Ics Possibilities - Epic 4G General

With cm9 already with us, how close are we to say, custom Ics roms, like say, a clean Ics build or something. Or are we still missing some vital components for this to happen.

CM9 and MIUI v4 will be it basically. They are already pure AOSP ROMs. What is more custom than that? There are a multitude of kernels to try with them and themes are being built on a regular basis now. Not sure what you are looking for. The only custom ROMs the epic had are based on Touchwiz and we are not getting official ICS to base ROMs off of.

The problem with basing on ICS is that you need to edit the source code and cm9 is already optimized enough. If you havent noticed, cm9 is a custom rom and IMHO the best one. It doesn't have touchwiz or bloatware or ciq so it doesnt need to be optimized, fixed, or cleaned.

I agree with other posts here. What more do we possibly need besides aosp cm9 and miui!? Lol. Its a treat that we're even seeing cm9 on our phone.

I don't know this is just my 2 cents but maybe he's asking what custom ICS stuff we can look forward to as far as customization...like in CM7 u can move the status bar to the bottom...in MIUI u can mix and match themes...control the CRT animation and some other visual and peformance things...there are a lot of spaceholders with options that haven't been implemented as of yet too

Once CM9 is out of its alpha stage and all the bugs and small tweaks are worked out and also once the devs get most of the upstream stuff i believe that we will see at best themes for CM9 but as it is now its in its "clean" state.
however i cant wait to start seeing themes come out for it i would love to learn how to theme CM9 i have some good ideas but still reading the how to's and working on my own CM7 theme lots of trial and error lol

It's not that I don't like cm9 or Don't already think ice cream sandwich is "perfect"( as is, far from it. This is the best experience I've pretty much had on my Epic. I just like seeing the variety and you guys' varied take on OS's as you've shown before. But yeah, it'll probably be a challenge cause of the almost perfect stableness.

-Fix eh17 problems without further work
-Support ext 4 yet
Does

-allow overclock without tregrak
-allow voodoo sound without the payed app
-allow other tweaks like the keyboard skip fix

So it won't help stop the random reboots even though it appears to be a voltage/deep sleep transition issue?

Yeah, I think so too. The kernel will allow all those things to be fixed, but some things will take longer to develop than others. Like even though the kernel doesn't automatically fix EH17 bugs or turn into EXT4, I'm positive you'll see kernels that fix EH17 bugs as well as EXT4 converted.
My question? Does this mean wimax in cm7 or is that still samsungs private code?

If someone could please clarify the following questions:
1) What exactly does the Epic 4g need that it does not have to run the latest cyanogenmod with full functionality?
2) I assume this source code release does not directly help in implementing cm7. Is that correct?
3) What are the prospects of the Epic 4g being a fully supported cm7 phone sometime in 2012?
Thanks

Okey doke, I've got you.
1) Well for the longest while we've needed an AOSP kernel based on our kernel which we didn't have source to. A GB kernel with source which of course we had gotten due to Mkasick, Rodderik, Jt countless others. As well as a close to official build of CM7(7.1) which is also greatly made possible due to Decad3nce and Jt, and countless others. We're closer because they were coding in the dark kernel wise before now. And Samsung released their official build as well. (Damn you Samsung)
2) It does help, because they now have a basis to work off of to try to get an AOSP kernel which may take time, but we've some of the most talented Rom developers and kernel developers working together to do this.
3) It could happen befoe 2012, there isn't an eta we can give for something such as this when the catalyst we've needed for months has finally been given to us.
I hope I was of some help. If any more questions ask me I'll gladly answer.

Wait, wait, wait, we never covered the essential question:
Can the source enable my phone to make coffee?
It does: have a cute name called source
It does: have the ability to be downloaded, its available right now.
It does: happen to be something everyone's always asked for.
It does not: help you walk your dog.
It does not: improve your Call of Duty skills
It does not: like the fact that I'm making jokes about it.
K'done .

I see I don't understand the basics of what's going on here.
We've had Froyo source for months, but that was not AOSP?
Or have Samsung/Sprint released something with Gingerbread that they did not release with the Froyo source?
Am I understanding correctly that there are now no remaining structural obstacles and implementing CM is just a matter of development time?
Another question: What is the advantage of cyanogenmod over the stock and custom roms already available for the Epic 4g, meaning what will be better once CM7 is running?

No, Froyo source came out late with GB was "right around the corner". So development stopped waiting for GB source.

It isn't AOKP per-say but CM9 is based on AOSP, and is in definition, "kanged" before it's a Release Candidate.. You could say we already have AOKP via our CM team. still interested on what advantages there'd be in having that in our Epic.

Why no AOSP roms yet?

We have the kernel source and aosp source for ICS (not JB)(obviously) so why hasn't anyone made an aosp Rom? It seems even other devices get AOSP roms a lot faster. Is there a problem with porting AOSP to the S3 phones in general (US VERSIONS) or does no dev really care for AOSP and is happy with TouchWiz? I don't know, and I'm just curious. Just to be clear, I'm not asking any devs to get on it or work on it or rush it, just pure curiosity. Thanks. Hoping some devs could reply to clear some things up.

Yeah I get that it's running touchwiz which is like you said basically a 0% true android experience but wouldn't you just be able to delete the touchwiz all together and flash a new Rom. You can't do that without achieving AOSP. ICS AOSP is helpful, but everyone wants JB.
The JB AOSP source code isn't out and when it is, the closed-source RIL is the biggest obstacle to making it work.

You can't have AOSP ROMS without the AndroidOpenSource for 4.1, which isn't out for 2 more weeks. And for 4.0, the devs still need time.
someone else mentioned that a lot of the devs might have held out for the 32gb models which were hard to come by opening week. the 16gb versions came out first. anyway, there are a lot of great devs on board, and not just historically samsung devs. htc devs like myn will be pumping out roms soon enough.

Yeah, I hope by the time the SGS4 rolls around in a year that 32GB will be the new low-end, with 64GB the step up. I really hope we don't stagnate here -- or worse: go backwards -- just because of this cloud crap.
My guess would be that most of the devs have the international version. They have had AOSP roms for weeks. Not to mention cm9, aokp, and about to get miui4
My guess would be that the phone is just getting released in the US and maybe the devs are waiting for 4.1 source so we can have a Jelly Bean AOSP rom instead of spending so much time to create an ICS AOSP. That doesn't make much sense to me, why waste time on ICS when JB is coming out in couple of weeks.
Can't most efforts on ICS apply to JB, or do things like project butter really change up the porting?
I imagine Google Play on stock/root or CM9 would be a lower-hanging fruit.

Android 4.1 Jellybean in AOSP

Google developer Jean-Baptiste Queru, also known as JBQ, has announced on Google Groups that they are now releasing the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean source code to Android Open Source Project (AOSP).

We're releasing Android 4.1 in AOSP today.
The name of the tagged release is android-4.1.1_r1.
The name of the development branch is jb-dev.
We recommend that you create new clients, even if you're working in
the master branch. It'll make your clients smaller and faster to sync.

No, I am serious......without NVidia playing ball we have no true ICS. You said it yourself.....not fully functional! We have pseudo ICS with features that don't work properly, and sub optimal OS. This isn't a slam against any dev. Just stating what I believe is fact. We had the kernels, etc., before any ICS porting started. We lack what the devs require for a true ICS OS.
So you can say its ICS but its crippled. That's why I say like a themed GB.

-> Implying that a BMW engine is better than Ford.
Anyway I get what you meant, but it's not fair to say that it's a themed GB, especially not fair to the devs that have worked so hard to get a working version. The only things that aren't working (at least for me) are HW Libs, Camera is a little jerky, and Browser rotation on most browsers. I think that's pretty good and can only get better once we get a finished kernel.

if its based off of cm10 use cm10 as a base and take framework, app, libandroid_runtime.so, libandroid_servers.som libmedia_jni.so and media from the baked beans and (overwrite)merge them into a cm10 zip. dont release it though unless you do modifications such as fixes or such. and be sure to credit the respected devs.

above is pretty much from him, we've helped each other for the past 2ish 3 months on sense 2 and 4, but he says porting aosp things are all the same, not much difference. and he is very helpful!
Yeah I tried porting using a guide on youtube but it was based off of cm9 so that may be why I keep getting a boot loop. When I get home and am by a computer I will give it a shot. I was also considering crossbones and remjb

it bootlooped because you didnt have the libs i stated a few posts above., now remember, it isnt for the faint hearted! it can be tedious.
go for it. there's an 1103 out now too but these latest builds have been giving me some hard times with google maps. I don't remember ever having the problem in the builds before the 28th. I do have it working with some clearing data, uninstalling, rebooting, permissions, blah blah toggle toggle witchcraft stuff and after wards it seems to work just fine with out any issue after. I honestly have no idea how or why it came up but I do see some other people mentioning gps stuff so hopefully it wasn't anything I did as I haven't changed my process in any way that can have that as a side effect. then again I haven't been doing clean installs like I used to always do, maybe it's that?
I didn't do a full port of that rom as I still don't see anything that special in it apart from aokp, slimbean, cm10, and all the other aosp like roms. besides the inverted apps the main appeal to baked looked like it's settings section and maybe the altered status bar which messes up some themes if I'm not mistaken. It'd be cool to see a xperia port over from the ns4g, or remjb/touchbean, or miui jb over another near cm stock experience.
I use cm10 as my base, then do my slimming, then do my merging, then my tweak adding (your fonts wont be stock if you use my base). If you're trying to pinpoint bugs in your learning process it'll be better to use the cm10 stock base over mine. I have logging disabled too so if you do want to try with my base enable it so you can pull some logcats.
Isn't Black Bean based off of AOKP 4.1.1?

Use the guide above from andy_nu then logcat. or if its from the nexus s 4g, its easier. If its from the nexus s 4g, copy meta-inf from cm10 as well as everything outside system. Then, copy vendor, lib/hw, firmware, cameradata, and etc/wifi from cm10. Then, copy etc/vold.fstab and vold.conf and bin/vold from cm10. Then edit the build.prop in the cm10 ns4g modem zip to have the same version info as the black bean rom and copy it over. Then, copy lib, bin, etc, and vendor (and everything besides app in /system of the ns4g modem zip. Also, add the boot.img of the ns4g cm10 modem zip.
Make sure you flash the ns4g modem if you don't already have it. its a bit easier to port roms using ns4g modems rather than epic modems because epic modems require framework hacks, and apktool can be frustrating.
