Galaxy S Gingerbread update soon. Due at end of March! - Vibrant General

According to Android Central: http://www.androidcentral.com/european-galaxy-s-gingerbread-update-coming-end-march
Link to Samsung Romania post: http://www.facebook.com/SamsungMobileRomania/posts/189412624430604
A post on Samsung Mobile Romania's Facebook page seems to suggest that Romanian Galaxy S phones (and presumably other European models) may see an official update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread by the end of March.
Translated into English and cleaned up a little, the post reads:
"The update to version 2.2.1 for Galaxy S will be available until 20 March, and Gingerbread (2.3) until the end of the month."
Our Romanian is a little rusty, but we think it's safe to assume the last part of that statement means either "it'll arrive by the end of the month", or "it won't arrive until the end of the month". Either way, it looks like the European Galaxy S could soon claim bragging rights as the first non-Nexus phone to get an official Gingerbread update. HTC has announced that Gingerbread will be coming to some of its older phones, but these updates aren't due until sometime in the second quarter.
Samsung Romania also adds that two of its budget phones, the i5500 Galaxy 5 and i5800 Galaxy 3, will be updated to Froyo by Mar. 20 and Mar. 31 respectively. [Samsung Romania Facebook via Crave]

The universal kernel is for 2.2 and 2.2.1 ROMs only.

Also, it's not a universal kernel, it's a universal settings.apk that's been fixed for us.

That's great and all - really it is. But didn't the first Froyo releases already come out in Europe by September? Yet the Vibrant didn't get Froyo for another 4 months...

so what this means is... a year till we get gingerbread?

I don't really know the history of the Vibrant, (Picked it up off Craigslist 2 months ago) but this at least gives me some hope.

God, getting Gingerbread on the Vibrant would be AMAZING. It would increase the speed, and once the source is released, we would see some awesome gingerbread ROM's for it.

Just one gingerbread leak for vibrant, then we will be back in business.

Seriously. All they need is the driver sources + the kernel and CM7 would become amazing.

Hopefully somebody will be able to port it quickly if T-Mobile foes not roll out the rom in the same timeframe...

Tmobile said they would be more up to speed on updates. Take that for what you want it to mean.
That is all I gotta say about this subject.

+1. This was released by T-mo after 2.2 was released on kies for the vibrant. So hopefully we'll get gingerbread alot faster than froyo. And hopefully the first of the U.S galaxy S phones to be updated again.

If the Vibrant gets an official Gingerbread update EVER I will buy a Galaxy Tab immediately.

This is for the galaxy s.... IN SPAIN. This does not apply to people with the vibrant. I would assume the U.S. is more of a priority to Samsung, therefore froyo should be out before then.

Well, Samsung is a Korean company first off. Second of all, carriers don't lock/change their handsets like the US does, so it gets much easier to update when you take the carrier out of the equation. This is why Europe/Asia get new phones and the updates for those phones before the US.
That is just how it is.

And simply by the first launch day, US version of the Galaxy S is much later than the regular i9000, so it is not hard to guess the U.S. variants would get it later than the international version.
Holy crap will everyone just shut up about Froyo. Enjoy the damn phone that you have. Its not like our phones are piles of crap. People are making Froyo out to be some mythical unicorn update. But I'm sure once we get Froyo the same people will be complaining that we don't have Gingerbread yet because the Nexus 1 is getting it in December.

Damn straight! I wish I were mod, then I could lock each and every thread about Froyo.
Lol whats funny is that engadget also reported that the UK Offical Samsung Mobile twitter page reported that
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/08/t-mobile-says-samsung-gps-fix-coming-in-september/
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/08/samsung-testing-gps-fix-for-galaxy-s-phones/
See two pieces of proof something is coming in September, we still have 10 days so lets see what happens.
So We do have like 3 Dates if you want to call it that.
One is September 23, 2010 for Froyo (2.2) which is supposibly for the International Galaxy S. Maybe it'll be compatible with all. Who Knows?
Two is September 29, 2010 for Froyo (2.2) which is for Galaxy S, IDK if all phones or Just International. IDK. I got this date from T-Mobile TODAY. I Called acted like i didnt know Anything about Android and was asking questions about The Samsung Vibrant. The guy said it comes with Android 2.1 but it'll get Android 2.2 soon. I asked if he knew a date, he said hes not for sure but he Read on a Forum somewhere about September 29, 2010. We'll See.
Three is Late October 2010. Which was told TODAY by Samsung Spain and posted on Engadget. So we have 10 days til September is over we'll see what happens. Thats all i know for now.
I'm Really eager like the rest of you to find out when our phones will get 2.2. Not only for Speed Improvement but for GPS Fixes (if implemented), 3 button hardware fix (if implemented) and of course Flash 10, Chome to Phone, the New G-Mail, Google Voice, and Tethering etc.
As eager as I am to get Froyo, I'd rather wait a little longer and let Samsung do it right than have them push something that's been rushed and running like crap. Based on the recent leaks I've seen, the most current Froyo builds have been buggy and not optimized at all.
I think late October/early November is my limit though. If they push it back further, I'm not supporting Samsung anymore. I'll switch to the G2. I can trust HTC will for sure push Gingerbread over to that phone. Who knows what Samsung will do with the Galaxy S then.
Fanboys need to stfu. You do realize many of us have buggy devices, and the fixes are being held up for froyo, right?
Dom't be idiots. Use your brains. The OS is a small issue right now. We want oir phones to work as advertised.
Yes, these buggy devices ARE complete and utter crap.

[Q] Froyo on the way?

I just read on Vibrant xda forum that Bhman/Eugene737 just posted a froyo rom on Vibrant yesterday.Does that mean Epic devs bout to have a port for us?
Check out the Vibrant xda section they have youtube video, rom gets 13 on Quadrant.
That would be ridiculous if it was made for the epic, the epic is vastly different from the other SGS phones

Let see, physical keyboard, front camera, flash, file system, CDMA radio (Vibrant has a GSM radio), 4G radio. Yeah not different at all.

Well they both have an AMOLED screen and the Hummingbird processor...
Even if you were to get the Vibrant rom running on the Epic (after taking into account the differences in the file system) the phone would still be unusable. The Vibrant uses a different radio for phone calls, and data (3 and 4 G). So it would be pretty much useless as a phone.

But then again... Who knows?
end of November.” now
Late last week, Samsung announced that the Froyo or Android 2.2 update would finally be coming to the Galaxy S smartphone this week.
It seems that this won’t be the case, however, as the firm has issued an update via its official Twitter channel.
Samsung tweeted: “The Froyo upgrade will be available in the UK from early November and we expect all operator versions to be available by the end of November.”
So, early November could mean two to three more weeks before it lands on Kies, the company’s own Windows based upgrade platform, with operators pushing it out after that. The cause of the delay is unknown.
The Froyo update will bring a number of new features to the very popular Galaxy S, including a speed boost, full Flash support and device tethering, along with Google Maps GPS navigation plus voice guidance.

That is Samsun'g official Twitter channel for the U.K. That timing corresponds to a new press release from Samsung for the U.K. The "all operators" referred to, quite obviously, are the telecom operators in that market.
The corresponinding Twitter site for the U.S. says there is no ETA yet.
And the earlier announcemetn you mentioned was also about overseas markets.

The OP didn't say we'll get Gingerbread in mid-May, he said Europe will get it in mid-May and we'll get it after them. That doesn't mean we'll get it in mid-May, or May at all.
Engadget phrased it better, though:
"The company has this morning released word that it intends to update its entire Galaxy S family line, starting with models in the UK and Nordic countries from the middle of this month. The rest of the globe, including North America, will follow suit "according to the regional plan."
Obviously, we have no idea what the "regional plan" is -- so there's no saying when we or any of the US carriers will actually see Gingerbread.

As far as I remember, the samsung dev team tried to unify the devices under froyo a lot more than they were under eclair. For eclair they had a team for each phone, then for froyo they had one tam for all phones. I can't remember where I read it, but maybe that fact will speed updates.

You also have to take into account that most of the Galaxy S lineup consists of the i9000 series (GSM). Once Europe is updated, the i9000 series on AT&T will probably be next.
There hasn't been any word for the i500 timeline yet.
Gotta remember, the Galaxy S is the i9000 we just have a variant. It would be nice if we got it on the i500 but I seriously doubt it, especially since it just said galaxy s not the galaxy s line. Which means fascinate, epic, vibrant and captivate were not mentioned in the press release. In fact they went out of their way to even mention specific models. "GALAXY Ace/Gio/Fit/mini"
I guess I'm being pessimistic seeing how we were treated over Android 2.2
Well I read in the article on android central it said Galaxy S line, where the press release from Samsung said galaxy s.
Another thing to remember is its being released by Samsung, we will still have to wait for VZW to get there hands on it, and bloat the hell out of it, before they release it. And im sure this is on the back burner for them at this point so I dont see an ota being pushed out anytime soon.

this is XDA! once the Devs get their hands on a leak we will have a few roms before any official 2.3 comes out. Much like most of us had 2.2 WELL before the official came out!

While that may be true, since most of the US Galaxy S variants have some form of bloatware, wouldn't that mean carriers tell Samsung what extras to add before it's finished?

American Galaxy S Devices To Get Update 2.3.x In Mid-July

http://www.youmobile.org/blogs/entr...date-Countries-Release-Status-Updating-Daily-
This article contains exactly whats going on for each country on the gingerbread update, and so far it has been correct for each Gingerbread release. It recently got updated saying the US versions of the Galaxy S devices will receive the update (doesn't specify if its 2.3.3 or 2.3.4) in mid-July. I suggest you bookmark this link to remain updated.
This link IS LEGIT with the release dates BECAUSE:
1. It's been accurate with other the other countries release dates.
2. The official Samsung Galaxy S facebook page said to follow that page for info on when your Galaxy S device will be able to update to Gingerbread.
that was confusing.... it list USA twice? must be talking about the i9000 unlocked in the US... and I'll take this whole thing with a grain of sand considering not a single leak for the the Vibrant has been found.
Not trying to steal the thread, but if T-Mobile doesn't upgrade the Vibrant is that grounds for a free upgrade to SGS 4G? Wonder if that would fly...

I don't buy any of the "official Samsung galaxy s facebook pages" to be official. All the Samsung fan pages look the same, except those for the Galaxy S.
Also, just because they have been right (actually, if you look in the comments, they weren't always 100% right) doesn't mean they will always be right.
I am not saying it is not true, I am just saying I think without official word from something better than a link from facebook I am not holding my breath. Would be cool though.

Yeah, but the plain old Vibrant has not yet. I'm still a bit hopeful since there were no leaks before KB5 made an appearance on Kies. Maybe T-Mobile/Samsung found who was leaking the Vibrant code and put a stop to it.
My 2 cents. If Froyo is an indication of what to expect we will see 2.3.3 which will be a step down from what we've already ported 2.3.4. No US carrier even saw a 2.2.1 build and the rest of the world had that just weeks after we got 2.2.

and the firmware version "will" be I9000XXJVU
That firmware is already available in the xda-developers forum for some time now
Now that we tested it, it's going to be released to the general public.
last update
Will this be the last update for S
will it be the last update?
Sure?
last for sgs and sgs+?

Yes.
Galaxy S, in the eyes on Samsung, has fulfilled his purpose.
But in XDA eyes, it still has a lot to offer!
If you are too afraid to flash an ICS rom on it, you should probably do yourself a favor and throw it to the trash can and buy an iPhone, that gives you plenty of features to afraid (and rich) people.

so you are saying this will be the final release xxjvu
hate u samsung.
Look at htc, Desire s n desire HD can update to ICS.
Obviously this value pack is going to be none other than the JVU that we've already seen here for ages. Nothing new and nothing special.
Who needs Samsung when you have the genius of xda devs!

The value pack is available for the SGS, and is a really cool firmware - possibly the best firmware until now from Samsung.
This is for the international version. Possibly a similar package for other regions and operators.
Since that ROM was leaked, no other leak for the i9000 for long time. I don't expect any other ROM for the SGS from Samsung.
There are some developers here working on the ICS for the SGS. At this point, the only think we're asking from Samsung is to release the source to support the continued development.
it is leaked for SGS only i think not SGS + as i m SGS+ user i didn't find that so it is new for me.there are also less roms for SGS+ and till now there is no ICS rom (unofficial) for SGS+ so for me its bad experience with samsung

You have to admit that Samsung's reasons are at some point legitimate... Come on, they are already working on galaxy s3 right now.... Now it's time to have the real fun with xda folks!

How 'bout SE phones? Arc, Neo and Mini line all have 512 mb of RAM yet are getting ICS with Sony skin and bloatware on top.
