[Solution]Fix market compatibility issues when using custom DPI - Nexus S General

Someone pointed this out to me in other section and it actually works great
for those who change your density you are well aware of the compatibility issues with the market and only way to fix is to change back to 240dpi update or download and then have to change back in buld.prop...its a pain to say the least
xda member theb1rdm4n
released a density changer that includes a modded market app that he keeps up to date
that allows you to spoof original 240dpi with market and still maintain your custom density setting
by default with custom dpi you cant update your apps and allot of apps are missing on market because of this
But lower DPI is just too good to pass up
anyways here is the link to his page
FYI its only in the pro version

Market problem

It seems that the new market is checking on screen density. For YouTube it has to be 240, but other apps are also missing.
On other phones, this is fixed with a screen density app, but the tattoo is totally useless at 240. Does anyone know how to fake the screen density, so that it looks like 240 for the market, but is still the 120 for our screen?

Are you sure is a density problem? For missing apps I use market enabler that fakes region and operator, sometimes is useful and reset after reboot.. Or find out the app on xda/gapps/aptoide and install without market.. Maybe to getting more help try saying something more, like version of market and rom..
I tried market enabler, didn't help.
My rom is the CM NB 169, and my market is version 3.1.3

try the following link if you want to get previous version of android market back
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1231358
at least that is best thing for us, new market being painstakingly slow, laggy and draggy
or try to change phone fingerprint in build.prop to make market think you have a bigger phone,
as mentioned in the following post

New or old market

I will be getting a nook color this week and was wondering whether it was better to freeze the old market or get the new one with doing problems
Sent from my Incredible 2 using XDA App
More clarification, I will be installing CM7, and from all of the market issues that I hear, and then having to change the DPI of the nook color so that the market would work and would only work when you delete market data. My questions was to the people for opinions, is it worth it to let the market update to the new version, or should I use Titanium Backup to freeze the old market so it doesn't update
I would vote to use the new market. The DPI is now set to 160 by default in the latest CM7 nightlies, and I only had to delete my market data once, the first time I used it after the change. Now, it's reading and updating all of my apps properly!
I was using the frozen updater and old market trick for a while, but it wouldn't ever show me the apps that needed updating. If I used a program like AppBrain, it would try to bring up the market links, but they wouldn't load. I could manually search for the apps that needed updating, and then update them that way, but that was a PITA!
Ever since the switch to 160, things have been running smoothly, and it works so much better!

There appears to have been a google-server-side fix that occurred a week (or 2) ago, and the market issue seems to have largely been solved. That said, the market IS enforcing device awareness now, and there's still a couple things to keep in mind: 1) full market only appears to be fully supported at "standard" dpi settings, which for now is 160 (for tablet offerings) and 240 (for phones), so all non-standard dpi's will show a restricted market, and 2) some apps have device dependencies (which you can blame on the devs, not the market) and will probably never show up for us from now on.
ETA: and as far as 1.3 goes, there may be something else in the B&N build.prop (or an associated file) that the market is picking up in its device awareness checks. Oh, and since 1.3 is still Froyo, that may be part of the problem.
I would say new market. Even if you flash the RC CM7.1 just change the LCD density to 160 using an app and you'll have all the apps.
Go with the new Market, at least 3.1.5.
There is no point to use the old version.
Thanks, I appreciate your input

new market probs on cm fxp30 or maybe gb

hi, it seems that some people include me have problems with the new market(3.1.5) on FXP28/30
please when you will do make some changes, make a backup before!!!
the problem is:
not shown all apps, or its not compatible for your device
example apps: youtube, googlemaps "not compatible", or google mail and google voice search didnt find
edit:for missing apps for example "handcent sms or "go launcher ex" it didnt help, sry
here some findings
1)for not shown all apps, example "google voice search" or "google mail"
- here works: market enabler ( you can fake an other country)+older market 2.3.4
with this combination i was able to find the two apps and installed it
2)device is not compatible, example "youtube" or "googlemaps"
this is only for people who changed the lcd.density in build.prop
-here works: new market 3.1.5 with default lcd.density(240)
-you can easy change when its needed with an app the lcd.density, for me works "lcd resolution", its free in market
-or you use older market and have no problem
so what is the best
a)new market without problems
-when you live in a country where you get all apps and didnt change the lcd.density
b)new market with simelar problems
-when you live in a country where you get all apps and have changed the lcd.density, so use an app for easy switch the lcd.density like "lcd resolution"
c)older market + market enabler without problems
-when you live in a country where you dont get all apps and have changed the lcd.density
to keep older market
-with titanium backup freeze market-updater
to keep older market, but its updated
-with titanium backup freeze market updater
-go to settings/applications/manage applications/downloaded and navigate to market update, clear data, force stopp and uninstall
edit:for missing apps for example "handcent sms or "go launcher ex" it didnt help, sry
Uninstalled Market updates
Could not freeze market updater, so uninstalled.
Still same problems
This just isn't true. Edited build.prop on wife's phone tried several combinations, when logged in to market from the computer Google thinks its a Samsung galaxy s. Tried changing dpi, freezing market updater does nothing market still updates. Nothing works. Google is checking your device some other way I think. Anyways, black mart or just Google "appname apk download". May take a few tries to find a good link but sideloading seams to be the only way to beat the big "G". At least for me.
I agree. There must be another way for the market to check for compatibilities. Relying on build.prop alone is ridiculous. I'm sure they also checked the phone for some dependencies which we do not know.
thanks for reply, i agree with you that we didnt know how to checked google our device.
i posted only possible ways to get it working, not really fixes, this was my experience and my tests, maybe this will make it clearer.
im on FXP30 and live in germany and i change allways on any roms, the lcd.density from default 240 to 190 in build.prop
so my problems with the new market (3.1.5)was
a)your device is not compatible with this app, for example "youtube" or "google maps"
b)didnt find some apps, for example "google mail" or google "voice search", but here i must say, its only country related!!!, not market
so i fixed it for me
for a) new market with default lcd.density, or older market (2.3.4) with my changed lcd.density to 190
for b)market enabler + older market (2.3.4), at the moment the best combo for me
maybe it will help when you post your findings or not working apps
hi all
now screenshoots on FXP30 and the "you tube" app in new market and older market
you tube app is installed and i searched on market new + older, shows me this
please read all, im on fxp30 with lcd.density 190
again screen shoots about "gmail" and older market+market enabler on fxp30
here please remember read all, and i live in germany there is no "gmail" on market
here changed on older market the country with market enabler from 26202 to 310260 (germany provider to us t-mobile)
Does this ROM work with Doom's Kernels? It could be good to test the market with his kernel to see how it goes. Maybe it's a kernel issue? You never know...
I'm having the same trouble. Straight away after installing this ROM & Kernel I cannot update GO SMS (installed from Titanium Backup I made) saying that it's incompatible. I haven't changed the LCD density, and I have tried renaming the build.prop device setting but it makes no difference. I'd really like to see an answer to this as it's quite frustrating.
I can't see Go Launcher or Handcent SMS in the Market on the phone. I tried all the suggested changes to build prop and they are still missing.
This is what the Android Market on my pc shows when I attempt to install in from there.
Rogers Wireless Sony Ericsson X10i This item is not compatible with your device.

Funny thing is, I changed the name to X10 not X10i in the Build.Prop file.
Edit: So now, nothing in my build.prop says "X10i", I've made sure that everything says "X10" When checked, the market on PC still says "X10i" This is after a reboot of the phone, clearing market data and downloading of an app to make sure it reconnects to my account.
Edit2: I used the getprop command in terminal emulator to check that everything that I changed in build.prop had taken effect and everthing I listed matched what I put in the build.prop file.
Edit3: Now that I'm thinking about it, I do seem to remember this issue with one of the CM builds for the G1/MT3G. I'm not sure if it was with CM4,5 or 6 as it was some time ago.
thanks for posting example apps, and now im really
hancent sms (found only themes not the app)
go sms (the same only themes)
go launcher ex (only themes, but found this app with amazon appstore)
so i tried
-new market 3.1.5/3.1.6 and older market 2.3.4
-with and without market enabler
-lcd.density 240 (default)
-changed the fingerprint
-clear data applications market
-deleted android.secure from sd
and from market via pc didnt work, too
Trying out FXP041. This problem remains.
This issue is pretty much the only one that prevents me from using FXP ROM on full time.
Lots of missing apps due to:
"This app is incompatible with your <Insert operator here> Sony Ericsson X10i"
Is there a workaround available to this yet?

Market compatibility issue after MIUI?

I get this everytime i try to download a simple app for example: Google Books.
This app is incompatible with your T-Mobile Samsung T959.
T-Mobile Samsung T959
This item is not compatible with your device.
This has happened AFTER flashing miui...
is anyone else facing this without miui or with miui?
bonus question:
where are the books in google books stored in sd card? im trying to make my personal ebook but i want to just try it with google books, how can i do that?
Bump please help
I'm assuming you did the standard clear market data and wipe cache. That's all I got. Maybe a build prop issue?

yep i'm so pissed off right now. Anyways, i'm going back to the stock version of miui, maybe its because i've been using it for a long time?
edit: doing that fixed it. thanks for the help.
I was trying to help someone with this same exact problem. No solution was found. He even made sure the device fingerprint was okay. What finally worked was installing a different ROM
any Ideas how to fix this market problem?
Hmmmm. it seems that my problems with Android Market was due to the DPI change which I made - the display density.
I changed my HTC Desire back from 200 dpi to the default value if 200 dpi, after that I cleared Android Market data and cache and restarted the phone.
After that on Android Market the problem with the "This item is not compatible with your device" error on some applications was fixed.
P.S. For changeing the display density you can use one of this apps from the Market: LCD Density or LCD Density Changer
Thanks this fixed my i9000.
But WTH causes this. I don't see how changing the dpi could break market, unless app's are searching for a specific dpi range?

market organizes the apps and checks if their compatible with your device, if your device has some random ass density, then the market notices that and tries to find all apps that fit that screen size, and the apps then do not show up because the apps are made for certain, and regulated displays, which doesn't include a dpi like 642 or something

HELP! Android market app not compatible

Using : [01/feb/2012] Rom SENSATION XL V 3.0 stock ALL IN ONE (marc v0.1.8 ker)
I installed this rom, and the market updated to google play.
Device identified as HTC X315e
However this app, can not be installed as it is incompatible. It is definetely able to play using [20.Feb.2012] NexusHD2-ICS-4.0.3-CM9 V1.4 and also able to download the app. However it is not with sense.
Really want to install this game, any way to solve this problem? I have tried editing build.prop with no luck...
By the way, the android market is now changed to google play.
you should change your dpi to 240 or 160! there are apps on the market, thats the easiest way (dpi changer?) or just change it in your build.prop
----
Sorry didn't see that you alread tried this. That is the only thing that worked for me. there is a hacked market somewhere around XDA but for me it doesn't work anymore since google play immediatly updates it.
good luck though
Try to clear Market cache and redownload.
Or in terminal use marketclean.sh (i don't know if it does more than regular cache clear by app manager).
Are you sure that device you changed ID to is compatible?
Have you checked the app on https://play.google.com/store ; as you device is incompatible at the moment and would be greyed out but hovering over it may give more detail i.e. Not available in device's country. Which may be remedied by market enabler.
And FYI, the country/region may be static and built into the rom not based on actual location. which would explain why it works on some roms and not others

According to the google play supported models HTC X315e aka HTC sensation xl should be compatible, but im not sure if the other data is correct.

I dont think it is due to the country, it says that the device is not compatible.
The build.prop file shows as wwe_htc.

Tried it and it just made the rom look so small, the app is still not able to download
Well sorry, thats what worked for me. botch on 240 and 160. I'll try to find the game and see what it tells me.
I had the same problem a while ago. You have to change the Device ID and more to make your android build compatible with market
