currently I am running LIONFISH 1.8 with interactive X
Using profiles in setcpu actually uses more battery life. Because it has to be running all the time and monitoring phone state to know when to change to a different profile.
interactiveX vs smartassv2 all depends on how you use the phone and really which kernel it is. I've noticed little things like on mason's I got better battery with smartassv2 but on other kernels I get better battery with interactiveX. As far as performance, you won't realize a difference.
ok so it sounds like i should try the sbc sense 3.5 kernel with the smartassv2 governor. Did i get that right? i will look around to see where i can download that.
Were you refering to this kernel?
Underworld Sense Kernel v0.6
yes this is the kernel i run with ODJDub HD Bliss!! Sense 3.5...if u choose to run this rom it will give u alot of different options of kernels and apps and other things from the installer....if i can help u more just feel glad to hit me up....carp
Ok so with lionfish 1.8 kernel and interactivex, I should not use a profile? What does CPU go to on screen off? also where does it mention profiles use battery? I'd like to read more into this..
Thanks

Sense rom with Underworld v 0.6
At Carp -
thank you for the advice. I was thinking maybe i would use my ROM still (its a sense i believe) and load the underworld v0.6 kernel with sbc and see how that goes. I havent done very much research on ROMs so i dont know that i want to get that deep into this just yet. It seems like underworld has alot of nice features. One thing that i am wonderig though is with the new kernel would have any further ability to unload some of the sprint bloatware or do i need a new rom to do that or is there another way to do it? Things like qik video , gmail, accuweather blockbuster etc all load themselves periodically. I kill them but then they come back like weeds. Even programs i do like , like pandora, wheres my droid etc come back also. But i dont want them to.
no u will be fine getting rid of apps and bloatware u dont wont...u wont need a special rom....i use a free app in the market called root uninstaller to get rid of useless bloatware, apps etc...then u can go in and manually uninstall what u don't want...be careful not to uninstall anything which the phone needs to boot and operate such as android system...you will see the things u are looking for when u load the app...hope this helps...carp
I actually did something unusual.
I have universal aggressive lionfish SBC 1.8, swagged out stock N, and smartassv2
I set the ideal, sleep, and wake freq for smartass v2 to 128, while setting the up rate to 245. I used set cpu to lower the min freq for my device to 128. I set max load to 100, and min load to 85, and down time to 0. I then set a profile for "ondemand" during screen off, of 128-384.
I actually have pretty awesome battery life (I'm an uber heavy user).
Sometimes it reads that I spend over 70% of my time at 128mhz.
I feel no lag. It clocks to 998mhz maybe 15% of the time, mainly when loading web pages.
flashed underworld v 0.6
Hi Carp,
well, i flashed the underworld v 0.6. So i see in set cpu that i can underclock to 128 and overclock to 1228. however, i slid the slider over to 1228 by accident and it froze the phone even though it says its still at 998 mhz. then it rebooted by itself. so i guess that wasnt a good idea. Anyway, theres a ton of governor choices now in the profiles section. i am not familiar with alot of them but i was wondering which of those would provide the most benefit. they are as follows -
ondemandx
interactive x
intellidemand
smartass
interactive
conservative
smartass 2v2
performance
along with ondemand and user space from before.
thanks
Good to hear....u will need to try different settings as each evo will be a little different...ie.. some can take alot of overclock and as u said when u went to high it locked up......my evo likes min 245 and i dont go very little over 998...mine does not like high overclock....i run between 768 and 998 or until i can see a lag or slow down in performance..depends on which rom i am running...i like ondemand x and smartass 2 on my evo but there is a good read in papa smurph's smurphed out v6.6 thread in development on governors and such...go to post #2....i wish there was a perfect setting i could give u but u will have to see what your evo can take...part of the fun of android.....carp
Governors
Thanks carp. I guess experimentation is the only way to know. i charged my phone last night ad i noticed that it does take alot longer to go from 100% charge to 90% but i also noticed that the phone temp was at like 110 deg F and a voltage around 4.263 or so. i have read some thread where they claim its bad for the Lithium ion batt to be over 4.2 V but as soon as i unplug it it drops to 4.1 something usually. I am using battery indicator app to measure it. i am using the underworld w/sbc kernal currently but the voltage being higher has me a bit concerned that i am damaging the battery kind of like pumping water into a jar with the the lid on tight til it bursts. Or in the batteries case - too hot i guess or until it plates.
