So I think my Hero is rooted...

I'm with GCI/Alaska Digitel and I used Universal Androot it said my phone was successfully rooted. Is it rooted to the point where I can flash custom ROMs?
If not, is it possible to root via another method?
And if so, is it possible to back my radio up then flash a ROM, then recover my radio?

Download Rom Manager from the market. You need to install a custom recovery to flash ROMs. If it allows you to flash clockworkmod recovery, you are rooted and ready to flash.

You won't change the radio when you flash roms and such,unless you flash a radio zip. NEVER FLASH A RADIO THAT IS FOR A GSM PHONE!(not yelling just don't want you to brick your phone)

Okay so it is rooted, downloaded and did the Rootcheck or whatever. I got a couple CM7 roms but they won't boot. It just sits at the boot screen spinning, stops for a second, and then starts the CM7 boot screen over.

Well you need to wipe and format the appropriate things first. Read the readme on AOSP's mod thread.

First, you need to wipe data, cache, boot and system. Do this twice and then flash the rom.

I am rooted and have CWM installed. I am looking to put back the stock 4.22 recovery so I may install the the 4.24 OTA update.
I like to keep my Rom stock and prefer to install updates via OTA.

If you take the 4.24 OTA you will no longer be "rooted" Look for one of the rooted ROMs and flash it

I am using the Unrevoked root method and no update (3.70,4.22) to date has unrooted my phone.
I have simply been restoring the current version of the stock recovery, which I have previously found on the internets, and then running the OTA update as normal. Once done I install CWM and the latest SU updates. Works great.
I would like to perfrom this method once agian to install the 4.24 update and all I need is the 4.22 stock recovery.

If you don't want to be rooted anymore, then just accept the OTA - it'll override your current recovery with the stock recovery, which is actually a lack of recovery.
But as others have said, you won't be able to root again unless you've ran unrevoked or unrevoked forever and remain s-off. In that case, you'll have to flash a recovery and then flash the rooted version. So if you want to stay rooted, you might as well go ahead and do that. You should be able to just wipe cache and dalvik and install, so the end result will be the same but you'll be rooted.

This is the actual update, but rooted, so you can keep your CWM recovery, get the latest update that was made OTA, but remain rooted. You don't want to just accept the OTA if prompted, your root will go away.

Thats the problem. I cannot install the OTA 4.24 update with CWM installed, nor can I install the update manually, via renaming and then update method, as it will error out during install.
OTA updates will only install if the proper stock verion of recovery in installed, hence I really need the 4.22 recovery.
Installing OTA updates when using Unrevoked does not change S-OFF, it only overwrites SU which can be easily reinstalled. I know as I rooted my evo way back when it was version 3.26 using unrevoked 3 and have installed every OTA update since using this method and still have S-OFF

And you won't be rooted anymore. There are only about 3 thousand posts telling people this, and most AFTER they found out the hard way. There are stock Rooted ROMS based on the recovery, as in STOCK! but still rooted, and up to date.
BTW, there are also a lot of posts detailing how the OTA made their phones worse, but if you want to be a hard head, go ahead and bury yourself, but don't come back crying when you figure out.

how come every other incompetent noob can manage to get their phone back to stock and permanently locked/unrooted, yet I cannot manage this feat intentionally?

if I intentionally flash the 4.22 zip from shipped-roms will this eliminate my root and recovery?

well install the 4.22 update from recovery didn't work... it aborted with some error.

I appreciate the heads up, but if done correctly, it does work and has worked great for me the past few OTA updates.
I am aware of all the potential problems and am not the only one successfully installing OTA updates on a rooted evo and staying rooted.

Bottom line is if you change back to S-ON, and apply the OTA you lose root forever (or until Unrevoked finds a new backdoor). If you leave S-OFF then you can downgrade, and reload a recovery. The stock ROM's you'll find here (ex. Sprint Lover's) are stock, and rooted. They pretty much the same thing you get over the air. Don't be a lid..

I downloaded a from shipped roms the last rom for my evo and downloaded the s-on tool. Ran the tool then connected my phone to the computer and ran the RUU i donloaded. Fully stock unrooted locked phone

First learn the correct terminology for what you are tying to achieve. There is no 4.22 recovery that you can just flash, there is a 4.22 ROM and a 4.22 RUU.
Then check out the WIKI and FAQs these both contain the info you are looking for .
Not trying to be mean. Just do some research before you mess up your phone and come here asking for stuff that doesn't exist.
4.22 ROM = just the ROM
4.22 RUU = .exe that runs on your PC to FLASH your PHONE with new radio, recovery, hboot, rom, etc

ROM Manger + 1.8.3 (Froyo) question?

I was previously on 2.3.4 with CherryBlur, but i downgraded back to 1.8.3 (Froyo) through SBF.
When i boot up it no longer says "Unlocked", but i read around and i believe my Phone still has an unlocked bootloader. (Quick Question: How do i get it back to say "Unlocked" without losing any data?)
Now I installed ROM Manager from the Market, and Installed CWM, because i think i lost CWM when i downgraded.
Question: Am i ready to download and install Roms now. Also when i click Download Roms in the Rom Manager i get an error getting list.

theres a cmd in the unlock thread that let you know if youre still unlocked. and i dont know of any rom that are downloadable from there yet.

all you have to do is reflash the pudding. i've done it multiple times. if you try to fastboot oem unlock again it'll say already unlocked. reflashing the pudding restores the prestigious Unlock text at boot

Help with unlocking and so on

Hello everyone I was hoping I could get some help with my ATT Atrix 4G, as of right now I have my Atrix running 1.5.7 and rooted. For some reason about a week ago my Wifi just stopped working and says error. So I did a little looking around and didnt see a fix besides flashing the phone so I thought I might as well update to the latest and greatest. Now I did my phone so long ago that I have Tenfar's CWM recovery for Motorola Atrix 4G on it. I would like to flash to Flashable SBF: Full 2.3.4 with preinstall root and pudding bootloader unlock, full sbf but Im not sure the steps I need to take. Over all this is what I would like to do.
Number 1. Put CWM Recovery Mod for Atrix 4G and take off Tenfar's CWM
Number 2. Unlock the phone Pudding
Number 3. Flash to Flashable SBF: Full 2.3.4 with preinstall root and pudding bootloader unlock, full sbf
Number 4. Get wireless tether working.
One thing I don't fully understand is do you need to unlock the phone using pudding before you flash Full 2.3.4 with preinstall root and pudding bootloader unlock or can you just flash and have it unlocked?
So what I really need to know is the order of everything, CWM Recovery Mod for Atrix says you need to be unlocked to use it. So do I need to unlock the phone like in number 2 to before I do number 1 and 3 or can I flash number three and the will unlock the phone? Then do Number 1 and skip number 2 altogether? And as far as number 4 goes if some one could point me in the right direction for working wifi tether on 2.3.4 ATT that would be great.
One other thing I was wondering is it safe to flash for 1.5.7 to 2.3.4 or should I flash to 1.8.3 and then to 2.3.4?

As far as I understand, at the moment you are on 1.8.3.
In that case the very first thing you should do is flash pudding (BL unlock sbf).
After that install CWM and do a full backup.
When you have that you can install whichever room you want (don't sbf back to 1.8.3 tho - hard brick), you can install stock 2.3.4 via CWM and root it afterwords manually if you want. It's all a matter of which rom you prefer. Hell, you can try them all as CWM makes it all really easy.
Pudding needs to be flashed only at step 1 and it stays with your forever as long as you dont' SBF. Which you really don't need to do since we have CWM and fastboot.

Have a quick question, what is the difference between the automatic unlock script and the SBF that unlocks and roots via preinstall?
I am on stock 4.5.91 OTA with no modifications at all. Which method should I use? Which is safest/easiest.
I am on win7 64 bit with latest moto drivers installed.

Automatic script is supposed to automate (duh ) some of the unlocking steps for you, but I personally wouldn't recommend it. It failed for me and for many other people too if you read their thread.
With the manual pudding unlock - you can't screw up if you follow all of the steps precisely. But you do have to do all the steps manually, which is a good learning process if you ask me.
If you are on 4.5.91, after flashing pudding and doing the fastboot unlock commands you will get failed to boot error. This is normal and all you have to do is repeat the fastboot commands for the second time and all will be fine.
Do not under the fear of death SBF back to 1.8.3 or you will brick your phone.

I would recommend using the smaller pudding sbf, since that's what I used. But from what I read, both SBFs work without problems.
You can root manually afterwords. It's very easy.

Nope. The process slightlt differs between 2.3.4 and prior.
But besides that you can unlock 1.5.7 just fine.

No you don't need to be on 1.83 but for easy I would recommend also if it helps these are the steps I took.
1. 2. Using RSD (the latest one 5.x.x) I flashed the 2.34 sbf that comes prerooted/unlocked although the root doesn't actually work then you have to follow the preinstall root method they describe on that same post for the sbf.
I never installed CWM but I would suggest doing that one last
**Edit: yes I did forget to mention my circumstance where I flashed back to 1.26 was Im sure pure luck that I did not hard brick my phone. This is not recommended. Why my phone did not brick is still unknown.
From unlocked/rooted GB Atrix

I'm on 1.8.3, unlocked, rooted, with Gingerblur and webtop hacks (web2sd, without dock, full ubuntu).
So I'm confused as to why I cant just flash ATT-2.3.4_Pudding_preroot.sbf, it has 2.3.4/2.5.91, unlocked, root preinstalled.
Would this not give me unlocked 2.3.4 with root ready to set-up? Would I have to "clean" it or is that just optional?
People are saying to install pudding using the automatic script first, but then why create the above sbf file?
What about the 1.8.3, unlocked, root preinstall sbf file?
So if I cant use the unlocked 2.3.4 sbf file, I would first flash pudding on my phone then which 2.3.4/4.5.91 sbf file would I flash with since the OTA update won't work due to mods, and because I didnt think we should use OTA.
I want to do the method that will prevent any bricking, but I also dont want to waste time or do unnecessary flashing.

BE CAREFULLY .... IT SEEM HE/SHE WAS LUCKY WHEN HE/SHE FLASH BACK TO 1.26... IF YOU RUN THE SCRIPT AND PASS STEP 3 YOU HAVE PUDDING SO IF YOU FLASH BACK TO 1.26 YOU WILL END WITH A HARD BRICK... I flashed the full SBF of 2.3.4 with pudding and preroot already installed and I was left with a 0x1000 error which i was able to fix by simply rebooting into fastboot mode and then running 'fastboot oem unlock'. I was really scared when I saw the error but I was able to fix it. Just an fyi for anyone else that might run into that problem.

A few weeks ago when the bootloader was unlocked, and hktw craze began I was happily running GB, a couple days into it my phone started acting crazy, would constantly act if someone was touching it, and I noticed a very small portion of the touch screen quit responding, this happened out of no where, I took the phone back to at&t and they shipped a new one to me.
Now that has nothing to do with your phone but what I am trying to say is that if hardware on your phone randomly quit working more than likely having nothing to do with mods you've done to it.. take it back, get a new one, if you can.

This is a known issue and you resolved it correctly by redoing fastboot commands.
Many other people weren't so luck (didn't read instructions) and opted for an SBF back, causing them to hardbrick.

Path A. After flashing pudding i would avoid SBFs entirely, unless there's no other way. Any rom can be flashed via fastboot or CWM, so use that as it's much safer.

[Q] Can't access Safestrap recovery

What's happening is that the phone boots normally (Moto logo, then pops up the SS splash) but once on the SS splash I can't actually click either of the buttons (boot, recovery). The phone works completely fine as far I can tell once it gets into the OS (CM10 beta) but I can't access SS to get back into my stock ROM at this point.
What I want to do is get the bootloader unlocked using the method that was recently released but I don't want to accidentally brick or something awful like that in the process. The stock ROM is currently 4.1.2 (VZW OTA update, with root) but I have no access to it.
I might be being overly paranoid here but after bricking a couple different things (phone, psp, etc) trying to do things like this in the past I always like to make sure I'm not doing something really stupid before I do it.
If I were to flash back this ROM using fast boot, it would basically go back to what it was out of the box correct? No SS, all my apps etc gone.

Correct, if you flash that through RSD it will return the phone back to stock. You should check out Matt's utility 1.20. It will return you to stock, allow you to re-root, unlock your bootloader, and install a custom recovery. All are options in Utility 1.20.
