[Q] Missing Notification Bar - Droid X General

Hey all. I have a Droid X that has been running with Launcher Pro Plus for the past few months.
I rooted my phone the other day and everything was going fine. I downloaded Titanium Backup, ShootMe, and then Metamorph.
I've been checking out droidpirate.com and downloaded a few different notification bar color schemes, which were working fine. Today I downloaded another and decided I wanted to change it, so I switched to a new one through Metamorph, applied it, and rebooted my phone. Upon restart it was still the same color as before, so I applied again and before I could restart it gave me an error message that the status/notification bar (not sure which it said at the time) had crashed.
I restarted it, and ever since then I've had no notification bar. I've tried reapplying the color schemes in Metamorph and restarting after, but nothing has changed.
I've gone to the Launcher Pro settings and toggled on and off the "hide notification bar" setting which hasn't changed anything. I've restored my backup in Titanium Backup and it is still the same. I'm not sure what else to do at this point.
What do you all suggest? It really sucks to not see my battery meter, time, etc. when I open my phone. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I don't know if this is best practice, but I would just re-sbf / reinstall rom.

Does that mean flashing the Droid X rom? I am new to all of this, so I'm sorry if these are stupid questions. And what guide would you recommend for going about doing this? Thanks!

Download RSD Lite and flash an SBF. There's a sticky telling you how to do this I'll subscribe to this thread in case you have any questions.

Great, thanks for the info! I'll give this a try tomorrow.

Wait!
Before you do that...
(Which is good advice, and would be my second choice...but you'll be without all of your applications and settings. This will put you on complete stock!)
http://www.chadhaney.com/droidXDefault/4.5.602/
Download the file that this theme was changing.
(system/framework/framework-res.apk I think?)
Download "Root Explorer" from the market...or a free alternative if you can get one to work.
I think "ES file explorer" works, but I've never tried it.
Check the "permissions" on the file you'll be replacing...and change the new file to have the same permissions (prior to moving, just to be safe).
Move and replace the new file into place.
If your phone didn't reboot during that process...
Double check the permissions again...
And reboot.

I knew it was only a matter of time, and that's a good resolve. Thanks for the alternative!

I'm not seeing that file on the website you mentioned. If I ctrl+f framework, all I see is a GoogleServicesFramework.apk file. Would it perhaps be the StatusWidget.apk from that list that I am looking for?

Status widget doesn't sound right, but I have never had to recover my notifications bar before.

Sorry man, at work...and can't check...but this should have it.
Or if you've purchased Rom Toolbox or Rom Manager...they have some .zips you can download via your phone and extract with your PC.

Ahh this is all confusing me. I can't find the framework-res.apk on that site either. Would it work to just hard reset my phone then download an app restore app? Then re-root it and restore everything to how it used to be with Titanium?

The framework-res.apk was an attempt to fix your phone without wiping your apps and all that fun stuff. A hard reset wouldn't fix the problem because the file, in theory, is still corrupted or not working. I would sbf your phone. It looks creepy but it's just resetting back to stock.

Go down to SBF: What is it, and what does it do?!?
If the files are offline because of the SOPAA thing, let me know.

Alright, looks like that's what I'm gonna try. Thanks to both of you for all the help, it is greatly appreciated . Before I go through with it I was just wondering, if I backup all my apps to my SD card with "App Backup and Restore" then reinstall the app after the backup, I'm guessing it should be able to reinstall my apps from the SD afterwards? (I wouldn't use Titanium to restore because I'm assuming that would restore my phone with the flawed system data I have now)

The apps themselves wont be flawed. The phone runs off a whole bunch of apk's. Just the apk that controls the notification bar was messed up. You should be fine with backing up your apps regardless of method. Use what program you're comfortable with.

Agreed...
But to reiterate...
Titanium won't bork you in any way.
Simply use the option>batch>restore USER apps option and you'll be %100 back to where you were...aside from having to change your settings back to where you had them...
Also...
Facebook and any "Overclocking" applications seem to behave badly when restored.
Not in a negative way...
But I always uninstall them after a restore and install manually through the market...
Facebook won't receive push notifications if you don't.
And Overclock apps simply may not work.
Everything else (game data...whatever) will be exactly as you had it.
Check my sig if you need...
And use the sections about backing up and restoring your data.
Ignore the actual rom flashing part...as it's irrelevant in your situation.
There is also another SBF link in there if the one Fluffy posted is dead.

So I downloaded the latest RSD lite with no problems, but whenever I try to download the "Droid X 4.5.602 SBF Gingerbread 2.3.3" file, it leads me to http://www.multiupload.com/57SX6Q5HJI which lists the file as 602.sbf.zip but downloads as a program called "iLivid", which is a video downloading program.
Any suggestions?

Different Mirror?

Figures, thanks a bunch. I tried the download links from two different forums and both led to that same program download, but it looks like I've got the right one downloading now. Thanks again for all the help, I'm going to try the whole restoration process this weekend when I have more time. I'll let you know how it goes.

Help! My Locations app has disappeared!

Hi guys,
I just recently bought a HTC Desire HD and have been enjoying it very much.... I have rooted and S-off, but have yet to install recovery clockwork ....
That aside, yesterday I started moving some stock app files to a folder on the sd card (so I can remove it from my phone, plus back it up just in case) with root explorer (r/w mounted), I didn't move the HtcLocationService.apk. All went ok...
But just this morning I noticed my locations icon on my phone's interface has turned into the green android image...meaning the program is gone! It cannot be found in my programs at all.
I have tried to do the "reinstall locations" in the settings, but it says "unable to find an activity to handle this action", and I've tried to go straight to the HtcLocationService.apk to install it (not even sure if it is the right application) and it says "application not installed".
I am really stumped, and would like Locations back on my DHD!!
Any help will be appreciated!
Thanks in advance
What stock apps did you uninstall? Some apps are bound to eachother. Locations is probably bound to navigation or footprints or maybe another app. So if you uninstalled that, that could be the cause.
If it's really gone, then probably the only way to reinstall it is installing the stock ROM again (or a custom one). You probably can't install it again because locations needs some other stock app (if my hypothesis are right).
I took out stuff like friendstream, Plurk, Twitter, FieldTest, Flickr, HTC_IME, EasyCard, Laputa, KKBOX, plus phone provider apps (since I'm with TaiwanMobile, myfone) so TWM_City/Market/Movie/Music etc....
I've since moved the files back into system>apps, but it hasn't changed anything....is there any possibility I could get Locations back???
I can't think of an idea to reinstall Locations that easy. You can just install the official ROM again. You don't even have to be rooted then.
Have a look at this thread. If you deleted .apk files of the 2 lowest lists, then you could try to reinstall them first. Otherwise I don't know. maybe someone else.
I would have reinstalled the official ROM again. Just to make sure everything works correctly again. (and then start over removing apps :') ).
But maybe someone else knows a better solution
Thanks for you quick reply!
Can you point me to a thread that would explain the process of installing an official rom (where i would download the rom, etc)? Plus is there a way I can back up all my games, apps and settings, so I don't have to reinstall every app and game again?
would a Factory reset help? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm hoping I get this resolved
First of all: I found this thead for installing system .apk's. Maybe that can help. But it seems pretty comlicated .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695701
A factory reset should restore everything, (ofcourse I was tthinking to complicated :') ).
All apps you installed from the market will be reinstalled if you login with you google account again. It can take a while. It also remembers wich apps you bought. It won't however save any data (like saves for games).
For other apps (and all apps if you want to backup the data), you could download titanium backup (also available in the market). Keep in mind though that for restoring any backups made with this app, you need root acces again.
The facotry reset will remove your personal data. Only your sdcard and simcard will keep their info.
I hope all is clear what I told . So no ROM download needed. :')
Let us know if it has worked
Hey again,
I just factory reset my phone, using settings. Locations has not been restored , also some gadgets was not working (may be the widgets I have removed before). The front page weather animation is gone! Only the time left...(how would I get that back?)
Any other suggestions will be appreciated!
go to locations in settings... u will find a tab "reinstall locaton" make sure u r on wifi...and it will install it back...it happnd with me and got it back instantly

[Q] Please help.

I'm a complete noob when it comes to ROMs / Apps / Themes, basically smart phones in general. Just got a Droid X for Christmas.
Thinking of using a ROM like Gummyjar2.5 or Rubix(don't know best version) because they seem to be very popular here. Anyone have any links for tutorials on installing either / both? And opinions to which would be better for a total noob? I want my phone to run faster / use less battery but still look pretty flashy.
As for themes, does anyone know where I can go to check out themes for the said two ROMs?
Thanks in advance for the help.
Roms are a mattet of how each person likes the feel of it for themselves. Right now, gummyjar 2.5, rubix 1.9.5, and liberty 1.0 are the usual choices. If you still want blur elements like you have it right now, then I suggest zapX bazinga, or apex.
All the roms run very well, but like I said, try out each. You will want to root the phone using z4root (google for it vers 1.3.0)
Then you will want to download droidx bootstrap. This will allow you to backup/restore your phone. It is also used to install the *.zip themes and ROMs.
As for themes, I recommend any of Bignadad's themes. He is the most thorough as far as complete images for framework and apps as well! Make sure that the theme you pick is compatible for any ROM you choose to use.
When I get back to a computer instead of my phone I can try and help out more =)
Ps... Look at the thread for each ROM/theme to see what you like and they will almost always include install instructions!
Hope this helps! Post back if you have more questions, I'm more than happy to help!

Ok, to start with.. No worries, we all had a point where we knew nothing about this stuff!
Blur is an "interface add-on" that motorola has added to their phones. If you were to look at the Nexus One or Nexus S, these two phones both have a stock version of android without Motorola Blur or HTC Sense on them. Sense and Blur are modifications of system applications and the user interface... Some people really like these interfaces, but most people are against it in the Android forums because they are mostly wanting performance (which is usually degraded by Sense or Blur).
Most of the ROM's now strip out the blur components (yay for our devs!) and that is what GummyJar, Liberty, and Rubix do. If you want a ROM with blur components, I would suggest using Apex or ZapX Bazinga.
2. That z4root and backup thing you said to download. Do I do that with my phone and just launch them? Or?
I have attached the z4root and droid X bootstrap .apks. What you need to do is copy these to your phone's sdcard. Then go to Settings-->Applications--> Check the Unknown sources check box. While you're at it press on the development section as well. Then check the USB debugging box.
You can then install these using a File manager such as Astro (free on the market) by opening Astro File Manager, and then browsing to the .apk file on your sdcard.
To root your phone after installing z4root, launch the app from your applications list, and then click permanent root. It will take a while (potentially) and then your phone will reboot and be rooted.
After that, then go to Astro and browse for the bootstrap apk and install that. This is what allows you to backup/restore. After that app installs, you will be prompted for superuser rights, hit yes.
Then open Droid X bootstrapper. You will want to click the top option, as that hijacks the boot process. Then reboot recovery will allow you to go to the backup/restore mode.
Check out this link: droid X wiki. I have to go take care of some stuff, but will add another post with some stuff.
3. Where do I find the threads for the specific ROMs / Themes?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=687
Use this link. This is the general Droid X thread page. The general section is just mostly questions and "general" stuff for the Droid X. The themes sections has themes.. lol and the android development has the ROMs.
Just read through the different threads and post back if you have questions.
So what does rooting my phone do? I get what backup / restore is, but not that.
This z4 is taking forever. -_-
So I went to sleep while z4 did its magic and it wasn't running when I woke up. How would I know it x completed?

EDIT: Also, when I installed bootstrap, it didn't ask me the question you said it would. Now it's showing an error when I want to do "Bootstrap Recovery". Tried uninstalling and reinstalling and that didn't work.

Reboot your phone, re-run the Z4root program (phone will reboot) and after you should have a GREY Super User icon in your app drawer.
Hope this helps.
That worked, man. Thanks! So I have Bootstrap, z4 and ROM manager all ready. Now I just need to get a ROM and find one that has a slick THEME.
How do you like Liberty, Sys? I saw it was just something you put over the top of Gummyjar, which was probably the one I was going to go with if Bignadad (by the way, I don't know where to find his themes. =/) had a cool theme for it. Have you tried Rubix?
EDIT: I love Swype. Are these ROMs going to take it away from me? =P
I think many will agree that Liberty 1.0 seems to be the sweetest right about now..... try it out.
Got Liberty up successfully, but don't know how to retrieve my contacts.
hey i have one question, when z4 is done and you run bootstrap, the phone is empty of apps and contacts...and you have to do a backup from somewhere correct?

So you already have loaded liberty? Just trying to make sure I have my details straight. If you followed the install instructions and wiped data and cache then yes you will need to restore apps from titanium backup or whatever means you may have backed up your apps.
If you load a ROM such as liberty, then you will not want to use bootstrap to restore. Bootstrap completely backs up your entire phone state, not just your apps. Sorry if I misinterpretted any part of your message

So I've loaded Liberty, but can't "Link" facebook contacts to their phone numbers. Is there some option I need to enable to do this? Or should I go back to vanilla? That's a convenience I don't really intend to do without.

Is facebook installed on your phone? If not install it from the market and the initial setup should ask you if you want to set up facebook sync.
If facebook is installed to go phone settings->accounts and sync. Your facebook account should show up there and you can setup sync options.

Yeah, I have no problem with having my Facebook contacts in my contacts list, but I used to be able to link them with their phone contact. Meaning if I had a person's phone number, I could link it with their Facebook profile so their phone number would display their facebook default pic and latest status. Now, when I try to edit facebook contacts and add a number to them, it says I can't do that with this device.

Hm... I haven't really messed around with this much, as I haven't had to add/edit contacts lately... All my contact info is backed up to my gmail account...
I will try and toy with this the next couple of days and get back to you.
If anyone else has info on this... Please chime in!
If I want to go back to vanilla to re-do it, back it up, and then come back to liberty, do I have to download the vanilla zip? Or is there any way to just revert?
Also, I need a cool theme. Reg Lib is too boring. ;]

Sorry, slightly confused by your post... But I think I may have what you mean.
If you want to go back to vanilla (original phone condition) then you will need to sbf if you didn't take a backup before installing Liberty. If you did take backup using Boostrap, then I would recommend just restoring your backup.
If you didn't create a backup before... create a backup now with liberty installed in case you need a place to come back to for reference. Nandroid backups are your friend...
I'm not quite sure what you mean by vanilla, so I may be way off here. Feel free to add in some more details please =)
Yeah I mean I want to go to the completely original phone setup. I did do a bootstrap save or whatever, but bootstrap isn't installed. If I reinstall does it still have my vanilla Droid saved?
Also, how would I go about switching back to it? Navigating those menus makes me nervous.... Haha.
I'd go into Bootstrapper -- > Reboot Recovery... then what?

Okay... So if you have taken a backup before you did your install of Liberty (or any other ROM/Theme) then yes, it should still be saved on your SDcard actually. Bootstrapper creates a folder on your sdcard called "clockworkmod". Inside of that folder, there should be two more folders: backup and download. Inside of the backup folder, you should see a folder titled in a similar manner:
2010-09-10.04.03.48 (yyyy-mm-dd-hh.mm.IDK what the rest is.. LOL)
But regardless, this is what you should see. If you re-install the bootstrap program, then when you go reboot recover--> backup and restore--> restore, you should see this folder/option. You will use the volume up and down buttons to move the cursor up and down. Pressing the camera button (red) will select the highlighted option. You can use the back arrow key or power button to go up a level in the menus.
If this doesn't work, you can always SBF the phone (this takes the phone back to the complete original condition out of the box). It is slightly scary to do the first time (at least for me it was...), but I have probably done it at least 10 times now.
Let me know if the bootstrap backup works. Take note that you will lose any apps/texts on your phone that you now have unless you use an app like titanium backup to backup your apps, and an SMS backup app to save your text messages. The bootstrap backup takes you back to the exact condition the phone was in when you took the backup.
Lemme know if this works out for you! Good luck!

is this something i screwed up by not doing the webtop uninstall correctly?
also when i run the batch is says its finished almost instantly....except it didnt do anything! and when i find it in the list the "restore" option isnt there. i KNOW i backed them up too. it says 1 backup available but wont do it.
and no roms or deodoxing(dont even know what it means)
originally when i copied all those files into the system/apps folder it gave me the correct errors and i restarted by holding the power button. just like it says.
i recopied the files thinking maybe i did something wrong, nothing happened this time. i can locate the .apk files in the app folder. and they are all not installed. when i click it and select "install", it says "application not installed'
what am i missing?
also noticed platform lib client is uninstalled and wont install...dont know if related
now ive even tried using the webtopbackup files from the undo thread and putting those into the folder, but still they wont "install"
please help!!
I'm having the exact same problem. No luck yet. I think Im going to flash back to sbf.
I'm pretty certain it has to do with deleting apps from the system partition. Anyone know how to fix this? Reinstall apps?
Honestly, you should just save yourself the headache and SBF to 1.2.6, Then update to 1.5.7 from there. If you have anything important to back up, just do that first.

I remember something like if you use SBF, flash counter goes up and your warranty is voided, is this true?
I don't recall reading anything about that. The 1.2.6 flash is the official stock build that shipped with the AT&T version of the Atrix, so in the absolute worst case scenario, say you don't know anything about it. Ignorance is bliss after all. Also, since we do have the sbf as a recovery, warranty would only be necessary if something in the hardware were to go wrong.

[Q] APKs won't sideload via adb or a file manager

So I am trying to load a couple of apks I have and it's been no go. On my Epic I usually just dropbox, open, and install. I tried that and initially got the security message. That is already taken care of via nookcolor tools. So that isn't the issue. My issue is every time I go to install I go to Astro, open the file via the "open app manager," it takes me to the info install page...I click install and it loads into the package installer, excellent...and then it just stalls and the progress bar runs and runs but never progresses. This has happened with every apk I have now tried.
Okay...so I figured I'd just go the little more involved (very little, no need to be that lazy, right) route and adb install. Well carp. All goes well, I adb install blahblah.apk and it starts rolling..."570kb blah..etc pkg /blah/temp/blah"...and just hangs there...never to give me the gratifying "success" message. Again, I have tried this with different apks that I know work and the same results. I restored to stock and rerooted, just in case. Same
I am running stock rooted (manualnooter) at this point, just got the nook day before yesterday (one of the many who jumped at the refurbs). Market apps download fine. I'm a blue dot, if that makes any diff. Likely not but meh.
I have searched and googled and not found the answers...but I know I am missing something elementally simple. My luck I'll look like an idiot and it will be a "did you check to see if you had any gas?" broken down car scenario. I'm okay with that, as long as I'm running again. I'm pretty sure I checked all the out of gas scenarios but I likely missed one or two so... any help is much appreciated. Thanks a ton...
I should know better than trying to write before coffee
Well, My answer is not a "check gas" answer. It's pretty dang weird.
1. Download ES Explorer from the market.
2. Start ES Explorer, hit Menu>Settings. Goto Root Options (NEW) and tick both check boxes. Hit allow when it asks you to.
3. Go back twice, until you see your sd card contents. Find the APK on there and select and hold. Hit copy and then hit the 1st button on the row of buttons (it's an icon of an sd card OR a Home icon) If you see a data folder, go in to it. If not, hit the 1st button again.
3. Once in the data folder, go into the app folder. Pull up the little white tab on the bottom. Tap the APK you wanted to install. It will copy. Once you see the APK's icon in the folder, hit the home button and restart. That should have installed it but it is a slow method. Note that you can Multi-Select APK's by pressing the Multi-select button and pasting them all in the /data/app/ folder.
are you sure you have side loading checked
Settings > applications should be the top box.

ikingblack, thank you, thank you!
Not sure why but by doing this it somehow unsnafued the package installer as well (fingers crossed). I went through your instructions with a known good apk that would not install for anything before. And there it was after the copy, paste reboot etc. Not too much to ask for...still was confused as to the why of the normal package installer method not working. So I decided to give it (package inst) a go with another known working apk (I had just tested it on my epic) that previously wouldn't install, repeatedly, and now it installed just like it should. Scratching my head in wonder. It shouldn't be the reboot, as I have do so many times...the only difference is the install instructions and adding ES (I'm leaving astro behind I think). All I know is it is working and I am a happy camper (tent is in the back yard...) Thanks again! cheers!
Sure. Also, you can select all the APK's using the 2-file icon at the top and tapping the APKs, then press-and hold on one of the APk's and then go to data app, and keep tapping the APK's you wanna copy. And then reboot. Enjoy your Nook!
Thanks for this, it fixed it, but I don't know why.
I suffered this issue on my dell streak.
It was working fine a couple of days ago when I installed GetJar.
Suddenly today for no reason I can determine:
All APK's I tried the install button in the package installer was not grayed out, but it would not respond when pressed.
I've just been setting up my streak again and installing a lot of software. I'm guessing something must of gone wrong.
Someone on another post suggested JuiceDefender may have caused it but I've not installed that recently.
In my case I did:
(1) Installed esFileExplorer
(2) Copied an apk to the folder /data/app/ as described above
(3) restarted the phone
This did not install the app for me.
(4) Tried running the apk file again. Suddenly the Install button is clickable again?! The app then installed just fine.
(5) Tried a different apk (without copying to /data/app/)
Now that will install fine?!
This is really weird. I can't replicate the issue now (which is good!)
but I also can't tell which action fixed it.
As said above it may have been installing esfileexplorer and giving it root access.
It may have been the act of copying the file that reset something.
It wasn't the reboot, at lease not on its own as i'd already tried it.
Regardless, thanks for the info.
If anyone sees this issue again you might want to just try installing esfileexplorer and see if apk's will then install.
This might help us identify which bit of the process is creating the fix.
Just found another suggestion if anyone is interested:
Some suggests using the 'Fix permissions' option of Titanium Backup. I have no way to test this.

[Q] Just got My nook ST shipped to my home... :)

got my nook yesterday, registered, and ready to go...
the e-ink is really good on my eyes and i'm lovin it...
now to what i'm here for..
as everyone i want to hack my nst for a better e reading experience, a li'l browsing, a few gud themes and a few games.
i want some help in doing it. i could have gone through the forums but there being many, it really is a bit hard to choose the right one and in right order. i would like anyone of you to share the links in order of it supposed to be done, i.e. backing up my default files and then to hacking etc. a video tutorial link would be more appreciated. As i have some of my books scanned, suggest a reader to read scanned pdfs after hacking...
and of course i'm not a regular hacker, except that i have hacked my psp once so no problem getting along with the instructions...
Expecting a few gud responses, thanQ

k,thanks a lot. I rooted my nook successfully
Now to make backup of my factory files, I tried the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1142983 which guides me to backup my files. but the noogie.img link does not have any download in that thread. what really is noogie and please give me an alternate link to noogie.img.
thanks
harunaku
You need to follow the redirect link on NookDevs. The page has been moved. noogie.img is available from that page.
thanks again, i'm done with backing up too.
now, i couldn't find a way to install the first app in the nook memory. of course u can use file manager, but there's no file manager preinstalled, is there? how to get to that apk file?

Wait... are you trying to do the manual rooting process? There are automated rooters. Noogie is used to backup and root manually (if you want to).

Assuming you used the latest TouchNooter, Super Manager should work. I think SM is new from the version of TN that I last used.
Or, once Market is working, download your favorite.

my doubts dont seem to be ending any soon....
-i'm done with everything, even market's working. but i couldn't search in market. when i type in search box and enter - no response...
-i managed to find 'file manager'' in top free app list and installed it. now when i try to install the apks in micro sd card, it says 'for security,ur phone is set to block non android sourced apps',though i checked 'allow non market apps' in nook color tools. suggest me a way to install the apps in card.
-the market shows the apps with $ pricing, how to make it regional?
-sometimes while swiping to scroll, the page goes to the end all the way...
-after rooting the wifi is disconnecting frequently
thanks in advance...

That seems to be a problem some people have and others don't. What version of the B&N firmware are you running?

Sounds like you need to allow 3rd party apps. Launch NookColor Tools, then toggle the Allow Non-Market Apps settings off and back on. Then try again.

Those aren't really rooting issues.

This may be related to the B&N firmware version you're running. Apparently, the NST v1.1.0 has known problems with some 802.11n networks, WPA2 settings and various other random wifi issues. I don't believe TN touches wifi, so it shouldn't have changed.
would you say go ahead, if i say i'm gonna restore the factory settings with the backup and root again?
and yes, i rooted with the latest touchnooter (the link u posted)
