[Q] More Memory after Root??

So I did the permaroot per the directions in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996 and it seemed to give me about 60MB more ram available?? Is that right? Has anyone else experienced this?
BTW Thanks to the poster for, this it worked like a charm and the directions were super easy to follow. and thanks to the great linking I was able to do the whole thing on my phone without even hooking it up to my PC!

Depends on the rom you are using..

Stock with the OTA update... how would the rom I am using make a difference in how much memory would be available before/after?
just curious

i would think ram should stay the same no matter which rom you have. now rom may change depending on how much memory the rom you go with takes up.... doesnt answer your original question just pointing out what ive normally seen. do you meen total ram or unused ram? just to clarify....

I meant the amount of available memory. I wonder why it changed, either way im happy so im not sure I really care what the reason is lol

Your RAM is constantly changing depending on the processes and services running at any given time. As far as available usable memory, that too will vary depending on what apps you have loaded/running. If you're like me and rooted, I run an app called Move2SD which allows me to move almost any app to SD; freeing up some available memory.
But every device will vary depending on apps installed and processes/services running.
I have 72 apps installed.

Can I just ask you why would you move apps to external sd card? Is there any benefit to it? Because I fail to see any. Apps2SD was useful on G1 with it's 90MB(or less) memory available to end-user but why in the world would you do it on the phone with 1GB of available memory?

Just simply a personal preference. No other reason. But I will add that when moving apps to my SD card (16GB class 6), it does free up some space. When all apps are installed on phone, memory available is around 900MB. With them on the card I have around 988MB free.
Might be a small amount overall but for me I like to keep things on my card.

My fault, what I mean to say was RAM, not storage space. I understand what you are saying as far as available storage on the device based on whatever changes are made by rooting, but what I meant was I have roughly 60 - 80 additional RAM since rooting... that I dont get lol

The specs of this do match the Hero pretty well, although I doubt the camera will ever work. Hopefully I'm wrong though.

Thats one rubbish little phone, not bad for a starter android, but HTC really did let me down this year, as my upgrade falls in april when all the new handsets came out, looks like its the Atrix or some other 2 core CPU,
Back on track, Yes the specs do look a lot like are little heros, a part from the better screen, and slight bump in cpu and ram, not much diffent, hopefully it will be ported, thing is, iv not used sense for ages since late 2.1 roms, and not sure if it will slow down are cpu/ram.
Also a lower battry at Li-Ion 1230 mAh are heros is Li-Ion 1350 mAh,
But hopefully im wrong !!!

Another issue I thought of aside from the camera might be the software, it's probably designed to utilise the extra RAM, like that Gratia/Legend port Sense might close after opening a resource intensive app. With some luck and skill from a talented Dev this can probably be sorted, I think.

If you read it and check the spec on the first post you can clearly se its sense 2.1 ANDROID 2.3
Shouldnt we be trying to get devs or help devs get the camera going for sense 2.2 before we try sense on 2.3......

Pretty sure it's from the "Wildfire S"-dump that means mdpi, and with a hero-kernel I thought I might have a shot, but I dont know how to repartition the internal memory, as the system-partition isn't big enough..

Wll if the system partition is not big enough, you want to install that on the SDcard? that would make the system pretty unstable if you ask me.

I only have a class-2 2GB sd-card, so I don't think that it would be a good idea

Petition: ZenExp Rev8 to be Re-opened

Ok, I've been waiting for this rom to be released and finding out that it was canned due to lack of interest. If enough votes we can get this rom reopened and released. This rom needs to be released so it can break the monotony of the Gingerbread and Honeycomb roms thats out there. ZenExp rev 7 was beautiful and I can't even imagine how Rev 8 would look like.
Please vote to have this roms released. Thank you.
P.S. I don't know no other way to state my vote, maybe by typing "please release"

This was one of my favorite roms. I use xtrSENSE now. The froyo and gingerbread roms are alright. I just don't really care for them. The sense based roms run so much smoother on my phone. I would love to see this reopened. I would definitely rock it.

Excellent people, keep it coming. We need to let MAK know that we love his work. GB is great but there are too many roms that look the same. I use now GSB and go back and forth with xtrSense/xtrRom. I would love to see this released. It'll be my everyday rom.
If this comes out I wouldn't get another phone. All these phones coming out with different UI and downloadable 3d ui's that the Eris can't handle. But if this comes out I'll be more than satified.

Hm, maybe I'm missing something, but I'm not sure I see whats so appealing about that UI. Hopefully this doesn't sound like I'm trying to rag on your idea, I'm not, trust me.

Its not my work, but somebody elses. Its simple and different from all those Gingerbread roms (they are all so plain). At least this rom has some themes that are appealing.
You may look on this thread on the 5th page for the zenexp rev7 to get an idea and some more info. but its the same screen shots I posted.

it is just sense themed launcher...but still cannot use Sense widgets

you get a higher resolution and a 768mb ram afaik. so you could have been keeping it. 768mb are enough for all apps and games at the moment..

Dont be so hard on yourself you are a sense user who cannot read so what ,

You don't even have cm or aosp working properly, a whole team hasn't managed to port sense over to the galaxy s 1. A sense port is in fact possible, but it will take ages and a great team to do the job, which I doubt will spent their time in which they could've made money on something a few users would kind of like. Get a professional team, pay them, and that is when you will see your proper working sense rom.
Don't get me wrong, there are people who would like to try, but they will come out disappointed, for they will have to create the entire processor sources and get them to work on a closed-source rom. Probability of a working sense rom are very low.
Miui on the other hand is a nice alternative, it looks good and is way easier to port.
Something I forgot to tell by the way, if your s2 has a tegra 2 processor and htc ever releases a phone with tegra 2, which is very unlikely, you are in luck. If you have a samsung processor you're out of luck, since htc probably won't ever use processors made by a concurrent.

Swap with ICS?

Just wondering, is it better if I set up a swap now-a-days on ICS? I heard some rumors of swap fixing low mem. issues and reboots; mainly on TexasIce's thread. Also, is it ICS that is allowing our phone to use this swap if it does? Thanks for the help guys

We could have always used swap, but it wasn't really necessary for GB. ICS ran fine without swap for me so and I would rather not use it. Try it with and without and see what works best for you.

That's just the thing. I wanted to hear what others had to say because I did not want to have to go through the whole reformatting my SD for no true reason. I have over 20 gbs I would be having to transfer back over and I would have to deal with the slow SD transfer speeds of ICS. (And yes, I know it is a bit faster with 3rd party app or via recovery mounting).

It's more than just a bit faster, my friend. With the paid version of multi-mount SD, you can hardly believe it. Lightning fast.

I havn't tried the Multi Mount but how much of a pain is it to go to the recovery and mount from there, I have a class 10 SD and recovery mounting I can get about 15-20 mb\s, but while in rom i'm limited to probably 3-4, Ill have to try out multi mount though.

Okay cool, a violin. But this isn't about Multi Mount. A bit off topic now. I'll try it and report back my findings (swap, not the app).

I have repartition with swap, tried any ICS roms, but couldn't find any different with that of no swap. Need some wider explanations, too...

With texasice's ICS ROM, before he added his reboot-fix, almost everyone faced reboots because of out-of-memory errors. Now, however, there is little to no need of a swap partition.

After trying it out, I can +1 this now. ICS seems to work the same w/out swap, no performance increase. I just brought this topic up because it was mentioned and I wanted to test the myth to see if ICS actually worked fast/stable with a swap.
Conclusion: Myth / belief busted, swap will not increase performance / stability when running ICS. Thanks guys

2.3.6 official rom is wonderfull, i prefer it, dont like cooked rooms
