I just got a reply from Dell and they told me that there will be no Gingerbread Update released for Dell Streak 5 nor any other updates.
Thanks for reaching out. Auto notifications will be sent when any update is ready. MA
Sorry, confirmed with a mobility expert. There are no plans to update the Streak 5 any further. Link to non-Dell /unofficial version here http://del.ly/6018RIKn. Thanks. MA

On the question why a Gingerbread Update was released for the Korean market and not for US/EU, they said
No specifics we can provide, but ultimately a business decision involving Dell & respective carriers. Thanks, SV

So, in conclusion this means, there won't be an official Gingerbread update. I can't follow this decisions, but they probably have their reasons.
Nevertheless, all the binaries for a Gingerbread build are available on Dell's servers:
http://opensource.dell.com/releases/streak/4.05/
This is old news, in that it's been known unlocked Streaks would not get Gingerbread. However a carrier-branded, thus official, version of Gingerbread exists, as you note. All the custom Gingerbread ROMs except StreakDroid are based on this carrier-branded ROM.
Did Dell really give you that link to GingerStreak? That's crazy...

I was on the dell support page today. I typed in my Service tag and there was Android 2.1 for the streak for download. I haven't installed it yet. But will do so and check it out. Have anyone spotted this? OS post date was yesterday.
yea I see this too but when you try to download its only 9.3 kb so I know it isnt 2.1, I do wonder if it is some sort of prep for the release of 2.2. Does this mean we can expect something really soon?
Looks like it's just the PC Suite, it was about 32mb. I'll download it when I get home though.

I also received the same error. I don't think they were suppose to be releasing 2.1, thought they were going directly to 2.2.

If you go to the dell forums theres a sticky about how tthey're not gonna release any more 2.1 roms for european users and the US is still on track for a 2.2 release... We just have to wait for dell now.

It's probably very possible. I haven't seen any devices that are listed that have higher specs than the streak

Possible? yes. Probable? no. As slow as Dell is updating to push Froyo out for the AT&T users, I dont see this ever happening with Gingerbread lol

That's at&ts decision. Not dells. Froyo is out for the streak. Most phones that are unlocked get their releases fast as they don't pass through carriers. They are direct from the manufacturer.

just for a comparison, the Italian version of my actual device, HTC touch HD, never got any ROM update because it was branded (not even locked) by an Italian carrier.
anyway. i don't really think there will be a gingerbread update. at least not a dell official one. all the other competitors have made official statements, tweets, and whatnot about updates to 2.3, silence from dell. skeptical... i just hope they won't be inspired by motorola on this one
i see a chance of dell dropping support for the streak on their mobile line. i dont think its done that well and i think its kinda their fault. however, if it stays on the lineup for another couple months, it may just get gingerbread. id be expecting it more from djsteve than dell though. just as a side note: no android phone on att officially has froyo yet. ponder that.

They are still selling it as new on carriers world round. So.... we'll see? But I'm sure we'll get it ported over one way or another! I haven't had much experience with Android, so I have no idea on how to do any of that kind of stuff ... So I'll wait and see if Dell mentions anything!
I think we will get Gingerbread.. Personally, I've seen more and more good news about the Streak and I would hope that because of this Dell would offer to support the Streak's upgrade path.
We all know Gingerbread is said to be more tablet friendly and Dell has marketed our device as a tablet first (phone 2nd). If it's not official from Dell I'm sure someone from XDA will keep the dream alive

nothing better than a 5" screen to see it on lol. I agree though i think it will get gingerbread, for the reason that the Dell 7 will more than likely be announced at CES people will jump to get a cheaper model price wise the streak and see if its good so that they can get the 7 for say business. Im sure it will get gingerbread as soon as it starts rolling out at least the unlocked version will lol. Not many have gingerbread if im not mistaken ive only seen the Nexus with a legit gingerbread .
I think theres no gingerbread update for streak

NFC support could be most hyped hardware thingie on gingerbread but mass market adoption will take time and there are many alternative ways to support such functionality even without a built in IC. Whether streak will get an official update or not depends on dell moving its butt to make it happen but I also use nexus one and it will be gingerized without an NFC IC and hopefully start rolling very very very soon...
More than 2 finger multitouch, gyro capabilities and apps utilizing/supporting such features will be more of my concern rather than specific support for NFC on existing hardware as gingerization rolls out...

I feel it will get gingerbread. Reason is that Google hasnt said that you need to have anything to use gingerbread unlike with Honeycomb its just up to dell to get it done.

According to Android Central: http://www.androidcentral.com/european-galaxy-s-gingerbread-update-coming-end-march
Link to Samsung Romania post: http://www.facebook.com/SamsungMobileRomania/posts/189412624430604
A post on Samsung Mobile Romania's Facebook page seems to suggest that Romanian Galaxy S phones (and presumably other European models) may see an official update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread by the end of March.
Translated into English and cleaned up a little, the post reads:
"The update to version 2.2.1 for Galaxy S will be available until 20 March, and Gingerbread (2.3) until the end of the month."
Our Romanian is a little rusty, but we think it's safe to assume the last part of that statement means either "it'll arrive by the end of the month", or "it won't arrive until the end of the month". Either way, it looks like the European Galaxy S could soon claim bragging rights as the first non-Nexus phone to get an official Gingerbread update. HTC has announced that Gingerbread will be coming to some of its older phones, but these updates aren't due until sometime in the second quarter.
Samsung Romania also adds that two of its budget phones, the i5500 Galaxy 5 and i5800 Galaxy 3, will be updated to Froyo by Mar. 20 and Mar. 31 respectively. [Samsung Romania Facebook via Crave]

The universal kernel is for 2.2 and 2.2.1 ROMs only.
Also, it's not a universal kernel, it's a universal settings.apk that's been fixed for us.

I don't really know the history of the Vibrant, (Picked it up off Craigslist 2 months ago) but this at least gives me some hope.
God, getting Gingerbread on the Vibrant would be AMAZING. It would increase the speed, and once the source is released, we would see some awesome gingerbread ROM's for it.
Just one gingerbread leak for vibrant, then we will be back in business.

Seriously. All they need is the driver sources + the kernel and CM7 would become amazing.
Hopefully somebody will be able to port it quickly if T-Mobile foes not roll out the rom in the same timeframe...
Tmobile said they would be more up to speed on updates. Take that for what you want it to mean.
That is all I gotta say about this subject.

+1. This was released by T-mo after 2.2 was released on kies for the vibrant. So hopefully we'll get gingerbread alot faster than froyo. And hopefully the first of the U.S galaxy S phones to be updated again.
If the Vibrant gets an official Gingerbread update EVER I will buy a Galaxy Tab immediately.

But he's got Honeycomb 3.1 on Streak7, so he should be able to get it on Streak5 as well
As stated in first post Steve is waiting on a set of drivers that Dell cannot release do to licensing. Dell has released the shareware parts of Android, but without the modem drivers he is up the creek without a paddle. Now he has a standing offer to anybody that knows how to write code, he will gladly accept any working drivers you have to offer. With luck we have somebody in his basement working like a hampster in spinning wheel writing that driver

what numbers are unlocked streaks? I updated to 360 a while back which is a 00 but I don't have a windows pc to flashboot any more
00 ROMs are for unlocked Streaks. If you don't have a Windows PC to flash though, that could be somewhat problematic. In my experience, the OTA upgrades tend to be very flaky, and thus copying the update.pkg to the SD card manually is often a better bet.
i do have an ubuntu laptop..
the last time i used flashboot was on my sisters windows laptop but she does not have it anymore i dont know how to flashboot on linux (is it even possible?) i cant even install StreakMod Recovery anymore without flashboot
I would find a copy of Windows if I were you, because I don't think there is a Linux native version of fastboot out there.
google for fastboot for ubuntu, i don´t have the url here, but i´ve sucessfull used fastboot on ubuntu 11.10

that's great news. there are a couple of things that I wish I could see updated and I am writing those down in hope that, maybe the guys developing it read this forum:
* New dialer that:
- works in all dpi's (preferably without visual bugs).
- has smart search (searching for contacts with the stock dialer on streak is a pain).
* gtalk video and audio
* toggles in the notification area (like the samsung touchwiz or cyanogen mod). This is actually a new feature but one that I think that everybody would love.
* fix fastboot erase command (I am not sure that's actually fixable by firmware but since its a wishlist )
* and the most important of all: PLEASE, release the drivers sources so we can port other ROMS, that's actually the single best thing that you could be doing for fellow streakers.
