Trialing the Sensation...Think I'll keep my N1!

Picked one up Saturday at Wal Mart knowing I'll have 14 days without penalty to see if it knocks my socks off...
Guess what? It's Tuesday, and I'm back using my N1.
Ya, the Sensation has some nice eye candy and naturally evolved features built in that currently require 3rd party apps on the N1, but it just didn't have that "Wow" factor for me.
Makes me proud to have a Sexy Nexy. It may be rare (I've yet to see another), a few years old and not as big as some of the others, but she's still got life, my friends!
The encouraging part for me, is the fact, I've yet to have the balls too root. So there's still a lot to look forward too for me.
You know what I'm gonna miss most about the Sensation? IT'S GOT TEETER!!haha, I'm serious. I love that little game.

wow if you returned to the n1, and on top of that you have not even rooted your n1, then wait till you actually root this thing! it becomes an entirely new device with a good ROM on it.

It's nice, it just seems like a nexus 1.3.

I just sold my MT4G after getting it to replace my semi-broken N1. Back to using the N1
I sold it because I wanted to get the Sensation, but now I'm not so sure after reading this thread and others in the MT4G and Sensation forums.
What to do? I cant rotate my screen or use camera with my broken proximity sensor, camera and led. so i am hurting and would like a new phone.
What would you guys do?

I tried replacing my N1 a few times before (MT4G, G2x) but they didn't quite cut it. The Mt4G just wasn't... better enough. I went through multiple G2x and none of them worked right.
I grabbed the Sensation and I am entirely happy with it. No issues so far after 2 weeks, and it does everything my N1 could do and more. Minus rooted things, which I do really miss. If I could just get SetCPU on the Sensation like my N1 I'm sure I'd have amazing battery life.

I had the Sensation for about a week, but just returned it today. Each device had one minor issue, which was just enough for me to go back to the Nexus. The performance increase wasn't really there, either, though I'm sure once they have root that'll be fixed.

I was on the Atrix but now I'm back to the Nexus One. I love this phone and the trackball. Nothing else seems to cut it. It's like a bad drug habit. Can't seem to let it go. Lol

Same here, I wiped my atrix and it boot looped. Unfortunately I don't have a PC and couldn't sbf flash. I'm gonna sell it as soon as soon the n3 comes out. Nexus for life

Kitinas: You give me hope for loving the sensation. I guess I got to feel it in my hands in store to see, and, decide if its worth the $$$.. it would be nice to have a working phone.
You other guys, have given me pause too. Atrix back to N1.. wow. I'm starting so see where you guys are coming from about wanting to go back to the n1 after selling this mt4g for a loss. Maybe it isnt too bad to buy a new N1 of ebay for $298 vs a more expensive phone.

No, no external contacts, but it does automatically go into a dock mode in the car dock, from what I've heard. People have said it responds to magnets, but I haven't experienced it personally. I haven't picked up a car dock yet cause I really can't find a good place in my car to put it. Same issue I had with my N1's dock, lol.

I have a G2x and love it. Running CM7.1 RC1 which was basically the same as what I was running on the Nexus One. The G2x does have some software bugs but CM7 fixed most of those.
Would I go back? Tough choice. I LOVED my N1. If I lost or killed my G2x and someone gave me a N1, I would use it without question and it would probably subdue me for a while.
The G2x is a pretty good upgrade from the N1. Tegra games are amazing and the touchscreen recognizes 10 inputs.
The trackball is missed when correcting typing but CM has a kernel based hack to light up our touch buttons for notifications.
I can see, using CM7 on N1 to CM7 on G2x, that the upgrade may seem dismal. I do, however, use the HDMI out and bluetooth gamepad for gaming.
If gaming isn't your thing then the Nexus One is still perfect.

Everyone who is returning the Sensation seems to not be giving any real tangible reasons for doing so. The OP lists not getting "wow'ed", but obviously that will always be subjective from person to person. downey_ryan had three devices each with a "minor issue" but won't list what they were.
For those of you downing on the Sensation, I challenge you to find some tangible reasons why the N1 is better than the Sensation. I'm not saying none exist; I just want to discuss them, rather than a "I hate the Sensation but won't say why" thread.
Anyway, a week and a half ago I sold my N1 and picked up a Sensation from Amazon. And you can tell by my signature, that this was NOT an easy decision! I've been a member of the XDA N1 community for quite some time
All throughout this time I have been absolutely dying for a larger screened phone (the Sensation is T-Mobile's first 4.3" Android), and the jump from 3.7" to 4.3" is already a HUGE enough reason for me to make the switch.
With the N1 having a larger bezel due to the trackball and HTC really minimizing the bezel on the Sensation, the total difference in pocketable device size is minimal. And compared to the benefit of such a larger screen, it is amazing. I can actually read a lot of text comfortably, and certain apps display a lot more content at once due to the qHD screen.
And this is not to mention the Sensation is even thinner than the N1 anyway. It's so thin and light that my coworker held it and said "You should put a case on it to protect it", and I already have a case on it (This one if anyone's interested.)
As I said, the screen size (and thinness, and lightness) is already a big enough reason but the lack of a trackball is actually quite nice. I thought I would miss it more, but the lack of a trackball makes the phone look sleeker, and makes it easier to put a screen protector on it to protect the entire face of the phone, buttons and all. Selecting text without a trackball is a bit more difficult, but the combination of Gingerbread's text selection tool and the qHD screen make it a non-issue. (And trackballs are a thing of the past anyway. Not a single new Android phone coming out has one, so it's best to used get used to not having one anyway.)
I admittedly missed trackball LED notifications for a few days. But then installed NoLED and instantly forgot all about them. It's much better because it displays notifications using the entire screen, which is more noticeable from far away (can configure to turn off via proximity sensor when in pockets etc to save battery), as well as repeated vibration/audio reminders (extremely helpful). If I had to switch back to the N1, I'd still use NoLED in a heartbeat.
Another huge issue is fixed as well, and that is that I can finally use multitouch everywhere without having the axes get flipped and sticking. And not to mention I can finally play all the games I couldn't play on my N1 with the much-increased processing power.
Sense 3.0 is very beautiful. Every person I've shown my phone to is instantly in awe in the first 5 seconds in just unlocking the screen, with the bouncing circle unlock and the carousel homescreen animations. I've had no issues at all so far with Sense, and I'm loving the Sense widgets, namely the photo album widget. I purchased LauncherPro Plus a long time ago, but I actually like Sense better so I have not yet had the need to use LP+ even though I paid money for it.
Speaking of paying, I sold my N1 for $200 (after the buyer's downward haggling) on Craigslist and bought the Sensation on wireless.amazon.com for $179, no tax, free shipping. So the cost was a no-brainer -- I actually made money
I would encourage everyone to make the switch. You would be surprised how fast the N1 sells on Craigslist. I literally posted in the morning, found a buyer hours later, and sold it right after work the same day. It's still a great device, and I probably could have gotten more for it (the buyer haggled down), but since I already profited from the switch and it sold so ridiculously fast, I didn't care too much.
Anyway, all in all, I am extremely satisfied with my upgrade. When the Hercules is finally announced (if ever!), I'll check into it , but for now I love my Sensation and the N1 before it. The funny thing is that I had a G1 before that. All three are HTC devices, so I guess no matter what device you pick, HTC has been good to me

Yeah. I love my Nexus.

It'll be a while before anything really impresses us again. The fact is, the Nexus One was a well-thought-out device and includes most all of the features one needs in a very practical and elegant package. I don't want a bigger phone or another cpu core. 4G would have been enticing if the carriers didn't start capping the data plans and NFC will hopefully become accepted and I can quit carrying a wallet around, but until then I'm in love with this device.
One last thing, even with everything Google & HTC put into this phone, it wouldn't be half as great without the wonderful support from the community. Thanks guys!

I love my N1. I have a Defy, and a Desire HD also, but keep going back to the N1. Just the overall use, feel, and sexyness of it makes me want to use it. Plus it has the best call quality I have ever used. I like the Sensation's look/features. Reminds me of a bigger brother to the N1, but I just can't pull the trigger. My N1 does everything I need it to do, and I'm sure it can do a lot more, so no reason to stop using it. If anyone is looking for a new one here are some places to get one. All are T-Mo bands. The ebay ones are cheaper by a lot, but welectronics is a safe reliable place to buy. All are new in box. I bought an extra just to have. For $260 it's cheaper than my original insurance with $150 deductible and $10 a month payments over the life of the phone.

This would fall under "General" or "Q&A" but we all know that no one clicks on those tabs anymore, in addition this has a little to do with development. Seeing that the mt3gs is ancient in smartphone years and that our major developers have moved on, I figured we could start a comparison thread. Before I start I would like to thank all the teams that worked hard for all of us to better enjoy the "slide"; Team Cyanogen, Arrayray, CR, CM, Guitarist, Highly Medicated so on and so on. (if I missed anyone its not personal your work is also appreciated.) With that being said its time to discuss what's next..
I myself am almost due for an upgrade and would like the communities opinion on where to go next. Right now I have two options MyTouch 4G Slide versus HTC Sensation. So far the advantage of mt4gs is the awesome camera software and hardware, but lacks in the screen section which is not qHD. I'm open to discussion and opinions, also if there is any other phone you'd like to mention please do so.
It would be nice to get a mt4gs since a lot of our devs went that route and I'd be able to keep following them but I seen some nice development in the Sensation community as well. Any opinions?

I have seen them both and I have to say the sensation is one of the best phones I have ever seen. It has a beautiful design and a really clear camera with 1080p HD camera. If you ask me, id go with the sensation. But that's only my opinion, in the end its all down to personal perspective. Whether you like a slide out keyboard or you like having a large screen. It all depends what you like.

Agreed, on both posts, I do have a long time before I can upgrade (got this as a gift) but i figure I will jus pay cash for one from like amazon.com or something! and The Sensation is Absolutely hands down the best Android Phone to date! HOWEVER, while I am still a slide user, i will develop for it proudly!

Just got a 4g slide today and am liking it the way it is so far. I HATED sense on my 3g slide but Sense 3.0 is much better IMO. Camera is awesome as well. I need the hard keyboard so my choice was easy.

Thank you guys for your opinions and input. I went and demo'd both phones today and I found something interesting.. the HTC Sensation is shipped with 2.3.3 while the mytouch 4G slide ships with 2.3.4. When I checked for an update on the sensation nothing showed up. Im sure they'll have the update soon

Thx for the mention, but i feel like all i did was get people's toes wet concerning gingerbread with sense. Really wish i had time to do more for everyone. Thankfully team medicated worked hard to bring a working gingerbread rom for us.
As far as a new phone, its almost scary to buy a new phone knowing something better will be out in 6 months or so and we're stuck with that phone for another 18 months. Personally, i've looked so many times at other phones that i think the store reps know my face by now lol. I just cant bring myself to spend hundreds of dollars to get with the hottest handset. Its tough, but waiting till im due for a full discount on a new handset. Im really intreaged to see what google's next handset is going to be. It should be out by mid 2012. I just hope its better than the nexus s. Lets face it, nexus one blew us away, but the nexus s was a bit of a let down. A beautiful handset, i just expect a google phone to be the best out there.

Personally, at the start, i really hated the Slide and was getting disappointed that i even bought it. It's only thanks to developers here that had the SalsaSlide made possible that i've actually started enjoying using it.
As for a new phone, i don't run after technology, i've learned that it's a losing race and if my phone keeps working, then i see no reason of upgrading it just for saying i have the latest. What can i say, i'm not an apple fanatic that will rush to spend hundreds just to get the exact same phone in white
Anyway, if i'll be fully honest with you guys, once they get Android on the Fuze as native OS. I'd probably be switching to it, so instead of upgrading i'd be downgrading

Guitarist you deserve to be credited, in my opinion you introduced gingersense to the slide which gave devs the jumpstart to want to incorporate sense back into roms. Thanx again. Undoubtedly there will always be another smarter phone that's just how it goes. I also understand Sefy also, it is not only money draining to keep up with the latest handset but it is a bit cliche for that matter. (my secondary is still an iPhone 3gs, never upgrading my Apple handset)

I've been using a G2x since June. I do miss the slide's community though. Not that it should really affect what phone you get.
I decided that now that I have a phone with not just one, but two 1ghz cores I can rest, haha. I hate looking at the G2x forums though, at least general anyways. It's full of trolls and rudeness, lol.
I kind of wish I had stuck it out a little longer and got the mt4gs and feel like I upgraded rather than just went to a new phone completely.
It IS fast though. I got lucky enough to not get one of the terrible ones.

Wow I felt like this a while ago and I am torn about getting a new phone when there are a lot of phones out there and its hard to choose what to get next. Mt4gs looks like a great phone and might jump ship to it.

The developing community for the Slide slowed down a long time ago. I stopped really even checking back, haven't logged in for ages. I'm due for an upgrade on September 16th, and I'm DEFINITELY going for the HTC Sensation. The screen is bigger, super high resolution, 1080p video shooting, and better battery life. I liked having a physical keyboard with my Slide, but it is cumbersome as it makes the phone significantly thicker and heavier. On an MDPI device I would go for the hard keyboard, but on HDPI, ESPECIALLY qHD 4.3" screens, I have no problem typing on the screen's keyboard. It's worth the thinner and lighter phone. Plus, on the Sensation, almost the entire front of the phone is screen space. The mts4g seems to have a thick frame around the screen, especially on the top of it, which I don't like. Yeah, sure, the camera features of the mts4g are certainly attractive, but at least for me, since my Slide camera has been broken ever since I got the phone and I was never that big of a camera user to begin with, the Sensation is a MUCH better bet. Both phones are the same price.

I had the mt3gs since It's release, after much thought and consideration, I decided that like this forum it was dead, so I upgraded with the myTouch 4G Slide. I love it, the keyboard, the screen, the look and feel. It's just like I ran my mt3gs through an update machine and the MT4GS was the result. Although it doesn't have the giant 4.3 inch touch screen and while it is not a not a super light phone, I have had a great experience so far.
The camera, let's start there, fast, clear, macro settings better than any phone I've seen so far, don't believe me, my Google+ profile has a pic of a mosquito I took with no zoom. (Link on profile) the sweep shot, the HDR multi shot that layers different white balance shots up to get great definition and color in bright light, (backlit pics as well). The action shot and shutter (as long as the camera app is already open) is just as fast as they claim, but if not held very still can be just slightly blurred, but better still than most mid grade digital cameras on the market. The only thing keeping this camera from being an actual replacement it the lack of an optical zoom. Oh and night shots....they are pretty nice as well.
The screen, 3.7" inches, Super LCD, is crisp and clear, with resolution that has honestly impressed me. The best part? You have a screen that's big enough to enjoy watching videos on and you don't feel like your gonna break your thumbs trying to reach the screen's extremities. Although I do wish it was just a little larger when gaming.
The processor, a 1.2GHz Dual Core, Snapdragon, is a beautiful change from the 600mhz of the mt3gs, finally games and apps that none of us could enjoy like Gun Bros, Need for Speed, Dungeon Defenders, and Google Earth are smooth and flowing. Even Quadrant standard's video benchmarks are now enjoyable to watch.
The keyboard, which is the reason anyone wants the phone is quite different from it's predecessor's or any others I've seen or used. The buttons are almost flat and press very easily, almost too easily at first but after about a week of using it, it's almost a pleasure to use, just be careful of the back button when typing the letter 'M', I have lost several Facebook posts, even part of this post so far.
Sense 3.0 is beautiful but it and it's components eat up 3GB of the MT4GS 4GB of on-board storage and around 40% of its 768MB of RAM. And T-Mobile's removal of the 7 screen option and lockscreen shortcuts make it slightly frustrating.
Kid Zone is also a big annoyance, while it is a neat alternative lockscreen geared toward kids is built into sense and not exactly what I would make for a child.
The '4G' aspect is not quite all its claimed to be, in Pittsburgh averaging 3-4 Mbps, but is quite a bit more reliable than I would have thought. The GPS is fast to lock, till rooted it seems, and compass and multiple rotation sensors make it crazy accurate and very sensitive. This makes it great for gaming, almost as good as a gyroscope, if not slightly better in some aspects. And the Bluetooth 3.0 makes file pushes fast and simple. And the usb transfers at around 4MB/s making video upload easy.
The over all feel of the phone is awkward at first being just slightly thicker than the HTC glacier(MT4G) yet not as thick and stocky as the mt3gs, it has grown on me more everyday, and I am very happy I made this choice.
My over all rating of this phone would be a 4.5 out of 5, it is a beautiful piece of technology, and should be relevant for a while to come.

Neanderthal, thanx for that beautiful review and sharing your personal experience with the mt4gs. I also must admit after I demo'd the handset I've been wanting it more and more.
Speaking of other phones, does anyone know if the Nokia N9 will work on tmobile? It's a sick piece of equipment and IS the best camera for smart phone. The UI is effin dope and from specs and reviews this phone is killer. Any help will be appreciated .. thanx again for all the input. If there are any other phones out there please post. (worthy of posting)

You could always wait it out for the samsung hercules, nexus prime and htc ruby to show up. As far as i know they should all be hitting the market fairly soon. Just a suggestion

I just replaced my wifes MTS (Warranty) with a MTS in red, she loves the phone with CM7 on it and she likes the keyboard all in total I have replaced the 2 mytouch slides 5 times through t-mobile due to hardware failure (Camera, Front buttons, and keyboard issues)
I however just ordered a G2x and it should be here today, I'm not going anywhere though, I have always liked the MTS though it has not been a reliable phone CM7 Makes it so much better. One of the reasons I got a G2x is it has Vanilla android so I will get updates faster (More likely than phones with Sense)

With the release of sense 3.0 it wouldn't surprise me if phones with sense got updates sooner. Either way thanks your input. Let us know how that G2X goes for you

As a fellow G2x member, I say welcome! However to the updates, I'd have to say... Nope. We don't quite have Vanilla android... We waited a few months for Gingerbread and when we got it, it was "half-baked" and still not exactly Vanilla.
But the phone is a beast. Do enjoy it, cause I know I do.
And there's always rooting and roms.

Im not biased to any phone. I like anything new and high powered. Cant get me wrong I love my Atrix but the Galaxy S II is tempting.

i'm pretty happy with my Atrix, i think i'm gonna hold off on upgrading until a decent quad core phone comes out on the market.

Not enough of an upgrade to think about it.
The Devs have really just started to take this phone to its capabilities so worth hanging in for a while longer.

When the SGSII came out back in... May(ish), it seems liked I should have not gotten an Atrix and waited for the SGSII to come to AT&T. the SGSII had a bigger screen, faster CPU, no Blur, no locked bootloader, and already had a pre-beta of Cyanogen out within two weeks of the phone hitting the international market.
Fast Foward to today. The Atrix has an unlocked bootloader, a *solid* beta of CM7, MIUI in the works, a bigger battery, and the performance is close to that of the SGS (in CM7 while OC'd) - in some tests it is noticeabley faster.
The SGSII also seems to have some hardware issues that have been reported. Yellowing of the screen on the left side is the most reported issue.
Now look to the future because the SGSII isn't going to come out for another two weeks. Should we have all waited to get an SGSII? No way, not IMHO. I was sitting on an iPhone 3GS for months and months after I was eligible for an upgrade, I was just waiting until something big came out or the phone died. I'll be honest, at first I did regret my Atrix purchase at times. Software versus 4.1.26 had a TON of bugs in it, 4.1.57 did too. 4.1.83 was solid, and when we got GB the phone was pretty solid. Now with CM7 I have no complaints over the phone at all, and I'm glad I didn't suffer with my iPhone 3GS for the last 7 months (I bougt the Atrix on release day) waiting for the SGSII after returning the Atrix to wait for the SGSII.
If I had waited this long for the SGSII with my iPhone 3GS, I would likely pass up the SGSII and wait for more info on the Nexus Prime.

One thing I don't miss going from my captivate to atrix is in the power usage menu "display" being like 95%. I don't know why they say SAMOLED use less power. I know the screen on the sgs and sgs2 is different but they're close enough IMO. Also after all the BS with GPS and poor update from Samsung I don't know if I could buy another. As far as specs....IMO I don't think it's worth the upgrade the specs are really similar. The only reason I might be tempted is for the dev support.

as someone who has had both i can assure you the atrix is a much more all-around solid piece of hardware.
like reported above the screen on the SGSii may be bigger but it has its issues (yellow left on most handsets and battery consumption).
the battery is simply way worse then atrix.
and what got to me the most about going back to the atrix was the sound quality, it was simply horrendous, especially for a high-end phone like that.
the sound chip on it is sub-par compared to the original SGS even, with high end headphones i was getting distortions, low volume, and very un-even sound, to anyone who wants to listen to music on his phone this one simply kills the deal.
atrix has a very very good audio experience compared.
same goes for call quality.
and the phone doesnt even have a led for notifications.
also doesnt have an hdmi-out without you buying some special cable adapter.
what does seem to be on its side is a huge dev base working on it and realeasing things daily but the atrix is starting to catch up... just give it some time.
either way upgrading from a atrix to a galaxy 2 is pretty stupid, except for a bit larger screen you really dont get anything in return for all that cash.
i'd wait atleast another year before ditching the atrix. theres simply nothing today that it cant handle so why buy another "future proof" phone when your current one is still "future proof"

It appears to have a lot of dev support, but how many of those ROM's are the exact same thing with a different theme? That's the way the Captivate was until CM7 dropped...everything was the same.

i just upgraded this july so no sgsII for me. the galaxy was going to be my upgrade, but it just took too long to come out. also, it's not gonna be the latest and greatest anymore like it would've been when it came out internationally, the sgsIII will probably be out internationally in 6 months since most phone lines get upgraded yearly.
my friend mentioned the PS Vita yesterday and i'm doing research on that to see if it has enough functions to become a phone for me.

I'd rather have an atrix with an average screen than have a SAMOLED that destroys my battery. I have an upgrade available and being 100% honest I'm waiting for a new BB QNX mobile phone to drop next year. The new 9810 with os7 was actually a pretty big step forward in speed and functionality and supposedly QNX will be able to run Android apps as well. Not saying it's gonna be the king of phones but it looks pretty cool.

I have the infuse plus an atrix, while the screen on the infuse is so sexy,, the atrix for me has the total package,, the sgs2 for me is not that much of a upgrade from my atrix, even the infuse for that matter, sure it has godly specs, but in real world usage, even my old ass dinc still get the job done,,
I dont like where the smartphone market is heading.. things need to slow back down. alittle,, before you know it, the atrix 3 will be out 3 months after the atrix 2 at the end of the year, lol

The newer Super AMOLED Plus displays have more sub-pixels and they do not use pentile anymore which also helps eliminate the "grainy" look. I would still like to see qHD but I don't think there is going to be much to complain about on these screens.

I owned an Infuse and loved the screen and the colors, but I would rather have a higher resolution screen. I find the lower resolution something to complain about, although it isn't that big of a deal for some people.

Possibly looking at the GS3, would like some opinions

I have a friend who is letting me use the upgrade on their line at the end of September to get a phone so I can keep my unlimited. As it sits right now I have a Galaxy Nexus. I love the phone but want something with newer tech. I had a few questions though.
The first being battery life of the phone compared to the GNex. I'm not at all satisfied with the performance of the Nexus regarding the battery. I average under 2 hours screen time and medium usage, and that sort of stinks. Since the S3 has the same size battery as my extended I have now, is the batter life good in those regards?
Secondly there are some good looking phones coming down the line. I'm a picky person when it comes to screens. Is the quality good regarding the screen? I have some burn in on my nexus and I don't know how the S3 is. Also, the nexus has an annoying issue where the screen loses sensitivity after a while. Does that happen on the S3 as well?
Would I be better waiting for the Note 2, RAZR maxx HD, or the HTC device or getting the S3?

Here's my personal opinion;
If you're looking for newer tech, why don't you wait for the new Nexus phone(s) coming around December? The S3 is bound to lag behind upcoming phones because technology is moving really fast.
Since the Galaxy S3 has the same screen as the Galaxy Nexus, it is bound to be affected by screen burns after a year or more. The screen quality is excellent but Super AMOLED screens are prone to burn-ins. The Note 2 has a better screen, in my opinion.
The battery life of the S3 is superb! Really. My friend's Nexus doesn't last long at all whilst my S3 can last for a long time!
Stick with the Nexus for now.

Thanks for the honest responses. I wish more companies would follow HTC and use super LCD2, the screen is awesome and crystal clear. I like the note 2 but I fear it might be just too big.

Just wait a bit for the optimus g or a bit more for the new nexus. The sg3 is great, but there are going to be a few better choises very soon, at least hardware-wise. Then razr maxx hd looks promising, It might be a good bet considering the google acquisition of moto...

I have never been a fan of LG, they always seem to be lacking. I heard a rumor about the new nexus being the 5 inch phablet from HTC. Not sure how I feel about having a super big phone. I'll have to check out the note 2 to figure out if I could handle it.

The razr maxx hd looks nice on videos and articles, but Its a bit thick and has a dual core cpu. Lg makes great hardware, but I've never liked the software and slow updates. There are probably going to be other devices with a s4 pro(quadcore) chip soon I would wait and go for one of those.

SGS3 is awesome... Best phone I ever had (and I had quite a few..).
Battery lasts me all day (just email, browsing & reading newsfeeds), no problem. Screen is nice, no complaints. The S3 is just gorgeous and really speedy. I use mine with a 64GB SD-Card, which is the reason why I passed on the GNex.. I need storage space for movies and music!
Best of all, I hook my S3 up to my 42in flatscreen TV (LG), and the picture is nice and crisp...
Did I already suggest you should get an S3 (Quad core)?
Sure, there will always be better & faster phones coming out, but this one just has everything you (probably) want.
Just one thing I really hate about the S3: the physical 'Home' button. HTC did that better on the Rezound (a crappy phone w/ a nice screen...), even though those morons gave it 4 buttons. - How dumb is that?
I certainly will never get another HTC as long as 'Sense' is around - even though I used to root all my phones and put Custom ROMs (preferably CM) on them anyway...
However, I have to admit that after using Samsung TouchWiz (in JB flavor) for the last 6-8 weeks, I have no desire switching to some always half-broken CM ROM anymore.
With TW, at least, all the features work.. right away!!!

i have to honestly say this phone is amazing. not a single fault with it.
its heavily supported by the community, paranoid android is amazing too. etc etc etc.
but as always, just look at what you need. theres never any point looking for the greatest tech, because another this or that will come along in a month and be the new 'best'.
for me, external SD card was a must, removable battery is always nice, etc etc.
either take the dive and get an S3 which will be a really really solid phone for the next 12 months and probably longer, or wait another 6 and get the next big thing, be it nexus, galaxy, HTC <insert name here>... but just make sure it does what you need (and with the number of custom roms out there, this is becoming more and more flexible)

Same here, this phone is great, lots of fun and also needed an SD card and battery I could swap. Nothing worse than arriving somewhere and having to wait for the phone to charge!

I was thinking of jumping from the Sensation 4G with Tmo to the GS3 since they are offering an upgrade 2 months early...I think I will stay with my rooted Sensation a bit longer its awesome anyways but I think Tmo will be getting a new line up before Christmas...Im considering the Note 2 but it may be too big Im not sure yet...just dont wanna waste an upgrade and a month later the lastest and greatest hit the market....

Found it very uncomfortable to use. Impossible to operate in one had. I would try it out yourself, i wish i did, its not as smooth as everyone makes out. However, i was advised to do lots of things to it which would have made it smooth like rooting etc (i couldn't be bothered with the hassle of that)
Screen is very good but not as good as other phones and its really bad in sunlight. Almost unusable.
Dont know what battery other people have got but its not very good. You wouldn't get through a day with it thats for sure. Android fans had a tough time over the years with battery but this is an improvement.
Also, the device is not very pretty as others seem to think. Again this is personal preference. Its very plasticy and flimsy. One drop and its dead. Poor build quality.
As you can see my post is very negative due to the experience I had with it. Personally, if your an android fan wait til december.

An opinion, that most people do not share. I would just wait for the next Nexus or look at what HTC is brining out. Something tells me the new Nexus phone may be a disappointment, I do hope I'm wrong though

I am satisfied with my Nexus 4. Being using for 2 weeks and it's the best your money can buy.
If storage and glass aren't a big deal, then this phone is the best choice.
PS Ordered the second one on 27th for my bro. I love it SOOO much!

When I am in SF for work, I have LTE but I need to use office wifi for tranfer and other stuff. At home, my LTE is soooo slow that I need to use my home wifi.

No I order through the Play store and use tmobile pre-paid's $30 plan. Works for me. I also have Sprint, which my family uses.

Love my nexus 4... Official cm10. Official PA. official AOKP. Franco and Faux kernels...
Gorgeous 768p IPS. Luxury feel in the hand. Amazingly slick curved display (defiantly don't want to drop this phone)
Meh camera (still great though, just not exciting) and some thermal throttling (being worked on)...
Lte is a non issue as hspa± is plenty fast. I mean, it loads YouTube, music, xda all instantly. Its not like we are doing real time video games and 1080p video streaming (just runs down my data plan quicker)

You really make some valid points. Camera on my HTC One X is nothing crazy either. (pretty sure they have the same specs?) I'd also like to get into modding my phone and I think the Nexus would make it easy but I honestly have no idea what I would be doing. Hahaha. How do I learn more about it because I'm a complete newb.

Awesome phone, I completely love it. Don't need LTE either. External SD would have made this phone too good to be true.

I got the N4 in the mail the Monday after it came out. I too am coming from the AT&T HTC One X. I used the N4 for about a week straight before deciding to break out the ol' One X (just for a change of pace). Quite frankly, it would be hard for me to give up the N4 for the HOX now.
The HOX is a great phone, but the N4 just makes it feel slow in comparison. Maybe I'm spoiled by the speed of the N4, but I just felt like I had to wait forever to do basic things on the One X (running the latest ViperROM, btw). The HOX has better battery life, for sure, and the camera is better. I miss those two things the most. The HOX still has the best screen out there (other than the Droid DNA), but the N4 really isn't far behind. Once a few color control apps come out for the N4, my guess is that I won't really miss the screen as much. For what it's worth, I forgot just how big the HOX's screen is. When they say 4.7", they mean it. The N4 has a 4.7" screen too, but it's probably more like a 4.5" once the on-screen buttons are considered. But the additional width is really nice and almost makes up for it. I don't have LTE anywhere near me where I live, so that's irrelevant to me. I don't travel much either.
Here's my summary.
HTC One X:
- slightly better, arguably bigger screen
- better battery
- better camera (in terms of picture quality; the software is on par with the N4)
- smaller development community, although they're doing a great job imo
- poor multitasking on Sense roms (works fine on AOSP roms)
N4:
- stock Android
- blazes through any task you throw at it
- AT&T doesn't control your phone
- easier to root, flash roms, kernels, etc.
- future proof with quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM
I am fully satisfied with my Nexus 4. I love my One X, but I will not be going back to it any time soon, most likely.

I've actually been with the iPhone since the 3GS when I came into the smartphone world. I read up about this and decided to give it a try from the 4S I was using, and I'm really enjoying the Nexus 4.
I'm still a bit apprehensive to give up iOS since I've been with it for so long--still haven't sold my 4S--but I have a feeling I'll be sticking with this phone for a while. The larger screen real-estate is also much nicer to have in general. I'm torn!

I feel like you and me are one in the same! The only thing I do miss is the amount of iPhone users. All my friends and family have one... Which makes me miss iMessage and group texting :/

You are on the forums and mentioned your problems with the 1X community's lack of activity.
I like the screen, but other phones have better screens which are also better calibrated. I like the camera, but indoor photos have very inaccurate white balance.
Connectivity is good (I'm using a $10 MEdia Net plan from AT&T and have used over 2GB every month and one month even went over 12GB cause my Internet was out), and I'm getting 500KB/s average (~4Mbps). Battery life is also good; I get about a day of moderate use and 6-7 hours of literally constant, active use. I am really hurting from the lack of storage as I do a lot of reporting and don't always have time to transfer the interview recordings. I do a lot of work away from a PC and need to be able to quickly seek tracks, so I have to keep he audio on internal memory.
By most people's standard, I'm very careful with my phone. I consider my usage to be of common sense and responsible practice. The Gorilla Glass is very scratch resistant, but I'm sure a few encounters with silicate and a hard surface would leave a mark.
But really, all of these things pale in comparison to one criterion: the development community. I came from a Galaxy S and the community was amazing. Though the HP Touch Pad was well known, it apparently wasn't popular enough to garner a lot of dev support and those forums are fairly sparse.
By getting a Nexus phone, you know that the every dev is prioritizing your phone over any other model they might be working on as well. Cyanogen posted. AOKP posted. Moles posted. These are the respective heads of the three best teams this community has to offer. Check their post history. They don't appear in too many other phones' forums; they usually have teammates do that. But for the Nexus 4, they want to be the ones posting. That says a lot.
And a lot of other devs know this about the community heads' devotion to the newest Nexus model. They are locked in to a N4 for the major dev support, but will also provide their own amateur, but very valuable, contributions as well.
I'm sure the 1X is a great phone. I'm sure the 1X+ is a great phone. Same goes for the DNA, Optimus G, and other leading smartphones out there. But the N4 attracts the biggest development teams, and in turn attracts smaller developers. It kind of feeds on itself, with regard to popularity. None of these other phones have so much 3rd party support going on for them.
So, if you are looking for the absolute best hardware, maybe you should keep looking (keep the N4 in mind, though). If you're looking for flexibility, know that your stuck with one battery on the road and can't expand the meager storage provided. But if your looking for ROMs, kernels, and tweaks that let you customize the phone exactly how you want it, and maximize the potential of the hardware, then look no further.
The Nexus 4 subforums are truly the promised land.

Couldn't have said it better. The best devs are working on this phone (provided if they could get one) and that is the exciting part of Nexus4. Trumps all other phones out there.
It might seem very complicated at once if you are not familiar with Android, but it's actually quite simple. And people are always there to help. I'm looking forward to at least 1 great year with this phone.

And the fact that I am the only one I know are using it makes it super cool. I have several friends who know of N4 but didn't purchase one all liked the phone after I showed them. Their impression was the speed and the screen.
A friend asked me to purchase an iPhone for him since I'm going back to China soon. While in Apple Store, I took out my phone and google talk'ed with him. I can't help but notice the "Genius" looking at me. :laugh: And signing on that 3.5' tiny screen is just ridiculous. I paid half the price for what he is gonna pay for that piece of gadget, but I don't even have the desire to try out the iPhone 5 in their store.

When I got my N4 I was stunned at the slim look and mild colors. I wasn't sure if I'd like it after being on an SGS2 for over a year. I've gotten to where I really love everything about the phone, except the signal.. It sucks.
I can hold the phone next to my Nexus 7 or Galaxy Tab 10.1 and where I would normally get full bars of Wifi signal, I get 1 bar if I am lucky. The cellular signal is terrible as well. Living in Florida with hurricane glass and Double block walls - my SGS2 got really good signal, this thing is just garbage. If you rely on good signal, its not for you..
The touch sensitivity on the on-screen buttons at the lower portion of the phone seem to be not so great, other than that and the signal issues everything else is excellent..

Like you, I previously owned a at&t htc one x as well. I ordered my nexus 4 on the 13th and have been using it for a couple of weeks now. Since then, I have sold my htc one x.
to be completely honest, i have to say i liked the camera and screen combination of the htc one x better. Colors on the htc one x were brilliant and vivid, while the nexus 4 screen seemed to look dull. this is all personal preference, but i prefer the 'over-saturated' look.
speed on the nexus 4 is a lot faster compared to sense, but when i had cm10 on my htc one x it wasnt a slouch either.
in terms of aesthetics, they are both beautiful in their own ways. i quite liked the htc's design, but i agree on the lack of support, with the nexus you are guaranteed at least a couple of updates, (just look at the nexus s, got 4.1)
here's my advice to you: as nice as the nexus 4 is, if there is nothing wrong with you htc one x, dont upgrade. If you want jellybean 4.2 and dont want to wait for the update, root your HOX and put cm10 on it.
I was able to sell my HOX for $260 and my nexus 4 was $340 after taxes/shipping.

I for one am very happy with my Gnex4...Ive had every phone that came out this year...just sold my note 2 which was a pure beast if I must say but this nexus have a more snappier feeling as far as speed and etc...plus development is going crazy for this phone which is a big +....but overall this is the best phone on the market hands down...with the note 2 very close behind...
