I've got some crazy wireless issues going on. Take a look at the screen capture while running WiFi Analyzer. I have two access points - the red one and the darker blue one. The light blue one is my neighbor's.

I have a myTouch 4G running Gingerbread v2.3.4. I'm rooted and running the Virtuous Unity kernel (v2.6.35.14-UNITY-V9-gdfc9a05). I have tried two radios (v26.13.04.19 and v26.11.04.03) and get the same results. My wife's myTouch 4G is completely stock and has the v26.13.04.19 radio. Her wireless looks completely normal. I also did a signal test on my laptop and it also looks normal so I don't believe my access points have any issues.
Any ideas what might be going on here?
I'm starting to sound like a broken record here, but do you do a FULL wipe between flashes? Not wiping the system partition (along with everything else) can cause all finds of funny stuff to happen.

Do you mean I should do a full wipe after installing a new kernel or after installing a new radio? Or both?

You didn't try to flash a radio through cwm, did you? And no full wipe between roms. That includes going into mounts and storage and formatting /system

No, I flashed the radios via hboot.
I did a Nandroid backup, full wipe, then restored. Unfortunately, still having the same zig-zag wireless signal issues. I'm definitely open to any other suggestions.
I have been working on this issue and uncovered a few additional details...
I'm currently running the rooted stock GB. As I mentioned earlier, I installed the Unity kernel so I could overclock. I did a full wipe and restored a Nandroid backup from before I installed the Unity kernel. This left me as close to stock as I could get without unrooting. Same signal issues exist.
I then did a complete wipe and installed CyanogenMod v7.1.0. In this configuration, the wireless signal doesn't dip at all. It behaves like it should. But if I do a full wipe and restore the rooted stock GB and stock kernel, the problem comes back.
I also think I am incorrectly associating the radio to the wifi. I searched and what I read was that the radio is responsible for the phone and camera functionality. Is this correct? If so, is the kernel what contains the wifi drivers?
Any ideas what else I can try?
Still trying to make sense of this...
For lack of anything else to try, I decided to unroot and try the stock, unrooted Gingerbread v2.3.4. I did a full wipe and flashed the stock ROM and the wireless is working correctly. The wireless signal strength looks normal. It doesn't have the crazy peaks and valleys it had in the screen capture above. I went ahead and re-rooted, did a full wipe, and then put the same rooted v2.3.4 back on. The wireless signal strength meter still looks good. At this point, it seems if I restore my backup, it's going to be jacked up again.
I'm at a bit of a loss. Is my backup bad? Something else going on?
I don't see this being a hardware problem or it probably wouldn't work at all.
Try restoring to stock 2.2.1, using gfree to s-off, then using the menus to update to the newest firmware. After that you can use hboot to flash recovery and engineering hboot.
Then you can do a fastboot wipe and install the newest cm7 nightly and see how it does.
One point to stress, again and again, because people seem to miss that information:
Radio (baseband) has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with WiFi.
And to your problems: if you're flashing stock ROM and WiFi behaves correctly - your problem is software, not hardware.

Definitely a good point to emphasize. I assumed "radio" applied to more than it actually did. For the benefit of others down the road, this is from the glossary on XDA's wiki.

Agreed. At this point in the game, I'm reasonably sure that I'm dealing with a software problem. The issue, however, is that if I wipe and flash back to the rooted version of the stock ROM, I still have the wifi signal problem. If I wpie and flash the non-rooted version of the same stock ROM, the wifi signal is normal/correct. I'm using the ROMs from this thread.
Just doesn't make sense to me...
Could you try to flash the stock ROM, root it manually and see if it changes anything in WiFi reception?

I think I have the same kind of signal in college. There are so many wireless networks that it is hard to tell what is going on in the wifi analyzer. I have the stock 2.3.4 unrooted ROM because I was going to return the phone for a broken speaker. I think this problem is causing me to disconnect from the network. It is annoying, but the good thing is that it does not happen at home. Do you think that it is from something that was left over from my previous MIUI ROM or does a pda15img clear everything?

That will clear everything but there's certainly no harm in doing another factory reset through stock recovery or hboot. One thing that may help is changing some of the settings on your home router to differentiate it from the others, like trying a different channel or something.
Some of the more experienced guys can probably give you more specific information.

Without further adieu:
First I recommend flashing some bits of the RUU. I have repackaged the RUU to remove recovery, hboot, and system. Download Here and place PG05IMG.zip on your root of your SD. Boot into hboot and flash. This will wipe your data and update your radio.
Now...
Download BoltOfPhotons_Hybrid_v1.2
Flash via CWR like any other ROM (DON'T FORGET to BACKUP and WIPE FIRST!)

I notice the PG05IMG.zip is a little bigger than just the radio but much smaller than the whole thing. What else is in there besides the new radio?

Radio, looks like modem firmware? Kernel which is really irrelevant since it's included in the ROM. Just basically too the hboot and recovery out so it doesn't affect ability to root. Also took out system since I want to modify it for the ROM anyway. Left everything else as it most likely is important for the "fixes" in this RUU. The most important thing here is the radio update.

Everytime I attempt to take a snapshot at night or in a not-so good-lighted area, the picture comes out extremly dark as if the Flash isn't working properly. I tried the Synergy Rom, MikFroyo 1.3 and 1.4 and stock rooted 2.3.3 rom and I got the same results each time. I then restored back to one of my 2.2 backups. After that finished flashing and loading up, i took a picture. The picture came out correctly.
I flashed my wife's Evo to Synergy and still got a dark screen/photo. I flashed her phone to the stock 2.3.3 rom and took a picture and got another dark photo.
I restored my 2.2 nandroid and took a picture and the picture came out great.

A Lot of times a 2.2 kernel will cause camera issues. IDk if that your problem but maybe use the official GB kernel.

I didn't change any kernels. What I was saying is that when I revert back to a 2.2 rom which in my case was my nandroid, the camera took excellent pics. However, when I flash to a 2.3 rom and take a pic the picture is really dark. This is happening on my wife's evo as well.

And, I missed it, but you don't have this problem with older 2.1/2.2 ROMS?

Hi q.
Perhaps you already tried this & since I haven't made a successful install as of yet I only have a GB/sense 3.5 solution, but all the same:
Menu / About phone / software / more.
This, most likely, should tell you which radio you're currently using.
Additionally if I understand this correctly, which of course doesn't have to be the case, then the radio handles all radio based communication, including Wi-Fi & std. Phone calls.
If that is, indeed, the case then, given your behavioral description, the radio must be, at least partially functioning.
Then I'd look for another reason.
Did you check mobile data settings?
Regards
Elo.

Hi Polar67,
I checked and found my Baseband version. So I do have a radio :tick:
Now I'm trying to figure out why I can't detect any networks. Is it possible that this radio doesn't work in Australia? When I flash Blackout ICS incredible v3.0.0, could it have replaced the radio?

Roms don't replace radios. Each rom comes with it's own ril, which communicates with the radio.
Aosp roms have one standard ril, and should not be changed.
Sense roms however, if you want you can flash different rils.
Now, regarding your issue. Did it work with your previous rom? Yes? Then it may not be the radio.
Search the thread, perhaps there are others with the same issue, I can't remember.
If the same happens with other roms, then it could be the radio.

Hello all, I'm looking to find a way to force hands-off activation on a custom ROM.
So far I have tried most of the custom ROMs available for our device but because my carrier is Credo I still can't get 4G to work even if it's supported. I've tried changing APNs and copying the activation.apk from the stock ROM to system but I can't seem to get it working. Any ideas?

Well..yes. That was the point of this thread. To get it working on other ROMs.
I'm trying to force my phone to do the hands-free activation(what sprint/credo does) on a custom ROM so I can get 4G working. I have flashed various other ROMs and lost my 4G then subsequently got it back by doing the hands-free activation so I know that's what I need to do.There has to be a way to do it on non-tw,not all sprint/credo phones use touchwiz.

Well..yes. That was the point of this thread. To get it working on other ROMs.
I'm trying to force my phone to do the hands-free activation(what sprint/credo does) on a custom ROM so I can get 4G working. You didn't specify "other Roms" as purely AOSP/CM based. I was under the impression that you meant Roms like Sacs, Triforce, Etc.

My apologies, I wasn`t clear enough.
The ROMs I have used are: triforce, paranoid, google edition, xtremperia, aosp(3 different ROMs) carbon, slim-bean and nowiz.

Why don't you so a backup and just install a tw ROM then do the code later just restore to your original ROM?

Tried that as well but the activation doesn't stick after a flash. I'll get 3G but not 4G. Also tried backing up APNs and doing a restore but no dice.
Forgive me for adding the obvious, but have you tried to update profile and prl via the settings menu? All I have ever done in the past.

Yeah tried that for the TW ROMs but theres's no option on AOSP or CM based ROMs
Did you ever figure this out?

I'm currently trying to activate my sprint htc one m8 that has the Google Play Edition ROM. Currently I cannot make calls or send/receive text messages. I know it's a different phone, but if you found a solution, then that might give me a good idea of what I should try.

Is the nandroid back up the same thing as making a backup in TWRP recovery? If so, I did that. I also flashed the rooted stock rom and activated my phone. I then restored from the backup I made. Now, I'm back on Google Play Edition ROM and I can now make/receive call/messages, but I cannot get any cellular data! Any ideas on that?

You have to have your APN set to that of your carrier.

No. Clean flash. Activation is done at Setup. That's why you make the backup, then you can just restore after you activate it.
hello
First off, I have modded with cyanogenmod quite some time ago.
I have kept that up date (cause of their nice update program), but I have never updated the carrier roaming lists (PRL?). My coverage seems to be crappy and I think it just may have to do with my newbishness.
I am running Cyanogenmod 11-20141112-SNAPSHOT-M12-jflte
Sprint PRL = 55018
is there a retard guide for me to easily update.... any suggestions or links would be great. I have spent over an hour searching google, but I am obviously using the wrong keywords and I am getting frustrated. I keep stumbling across other models / mods and I am fearful of breaking something....
Thanks for your time

You'll need to flash a touchwiz based ROM to do a PRL update.

thanks for the detail.
I dont mean to be a turd, but there seems to be a whole lot of TouchWiz variants. Is there a specific one to use?
thanks, and best regards

Any TouchWiz should be fine, but go with stock if you want to make sure

Yes, unless you use stock rooted. But that doesn't matter since all you are doing is flashing stock ROM, updating PRL and then restoring cyanogenmod

sorry for being a pain, but as I dont do this often...
if I flash the zip here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2257503
this will put me back to TouchWIz original (plus root)
then I will follow the rest of the steps
(sorry for being dense, I was incorrectly thinking that I would loose the ability to use clockworkmod recovery / restore functions once I flashed the touchwiz rom and I would have to root before I could restore cyanogen, but that is firmware not ROM..... )
Its late and I have been up forever...
Thanks
I need some help.
Using Clockworkmod recovery V 6.0.4.7.
Tried using http://galaxys4root.com/galaxy-s4-rooted-stock-roms/ >>>> "Download Galaxy S4 rooted Stock ROM Sprint SPH-L720 Latest MF9 "
checked the filesize and the md5 sum, all good.
WHen I tried to use CWM to install zip from SDcard1 it gave me an error (missing 4 of 5) and aborted the installation.
I tried to search somewhere else to find a .zip that would bring the Sprint SPH-L720 back to stock, however they all seem to not have .zip for CWM recovery however make use of ODIN (which i cannot use as I dont have a windows computer, I use linux)
I want to go back to stock to update the prl before going to cyanogenmod 12.1
any suggestions ?
thanks
qu1nn
Rough night here.
somehow I lost clockworkmod recovery and ended up being still rooted with stock mf9 recovery, but I still had cyanogenmod 11 working; I recovered by installing clockworkmod application; > model > flash clockworkmod recovery > shutdown.
In the midst of that fiasco I say this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2296167
which implies that keeping the PRL as up to date is not so required.....
so I bailed after several different attempts to install a ROM that would allow me to do a prl update.
I flashed the latest cyanogenmod nightly 12.1 and I am off and running.
