Note or galaxy nexus? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

I am considering buying a note or a nexus what you think is the best at the moment? Or maybe other phones??
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

If you can handle a 5.3" screen. I can't think of any reason you should go for Nexus.
For now Nexus only advantage is ICS, which note will have it anyday soon.

Note:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445168
If the GNEX had Gingerbread, it would not warrant a second look. The camera is terrible.
ICS is the only advantage to the GNEX. Outside of that, the Note is superior in every way.
(I used to own a GNEX and sold it for the Note for reference)

Note by far, better processor, memory slot plus 16gb internal, better screen, better camera do I need to go on. .. Only.let down no ics but that will be corrected soon
I havery had both and note is 100 times better

You are posting this question in the note forum so your asking people that most likely haven't used a nexus.
I've got a note and love the larger screen size plus using expandable sd card storage is a judge plus in my eyes. I use a 64gb cars so have plenty of storage for all i need.
I haven't used a nexus but going on specs alone, screen size and sd storage was more then enough reason for me to go with the note. The stylus is a plus too butt i don't use it heaps so to me its not that important.
The camera on the note is great for a mobile phone and from what I've heard the nexus is not as good.
Apart from ICS on the nexus i don't see anywhere else it beats yhe note unless you want a smaller screen.

I think from the specs of both phones that the Galaxy Note is clearly the flagship for Samsung. Look at all the specs including the digitizer and s pen integration and it is clear that once the Galaxy Note gets ICS, the Nexus will be left behind. I mean the GNote can access the Russian GPS system for goodness sakes...!
I had a Nexus S for a short period of time before returning it and the truth is I like some of the touch wiz and Samsung add ons that the Nexus will not have. To me pure android is plain android. Just my perspective though.
If you can deal with the larger size, I say the Galaxy Note is more advanced, more versatile phone. It is clearly the device of 2011 although the Nexus got most the press.

I traded the Galaxy Nexus for a Note. The GNex is a good phone, but the main selling point was ICS. Once I got past the greatness that is ICS, I realized there just wasn't anything else special about it.

Turn GPS on while standing in Russia?
The GLONASS is used in Russia. The Note can access those satellites.
Don't mean to sound like a jerk, but this is how it works, right?

I thought the GNote uses the Russian GPS satellites in orbit to augment the readings and positioning by the 24 GPS satellites that the US has in orbit to help get faster more accurate positioning no matter where you are in the world?
Any experts on how the GNote utilizes Glonass?
Edit: Updated with link, pretty cool! Although we do not have a snapdragon processor we have Glonass!!! Galaxy Nexus...not so much...

The inclusion of GLONASS and Barometer is the nail in the coffin for anyone on the fence about the Note. It's a magnificent device - so much better than the GNEX, it's not even funny.

Gnex
- If u cant handle any screen size more than 4.3 inch ( technically 4.6 )
- Want ICS now
Gnote
- Really for everything more
- Biggest adv -Screen, stylus, camera and GPS
- Dont forget u have an sdcard slot ( extra 64gb of storage... )

I have a galaxy nexus and wish I could get a note but am on T-Mobile USA. I was hoping that the at&t version would be pentaband like the s2 skyrocket but from what I have read, its not.
IMO the note is the perfect device and I'm jealous of all of you. I might pick one up just to use as a ultra portable wifi tablet and tether to my nexus.

Was contemplating a nexus, after it was delayed, had to get a phone, so settled for the note. After couple of months, now I can't absolutely love it. First phone I don't feel like replacing. Played withca friends Nexus, and now find other than ICS, the note blows it away in every other aspect.

Not true. For instance there's awesome notification LED on the Galaxy Nexus and NFC (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfkFgtoQtFQ for ideas what you can do with NFC, other than the obvious Google Wallet of course).

Nexus s is a step down in my opinion,
No fm radio
No micro sd slot
Gorilla glass is missing too... (even though i still use a phantomskinz screen protector anyway)
Also, my friend has a nexus s, it doesnt feel as good, and its april and he still doesnt have the 2.3.3 update.

Ahahaha
@OP No for sure not, and there is many threads like this here.
General public decided that Nexus S is not a better choice in no direction over the SGS.
Now its SGSI vs SGSII where there are advantages of SGSII much clearer but wouldnt make me to switch to it.
I change my phone when there is some improvement for me. <<< for me.
As the SGSI is pretty fast the SGSII has no real advantage for me (not playing games) and the design I have now I am happy with it. Also there comes the pain with new phone new software etc.
For me one and only deciding factor will be the screen resolution. (now the htc sensation)
Micro SD missing on ANY phone is an Automatic Dealbreaker for me. (I don't care if the phone can make me coffee in the morning, and have a pizza on the table when I come home)
Heck even some of my old Krusty RAZR Phones laying around have Micro SD support. I'm not gonna give that up just because some company wants to save a few bucks.
Galaxy S vs Galaxy S II will be the real debate this year. The only thing that concerns me about the Galaxy S II is battery life, but we'll see how that turns out after the phone is launched...
Nexus S and Galaxy S are virtually the same. Galaxy II should be the object of desire now..
Thanks a bunch for the reply guys, surprisingly the nexus S owners have pretty much similar opinions about the exchange, plus id have to pay a little more then a $100 for the transaction, anyhow, the thing thats particularly itching me right now is the factory built EXT 4 FS that Nexus S has or the pretty much similar outlook and speed to the best custom rom Cyanogen mod 7 on the Galaxy S, not that its not good on the Galaxy but it has its glitches whereas nothing of that sort on the Nexus S, am i right to think this?

Yep, I can't decide either.
Nexus S (Samsung i9023, ~€400)
+ pure Android, fast, frequent and official updates
+ officially moddable
- big and heavy
+ LCD display
- no SD card slot
- no fm radio
- no GPS (I sent mine back after a few days because the GPS was so bad that it might as well not have been there.)
Galaxy S (Samsung i9000, ~€340)
- TouchWiz, updates depend on the community
+ for all intents and purposes just as moddable
+ very light and compact-looking
- AMOLED display with PenTile matrix
+ SD card slot
+ fm radio
+ surprisingly decent GPS
Both have Voodoo sound.
If you already have an SGS, stick to it, the NS is basically the same phone. It'll stay on the market for a while and only get cheaper, so if community support for the SGS should really wane, you can still get it, and probably for less. At least wait a few weeks till it's clear if the SGS2 is a worthy heir - then choose between that and the NS.
@fallenguru,
Thanks , with your advice and the majority of everyone who replied here, ive made my mind to stick with galaxy s for a while atleast until NS is cheaper

Really? Why?
Because the SGS1's PenTile matrix more than negates any positive properties its SAMOLED screen might have, at least for me. See http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news...exus-ones-screen-science-color-and-hacks.ars/ for pics and technical details.
I guess it depends on an individual's perception. Some people hear the compression artefacts in mp3s, some don't. (I mostly don't.) Some don't see or don't mind the artifacts PenTile matrix produces, others do. Unfortunately, I do.

Should I buy this

or should I wait for the Galaxy Nexus.... I can't decide.....

Just consider two things :
1, do you really need A pen?
2, do you really need a super big phone screen?
If you answer is no then buy Galaxy Nexus.

Thinking, software vs. hardware? Hardware on Note is 5x better, but Galaxy Nexus has new and best software 3 months earlier than galaxy Note. I'll choose Note, because i don't have rush to get the Icecream Sandwich. Just my opinion...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
Consider also three other things :
- Do you need large storage (Nexus deos not have a microSD card)
- Do you need radio FM (Nexus does not have it)
- Do you need ICS (Note does not have it ... yet)
Well, I don't need a pen but I think I would have used it (seems like a good idea)
and big screen is nice, since I always carring my phone in the belt..
- I have also not used up my 16 GB SD card on my Nexus One, so I probably won't need more than 16GB but nice to have the opportunity..
- No need for FM radio..
- This point is where I am not sure.. ICS really looks nice and not having to wait for Samsung to get new releases is also be positive..
Damn theses decisions.....
BTJ
Get the Note for everyone who has moved to a larger screen says they would never go back to a smaller one. The stylus and the SD slot significantly increases the power of the Note and Gingerbread is very capable whilst waiting for ICS which will surely come.
It's a question of hardware versus software
Nexus is a Galaxy S 2 with software improvements and slightly different hardware. Design and look has been updated. Larger screen size is because there are no longer buttons on the bottom. These buttons are now in the OS. So you still have about the same size screen maybe slightly more because the width is slightly larger. Nexus does not have 3G data bands. It does have HSPU and LTE as well as 2G data and 3G voice. The processor and graphics hardware is different. Possibly better than Galaxy S 2. It is still 1.2 ghz dual core. It has Android 4.0, the latest and greatest software, with a host of new features. Nexus has Lotus glass and a higher resolution screen than GS2 as well as NFC.
The Note has a significantly larger 5.3" screen, 1.4 ghz dual core processor, and stylus. It has 3G data & voice as well as HSPU. You will probably be able to get Android 4.0 and almost all its features through a custom rom within a month or two after launch.
The rule is buy for hardware. You will be able to put Android 4.0 on the Galaxy S 2 shortly. I already own a Galaxy S 2 and the hardware is very similar so I would not be getting a whole more with the Nexus. If you do not have the GS2, the Nexus would be a good upgrade for you. With the Note I do have better hardware than GS2, so I'm buying that. One other consideration is size. The Note is big. Really big.
Amen. I didn't regret my purchase for a single second.
And I don't mind to wait another two or three months for ICS so the first bugs are already ironed out.

LOL! You're just plain mean
I'm watching the video of the Note release and right in the beginning they also mention the Nexus, and the fact that the Nexus is being released with Ice Cream Sandwich at launch - why isn't the Note also being released on that platform? Makes me curious as to whether or not ICS will never come to the Note - I've already been involved in an innovative platform that never evolved (Garmin iQue 3600), I'm going to be very disappointed if the Note goes the same way....
I've been debating between these 2 and I think it's a no brainer.
If the size of the note isn't an issue for you then it's the note, it's a bigger and high res screen and has far more grunt CPU and GPU.
I haven't yet seen proof that the nexus can display 720p video on full screen (on honeycomb the buttons could not be hidden apart from with a root app).
The only thing the nexus has over it is ICS and I would be amazed if the note didnt get that this year.
"Most importantly, though, the brains of the operation is the OMAP4460 application processor which has two Cortex-A9 cores clocked at 1.2GHz — quite fast, certainly, but it isn’t the 1.5GHz Exynos that we were hoping for.
It is because of the OMAP4460 processor that the Galaxy Nexus will only have the PowerVR SGX540 GPU, an antiquated beast from 2007 that can actually be found underneath the hood of last year’s Nexus S, and in the Droid Bionic. The SGX540 is very weak compared to the Mali-400 GPU found in Samsung’s Exynos SoC (the one that powers the Galaxy S II), and it’s positively snail-paced against the Apple A5′s SGX543MP2."
Frankly, I'm not even tempted by the Nexus or the SGS II compared to the Note, I'm just really curious why they didn't use ICS for two phones being rolled out at the same time.

No, I know the Note is first, but if you watch that video, the European release of the Nexus was happening at the same time - so they're very close in release date.
funny that they say rollout is 29th and today (28th) many people already got their note

Significant and Suitable Upgrade from SGS2!

I do have a biased opinion about having a nice large screen. I guess I prefer (Phablets but still undecided on how I feel about the Galaxy Note 2 and the DNA as the size is a little bit large. That doesn't mean it is a NO from me just yet)
So if you are like me. You have had your SGS2 since launch. Soon after this, they released the Galaxy Note 1 and then SGS 3. Both have advantages over the S2 for different reasons but still not *UNIQUELY DIFFERENT* enough from the SGS2 to make the change for myself. I am still keeping in mind that both of these said phones "might be better" especially the SGS 3, however just not quite enough to push me over the edge. In fact it somewhat stalled and got me thinking if Samsung were pushing these phones out fast then it is only going to be a matter of a couple of months before we see something that does *WOW* me.
Well I was right, as you will see below is a list of the new upcoming phones that are all awesome and worthy of a genuine upgrade over the SGS2, Don't get me wrong I was very tempted to upgrade earlier but managed to hold back because of the awesome and continued community support for our phone.
Below is the list of phones I have my eye on, just in case anybody out there wasn't aware of these options. I am here today to show you (After googling and reading forums which could have been done by you, but let's face it some people are just lazy + I want to hear what you guys think!)
HTC Droid DNA(Butterfly)
Samsung Galaxy Note 2
LG Nexus 4
Sony Xperia Odin / Yuga(Dogo) Some more info about the rumoured Sony devices
Here is a rough comparison chart of the Nexus 4 / Note 2/ HTC DNA. Unfortunately the Sony devices are still up in the air so it is not covered. Here is another comparison but this time only between the Note 2 and the DNA

I just wish the Nexus 4 had a 32GB option, 4G and a larger battery, if it was removable then you could at least slap a bigger one in there!
One reason to get the note 2...

Oh god, please tell me why? I don't see any reasons now: my note is still snappy (thanks to jb leaks), there are no games, that aren't playable (my main concern for every phone is shadowgun dead zone and it runs smoothly).
BUT with note I still have a monster battery, monster display and monster storage.
Really, nexus 4 is a nice phone. But I can't find any reasons to change galaxy note, HTC one x, s3 or even galaxy nexus to nexus 4. I mean, if you are looking for a new phone, go and grab it, if you already have one, just pass it

Ok here are my reasons:
1) nexus 4 uses gorilla glass 2. Search a bit about it. It is actually thinner and when you swipe your finger on screen, because of the elimination of the extra layer, you feel so nice and it is like touching the icon by your finger. You should try to find out what I mean.
2) 2 GB ram and quad core cpu is great. You think your note is monster now but after working with nexus 4 you will change your opinion. Just i.e. I feel flying when I use chrome compared to note.
3) battery is great here. Near 6 hr screen on time under super heavy use. Wifi on all the time, music, surfing, game etc.
4) Most recent upgrades of android. This one worth much more than anything. Imagine that in May we are gonna get key lime pie 5.0 and you are still on 4.1
How much more do you need?
By the way ips is much better than amoled. With amoled and the over saturation your eyes get tired after a while but with ips no !

Can you tell us the reason why you're coming in the Galaxy Note section to tell to Note users (ie peoples who choosed to buy a Note) to buy another mobile ?
Seriously, go touch yourself in the N4 section, if Note users want to trade their mobile for a N4 or anything elses, i guess they'll be smart enough to go in the right section.
And my 2 cents, N4 sucks for me, no need of the hardware and i prefer a bigger screen + Spen.

Nexus 4 is a great phone. No one will deny that, but there is something many of the users here would agree with me on. And to let you see why, then i'm gonna answer all of your points here.
1. Samsung Galaxy Note II also use Gorilla Glass 2.
2. Samsung Galaxy Note II also have 2 GB RAM and a good Quad-core CPU.
3. The battery is much better on the Galaxy Note II.
4. Samsung Galaxy Note II also gets the latest releases thanks to XDA-Developers.
So, my question is then, why should anyone go from a Galaxy Note to a Nexus 4 instead of a Galaxy Note II?
And don't get me started on the multiview windows functionality that is actually a reason alone on why we Note users choose a phone like a Note over anything else.
Because if you sell your note and add 30 $ or euro more you can get a perfect phone but for note 2 you should pay around 150 euro more.
Besides, lets face it, google support is better or xda? Xda without source code can not do anything ! And samsung sucks at releasing source codes !

i'm playing a lot ingress lately and i tell you my note performance way better then nexus 4 .
but the nexus 4 is a beautiful device - but i would not trade
Something all these Galaxy Note wanabe's seem blind to is the s-pen ; it's not just about a larger than usual phone screen, but you can write on it...properly..with a pen...detailed stuff, useful stuff. If all you want is bigger Angry Birds then I'm sure one of the other 5" + screens are great but the Note is successful because it serves all the creatives out here who are not happy drawing with a fat finger. Maybe it's just me :cyclops:

Non removable battery is a deal breaker. Can you replace the battery without breaking something ?

Guys I had note for one year and liked it a lot but I just got my nexus 4 and sold my note. They have somehow almost the same price but guys I gotta tell you nexus 4 is a wonderful device and I just love it.
I really advice you to sell your note and buy this thing.
By the way smaller screen is even better and surprisingly somehow a relief, seriously !
Battery life is great great great ! I just felt to share my experience with you
Kudos

I had my Note for 15 months and LOVED it, best smartphone in the world BY FAR. Actually, I would say the ONLY REAL smartphone in the world as it was the only one actually USABLE.
I just upgraded to a Note II which is improved in literally *everything* but in the most important spec (display dimensions) and the least important one (looks. I liked much better the Note I).
The Note II has a smaller display in its shorter side and that's my ONLY gripe with it, I hate the fact that they went with the 16:9 aspect ratio and the fact that 5.5" 16:9 means a NARROWER display and that's why I initially hold off upgrading but after seeing IRL what 2GB of RAM really mean I instantly bought the Note II and sold the Note. BEST UPGRADE EVER (save for the stupid display aspect ratio...).
The Nexus 4? It's an Apple-like P.O.S. which with its MORONIC non-removable battery, ridicolously insufficient non-expandable internal memory and small display is totally *useless* and *worthless* to me.
a device with at least large screen (>5inch), s-pen, tablet rom (with all features Notes is offering), nice design (quare, not s3-like) would get my consideration, a bit, otherwise none will be comparable with the incredble Note
the sucking hardware does not matter, at least IMO, even a Nexus 40 will be said like this OP when the Nexus 41 comes, you should know how to use your device, or you will sell your Nexus 40 soon for a Nexus 41
it is crazily rediculous for these words in Note area
there is no way on this earth you could convince me to buy LG hardware.
Also No micro SD = deal breaker.
Thanks for your expression but No thanks.
Nexus 4 is not 5.3 inch. It does not have SPen. No multi-windows. The display does not show true black. Blurry scroll--Amoled screen refreshes so much faster than lcd. Those are the reasons I stick to my beloved Note until Note 3.

Not a big deal at all, 5 minutes.
As a current Note I owner I've tested N4 for 2 full days. I can only say 2 good things about it: the uber sexy body and smoothness. Apart from it - no SD card and a worse camera are a no-go. Before testing it, I used CM10.1 on my Note but after a month or so I decided I was missing Samsung's touch too much (I like the additions and a bit nicer GUI). So I installed RR ICS V12 and completely happy now.
I also realized that Note is too big for me - the one-handed operations feel like on the edge of dropping it all the time! So I skipped Note2 and waiting for S4 now.
I totally get what you all are saying. I was very doubtful too, especially about screen size but now I am sure that for a phone it should definitely be below 5 inch. Now I am sure that the concept of phablet is crazy.
I will get a tablet soon and I think this is right. Big size of note 1 was really annoying for me.
About note 2, I agree that it is way better than note 1 and the reduce in its width was a clever action. But guys! Direct update from google is something that no one can overlook it.
S pen had no use for me at all and I am sure if someone really use s pen he or she should get note 10.1 or note 8 not this because it is way too small for using a pen on

Note3

Note 3, and this advertising could mean we get a choice of 3 different sizes, I would be very happy with this, as I would like a size like the mega, what do you guys think?

I'm waiting for Note 4. Don't see many differences between Galaxy S4 and Note 2. Will stay at my Note 2 at least until september 2014 when there is a Note 4 come out.
Lol. No differences? It hasn't even been announced yet.

It will be almost the same as Galaxy S4. You did not notice that Galaxy S2 almost same as Galaxy Note? And Galaxy S3 almost the same thing as Galaxy Note 2. I can't find ANY uniqueness in Galaxy S4 for me.
The s3 and Note 2 are nowhere close to being the same. Maybe looks but inside are not the same.
I wonder if we will see something really amazing, exclusive to the note 3? Thinking back the note 2 had the air view first, any ideas? And does anyone think 2 or 3 different sizes? Very exciting
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Different sizes is going to be big flop concept. Just a couple of variants like s4 is enough, screen size should be same. What I am expecting that note 3 will have smoothness from note 2 and features from s4. In short, it will be a Job Finished of what it would have been in the s4.
You are right

Galaxy S3 and Note2 are the same, inside to. Same exynos 4212 q core chip. only big diference i se is S-pen and screen size. and only 1 gig ram in S3 3g version 2 gig in 4G verersion.
But one exiting thing with S4 4G (I9505) version is Snapdragon chipset, same as s4 google edition, and i thing i saw someone making dual boot google edition and samsung stock rom
I'm going to go out on a limb here and gamble, and say the Note 3 will have at least 2 sizes, and be different to the s4,if you think about it, the mega is not too different to the s4, so I can't see a big presentation showing this, could you see them showing a mega with only a few different things to the mega! Not me, this isn't going to be a apple presentation with only a few differences like the iPhone 3, then the 3s, then the iphone 4, then the 4s.

As long as they don't follow the idiots copying Apple's worst ideas like frigging integrated batteries, no expandable storage with small or very expensive internal memory and scrap metal cases I would buy a Mega-sized Note III the day it's available even if NOTHING but the display size changes from the Note II.
I don't think they will change the battery, and memory card slot, that would be suicidal, by the way the one thing that will stop me getting this phone, AND I mean the only reason is if it has the same flash player as the s4, awful experience, the note 2 has the best internet experience, even the HTC one, built in flash player is awful, I use a football streaming website and only the note 2 it plays smooth, no lag or stuttering, all from the default browser, not chrome, and I tested the mega as well, and same thing, so the s4, mega and HTC one, all have awful flash player experience.

Try SopCast. I have many third party channels in my country, and can see all football matches. Works perfect with Note 2 and S4.

Actually, I already lost count of the S4 variants. One comes out every week I do hope Samsung refrains from this on the Note 3. But I do agree that 2 variants is more than enough. Screen size will certainly increase. That, is almost certain. It would be suicidal not to when the competition will be releasing phablets with screens around 6".

Right on! :good: I played with the Huawei Ascend Mate a bit last weekend and loved its 6.1" screen. I also realized that moving from 5.5" to 5.7" will be irrelevant. I'll have to move to 6" to notice any real world difference.

Phone Arena does it again! Yet another utterly pointless, irrelevant and totally devoid of any new info "leak".
I dont understand why ppl think the Note 3 will come in 3 sizes???? Why in the world would samsung do that? I dont think it makes any sense. I do however believe that it'll come in at least 2 variants, 1 snapdragon 800 version and 1 exynos 5 octa 2nd gen version. I also think that it'll be either a 5.7 inch or 5.9 inch display but most likely 5.7 inch due to all the latest rumors. Samsung needs to leave some room for future notes. If they release a note 6.4 like the Z ultra, next year it'll have to be bigger otherwise it'll be a downgrade in size. Bigger than 6.4 inch is a tablet period so 5.7-5.9 inch is pretty cool.
All the note 3 needs to do ( in my opinion) to be a worthy upgrade to the best mobile device ever ( note 2 of course) is to have a flawless performance and even more cooler and useful tricks with the Spen, have a 1000% lag free experience ( not like the S4 when it launched), slimmer and have less bezel all around with amazing battery life. I also HOPE that samsung ditches the stupid features like smart pause and smart scroll that are honestly gimmicky ( who really scrolls up and down a web page with their eyes...) and give us more very useful features like multi-window. Last but not least, please Samsung, ditch the S4, S4 mini, galaxy mega 6.3 design and introduce us to something more exciting, different and less predictable.
Just need to say that the scrolling the website, is not a gimmick, you will use it and not even realise after a while,
It's a shame that there is so much space wasted on the bezel, I would prefer Samsung on the home button, than above, and also it would be mad for them not to release a 6" size, version, could we see a notification home button like the G pro, phone,

It definitely is a gimmick. I had the S4 and never used it. Its much easier to scroll down the page with your fingers...Also i think 5.7 inches is perfect.

90 % of the time it did. But whats the point? my fingers are more accurate and faster then me looking up and down the page. Its a cool gimmick to show to friends...thats about it.
