Wifi Tether IPhone to Evo4g? - EVO 4G General

Ok. My flame suit is on. I'm starting a job with VZW. I'm keeping my Sprint line also, as it is an unlimited everything family plan and dirt cheap for me. I'm going to get an iPhone for my VZW line so I can be using and therefore able to speak about both operating systems. I don't need much mobile data with my VZW plan so I'm going with the lowest amount 2GB. In the event I need a little extra boost on my iPhone I am wondering if it is possible or if any one has tethered an iPhone to their Evo? I don't see why it wouldn't work but it is late and I'm tired.

Edit: Jesus, what a fu*kin noob move... This should be in QnA. I'm sorry, I shouldn't start reading the forums before I post. Ooo look, shiny metal object

Google search has failed me. But more likely I failed it.... All I can find is info on doing it the other way around Android to iPhone. I came across a thread about iPads tethered to Android so I'm going to assume this works. Any confirmation would be nice though.
Boo

Yes this is possible with a Rooted EVO. You can have the Hot Spot hack or WiFi Tether for root users. Both will turn your EVO into a WiFi hot spot which anything that has WiFi can connect to

Absolutely no problem. My office mates iPhone connects to my Evo just fine.

Kiosk in mall devoted to Evo??????

Sorry if this is old news, but I was in 2 malls this week doing some christmas shopping, and saw kiosks devoted ONLY to the Evo. There were about 6 Evos on display and 2 big evos like the iphones in the apple store. Funny thing was, one of them was setup right in-front of the apple store. Im sure that wasnt on accident! Go sprint!
PS, this was in Los Angeles Anyone else see these?
Is that the new EVO 4G Tablet on the side of the kiosk?

Saw these a couple months ago at Topanga Mall and Northridge Mall. It's one reason why I don't understand why the 42-inch nexus s is news worthy.

...because it just came out and is the headlining Android phone? Which brings me to my main point, does anyone think it's sad that the EVO is still Sprint's flagship phone? During the same time period:
a. Verizon had the Incredible, then the Droid X, Fascinate, Droid 2, and now the Droid Pro.
b. AT&T had the iPhone 4, Captivate, BB Torch, and now a slew of WP7 phones.
c. T-Mo had the MyTouch 3G slide, Vibrant, G2, MyTouch 4G, and now the Nexus S.
..and Sprint? The EVO and Epic. What's up with that? This isn't a which phone is better thing, just pointing out how much Sprint is lacking on the high end phone selection.
Since as a Premier member I can only upgrade every 12 monts, I'm cool with it.

Sprint's NEVER had the biggest phone selection. They offer a few fantastic phones and dirt cheap plans. Honestly though, I'd pick the Evo and the Epic over any Android phone out there right now though haha. The Nexus S would be the only one I'd consider, but not anywhere near enough to leave spring haha

T-Mo is arguably as cheap plus it's HSPA+ is free. With them you got the options of: the Vibrant (it's SGS variant but is "meh"), G2 (Powerful and slick slider with Vanilla Android), MyTouch 4G (which is just about the/one of the best spec'd phones out), or the Nexus S (arguably the best phone out right now).
You could argue that you'll just upgrade every year in June but how is that a good thing? I mean, look at that Shift 4G thread where people are arguing on whether the EVO is still worth getting? It's 6 months old, I would feel extremely limited and not to mention shafted if I needed to get a high end Sprint phone right now.
I just think that Sprint has to step up with some more phones.

The thing is that they have both a bunch of bad ones and a bunch of good ones. Sprint has a few bad ones and a few good ones.

Yeah, but the EVO is still a stronger performing phone than most of the phones you listed there. Aside from the Droid Pro and Nexus S there isn't one phone there that would replace my EVO. Those WP7 phones aren't even a consideration imo....

The Droid Pro is trash IMO. I'd consider the Nexus S, iPhone 4, G2, and maybe (but probably not) a WP7 phone. It's all matter of preference but the fact is that you got more worthwhile phones to judge and I wish that was the case with Sprint.
And what does all this crap have to do with the original question about the kiosk?
Agreed! I sell phones and I am yet to come by an android phone as reliable, fast, and attractive as the Evo. Sprint's got a lock on phone quality. All the other android phones you mentioned dont measure up...except the Nexus S.

I sell more evos than any other phone, half the phones i sell are evos, the phone's over 6 months old, still crazy popular, and has hardware specs that other phones are just now finally beating. HTC did an awesome job with it, can't wait to see their next phone after the shift.

All carriers will help you with the cost of your ETF. Call and ask, it's Christmas season.
I rather walk in the sprint store and see a few great phones that will fit my needs... maybe like a front facing camera? Or a 4.3 inch screen? HDMI out? 10+mbps of data speed? A kick stand to kick back in the office and watch Hulu at full speed? Or play Need for Speed Shift while waiting for my girl? Maybe use Fring to video chat with her since she also has a front facing camera? Or how about getting on the XDA app and laugh at stupid posts people make regarding sprint and phones and trophys about tours..
Oh crap.. i just dropped my keys.. let me use my twin-led flashlight to find them...
I found them!!
Where was i?
I was jamming out... downloading music with Gtunes.. i can also use windows explorer/music/copy all... dragging and dropping the music files i need without connecting to itunes and syncing...
I just got a notification on my Sony Ericsson Live View... i can see my twitter replys without taking my evo out of my pocket...
Aww crap... i lost wifi signal at work, so did my co-workers... ill just turn on my Hotspot.. there.. me and my friends have full speed 4G signal on thier pcs via my internal router on my Evo...
Im gonna watch youtube... let me connect my HDMI enabled phone on my 42 inch tv...

Former Evo owners?

I have been debating with myself on whether or not to get a galaxy tab. I was wanting to hear from anybody who was a former Evo owner. Does the tab seem a lot bulkier than the Evo? Would you go back to the Evo if you had a chance? I have seen some belt clips for the tab. Does it feel comfortable or does it feel like you have a book glued to your hip.
Former Evo user here:
In terms of bulk, you'd be surprised to know the Tab is actually thinner than the Evo. Of course you'll be carrying a 7" device as opposed to a 4" device so that does take some getting used to. As a woman, I carry it in my purse so I can't actually answer your question on the holster since I don't use one.
I have completely moved from my Evo to the Tab- I downgraded my Evo plan which, with insurance and taxes less my discount, was around $85/month. I moved it down to the basic Talk 200 which is $29.99 and ported my new Tab number to it and switched my old Evo number to the Tab (keep in mind if you choose to do this, you'll need some old windows phone on the Talk 200 plan since the Evo can only have that Everything Data plan). I did the tweak in the development section and now make and receive calls on the Tab. That in addition to the 2GB data and unlimited texts on my plan leave me set in terms of an all-in-one mobile device.
Ultimately, I'm saving money now. My Tab plan is $29.99 plus the $29.99 for the Talk 200- without insurance, plus taxes and less my discount, I should be paying around $50 a month. While I do miss the Evo, no I wouldn't go back.
Thanks for the info. If I get a tab it will be to completely replace the Evo as I would be selling(i.e. "giving") it to my brother in law and he would use it on our plan instead of his intercept and I would be using the tab exclusively. He and I both have been disappointed with the Intercept that he has and he would like to get an Evo. The Evo I have allowed me to give up my pmp and just use the Evo. The tab would allow me to give up my Kindle as well and have a truly all in one device.
evo to tab adjustments
Just recently switched from an Evo to an AT&T GT. It definitely takes some getting used to if the Tab becomes your primary phone. I use a headset, but now I realize just how much I fiddle with my phone while I do other things.
As for the additional bulk--I pretend I'm carrying around a day organizer, and it feels less weird, other than the fact that I'm carrying my day organizer every time I get up to go somewhere.
I have been trying to read as much as I can in forums about it. Is this correct that the sprint version can be rooted but you cannot flash a recovery image to it?

That is an awesome plan! I have both the evo and tab from sprint. I would consider leaving the evo, but evo dev community here at xda is awesome plus I have 4g tether...
But still im really considering that option, hopefully sprint will do a material change on thier contracts
Out of curisity, which tweek method did you use?
I can only receive calls with sipdriod and csip. The line2 app wont connect anymore for some reason.
And have you measured your data useage per call?

I'm making calls using CSIP- it took me a looooooong time to get it to work. I kept encountering the error whereas I could receive calls but couldn't make calls. Don't know why. All I did was keep restarting the instructions over and over from the beginning until it finally started working.
That's a good question regarding data usage per call- if there is a way to measure usage per call please let me know and I can test is out. For the most part I'm always on a wireless network. When I leave a wireless network it bounces over to 3G data usage. I think I recall making one call via 3G and it was for 3 minutes so nothing really major. I just checked my data usage online- so far in the 2 weeks I had the plan, I've used 10mb of my 2GB.
While I miss the XDA community roms (was on Myn's ROM), can't really say I ever used 4G (and I live in a 4G area). 3G is good enough for me. HTH.

Just an FYI, but personally I would not give up my Kindle because of my Tab.
IMO, the Tab is great for occasional reading, but the Kindle's e-ink is vastly superior for extended reading.
Your mileage may vary of course, but I'd wait until you've had both in your hands for a few weeks before deciding to drop the Kindle.
Regards,
Dave
Current EVO and Verizon Galaxy Tab owner. My suggestion is to wait. A slew of new tablets (including the new Tab with dual core processor) are right around the corner. Rumors even say that the Moto Xoom is coming Feb. 17.

[Q] HTC Evo as a tablet only...

Hey there all, just like the title says, I am looking to see if anyone has used their HTC Evo as a tablet only, without having it activated through sprint, and have you had any issues just pulling a wifi signal.
A little background on this question is that my wife and I both have the HTC Evo. We have enjoyed our service with sprint very much.. However, we are expecting our first child and unfortunatley the pricy phone bill that goes with having 2 smartphones is going to be way out of our budget. That being said, we still have a land line, and of course will be using internet at home with a wireless connection.
Has anyone had any issues using just a wifi connection? I know that if you dont have the iphone activated through a plan, it is pretty much a paperweight. I wasnt sure if the Evo would be the same.
I guess if it doesn't work then we will have two very lightly used HTC Evo's for sale.

A deactivated EVO works just fine for gps, bluetooth, and wifi.
My brother does this exact thing, market, wifi and all work.
I believe if you drive around with gps on all you will see the blue arrow and no map. You might have to download a map and then it would work. I am not 100% sure but this what I have heard.

Sell one of your Evos on Ebay and buy a Nook Color. I bought one last night, rooted it, and put CM7 on it. It's awesome as a 7" Android tablet.
nook color has honey comb port yet? I thought of getting it for my mother, her evo doesn't have a big enough screen for her bad eyes

what will you do with it after its all over?

Just wondering what you guys are gonna do with your beloved evo after you have upgraded?
at the moment im looking into switching carriers to to lack of any cdma (at that sprint) towers in my area so my evo will be demoted to a voip phone using grooveip (actually it already has been so i can still use to to make calls) and keep my google voice intergration to have texts still come through. and other than that it will be a glorified mp3 player with its 32gb of storage .
so is it gonna be a paper weight or how are you gonna repurpose it
I will put it in a frame and hang it up in the living room LOL

donate it to a dev in EVO forum.
I will be adopting mine into a new and loving family, where I believe it will continue a long and happy life, flashing and re-flashing and getting new mods... *sigh* they grow up so fast...
Since my wife will continue to use her OG, I'll be keeping mine as a backup.
In fact, I probably won't even be using my new LTE device at all until after LTE rolls out in my area. Since I have such good 4G where I live and travel, I think I'll just continue to keep my OG activated, and use the LTEVO as a Wi-Fi only device until I can get LTE on it. And hopefully, until it's fully unlockable.

I'm actually looking at doing the same thing since i'm going to be moving back to an area that sprint basically doesn't exist.I have been checking out Verizon phones but haven't found one that I would be 100% happy with. I had considered trading it in, but I decided I'm going to keep it for development purposes. I'm moving on to the LTEvo but can't imagine not having a ROM in the works for the OG. I think we are far from maxing out the potential of this device and it will remain a proving ground for up and coming developers.

groove ip uses your google voice number as a real phone number. such as i have set up the full voice intergration with my number so as long as i have a data connection or roaming data when im out i will get a phone call and of course if i turn data off it will just revert back to the standard method of phone calls but as i said i have zero signal at the house so it allows calls over wifi like some gsm carriers can do and other things like skype and what not but without having to give a diff number out.

Been with them for 12years and had the same number. Trying to move to another carrier. It sucks because they only gave me till next week to port my number or I LOSE IT. Looks like I'm going to get a rinky dink phone until I can get a upgrade. Going to miss my Evo This number is on everything so I must do it. My business will suffer if I don't get this number.
I was up in arms but I am a firm believer in karma and I did tether and got caught so WTF am I going to do. In the letter it said you are "using it as a modem and tethering with out a tethering plan".
Just wanted to ask, can they really tell, or is it just data usage they are going by.
do you mind me asking what ROM and what tethering app you were using?
Sorry man, that totally blows. How much data did you blow through? I remember people getting letters after going through a few hundred Gigs a month.
Been tethering my EVO's for a couple years. First my EVO 4g with my laptop, now my "retired" 4g with my EVO 3d. I watch netflix and surf the web on my 4g. No problems yet. So...just how much data have you been using?

I'm using Derp 3d and I'm using wireless tether for root. In March I used 109gb and in April I used like 102gb. I use Hulu plus and I think thats the's reason. I've been doing it for 2 years with netflix, my pc and video games but just got hulu 3 months ago, and now this. SMH.
Most users don't use that much on a cable/dsl connection, let alone wireless.
I'd agree with sprint, that is excessive.
Just get the cheapest prepaid setup you can find until you figure out where you're going to move to.

Yea, that sucks. You were terminated more for the excessive data use than for tethering. Everyone who I know of who had their contracts cancelled for tethering were also using large amounts of data. They likely would have got you even if you were paying for it, as were many of them. They just used the tethering excuse to try and make an example.

"can they tell?" interesting question... Did you use HTC DEV to root your phone and can Sprint track downloaded apps (wireless tether) from the market? They could probably track those and put 2 and 2 together.
your data usage is very high and noticeable.

That is why you got cancelled. Is that all 4g data? Because if it is 3G, even at 1MB, it would take you 12 days of constant downloading to get to 109GB of data.

I used unrevoked when it was first available, and I didn't download it off the market. I agree it was excessive. Probably why I'm not too upset more concerned with my number I guess.

That's what I'm planning to do thanks. Just found out I can port my number to prepaid then to another carrier. Someone just gave me a net10 phone. Funny compared to my Evo but got to do what I got to do for now. I was just about to get the 4g lte too, but was waiting for it to be rooted LMAO!!
Wish I had 4G

As said above that is really excessive so most likely it's not more of a They found out but more of a Using Way to much data and so they cut off your data.. Now as how they found out.. Most likely they assumed that its basically impossible to use that much data on a Phone no matter how hard you try.. But most likely it's labeled "illegal tethering" For the fact that if you have unlimited data then they have no real reason to cancel your contract other than for illegal tethering if you don't have tethering on your contract.

If I can figure out from your few posts here that your real name is EDITED TO PROTECT PRIVACY and you're from EDITED AGAIN TO PROTECT PRIVACY, I don't see why sprint couldn't figure out that you're tethering. Thing is, I tether too, but I keep my usage below 5 Gigs a month, so no red flags are never raised, hence no investigations.
MOD EDIT: PLEASE DO NOT REVEAL PERSONAL INFO, amd even less if it not yours

And what does any of that **** have to do with if they can see me tethering or not. Ain't like I'm posting **** on Facebook....hey I'm tethering on my evo illegally. Like dude said above I think it's just the data issue but they can't say that, because I have unlimited data.

Unlimited Data is not "Unlimited Everything"
According to your Sprint terms and conditions, you have unlimited email, pictures, internet surfing and messaging, as well as NON-CONTINUOUS streaming of videos, downloading, and online gaming.

LMAO I know.
To Tell the truth it's illegal and I did it, not much I can say or am going to say. My girlfriend is a lawyer and asked if I wanted to go that route. No because I feel stupid trying to fight something I did although I get free legal service it seems like a waste of time.
Am I pissed I got no more free internet....hell yeah LOL what do you think. I'm not rich but not hurting for money either, so in hind sight it seems not worth it lol. I guess with Hulu wither I paid for the hotspot service or not it wouldn't have made much of a difference. Tommorrow I'm getting 4g unlimited internet from clear which is probably what I should have done in the first place.
