So I called T-Mobile and got approved for an early upgrade since i've been a customer since 2004.
The only thing is I found out they no longer bill in a 3 month cycle but make you pay upfront for the phone.
I'm looking at the Galaxy S2 and I don't have $300 upfront to pay for the damn thing.

You might as well just say screw T-Mobile and buy one off eBay for $150-$200 more lol.
Thats what i've said..
Only good thing about getting it through T-Mobile is the warranty.
They should retain that billing feature for good customers...I've been with them since 2004.... am I really going to bail on them over a phone? Stupid...
Literally paying 300 is almost 3/4 of my paycheck... I mean yea right... I'm not right. I'll just use my Galaxy S... Thing works fine anyways.
Or you can get one off craigslist for 300 with no contract like I did.

I agree. The payment thing was great for them. It made people MORE likely to jump into a new phone and extend their contract. Pretty stupid business decision on their part.
But they've been going downhill for a while.
I'm thinking that its about time for this business model to die anyway. I hate being tied to a carrier, and I want a phone that actually gets upgrades.
The only thing that made the 2 yr. upgrade worth it was the fact that the phone was automatically cut in half. $600 retail, down to $250. They simply early upgraded me for being a customer since 2004... so cool..
But what I don't have is $300 to spare on a phone... or if I decide I don't want to be tied to a carrier (which doesn't matter because I can't use a T-Mobile phone or Verizon or on ATT 3g band)
I thought it was very convenient to go into the store, have to pay around $80 upfront, then have the remaining balance split up over a 3 month period... so people who don't have excess money to spend that often can go ahead and get an upgrade every so often..
In either case, this has just made me double think, and I will keep my Vibrant probably for another year or two now. Nothing wrong with it, could use better battery life though.
I am going to wait for if and when GS2 will show up for free with an eligible upgrade on Amazon or Wirefly. Get the 1800 mah epic touch battery for the time being if you are concerned about battery life.
So save $100 each month and after 3 months you can pay up front for it? I don't see what the big deal is.

Craigslist has SGSIIs for $300?
You must live in a nice place.
In my area I see them for about $350-500. So yes, they are going for around $300 on craigs.
Any any case, what does the price of this phone have to do with the topix of tmobile no longer billing monthly for phone upgrades?

I made the same decision except I might go for the sgs3. I bought the 1800 mah Anker battery on Amazon (sorry, my links are still disabled) and I'm really happy with it. I get about 20 hours moderate use running ics passion v12 at 1000 MHz on conservative.

LOL!!
Back to the OP, I'm annoyed that TMo didn't offer the SGS2 to me for $100. They were running a special on "new customers" only, but wanted to charge me $349 to "upgrade" my line. I've been with them for over 6 years and 5 lines on the account.
Goes to show how they take care of their existing customers. Glad I didn't upgrade my contract as I'm thinking of going to Verizon and getting the Galaxy Nexus as soon as one of my other line's contract is up.

so im in bit of dilema... I had a iPad (yay its gone) and i want to buy a Xoom. I frequently used my iPad for school but now that i dont have it im realizing how much i really needed it @[email protected]
So my problem, will stores (bestbuy in particular) have the Xoom on Sunday (3/27)? Or should i just buy the normal one tomorrow? I seriously need a tab ASAP and i dont want to wait if i dont have to.
it depends on how much you plan on using it me personally I got the 3g one since I like having internet everywhere I go without worrying about wifi
Just buy the regular one from best buy for full retail and then return it when wifi comes out. I believe you have 14 days return. Double check before you buy so you can't cuss me out ;-)

yes its 14 days, but they charge a restocking fee in the neighborhood of $50-$70.
The WiFi comes out in 5 days, just wait and save yourself $200... Just call your local store and ask, they should be on sale on the 27th. If not, you can pre-order on amazon and you should have it by monday if not Saturday (they sometimes ship it 1 day early to ensure you get it in time for launch).
ill call tomorrow and ask. like i said i need it ASAP, so no later than next monday 3/28.

I wouldn't mind paying the monthly fee. It is the added $200 bucks premium I dont have the stomach for. If it was $599 for 3G, I'll pick one up and do month to month non-contract. Works for me.
I got mine with the 2yr contract. One thing to think about is you can get the 1gb/m plan and upgrade/downgrade at anytime. so 20bucks per month , net anywhere, 200 bucks off the $800 price tag. worth it to me. extra 10 bucks gets you the protection plan incase you break it.
i opt for 3G model.
With the iPad I can see not having the need of 3G and WIFI version is perfectly fine. But with Xoom, I am really debating. The whole benefit of Honeycomb is the widget functionality. A lot of the widget relies on having internet to update (i.e.: news, weather, etc.,). So not having 3G, that really going to hamp down the true experience of XOOM isn't it?
But then again, paying the premium of $200.00 just to have the 3G benefit sucks...*sigh*...decision decision.

I think its just like any phone contract, you can upgrade/downgrade your minutes/texts/data etc. at any time to apply to the next month.
I bought the 3G/LTE (upgradable) version, but I bought it off contract. Verizons data plans are a joke, $20 for 1 GB of data, no unlimited option? That is insulting, considering that the LTE could chew through that in a day. I hate the way the wireless ISP data plans are going. Looking a my sprint bills I use around 10 GB per month.
I just use my EVO 4g and tether it to my Xoom, my Xoom is in airplane mode all the time, which saves on the battery. Also on a side note, one overlooked feature new to honeycomb ( I think its new, my evo with can't do it) you can use bluetooth while in airplane mode without having to toggle airplane mode. Nice touch none of the reviewers mention.

You do realise there's a HUGE difference between an iPhone and... well... any other phone, right? People flock to iPhones like gnats to a sweaty forehead. And not even just the US. Hell, i sold my iPhone 4 that i had since they came out to someone in Russia for $450. That was enough to cover the cost of the iPhone when i originally bought it, PLUS the Atrix. I've only ever seen one person NOT in an AT&T store that had an Atrix. Just about every smartphone you see on the street is some version of the iPhone. And with the 3GS now being $49.... I'd imagine that ratio will be even higher. People don't know how to find a good phone. They know what is crammed down their throat no matter where they turn... and that just happens to be any Apple product, really.
Hell... look on TV. You see at least 5 iPhone commercials for every single Atrix commercial... and they advertise the lapdock more than the phone itself it seems.

Yes. Check their website for the exact amount.
BTW, they give this phone for free in Europe with contract.
Who thinks sprints upgrade isn't as good as it should be. Your with them for awhile and when due for a upgrade after 2 years but is it really a upgrade.
Most of the free phones are older and not new lol there older no one wants them thats why there free.
You get the same thing a discount a new customer gets 150 off with a 2 year new contract WTF.You would think after being with them for awhile you get a better discount that would be nice.
So what do you guys think? Keep it on topic what you feel about the upgrade. Also without getting insane about money there making and losing.

I'm sorry but this thread fails. Lol. An upgrade means going from old to new. From good, to better. You're going from an older phone to a newer phone. A good phone to a better phone. An UPGRADE.

I see how alot of people see it even tho sprint makes a thousands of dollars every 2 years off you no one seems to care that the upgrade is ****ty lol sometimes it's not worth using the upgrade cause there is nothing worth buying at the moment sometimes the phone your using is better then whats out. So each to the own.
Was a general question doing a study on thoughts of people who like the upgrade and those who don't so no FLAMING IF YOU DO FLAME YOU WILL BE REPORTED AND YOUR COMMENT DELETED. SO KEEP IT NICE AND TO THE POINT. THANKS.
Well....... I mean.... no carrier is just gonna give you a free phone when you upgrade. Unless you pick a basic crappy phone. They're giving you a 300-400 dollar discount on a phone... that's generous if you ask me.
I can see how you might think a customer who's been with sprint for 2 or more years should get a nicer discount, yeah, that would be nice. But that doesn't mean we aren't upgrading our phones.

They don't make their money back in 6 months... it takes a minimum of 12 months to make their money back, after that is when they start making profit, assuming you're not taking advantage of the yearly upgrades in which then, they barely make any money back off of you.

Leta see that's 1260 a year minus the 350 they ate for you getting the evo ($910), plus running the stores, network, payrolls, and what ever other expenses im sure they make a slim profit margin in there somewhere.

I mean its pretty much a given that the phone is going to be around $499.. radio shack is selling it full retail for $499, Amazon for $469 so Im guessing sprint will be in the $450-499 range. But I dont get why theyre the ONLY people that HAVENT given a full retail price yet considering its a damn Sprint phone.
Nice I'll have to check that out on line
Does anyone have any idea how long Sprint usually offers its buyback price? I'm curious how long the price will hold.
I've searched on google for answers specifically about sprint buy back of the evo 4g and this was unfortunately the closest i could find. Anyway, here are my questions. Thanks in advanced.
1. Am I assured $150 for my phone or do "they" determine the value an give you an amount they choose. I'm skeptical of actually getting the full amount.
2. Can I keep the micro sd card and charging cable? That'd be awesome if so.

All you need to send them is the phone. You keep everything else.
I've read in other forums that they give you a flat 150 dollars as long as the phone powers on. But I'm not positive.

I went into Radioshack today, and they said I can call Sprint, because they'll push my upgrade to 1 year early (for a limited time though) and I can buy the 3D for $199, or if I sell my phone to them (Radioshack) it'll only cost me $50
Sprint gave me $150 flat for my Evo.The Rep hardly looked at it..all she did was power it on,took out the battery to put the S/N into the system and hand me a receipt for $150 that's credited to my account. It took excatly 90 sec.
I have since moved to the Sensation on T-mobile.

I am from Canada and I'm with bell. I see all this people ordering phones for the price of 680$ and i can't help to ask myself if all those ppl are not on any contract. Because if you are in a 2 or 3 year contract you'll pay 200$ for the phone....So. If you are in a contract and are ordering the s3 please post your reasons please.
One of the reasons can very well be that there is a good flow of money and allows to get phones every year

Yep.. I hear ya. I just recently ran my contact out. Bought my GS2 for full price and didn't resign. Now I'm buying the GS3 with no contract. (I was considering switching to Verizon.. that's why I ran my contract out) but now I'm gonna stick around for a little bit. Oh and I happen to have the money right now, and you only live once so I'm going for it!
Though.. it wasn't easy telling my gf how much I paid

Cuz my current phone is absolutely uselessly unreliable but if i cancel my contract i will lose my unlimited data which is basically impossible to get now for the price i am paying.

You can try getting your current contract phone unlocked, sell it, then buy the sg3 (or a newer phone in general) to replace it.
In general contracts are more expensive than their prepaid alternatives (that's the point of having them). They also ensure that you're locked-in. This is why getting something that does not have you extend your contract is preferable. At the end of the day, however, the only way to tell if it's worth it is to do the math and determine whether that's a price you're willing to pay for a $400 discount.
Youhit it right on the head.....a good flow of money allows me to buy 2 to 3 phones a year. so i bought the Note Lte, then im getting the international SGSIII, i will then switch back to LTE when the Note 2 comes out later this year I hope.
i love my phones and tablets........cant wait for the next big break on Tabs. My Prime is gathering dust....lol

Many of us have a good reason. Mine is that i got a free skyrocket when o renewed my contract and i sold ot immediately for 500. Then I just sold my captivate that i was using for 120 so now the sgs3 isnt really costing me much.

Most of the users on xda are 27+ years old, they have the money...
While others like me, stick to one phone for 3+ years if possible and try to get the best phone at present.
3 years have passed and now its time for a new phone, ill get the international one which is unlockable/rootable for xda hacks and stuff like that

Yeah that should be easier to sell. The international versions just hold more value.

I'm in the UK on giffgaff. The network gives you payback for referrals and community help. It's paying me a fair bit this way, more than enough to cover the cost of the phone and topups
In Austria there are some really cheap bargain-contracts where you pay ~10€ per month for EVERYTHING (1gb, 1000 texts, 1000 minutes). These contracts also don't come with the obligation to stay at the network-provider for 24 months or so. The only thing: With these contracts you don't get an expensive phone cheaper, you need to buy it for the full price on the market.
But all in all you're on the cheaper side with these bargain contracts than with the normal contracts, because with normal contracts you pay about 20 to 50€ for the same service! If you calculate for 24 months, it's actually a bit cheaper when you buy the phone on the market for full price. With the advantage that you don't have any obligation to stay at this provider.
I'm in the US under AT&T, my contract is up in June. The reasons I'm getting the Int. S3 are:
- Won't be released in the US until later in the Summer
- Won't have to extend my AT&T contract
- Retain my AT&T phone upgrade discount (in case any come out I want)
- US version will be inferior to the Int. in many ways IMO (other than LTE)
- higher re-sale value
Those are the main reasons.
This is a re-post of something i posted up on another S3 thread:

meeh, i dont mind waiting, but some of us have more than 1 spare phone available. others dont. so in that case, i'm right there with ya.
but on the other hand, $10 AT&T medianet is a no-brainer for me.. I'll buy an iPhone or an AT&T HOX on AT&T upgrade/contract for $199 and sell it on XDA MP or Craigslist for $600. That's $400 profit. International SGS3 is $700, less the $400 for the sold AT&T HOX. That's $300 out of pocket for an international SGS3.
Then take AT&T's 3gb data plan of $30 per month, multiply that by 24 and I get $720. VERSUS AT&T's medianet unlimited data plan for $10 per month, multiply by 24 and I get $240.
$720 minus $240 is $480. Take $480 and apply that towards the $300 you have left on the SGS3 after i've sold my AT&T HOX. I'm still out on top $180 (unless i did my math wrong, which im prone to do often lol)
This is my rational for getting an international SGS3.

I'm on Sasktel. Sasktel chooses to shaft it's user base again and again.
What's different now? Oh yeah. COMPETITION! I can pop over to Rogers, Bell, Telus, Fido, Koodo...but that damn contract...that's the pain.
So, I figure when it comes out, I can buy either the bell OR sasktel version outright, slap it on Sasktel, and wait until next year to move.
I'm seriously debating the Expansys one though. If I pre-order a 16GB right now, it will be mine in no time at all.
That way...come September 2013, I can move, get a new phone for my wife for cheap (her needs aren't nearly the same as mine), get whatever latest greatest then, and turn around and sell my still amazing SGS3 for $400-$500 bucks, and my new contract didn't cost me a cent.
Because people don't want to be tied into contracts. In the UK 24 months seems the norm where as as few years ago 12 month contracts where widely available.
2 years is a long time, especially if the network you are on has poor signal and such. Most plans have poor amounts of data, but the likes of Three offer unlimited data for £34pm and free phone, however signal can be an issue on Three. And I myself have terrible speeds previously on Three.
So buying outright and then a sim only route does not tie you down, you can sell 12 months down the line and get half your money back if the phone value holds, it'll be worth more than say 2 years down the line. This method does work out more expensive but it's worth it if you keep updating all the time.
Im getting the international version because I think ATT is the devil reincarnated and I hear good things about T-Mobile but Im not sure I want to sign a 2year contract with them since Im already signed with Sprint. The only thing that makes me weary of pulling the trigger on the pre-order is I just ordered the Evo 4g LTE and my money is tied up with that and Im not sure if the US version is getting the 2gb of RAM like the Japanese version. Im just not sure wich I would rather have Quad Core Exynos or Duals core S4 with 2gb or Ram. Plus I plan on stepping up my international travel game this year and it would be nice to have a phone that I would be able to just pop a sim card in and no hassle.
Despite its poor software and being unlocked anyway im still keeping this current phone just for media playback.
I use it to play tunes from samba shares on a wifi harddrive between bands (i do sound) cuz its way more portable than a laptop but it means i cant really use the phone at all while im working. Bit of an oversight selling my previous one when i got this really.
