[Q] Can't access Safestrap recovery - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What's happening is that the phone boots normally (Moto logo, then pops up the SS splash) but once on the SS splash I can't actually click either of the buttons (boot, recovery). The phone works completely fine as far I can tell once it gets into the OS (CM10 beta) but I can't access SS to get back into my stock ROM at this point.
What I want to do is get the bootloader unlocked using the method that was recently released but I don't want to accidentally brick or something awful like that in the process. The stock ROM is currently 4.1.2 (VZW OTA update, with root) but I have no access to it.
I might be being overly paranoid here but after bricking a couple different things (phone, psp, etc) trying to do things like this in the past I always like to make sure I'm not doing something really stupid before I do it.
If I were to flash back this ROM using fast boot, it would basically go back to what it was out of the box correct? No SS, all my apps etc gone.

Correct, if you flash that through RSD it will return the phone back to stock. You should check out Matt's utility 1.20. It will return you to stock, allow you to re-root, unlock your bootloader, and install a custom recovery. All are options in Utility 1.20.

Thanks for the info, didn't know about Matt's Util but looks like it does everything I wanted to get done.

Grey Blur... how old is that. Wasn't that for froyo and not gingerbread...
Ok, 2 things, well 3 things actually...
1) Did you actually try to flash a ROM and/or is your phone stuck in a bootloop? If not, and you just want to return to stock, you can flash the 4.5.91 (Android 2.3.4) sbf file. This will fully return you to stock, no root, no cwm, no nothing but stock. Or if your just trying to wipe the theme you installed, try a factory reset.
2) If you did try to flash a ROM and are stuck somewhere... you can still flash the correct sbf file, or you can go ahead an unlock your bootloader.
3) Do not use Tenfar's recovery. Use Rom Racer's or ROM Manager... but you need to unlock your bootloader first.

You are able to flash Tenfar's without unlocking your phone, it's also required to flash Greyblur. I've done it before aswell, I installed Gingerblur without unlocking my phone. Very dangerous yea I know. So do what Swift said, unlock your phone or flash ONLY a 4.5.91 SBF onto it.
P.S. Yea Gingerblur/Greyblur is froyo!

[Q] Using afterOTA to update bootloader and nothing changed?

I read and re-read the development thread for AfterOTA and I found nothing on this problem. I will outlay the steps I took. I downloaded AfterOTA lite v1.7 and connected my tab to it and saved the txt file. (I can list the full output if needed) the Bootloader was as follows:
bootloader: 0.03.0X-HC
Android Build: FLEXREAPER RF1_rv1_Acer_AV041_A500_1.031_033_041.00_CUS_WW_GEN1
I booted into Recovery and found the version number.
My custom recovery: ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.0.0(thor2002ro rev1.3.4)
I bought this from a friend and didn't do all the modding myself which I am new to the Iconia a500 (but not new to Rooting, Romming, Recovering) so I am a little in the dark on where to go from here.
I downloaded AfterOTA 1.7 (the Full version) and clicked on the "standard" tab and chose the install "bootloader ICS v 3.14.7 + recovery thor v1.7.3" and clicked the "for 50x"
It shut the tablet down said booting into APX, did the whole thing and at the end it said "complete, you can power down your tablet with the power button and boot back up"
I powered it down it booted up fine but when I reconnected it to afterOTA it dosent read the CPuid (it just says "0") and the bootloader space is blank.
Everything works, I can use it as I normally would but I want to install the new flexreaper and thought I might as well update the Bootloader and recovery to get up to current on everything. Thank you for any help you can give me in understanding what happened and what I may have done wrong. BTW I did disable all antivirus and UAC and rebooted before running AfterOTA.
You're probably ok. You just need to flash a "real" ICS rom like Flexreaper Extreme I would guess.
When you boot your tab, you should see some text in the left corner like "Skirlax_CZ's bootloader version xxxxxx" If you do, then bootloader is probably ok. Boot into your recovery and check your recovery version.
MD
I dont have anything come up when i boot other than a big white acer logo and then it does two smaller acer white logos side by side. Then it does the android boot animation. I booted into recovery and it is thor v5 not the one i had chosen in afterOTA. I just want to know what to do from here. Should i try again or use another method?
I just dont want to flash an ICS Rom without the ICS bootloader.and is there another way other than afterOTA to check the boot loader version?

Well, after ota didn't work then. You should have seen the txt immediately on boot. (the split acer tells me it's a HC modified ICS kernel in the rom).
You could try manually flashing the bootloader with NVFlash.
My theory, is that you should install the OTA/Full version of ICS. This will install the stock bootloader, then, you can run the after OTA app. Reason being, is that my theory is that the real ICS bootloader creates something the HC BL doesn't. And when you try NVFlashing the unlocked bootloader, it just doesn't take. It's been happening several times recently.
Is there a forum guide on installing the OTA/full version of ICS? Would I basically bring it to stock bootloader and ROM then use AfterOTA to flash the new bootloader and recovery? Sorry for the n00bish questions, every device seems to use different methods and when I didn't start with the thing until after someone else did the initial stuff I dont want to mess it up, this is a really nice tablet. Thanks for the help, You guys are the best on here.
Yep, you are basically taking it back to stock then using afterOTA to install the new bootloaders but most importantly get root access and a new open recovery...
Is the best way to go stock by using afterOTA? Or should I just try a different method on the forums?
It clearly states on AfterOTA's first post that it does not work on custom roms and only the OTA so yes, download the ota ruu and install it. Then run afterota and you will be able to install a custom rom after that. Or use blackthunders apx tool to update the bootloader.
yes, that was an over sight on my part, I was excited to update everything so easily. where/what is the OTA RUU ? sorry to be a pain but if you could just point me to a forum guide on going completely stock I would appreciate it. I don't see anywhere to get the OTA update.zip file I need to flash, I found this here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878 is this the post I need? and do I need the update or the full package? does it matter if I use the honeycomb full package if I am just going to use afterOTA to install an ICS bootloader and recovery?

help with update from 4.2 to 4.2.1 stock rooted

Hello. I searched the forums and came up empty.
I have a stock 4.2 ROM I rooted. When the system says its updating and rebooting. It kicks me into recovery screen and does not up date.
Do I have to unroot and re lock the boot loader?
I know I'm probably just missing something stupid.
Thanks for any help.
If you were on a custom rom before then your recovery is probably messed up and not the stock recovery. Otherwise I do not know what it is that can be doing it because every time I would flash back to stock 4.2 I would get prompted to update to 4.2.1 and as well to note I have an unlocked bootloader and from what I have read before being rooted shouldnt make a difference.
Perhaps you could grab the toolkit and flash the stock recovery that is in it to your N7 and see if that helps you out.

Crap. I was hoping I didn't have to reflash. I dont have a custom ROM never have. I just unlocked this and rooted.
I'm going to try the toolkit when I get home revert from stock to stock, see if the update takes then.
Thanks for you help.
Edit. Looks like I have twrp recovery. This is my issue I assume. Is there a zip I can just flash to update
I have removed twrp back to stock recovery. Now when system reboots to install update, it stats the update then gives me a error. No error code just error. I really dont want to wipe my device as I have it setup for my liking.
I'm using wug's toolkit
I think (...and may be wrong...), but if you modified anything in /system (deleted any of the stock apps and/or updated them) it won't update either.

Thank you so much.
root keeper and I'm back in business.

Unlocked BL, but can't install custom recovery

So my friend and I both have razr M's.
His was bought through a 3rd party and already had the bootloader unlocked, but was updated to the latest VZW update for the M.
I cannot for the life of me get a custom recovery to install.
First I tried the traditional "fastboot flash recovery" method. It sends the recovery without error messages, but attempting to reboot into the recovery only yields the green android with the exclamation point coming out of his chest.
I next tried to even just boot the recovery image from the bootloader, which gave me the operation not permitted error.
Any ideas as to why this may be happening? I feel like I'm pretty android-savvy, but this is stumping me. My initial guess would be that it was because he took the latest update on the stock recovery, but even then his bootloader is still unlocked.

Are you rooted?
Use rom manager it is easy. See my goodies.
Or use my restore - a link in goodies too.

That particular phone is not rooted, although the bootloader is unlocked.
Thanks for the links, so I should be able to use the RSD lite to restore your version that has CWM as well? If so, that should get it up and running so I can at least obtain root from the recovery.

Unable to update after root

Hi
I am running on LMY47V, Version 5.1.1.
About 2 days ago i got an update of 20 MB which got downloaded into my device but failing to apply.
Whenever i Click the Restart and Install button the device gets restarted and goes into ClockworkMod Recovery v6.0.4.7 asking to fix the root access which is possibly lost . I tried both the options Yes and No then the device gets started with no update.
Then the same notification comes in asking me to Restart and Apply.
I have rooted and applied CM Recovery recently and this never happened to me before rooting.
It is normal that OTA updates do not work when rooted. There are a few workarounds, but they are not super easy (you can normally install the updates manually using adb-tools if I remember correctly).

Yeah, to use the OTA updates you need to be completely stock. Stock ROM, locked bootloader, no root and stock recovery.

Bootloader does not have to be locked, but you are correct about everything else.

Oh, that's good to know.
I went through this over the weekend (flashing back to stock in order to get the OTA update).
I cannot say enough good things about this Nexus Root Toolkit by WugFresh: http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/
Made it super simple for me to flash back to stock, get that OTA update, and then flash TWRP right back (so that I could enable 4G/LTE again).

I strongly recommend you learn how to use fastboot. You would not have had to flash back to stock to update. You could have flashed the system and boot images and been done with it. NRT is a good tool but you have much more flexibility if you understand what you're doing with fastboot.
