Hi,
as much as I would like a custom ROM and all it's nicities and upgrades, I'm always concerned that a new version comes out every couple of days, meaning that we have to go through the upgrade process again, install our apps etc.
so, in an attempt to counter this, is there a table anywhere that lists the ROMs, their versions, their bug count (even a user rating perhaps) that would help keep people informed of what ROM might suit them?
Yes I know that each ROM has it's thread, but at 60 or 70 pages, it's difficult to understand and follow since a lot of the comments don't actually realte to the version that is now available.
so, I'm proposing a much simpler method of tracking versions and helping people to understand what works and what doesn't.
any thoughts?
No rom builder would go for that. They like to protect what they have invested much time and effort in and want to keep all comments, negative or positive in their respective threads so that there is no hate or smear campaigns spread about their roms all over the place.
Even a mention of any issues in a rom (greyed out options, sound bugs, multiple resets needed etc.) appearing in another thread is frowned upon.
Direct comparisons in one thread is not considered constructive.
However, I do hope that enough think it might work.
Perhaps integrate it into another cataolguing project?
and I understand the need to protect what the Chefs have spent their time on, so I'm not proposing a slagging off of any ROM,
but there are going to be people (like me for example) that would like to know in which areas of the ROM bugs exists.
some people might think that a bug in the Sense screen isn't important (I don't use sense and have it turned off), but a bug in Activesync is (vital for me that this works correctly and reliably). and it would help those people see the ROM that is best for them. The alternative, is for them to flash a ROM, find out that it doesn't work for them , and then complain.
Just thought it would be nicer for people to admit where their ROM fails upfront is all.
And if you make it in a chart, that only the Chefs can edit, there is no opportunity for others to slag off the ROM, but a chance for peope to see at a glance which ROM will be best for them.

Hey guys, hoping you guys can give some insight to a noob on this. I am looking to install a good rom on my phone. I'm leaning how to do this, but what I am looking for is speed and functionality. Themes are not that important, but would be cool. I do have the DK28 and is rooted, so I might need a good video to show me how to rom this phone properly. But as far as rom's go, I'm looking for one that is a really good rom.

Welcome to Rooting your phone. As far as the best ROM? There is no one best ROM, everyone has a different preference and outlook on speed. Any of the latest EXT4 ROMs will probably suit you though. Here is a link that will help you pretty much with everything you need:

The fun part is thanks to nandroid backups you can try out a ton of roms (I flash a new one every couple of days, now I'm back at dl18 playing the waiting game)
From what i've seen most roms share all of the major fixes and use similar tweaks and optimizations that they borrow from other devs... and the only notable difference i've seen between them is theme and how much they include in the rom extras wise (apps, live wallpapers, etc).
Viper rom has a lot of updates but I wasnt too much of a fan of the overall look of it
Mammons bonsai rom is lovely and I <3 it
Midnight Rom is excellent too and one of the best themes in my opinion, though if i remember correctly he does away with Twiz launcher and uses launcher pro(could be mistaken though i'm really tired and have used too many roms)
Epic Experience was the first rom that I flashed and works great, but I was mainly playing with the others lately since they have more frequent updates
Quantum Rom - daemon is brilliant and am looking forward to his next release
Supernova - I did try it out but I honestly don't remember what features it had
Nebula - Tried this out too, supposed to be more stable/straight forward rom for stable professional people who dont want inflated quadrant scores or flashy live wallpapers (I might be quoting a different rom, if so i apologize)
Syndicate Rom - Awesome as well but its not for dk28 xD
Overall all the roms are amazing the only differences REALLY notable to me is that some use AOSP lockscreen by default, some use TWiz lock/launcher, some use ADW... launcher pro... but all of that is changeable with a flashable zip/apk...I tend to prefer mammon and quantum rom nowadays since iirc mammon made the call log fix and gps fix and daemon is doing all this ext4/cwm work and they seem to be leading up the race with innovation and knowledge (not saying others arent knowledgeable... i know nothing of developing i'm just guessing here)
EDIT: forgot to mention, only reason im not on dk28 right now is that personally I have minor bugs with it such as the one where you call somebody and it doesnt ring or make any sound but it actually calls them, and some other minor issues. I figured i'd wait for official froyo to drop and continue testing out roms when I get bored
Oh and theres also cyanogen mod which is sexy and amazing but is prebeta and buggy (signal bars not working, MMS is broken, etc)
Although I agree that he could have been nicer about it, these posts absolutely do not belong in the development forum. Questions about "which rom is best for me?" Definitely belong in general. The reason some people (myself included) aren't often very nice about it is becase it is increasingly becoming a problem. The op really should take the time to read the stickies before cluttering up the dev forum. Everyone should.
Also, calling someone a jackass- even if they are being one- almost never shows them the error of their ways.

It is best to get titanium backup (from the market) that way u can back up your apps and you can use Backup to Gmail (also from the market) to backup contacts, call log, and messages. That makes flashing different roms a lot easier. (In my opinion)

Aside from titanium (which i never really used much, guess I should try it out as it can make backups every night while you sleep if you set it to)
You can also make a NANDroid backup via rom manager//clockwork mod which when you restore will restore everything down to cache to be the same. same texts in your inbox even xD.
EDIT: Also if you have your phone linked to a google account when you go through the setup wizard (on some roms) it auto downloads the apps you had installed before from the market as well as contacts, etc. But if you want an instant restore to the same settings/wifi/etc then I prefer nandroid (idk if titanium does all that I think it just backups apps)
also note that along with most roms you can customize them to your liking. you can change the boot animations (given they use a kernel that allows it... if the rom has a custom boot animation already it'd work by flashign one in CWM), theme, battery look, keyboard, launch options, lockscreen. You could always just get a not-flashy basic rom that incorporates the basic fixes that people want (faster gps lock/5mb mms/call log fix) and theme it all yourself in the themes and apps subforum. The gingerbread theme is nice and nova has a list of boot animations and battery mods in his supernova rom page :3. If you're interested in that I'd say go for epic experience as I'm partial to it and he includes an "extras" page with downloads to all that hes removed such as the live wallpapers, samsung widgets, etc.

I don't know if you are referring to MODS, as those coders/hackers that MODify Android, or if you are looking for MODifications to android.
Either way, you are asking for one helluva long ass list if you think one exists.
There are literally thousands of MODifications you can do to an android device.

and i did google it. especially 'blacky', about which i heard some time ago.
but i could not find anything. when i google 'android mod' 90% of the results
are about cyanogenmod. the rest is something totally different.
and i think if you would take just the notable (means with a certain amount
of developer activity) roms/mods, the list would not be too long.

It is clear that custom roms are new to you. I only recently flashed my first custom rom but I think I can be more helpful than some people are choosing to be.
I wouldnt get a rom from google. You dont really know its source and often have no one to contact about issues/suggestions. I think the safest option if to go to the subforum on this site that is specific for your phone. Then click on Android Development Forum. In there you will probably have threads for all the major roms such as CyanogenMod, Revolution, LeeDroid, CoreDroid. These are all being constantly improved and you can also report bugs to help future development. Best advantage is they usually have specific instructions for that rom.

There's too many ROMs to choose from here, it's kind of a pain in the ass really LOL.
What I want is the stock ROM with advanced power controls, and battery % in the status bar and the ability to change the DPI to make more use of the screen real estate. Maybe a kernel that improves battery life as well. I like things simple that work, not a lot of tweaks.
Can someone point me to a ROM like this? Would be much appreciated.

These threads aren't allowed as you have to try them yourself unfortunately...
Seems like as a community, we should start a spreadsheet or grid of what roms do/have what, updated by each developer, etc.
Telling someone "you have to try each one" seems kind of irresponsible, and would take days, possibly weeks to backup, install, restore, test functionality for a day or so, move on.
That's just the way it is. There's a poll in the general section about what ROMs people are using, and it doesn't take a genius to read the OP of a ROM and figure out whether it's full of features or very clean and simple. Nobody can recommend a ROM because it's a completely subjective question. It's like asking someone 'what's the best colour' or 'what's the best type of food'. If you can give me a definitive answer to either of those questions then I'll happily answer your question (in other words, your question cannot be answered).
What ^^^this^^^ RC posted. And to add there are too many variables involved from one User to another User...just take your time and Test the ROMs out, and since there are so many to chose from...Enjoy!

This rom is now available. I found it during a system-wide search on android file host. Its a new release. I have not tested it, but after testing the Xperia Z5 rom in an earlier post, I'd like to see someone else give this one a shot.
There's rom's out there guys, that we haven't seen on the boards. Lets find them, test them, and get them posted!! The moto community will be grateful! I'm assuming this xperia z5 rom is going to be a huge hit on here.
Once again, I'm new here, thus I can't post links yet. But go to android file host, search osprey and you'll find both the Xperia Z5 and the AOKP.
Those familiar with AOKP/AOSP will probably love this new rom!

No, its not for me. Its too vanilla. Basically an AOSP with a few tricks. Its about a 315mb rom when packed. This is a good rom for someone looking to make a "custom" rom themselves using xposed, gravitybox, etc. Nothing more, nothing less.
So I answered your question, and honestly. Your turn:
If I made a nice thread, with a visually pleasing post, some github links, thanked squid for his kernel that I used, gave a few step by step instructions on how to install it, and a fancy little change log......... maybe a gif of a dancing baby. Would that'd be enough for you to click on it? Keep in mind, its the same file I just posted above.... but you're going to download it now that its 'described' and has 'screenshots'. LOL You're about a rom away from a total brick dude. I guess what I'm saying is, what do you look for when you install a new rom? If you're not testing it before you install it, reviewing its code, etc... then you're just going on the words of someone else. BE smart. Try before you buy.

I just know, that I tested it on my linux VM..... then my Moto G3..... it boots, it works, and I haven't found any security issues with it.
Stick to your 'safe' custom rom. I'll stick to mine. Just trying to expose people to more roms. Nothing more, nothing less.

You stated in your first post that you found it but had not tested it, so no, no one would want to test it from that. As for this post, I'm not sure what to make of that rambling, partly incoherent post.

At the moment I found it, I was testing the Xperia z5-g3 rom that I had found. A little later, I tested the AOKP that this thread is based upon. I apologize that I wrote my last post in a way that is difficult to understand for some people (you). But I'll try typing a little slower, for those who read a little slower.
So a brief recap for the reading impaired:
-Yes, I downloaded it.
-Yes, I tested it.
-No, I didn't really like it. Its a vanilla based rom, meant for customization by the end user using xposed and gravity box.
-It is a rather small build, about 315mb downloaded and about 900mb installed.
-I haven't found any rom breaking bugs, but again, I only tested it for about an hour before deciding it wasn't for me. But in all honesty, I knew it wasn't, as I had used AOKP and AOSP rom's in the past. I was merely testing it, so that those who are scared to do so -- would feel better about it.
Here's what I don't understand. Every week someone posts a new project, whether it be a kernel or rom. And every week, it is usually untested until they ask for volunteers. Sometimes the post will even go as far as saying that the it was developed without access to a moto g3, hence the developer themselves hadn't even tested it. Yet, with each new and untested project, person after person says "I'll test it!", "Sign me up!", "Ready when you are!!"
If testing a unknown rom isn't for you, then do us a favor... move on. Just curious though, what rom/kernel do you use? If you're running anything other than stock, then you took a chance when you installed it. The difference however, is that the OP made a 'pretty' and 'informative' initial post that caught your eye like a shiny object. If the same file that I mentioned in the original post, had specs, some graphics, and a few visually pleasing edits..... it wouldn't change anything about the file. It'd just change YOU, and YOUR mind.
So again, why do you trust ANYONE on here? Now... move on.
Interesting... I thought AOKP kind of folded a year or two ago, there haven't been any "official" builds since 2014. The Moto G is not listed as a supported device on their site, any generation of it, must be someones private port.

I trust people with a high *thanks* rating, So if Squid or lost101 asks me to test something I don't expect that they want to brick my device. And please this is still Xda the place for the nice people .

However its not booting on my xt1550 stuck @Moto logo
I flashed @squid2's kernel and it booted but my setup wizard kept fcing
So unable to use the ROM..
