Hello all,
I am about to buy an A500, but I do worry a lot about its smoothness.
All I could see, using upto 3.2 honeycomb, was not smooth enough for me.
So I checked Youtube to search for demos of A500 running ICS, and still, it was not smooth enough for me. But on one video I could see that "Force GPU rendering" was not enabled in the parametters of ICS.
So can someone please answer this question : do current ICS custom roms support GPU rendering or not ?
If the answer is "no", then it would explain why what I saw on youtube (A500 running ICS) wasn't smooth enough for me ...
Thanks !

Hi,
I´ve read that ICS has GPU acceleration for the UI implemented as a standard. Is there really a difference in smoothness compared to custom gb roms? I´m talking about the i9001. But it should be the same as with the i9000

Can't tell the difference.
I'm on RemICS v1.2 with Devil Kernel 3.0.72. I set GPU from stock 200MHz to OC at 250MHz and I can't tell the difference. But the Kernel developer did say it may not work. Still experimental.
Afaik no big difference, although our GPU is powerful. Maybe stock ROM has other imorovements, so the boost isn't good to feel on ICS.

GPU OC isn't same as GPU accelerated UI
And yes ICS should benefit from it..but can't really remember anyone GB times if there has been some speed gain..

Yeah it does, but i reckon that ICS is really unpolished with it.
Running slim with the latest semaphore and I can definitely say this is the slickest my phone has been, but that is just my opinion

There are apks that use the gpu. In custom roms i saw that this is true on i9001
The stock browser in 2.3.6 uses GPU acceleration. There are other apps also, but not the OS UI.
In 4.0 custom rom it should work in the apps when you enable the option from the developer options.
No difference. Everything using 8 mb more ram with 200mhz GPU acceleration.

Bro, just upgraded my i9000 to ice and forced gpu acceleration.
Man even on the xda app itself I can see a marginal difference in smoothness.

it has an option force gpu rendering that uses 2d hardware acceleration in applications...and you have to set it manual...but dont know if it rly helps in smoothness i think it depends more on the rom then to have this gpu option

Because it's cyanogen. You can see it's even faster on cm7.

I see an awful lot of people saying it offers no improvements. Personally, I think it does.
I keep my phone up to date as much as possible. When ICS was stable, I jumped right in. I haven't ran Gingerbread in a long, long time—but from what I remember, it had some lag. Android, in fact, was known for this lag. You couldn't read an iOS vs Android debate without this lag being mentioned (at least when Gingerbread was the newest). And I had tried everything: every lag fix, every tweak, every ROM, every kernel, governer, scheduler, OCing, UVing—I tried it all. But I still remember there being lag.
Now I'm in the present. I've been running ICS since it was stable and, quite frankly, I don't notice that lag. I mean, yes, my phone does still lag—if I'm doing something processor intensive in the background—but not like my memories of Gingerbread. Back then, it would lag scrolling through my list of apps; it would lag doing menial UI rendering without anything running in the background. That simply does not happen anymore. Not in my experiences. Not with ICS.
Granted, as I did in Gingbread, I do in ICS—I've applied every fix, every tweak, and every possible software combination that I could get my hands on. I've tried every ROM, every kernel, every setting imaginable. And I do this because I've been thoroughly impressed by the community here at XDA. This device of ours is over 2 years old now. But the software progression does not stop. We move forward as if the hardware was built just yesterday. And I have to tell you, our phone is keeping up—it really is. My phone is faster than a lot of my peers, even with some of them having much newer hardware. And I honestly don't feel I could have said any of this if I had stayed far behind with Gingerbread.
Everyone wants a new phone. It's newer, better, faster. But what they don't realize is that software can fulfill a majority of their wants. It is a continuous improvement, however gradual it may be. To not want to upgrade your software is like not wanting to upgrade your phone. And let's be honest, who doesn't want a new phone—one that's newer, better, and faster—without ever having to buy one.
I do. And that's why I update my phone. But maybe that's just me.
Hi all
i used a lot of ICS roms here but it seemed to be bad in gameing and not fast as the GB ..
Is this the problem of ICS ????
when I use GB i play a heavy games with no problem , but in ICS it is laggy and i need to overclock the cpu to play .. even though still laggy ..
also in the performance , i see the GB is much better and smooth than ICS ..
I am now back to GB but I missed the ICS ..
It will be better if there is a hyberd rom that is contain GB and ICS togather ..
so in your opinion : what is the problem ??
is it from ICS ?? or the arc is weak to get good ICS ???
Neither the arc, nor the arc s is too weak.
Let's take my HTC Wildfire S as instance:
600 MHz SC CPU
512 MB RAM (400 useable, btw this is more than on arc (s))
CM9 runs perfectly smoothly. Also the new xperia lineup has 800 MHz phones which have the new timescape gui and ICS.
I think the problem are insufficient drivers or just a *****y programming with memleaks.
The amount of free RAM is also a reason.
everyone has their own definition of what is smooth. as for me, i define it as:
1. Fling of homescreens and applications on stock launcher is solid iPhone-like even with widgets on a non-live wallpaper. The smoothness that would not let you think of Jelly Bean at all.
2. Basic applications critical for phone use like Contacts, Messaging, Browser should also be as smooth as number 1 above.
3. Temple Run Brave while in the gameplay, no lost frames and instant response on swipes. Reason is not for gaming, but means the phone will behave smoothly on heavy processing.
Since everyone has different opinion on smoothness, nobody can tell that their phone is smoothest.
What I can say though is that on any ICS ROM I have tried, nothing meets my 3 criteria above. Hence I stick with Gingerbread.
I am critical and allergic to laggy interface / phone. Destroys the experience, makes you insecure of other phones.
I installed "Jellybread" by omenHTX today and it's great Gingerbread Stuff! You should give it a shot
After so many bad experiences with ICS I am really glad someone focused on GB again
Greetings!

I was thinking about it and I think the problem is from Sony itself
maybe they give us a garbage update to feel that our phone is outdated to Chang it ..
UI Smoothness is more than acceptable on Arconium ICS but the phone is simply just too slow in the performance department, so it lags a lot - on both ICS and GB. Stock GB was just a small tad faster than Arconium ICS and significantly faster than stock ICS.
The biggest difference was the animation smoothness though, because the phone lacks performance under GB too - the processor runs at 100% for a few seconds until it launches some heavier apps, and with ICS even basic apps like youtube became heavy.

so i think the problem is from ics
I have a question mainly for developpers.
Playing around with severals ICS CM9 ROMS, I noticed big differences in Antutu RAM benchmark score.
A first family of ROM reach 330 in RAM score (CM9 nightlies, ...)
A second family of ROM reach 530 in RAM score (CM9ight,iCyanogen).
This is a huge difference.
I've done some tests, and the difference don't come from kernel, from build.prop, from framework.
So the question is : from what does it come ?... some libs ?...
Thank you to developpers that read me ... any ideas ???
As a user and not developer, there is no problem with consuming more RAM.... as long as the Rom... is ruining smooth and fast...
Jelly bean uses even more RAM than ICS

Our Atrix is simply a way better with ICS or JB
It's fast is beautiful and has some kind of fixes and features
I found something curious with the flashlight
On GB ROMs and CM9,CM10 "old libs", when you turn on flashlight it takes like a second to turn, and I remember that when the flashlight is on CPU locks at it's maximum frequency........ Buuuuuut when this new kernel or libs or whatever, first, the flashlight turns instantly when you click on the torch shortcut, the other thing is that the frequencies stay scaling normal
Aside of all of this CM10 is just amazing
We have features like video recording with live autofocus and good fps even 1080p
Hw acceleration is just flawless, Atrix is just a new phone, I always hated the lag in the scrolling, even the Lockscreen, Gingerbread has a lot of lag, Atrix doesn’t seems to be a dual core when has GB
Other thing is that the screens seems to be more responsive
Motorola should update the Atrix, but....
Well I hope the community fixes the battery drain that until today we have on the ROMs based on the new kernel libs
Have a good day
Everybody =)
well
I have Neutrino 2.9EE ROM. It's GB, even power saving kernel with max 1Ghz and it's fast without any lag. Anyway, I'm not sure, if HWA really works in ICS/JB how it should work, so I don't believe, we have any atrix 4g with really properly using dual-core and HWA at once (because of the first one in GB and lag of drivers in ICS). I hope, I'm wrong...

HWA works properly in the ICS leak. It's obvious and even on quadrant, the 2d test scores 60fps (so do the other tests apart from the DNA one, which gets 50fps). There is a big problem with battery drain and (for some people) screen tearing. Also some little problems with frequencies getting stuck and also screen shaking on wake. Everything is else is great.
I saw people talking it should work, but haven't seen any experiences with really properly working HWA. Was the score in benchmark similar to GB roms? And btw, I'm just curious, are tegra 2 apps working with HWA on ICS/JB? Thx.

Yes my friend, everything work very well, i'll do a video ,so you can see some of the "new libs" features
Hello there, community!
This is my first post on xda forums and I will try to make it quick.
I'm looking for a fast ROM that will run smoothly sacrificing more unneeded features and options. I found stock 4.0.3 rom stuttering and lagging from time to time, even in Contacts section.
With no work in the background, my LG has around 80-100 RAM left, which I'd like to increase. I also plan on running some more advanced 3d games, so a little overclock would also be nice - I know this CPU is already oc'd from 800 to 1000 mhz but maybe it's worth trying to push it a bit more and take the weight off by disabling CPU rendering in favor of the GPU (I mean this great performance boost everyone is talking about when you force GPU rendering). If it works the way I think and with the GPU taking care of all the rendering, maybe processor won't heat so much and could be overclocked above 1 Ghz. What do you guys think?
In short, I'm looking for a fast ROM with a gaming and overclocking potential. Thanks in advance for the replies!
I use Slimbean 4.1.2 and it's really smooth and fast!
It's also perfect for my gaming needs but I don't really know what games you're after though!
Give it a try, you will certainly like it!

Well, I'm looking for overall better performance. For example on this stock rom, in the game Galaxy on Fire sound and interface lags etc. I found it odd that some simple games like Jetpack Joyride often stutter during gameplay, but Rayman Jungle Run with much better sound and graphics runs smoothly.
I'll check the rom you mentioned. Any more sugestions?
You should give a try to PAC ROM 4.3.Even it has some bugs,I found it smoother than I thought. After it will become stable,it will be one of the best or even the best ROM as performances.
