Root Access, Can't Uninstall Bloatware

So I'm rooted on my Evo and as far as I can tell I've flashed the stock rom that should allow me to uninstall the bloatware, however, I dont see any uninstall options for that crap like facebook.
Anything I'm doing wrong?
I followed this guide to root and flash. I've tested my root using the "Terminal Emulator" and typing "su" and it returned a "#"

I've installed Android Debug Bridge but I was under the impression that rooting my phone would allow me to do things on my phone, such as install and uninstall what I want.

If you want to do it in android you either need console program or a file manager. Root explorer us the best one and easiest. Looks just like a typical explorer, tap the rw/ro button for read only or read write and delete away.
You have to have completed the second part of unlocking nand. Otherwise your only option is using a computer and adb in recovery.

They dont make this easy do they? I would have figured Android to be very open for things like this, I'm starting to feel like I have to "jailbreak" again, only this time it's to remove crap.
This seems like so much work to get rid of facebook and sprint tv.

It took me 10 minutes total including the file downloads. Its a one time thing and there is a learning curve with any new platform.

Aridon, is there a free explorer you'd recommend? I dont mind buying software, just want to make sure I'm not mistaken before I buy something that is worthless to me.

You get a trial on any purchased software in android. After its installed if you go backto market and pull it up again there will be a refund option. So no risk. I think its for 24 hours.
As for a free one I'm not sure when I first started messing around with android I bought it because people said it was the best. I don't have any regrets.
Just remember to tap the top button for rw. Long press brings up options. Menu had an option for multiple file select and other goodies. its very powerful.

Aridon, thanks for everything, just 1 more question. I bought it, and the program is slick. I went to /system/app and deleted facebook, is that all I need to do?

I may have done a bad thing, my phone just reset itself.... I need a trainer to be with me at all times.

So after that restart, the files I thought I deleted are back.

Yes just go into system/app, make sure it says rw up top which means read write access, then select the file, general an .apk and .odex and delete. Not all files have both and some roms don't have any .odex files.
I'll be up for another 30 min or so and I'll keep an eye on this thread in case you have any questions.

Ok that means the second part where you unlocked nand wasn't done correctly. Make sure you go slow, download the files again because they are different and watch for errors.
The only hiccup I had was when I copied the new recovery and other files to my sd and tried to adb push it gave me some kind of can't find file error. I had to reboot and it was fine. It send after the boot I could go back in and adb the files it must have been some kind if a refresh error on the sd while in recovery.
Edit. I'm responding on my evo and in bed so excuse errors.

I know it can be a bit of a pain to do this but I promise you it will be worth it. Things have only just started and the custom roms are already awesome. Once we get the source code things are going to be insane over here.

Got it! Everything is working well. However, now my voice mail says it can not download messages.... Rebooted and it's all good.
Facebook and Twitter Free! Also, no more Sprint crap.

Another terminal substitute is Android Commander, out is naturally a file explorer that allows transfer and deletion off whatever you want. This program runs in your pc.
As Was mentioned above, root explorer is the easiest way.

So with Android - one simply deletes the application rather than un-installing it? That doesn't cause problems with the system thinking the application still exists somewhere?

It depends on where it is installed. /system/apps do not allow you to just uninstall you have to delete it. One this is done its gone. Obviously if you delete phone.apk you are going to have issues or if you delete a process that is running you may get a force close but for the most part unless you delete an app like people or dialer you are fine. After the single force close everything works properly.
Some custom roms moved programs to /data/app which allows them to be removed the other way.

Motoactv

Just curious if anyone is willing to tackle this little gagdet. It needs some fine tuning and possibly a voodoo sound app would be awesome. It lacks the loudness like most android phones.

It looks interesting, but I would not personally buy it. It does not have enough features for me to use it over my phone.

Well I purchased one and with the help of the other thread about the apk i was able to sync to my epic with all features including the calls/missed calls and acuweather. This was with the corded headset. I have no real reason to get the wireless. The only real problem that i have right now is the sound level of the player. Its very frustrating to have to use a program to up the db level in every song i put on it. It running some kind of android platform so someone has to have some ideas.

Well, it looks like someone has listened... I didn't see a thread anywhere else, so I'll post it here, some one has rooted the motoactv. the story, along with a link to a how to is available, just google it. I was gonna post a link, but I can't.

The Motoactv runs gingerbread. CWM has gained root on it and installed Google apps. It has a decent chip and ram for a small device. The bootloader isn't locked. More and more smart watches and wearable computers will be coming out. I'd like to see a custom launcher for this size screen as QCIF+ ain't exactly great for a lot of launchers. A custom rom that remapped the hardware buttons would be nice as well.

I just rooted the MotoACTV with the tutorial provided by Wade, the guy that rooted the watch. But I am having problems installing the ggole apps on it. The guide does not explain very well how to install the gogle apps. I managed to install several apk via adb commands and they work ok. But I am missing the market and every default google ape. Can someone explain how to do this? I already downloaded google apps zip file from cynogen web page.

There are libraries in the unzipped file that need to be installed with the adb push command to get maps to work. The market needs a bunch of crap to work. You should push all the apk (except car home if you don't want it) once you have those over, restart and you download the rest of the apps from market.

This sounds intriguing can you run RunKeeper on the rooted device. I have the motoactv and love it for running but RunKeeper in my opinion is the best running app. Im anxious to hear more about this.

Thanks Dragon, but one more question before I keep trying this market stuff. Do I do the adb push command to the same exact directories as the zip has. Like for example: the zip file that I downloaded was for CM7 and it includes a lot more directories than simply the app directory. Do I have to push every single directory the zip has and create the ones that are missing within the watch. Can you please explain more in detail if possible. Thanks again for the help as this is the only thing I am missing from this "the market".

I am doing this from a Mac using terminal, it has been a richard year since I have used CLI with windows but for Linux the commands will be the same ("dragon$" is just my terminal prompt).
dragon$ adb push ~/Desktop/gapps/system/app/Vending.apk /system/app
dragon$ adb push ~/Desktop/gapps/system/etc/permissions/features.xml /system/etc/permissions/
So, you see I have pushed the files to the corresponding directories that the files are found in the unzipped folders.
I cannot remember if adb push defaults to parent owner and permissions but if not you will have to change them to root/root and RW-R--R--

I followed CMW's guide to root mine, too.

A full custom would be great (but not needed for remapping hardware keys); Motorola's UI is really quite nice for the screen size, but won't show custom apps. Instead of the fake Honeycomb one, I prefer to use Zeam (with the launcher and grid set to 3x3 icons) -- I just think it works much better, without overlapping icons and so on.
To get a shortcut to the wifi access point settings in zeam, press and hold in a blank area, and go to "add", then "shortcuts", then "settings", then "settings" again. This "settings" is the hidden wifi one.
I also remapped "Start" to menu fairly easily by modifying they G2-keypad.kl file under keylayout; nosit1 was able to do the same with music to home. The people in #motoactv on freenode.net are very helpful, including CMW.
More information on that:

Change this line:

On a separate note, you'll want to backup your userdata partition, too. Otherwise, it can get corrupted and make the file loop at the motorola logo:
dd if=/dev/block/userdata of=/sdcard/userdata.img bs=1024
adb pull /sdcard/userdata.img userdata.img
Even when restoring that, there are a ton of force closes from com.motorola.gault.activity; you have to get past them to a custom launcher to factory reset.

Does anything need to be done with the META_INF folder? I'm attempting to get Market working on my Motoactv but I'm still getting a Google Services Framework force close. I pushed over the gapps from CM6 (the ones under HDPI). Not sure if those were the right ones.
I think I need to factory reset and start over from the beginning. :/

No, that folder is for recovery mode installers.
Amazon app store works perfectly if you can't get Market to work. It takes a fair amount of trial and error with apps to find ones that are functional.
I can't recommend enough installing grafitti pro. I have it from Amazon FAOTD.
I have superuser.apk installed and I had to push my preferences from /data/data/ on my phone to my watch so as to autorespond "yes" to root requests and no notifications because the UI is a fixed size window.
After doing that I installed button saviour and my purchased key for the pro features to have only home and menu onscreen. (Button saviour needs root permission).
I use golauncher ex with 3x3 home screen and the notification bar hidden. I wish I could remove the dock but oh well.
Android is going into more types of devices, I wish Google would push scalable graphics. I am however very impressed with the amount of apps that work usably on a QCIF+ screen (Netflix!)
I also like the main launcher and if I could access an app like AltDrawer from it I would not have another home replacement installed. I will tear apart Launcher2.apk soon and see if there is a way to customize it.

Okay so last night I attempted to root my motoactv but my adb for some reason say it cannot load the root.img, I had the same problem where it's couldn't load the recovery.img for my photon when attempting to apply CWM or twerp recovery. Fastboot devices definitely sees both my devices (no I didn't do them are same time, and the files needed are in the same file location as instructed) and I can even Fastboot reboot and have that work. Any ideas or suggestions?? Any help would be appreciated.

Try downloading a new root image. Also try switching USB ports.

Thanks, wasn't sure about the META-INF folder. Going to try installing button saviour. How did you "push" preferences from your phone to the watch? I have root/su on my Xperia Play so I should have the files there to push?
Did you personally get the Google Apps working?
EDIT: Everything is forceclosing on me. :/ Installed the Stock Browser from my XP but that's forceclosing as well. Attempted to change the permissions of the applications but either it didn't work or it didn't help.

I couldn't figure out how to push preferences, but I was able to tell Superuser to allow all apps after remapping Start to Menu, then just doing Superuser > Menu > preferences. You could always do this to get Superuser working, get Button Savior working, and then revert it back.

Thanks a lot. Just did a factory reset, figure I'll start from scratch. Did you get the Google Apps working after Superuser was configured? What Browser are you using? (Dolphin was forceclosing for me every time I went to type.)
EDIT: Got Superuser working, did the keyboard hack to make Start=Menu. Anybody know what button Music is mapped to in the configuration?
Going to fiddle around some more w/ Google Apps. Anybody have a walkthrough of installing the apps? IE Which ones you must do, don't have to do and what to do to get it working.
EDIT: It was WAKEkey 378. It was set to "MEDIA" so I changed it to "HOME". Works perfectly!

Hanging at the Red Moto Logo
Followed the instructions and had it working rooted, etc. Was going to change out the launcher. And obviously did something wrong. Now it just just hangs at the Red Moto logo. Can get it to power off and can still get it to the fastboot mode. Have tried reflashing the system and userdata, wiping the user data, etc. Any suggestion on what to try next?

[Q] Missing Notification Bar

Hey all. I have a Droid X that has been running with Launcher Pro Plus for the past few months.
I rooted my phone the other day and everything was going fine. I downloaded Titanium Backup, ShootMe, and then Metamorph.
I've been checking out droidpirate.com and downloaded a few different notification bar color schemes, which were working fine. Today I downloaded another and decided I wanted to change it, so I switched to a new one through Metamorph, applied it, and rebooted my phone. Upon restart it was still the same color as before, so I applied again and before I could restart it gave me an error message that the status/notification bar (not sure which it said at the time) had crashed.
I restarted it, and ever since then I've had no notification bar. I've tried reapplying the color schemes in Metamorph and restarting after, but nothing has changed.
I've gone to the Launcher Pro settings and toggled on and off the "hide notification bar" setting which hasn't changed anything. I've restored my backup in Titanium Backup and it is still the same. I'm not sure what else to do at this point.
What do you all suggest? It really sucks to not see my battery meter, time, etc. when I open my phone. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I don't know if this is best practice, but I would just re-sbf / reinstall rom.

Does that mean flashing the Droid X rom? I am new to all of this, so I'm sorry if these are stupid questions. And what guide would you recommend for going about doing this? Thanks!

Download RSD Lite and flash an SBF. There's a sticky telling you how to do this I'll subscribe to this thread in case you have any questions.

Download "Root Explorer" from the market...or a free alternative if you can get one to work.
I think "ES file explorer" works, but I've never tried it.
Check the "permissions" on the file you'll be replacing...and change the new file to have the same permissions (prior to moving, just to be safe).
Move and replace the new file into place.
If your phone didn't reboot during that process...
Double check the permissions again...
And reboot.

I knew it was only a matter of time, and that's a good resolve. Thanks for the alternative!

I'm not seeing that file on the website you mentioned. If I ctrl+f framework, all I see is a GoogleServicesFramework.apk file. Would it perhaps be the StatusWidget.apk from that list that I am looking for?

Status widget doesn't sound right, but I have never had to recover my notifications bar before.

Ahh this is all confusing me. I can't find the framework-res.apk on that site either. Would it work to just hard reset my phone then download an app restore app? Then re-root it and restore everything to how it used to be with Titanium?

The framework-res.apk was an attempt to fix your phone without wiping your apps and all that fun stuff. A hard reset wouldn't fix the problem because the file, in theory, is still corrupted or not working. I would sbf your phone. It looks creepy but it's just resetting back to stock.

Alright, looks like that's what I'm gonna try. Thanks to both of you for all the help, it is greatly appreciated . Before I go through with it I was just wondering, if I backup all my apps to my SD card with "App Backup and Restore" then reinstall the app after the backup, I'm guessing it should be able to reinstall my apps from the SD afterwards? (I wouldn't use Titanium to restore because I'm assuming that would restore my phone with the flawed system data I have now)

The apps themselves wont be flawed. The phone runs off a whole bunch of apk's. Just the apk that controls the notification bar was messed up. You should be fine with backing up your apps regardless of method. Use what program you're comfortable with.

Agreed...
But to reiterate...
Titanium won't bork you in any way.
Simply use the option>batch>restore USER apps option and you'll be %100 back to where you were...aside from having to change your settings back to where you had them...
Also...
Facebook and any "Overclocking" applications seem to behave badly when restored.
Not in a negative way...
But I always uninstall them after a restore and install manually through the market...
Facebook won't receive push notifications if you don't.
And Overclock apps simply may not work.
Everything else (game data...whatever) will be exactly as you had it.
Check my sig if you need...
And use the sections about backing up and restoring your data.
Ignore the actual rom flashing part...as it's irrelevant in your situation.
There is also another SBF link in there if the one Fluffy posted is dead.

So I downloaded the latest RSD lite with no problems, but whenever I try to download the "Droid X 4.5.602 SBF Gingerbread 2.3.3" file, it leads me to http://www.multiupload.com/57SX6Q5HJI which lists the file as 602.sbf.zip but downloads as a program called "iLivid", which is a video downloading program.
Any suggestions?

Figures, thanks a bunch. I tried the download links from two different forums and both led to that same program download, but it looks like I've got the right one downloading now. Thanks again for all the help, I'm going to try the whole restoration process this weekend when I have more time. I'll let you know how it goes.

Install button not working!

Well Hello there!
Everything was working fine but then that was the problem because devil was prying its eyes on my phone :laugh:
Now I can't click on install button when installing apps from apk file. Cancel button is working fine and also installing apps from app store have no issues as well. I have tried installing other apps and on some them install option is working and those are the apps which do not require any permissions. So the apps with any permission access have problem with Install button.
Everything was working fine but the I installed the last app named Network Monitor mini downloaded from other source and this app has a permission "Draw over other app and Modify system settings" maybe something fishy?! and also while I was typing here, Lg keyboard is not working properly like its automatically autocorrects on its own, turns caps, etc. I was hard time while typing here.
Any help? :crying:

Tried but no luck :crying:
I've tried everything I could. Well there were some topics like this that were around 4 year old which caused due to some apps like lux, screen dimmer, etc. but I don't have anything like that and also this keyboard is causing problem a lot like auto typing, cursor jumping somewhere else, etc. Maybe factory reset is only thing left. I had the same Problem a few weaks ago.
To fix it i first download the .apk file again. Then i opened a File Manager (for me it's Es File Explorer) went to the Download folder and clicked on the .apk file, the install Button didn't work. Now You have to click on the recent Apps Button in your navbar and switch to another App and directly switch back to the File Explorer, where the Installation windows is still open. Now i could press the install Button.
Hope this works.

Well I did factory reset and the problem was still the same because the first app I installed was ES file explorer and guess what this problem was only occurring in ES file explorer :laugh:
Everything is working fine when I open any apk file with default file manager. :good:

This is happening to me and it's the first time ever. I thought the phone was knackered again. I got into a boot loop when I flash the Magisk 17.0 zip from TWRP (the recommended option to install after DL was not visible). Could not get out of boot loop but was able to boot into TWRP so I just flashed Fulmics again (easiest option for me) and restored some backups and downloaded some APKs. Only one APK would install normally but if I pressed the power button and then woke the phone up again with the power button it would work and the "Install" option would no longer be greyed out.
Does anyone know why this is happening and if there is a permanent fix?

Remove content purchased from B&N

Sorry, this might be a question that has been answered many times but I can't find an answer. A number of titles which I downloaded via wireless when Nook supported the device in the UK appear on my Nook Simple Touch but I cannot delete them. I assume they're on a hidden drive or folder. Do I need to root my device in order to see them and/or delete them?

Downloads from B&N are stored in /data/media/B&N Downloads. I'm afraid you will need to at least root to remove the old books. The easiest way to do this is with NookManager, although it is a little outdated and will add a few things you probably don't want (which you can then remove). A good file manager would also be helpful as Relaunch is kind of difficult to work with in that manner.
Anyway, once you get into the correct directory, just delete the book files from the "Books" folder and also the little "book" file from the Downloads directory.
I've attached a good file manager app which you can side load from your SD card once you get rooted with NookManager. Any questions, just ask. I've been meaning to get around to updating Nook Manager but have been distracted by other projects.
Oh, just in case things go south, the first thing you should do with NookManager once it boots up is to back up your current system, B&N books and all. At least you will be able to return to square one that way if needed.
Edit: as an alternative approach, since you're apparently not rooted and don't want to retain your B&N content, you could just reflash the system to change it over to US firmware (1.2.1) and then update to 1.2.2 (current) in the usual manner. You will be able to register an account with B&N US, if you wish, and your old books will go away in the process. You'll have "brand new" device.

sideload file explorer
Hi. I have installed NookManager, backed up and rooted the device. I copied the file explorer apk file onto the SD card and thought I would need to click / touch it to sideload it but I get a parse error. Can you give me any advice? Thanks.

Mmm......it's that $%*# Relaunch. I just don't get that app and never could figure out how to make it do simple housekeeping tasks. Ugly, too, IMHO
So, originally ES File Explorer was included with NookManager and then it was removed because Relaunch could supposedly manage files, etc. And maybe it can. Perhaps you have to hop on one foot while swinging a dead chicken around your head to get it to perform. Why bother?
Here's where it gets interesting--two options :
1. If you just want your NST to function as it did before, without the books you want to delete, you can go here: https://sites.google.com/site/xcdguides/nook/nookregion and follow the instructions to flash your firmware to US. That will be 1.2.1. You can register that with B&N and then go here: https://help.barnesandnoble.com/app...tware-updates-for-tls-1.2-compliance#ManualDL and follow the directions for manual download of the update for firmware 1.2.2--or maybe it will automatically update when you try to register 1.2.1. Anyway, that will get you back to the functioning e-reader that you know, minus the books from your defunct UK account.
2. If you want to fiddle with more of the Android side of the NST while still retaining the e-reader function minus the old books, then you do need to root, etc. I've assembled an update package for NookManager (attached below) which deals with the issue you were having. You can download the package, unzip it, and apply the changes to the card you prepared with NookManager using your PC.
Specifically:
a. replace the contents of files/data/app with the apps in my update package. Relaunch and Amazon app store will be gone. The first is problematic, as you found, and the second does not work any longer. In their place you will get a real launcher (ADW) and a real file manager (ES) preinstalled.
b. copy the contents of the scripts folder from my update package into the scripts folder of the NookManager card, overwriting where needed. This updates the software so it can also root FW 1.2.2, and adds the installation instructions for ADWLauncher and ES File Explorer. You need to remove from the card the "install_x" files for Relaunch and Amazon app store (the latter might be called something like Venezia if you don't see an entry for Amazon app store).
Once you've made those changes, power down your NST and insert the NookManager card. If you made a backup before rooting (I hope you did), restore it, reboot, and then run NookManager again, this time to root the device.
That should do it. Be aware that when you have an alternate launcher installed, you are given a choice each time you boot. If you choose the Nook Home and make that the default (by checking the little box) there will be no way to get to any of the stuff you just did. And, if you use the QuickNav buttons to go "Home", there will be no way to return to ADW launcher. How to solve this?
Do not check the little box! At least not the first time. Choose ADW Launcher, go to the app drawer and run NookTouch ModManager. There you can assign functions to the various hardware buttons and QuickNav buttons. You might start with the "n" button as whichever home screen you would prefer by default. Then perhaps a long press of the "n" button for the alternate launcher. Anyway, once you've made a way to be able to get back to ADW in some manner, then the next time you reboot or are asked about which launcher to use, you can check the little box for "default" and then make your selection.
Those books you want to get rid of? ES File Explorer can do a lot of things, but it can't get root access without going into its "Settings" (access with the "Menu" button in the status bar at the top of the NST). Somewhere in those settings (under Security?) is a place to check for Root access. When you do this you'll get a Superuser prompt which you should approve. Then also check the "up to root" selection. If you want to do any mucking around in root, you will also need to check the third option to mount the system as r/w. You can return to that when you are done and uncheck it just so you don't accidentally wreak some havoc.
Lots of other settings and capabilities for ES File Explorer, including ways to pretty it up, but that's your call. Ditto for ADW.
Those annoying toasts from Superuser can be turned off. Go into its settings and uncheck the notify on access. You'll still get a prompt for a new request, but you won't get a message every time you access root.
