If that is all you do, you won't prevent the OTA from being loaded.
A simple search would have found a number of threads like
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1451328
which provide solutions that appear to work.
Ive already seen that thread but i am planning to root with burritoroot 3 so i was wondering if the next ota from amazon would brick my device since i will have the custom bootloader
Bootloader != Protection. Many people with a rooted stock rom with TWRP and FireFireFire were updated with the OTA..
Removing the system file listed in the thread above works OR using some other rom like CM7, CM9 etc.. will then ignore it.
When the Kindle fire installs an OTA update, it also restores the stock boot loader. Whatever customer boot loader or recover program you have installed will get deleted, and you will lose root. It pretty much restores the device to stock.
I have never seen it brick the kindle, though. That shouldn't be possible.
The OTA is aimed at improving performance and security. It is not going to brick anything, but you will be back to stock with no root.
As said before, OTA updates aren't likely to brick your device. Even if it does, you should have no problem returning/getting a replacement.

Anyone tried and confirmed working the old adb backup method that doesn't require root?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420351
Was hoping to use this method to backup before unlocking. I got into the usual problem of not wanting to unlock right away (in case issues etc.) then once I was comfortable with the unit too lazy to want to set up all up again from scratch....
Use helium. Backup each app individually. There are some apps that will Bork restore.

bummer screw that for a joke then LOL
it will be awhile before I unlock as I'm waiting for the next OTA to deal with the multitouch/gps etc. (hopefully!) I'm hoping it includes some firmware fixes too that we may not be able to flash like a normal ROM.

Unlocking doesn't prevent you from getting the OTAs.
If you want root to be compatible with OTAs, see this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44597339#post44597339
yeah I know that, I know I can reflash stock recovery and unroot etc. just too lazy to be bothered setting up all my apps losing saves etc. at this point short of mucking around with carbon. TBH if the multitouch issue is fixed or at least toned down there's not a lot of incentive to root for me aside from adblock.
I've got a hunch that the next OTA will involve firmware etc. so just reluctant to tinker until the stock base is 100%. Its not directly applicable as its a Nexus but in the past some other components e.g. HTC hboot, Moto (forgot the name) would get in the way of OTA if you unlocked the BL early.

My point is you don't need to unroot nor flash stock recovery (though it is safest to flash stock recovery)
The JSS15J OTA update will flash fine with root and twrp with just the small fix I referenced.

JSS15J already included firmware updates, it updated aboot, sbl, tz, and rpm. Bootloader went from 3.05 to 3.14 and it flashed ok with root and twrp (though again, personally I suggest using stock recovery)
Also you don't need to install twrp persistently to root. I just boot into twrp one-time by using fastboot boot twrp.img to install the root files and leave stock recovery on the tablet.
With the one simple fix referenced above, you can have stock recovery, root, and be totally compatible with future OTAs, no need to revert anything. Of course after the OTA is successful, just re-run the SuperSU zip and the fix to set yourself up with root and await the next OTA.
On this nexus, you need to unlock even to do the official factory restore google published. The official images don't come with signatures.
To answer the question re adb bu, yes it works just fine.

I have a rooted (no CWM changed) and unlocked Nexus 4 with JB 4.3.
I did not get the OTA yet and I wondered if it is because the phone is rooted. In addition, I read some problems with people who tried to update to 4.4 with rooted phones and are getting infinite bootloops.
Do I have to unroot my 4.3 for getting the OTA and achieving a successful installation?
Thank you all on advance

Why do you need OTA update when you can get the stock ROM in flashable zip file? All features are remain the same for stock ROM. Search and download it in the Development sections.

I am rooted and received the OTA notification yesterday. You 'SHOULD' be able to install if ALL you did was root. However, if you applied any mods that made changes to the system, the OTA will fail.

This is your best bet if you want to run 4.4. You'll need to install a custom recovery to flash the zip files. All the files and instructions are here:

Did you read the linked post?
First step after installing custom recovery is to wipe data/factory reset, so yes, you will lose your settings.

What I would like is to update to kitkat without losing my data.
I have the bootloader unlocked and the phone rooted, but when I go to recovery mode I get "No command" screen (is that normal?).
I was thinking of getting the phone unrooted, then update through the OTA, then root it again, just for making sure I don't break anything, but the "No command" screen does not look very good...
On the other hand, Would I lose my data if I "unroot" the phone?

To unroot, all you need to do is go into SuperSu, disable root, uninstall the app and then reboot the phone.
If all you have done is root the phone, and didn't modify anything else, then the OTA update 'SHOULD' install without a problem.
You can go to Android Police and download the OTA files and flash them via ADB, or you can just wait for the OTA to be pushed to your device.
If you decide to do it the manual way, there is one additional step you must take to ensure to keep your data I believe.

Thank you for your help gbarayah, I really appreciate it.
One last thing: I'm not pretty sure the only thing I modified was the rooting. I did not install any zip to modify my stock version, but there is something weird. I will explain:
At first I had 4.2.2, then I rooted and installed CWM. When 4.3 was released I got the OTA update correctly but I lost the root, so I rooted it again, this time without CWM.
Is the "No command" screen what is supposed to appear when I go to the recovery mode from fastboot menu? Or I would get a default recovery mode program?
If everything is right I will unroot for getting the OTA, but if not, I'm afraid I will have to flash CWM and the stock version, loosing my settings...
EDIT: Ok, I've just realized to get into stock system recovery I have to press VolUp and Power buttons once I'm in the 'No Command' screen, so I'm pretty sure I don't have problems installing the OTA update. Thank You!!!

Glad I could help. In the future, as long as you don't modify the system by flashing any modifications, you should be able to get the OTA update to install. Root doesn't affect this, and if you're worried about it, you can always uninstall it.
I opted to update using the stock zip files that were posted above and it worked just fine for me.
I used Google's batch file on windows to flash the stock 5.0, having unlocked the bootloader and also installed the chainfire root. Just wondering whether I'll get any fixes, or whether i'll have to always repeat this process, wiping out everything on the device in the process.
You may get prompted to download and install new updates when they arrive, but they will fail upon installation unless you're 100% stock.
there will be an OTA update notification if you have stock rom wether you have a sotck or a custom recovery. But if you download and install the OTA update having a custom recovery, the installation will fail and will show an installation or update error. You will be stucked in "no command" image. so better restore your stock recovery as well before downloading any OTA updates..

Does the Google image download page (https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images) get updated as Lollipop gets updated? Or am I going to have to do OTA updates?
hmm.. im not sure which comes first.. but, if you want to get OTA, you'll have to wait for your device to get its turn for the notification to appear. The effect will still be the same though if you flash that google image to your device.. And flashing that device, will save you time from waiting for your OTA to appear on your device.
Cheers! :good:

Well, I'm a bit confused. I'm on stock, but i need root, so i installed cfar, which I think included super su. when a new version of super su came out (i was alerted via google play), i needed to install the twrp recovery (which I didn't have installed at that point) to update it. So I guess I'm not stock any more, even though I've not actually put a non-stock image on. So even if the OTA update message popped up, I doubt it's safe to install it that way, even if it let me. I'm just not sure whether I need to a factory reset/wipe etc before updating, or if I can do a dirty update (the OTA is effectively a dirty update, isn't it?). And, like i said, i'm not sure whether that page gets updated with new images, or whether you're supposed to just put the initial one down and then do OTA updates (and only then root, change the recovery etc).
You have a stock rom but with a CUSTOM recovery. Yes, ota will prompt you to update, but DON'T. You should convert to stock recovery first. Because if you do, the update will push through, but once it asks you to boot to make the update in effect, you will have a NO COMMAND error - bootloop, and only fastboot and recovery (sort of dysfunctional). Just like most of the people here, including me. So make backup of your files first before doing the update. Cheers :good:

Hi, what i did was flashing the official factory image from google via fastboot/bootloader... Make a nandroid backup first though.. Because you'll need to clean flash (system partition/cache and data) to avoid future problems.
please educate me
A few weeks ago I rooted my N4 with CFAR (& of course had to wipe out everything). My understanding was that now that my bootloader is unlocked, I can sideload new images, thus sparing me a rewipe -- & in my ignorance, was anticipating that ChainFire would make 5.0.1 images in due course.
So, If I want to root subsequent 5.x.x releases, how would this work in real life??
Can i just restore stock recovery and then install the 5.0.1 ota update without losing everything?
I'm wondering how future updates will be handled on a factory sanctioned unlocked/rooted US996? I was on US99610f when I received the unlock .bin and "officially" unlocked/rooted my phone. Since I bought the US996 rather than the VS995 specifically for this feature I would think that I should still be eligible to receive future updates without losing root or Advanced Calling or any of my data. But caution tells me to disable future updates just in case. Any thoughts or actual knowledge on this subject?

once you unlocked you wont get updates with root and a custom recovery
you would either need to take the update zip and attempt to update using flashify witch will probably not work,
or have the full software pulled and a rom created to flash it over your current setup.
once you break the stock config, and add twrp you wont be able to take updates on any device,
removing su, busybox and fully unrooting, then adding your stock recovery back in theroy would allow a ota, but
id be shocked if you didnt get issues since the device flags itself as custom when you used that unlock.bin at the bootloader level and wont serve the updates. This may or not be the case, but with su and the rest on your device you wont be able to ota.
does your device qualify to be restored back to stock using the LGUP tool?
if so that would be the way to get back to stock, then take the ota, then re-unlock bootloader, re-flash the supersu zip and rebuild ur stuff

OK, thanks for the info. I was asking because I am still on the stock ROM and wasn't aware that having TWRP installed negated future update pushes by LG. Until I decide on a ROM that suits my needs I'll be on stock ver 10f it seems. What I really wanted from the unlock process was root. I have it now and am happy so will enjoy this phone as is until I see a ROM that interests me.
Recently I rooted my G5 plus and it worked really well for me. I didn't use SuperSU, instead, have Magisk installed. Unfortunately, now my phone isn't updating. What should I do to unroot it without much problem and without losing any data on my phone? And will it update if I unroot it?
It's a little more complicated than that... to bad there isn't a guide to doing it here somewhere... Hmmm....

Root is only part of the problem, TWRP is another big one.
OTA updates can only be installed on a purely stock device, the install script will check multiple things to verify the device is unmodified and in the correct state before applying, then it applies changes to specific files or partitions, they must be at a known starting condition before changes can be applied.
So, can you simply "unroot and install updates"? No, you must undo all changes to the device that are system related... Return the recovery, boot, and system partitions to their original state or any update will fail. Unrooting does not undo any changes, adds, or deletions you performed with root access, those actions are permanent.
Isn't there an easy way of unrooting? Sure, Magisk and SuperSU both have methods of removal, but that doesn't gain you what is needed to apply an OTA update.
I provided a link previously, that is what you need to do.

Thank you for this. I unlocked the bootloader, and installed TWRP and Magisk to gain root. This worked fine. However, I decided I wanted to go back to complete stock yesterday. So I uninstalled Magisk and flashed stock firmware using ADB. My phone is now unrooted, has a locked bootloader, and is running stock firmware which is what I wanted. Once I get the phone to boot, almost everything functions normally. However, it seems as though I now do not have any recovery whatsoever (and I assume that's because I did not specifically replace TWRP with stock recovery). So when I boot my phone, it goes to the bootloader and stops. If I then hit "start" on the bootloader, the ROM loads up normally after that. f that were the only issue, I could live with it. But not being able to get to recovery is concerning. And I am not able to get OTAs at the moment.
So, I'll check the other thread you mentioned. I assume I will need to flash stock recovery in order to get where I need to be.
Thank you for the post!
