Does anyone know of any official confirmation of ICS coming to the A500, and if so happen to know the slated release date?

Yup, it's official, the second Tuesday this week! So get ready. Seriously, there's lots of threads already. No need to start another one just yet.
Actually, I got mine the third Thursday of last week, didn't everyone?

It will come 'only after the new tabs are released, and 'only after they ship with ICS.

Depends on how you're rooted. You still get it if you're rooted and are on a stock ROM, it just won't install if you have CWM installed.
If you don't have CWM installed, you'll get ICS and no root and a new locked bootloader. Of course this assumes you're not running a custom (non-stock) ROM. If your not running a stock ROM then you'll never see it.
Anyway, take the OTA you'll loose root and will need to find an ICS exploit to root it.
"Take your stinking locked bootloader of my tablet you damn dirty ACER company"

Yes im runnning a custom ROM, where i can get normal acer ROM. I have checked acer website they only got 3.1 ROM on there website.

What's wrong with that? Load the 3.1 and it will automatically OTA to the latest version.

I'm pretty sure it will be released once there are another 58 'when is ICS OTA' threads started.

I propose replacing the "-THANKS" button to an "IDIOT" button. Then the caption can say: "The following people thinks you are an idiot for your post: "
That would definitely be useful.

I guess my question on this is why do we care so much about the release. I am pretty happy with HC and could not imagine what new features or tweaks ICS could have that would make me want it so bad...
Even if we did get an official update we would want a custom rooted ROM anyway
Geez

World Iconia Peace. and stop the when will we threads.

Questions about Froyo...

So I have rooted my N1 and have cyanogen, when froyo comes out and I decide i want to try it out, do i have to upload the original rom and then upgrade? or what is the best way to do it? so i can go back to cyanogen if i decide i like it better? trying to keep it as simple as possible...Thanks!!!
You don't have to do anything. It will come out as an OTA, Cyanogen will get his hands on it immediately if not a few days before the release and it will be incorporated into his ROM. You will likely have an updated version from him based on Froyo including all his extra goodies before the stock OTA is even 100% rolled out [they usually do it over a couple days].

FroYo will be released in June.
Google I/O is next Wednesday.

2.2 will be leaked next Wednesday.
We will get it.
And laugh at people who haven't rooted.
P.S. Is it just me or does this question come up a lot? And probably will increase over the next few days/weeks...

From Adobe. Check this out:
http://blogs.adobe.com/conversations/2010/04/moving_forward.html
We look forward to delivering Flash Player 10.1 for Android smartphones as a public preview at Google I/O in May, and then a general release in June. From that point on, an ever increasing number and variety of powerful, Flash-enabled devices will be arriving which we hope will provide a great landscape of choice.
Click to collapse
Flash requires 2.2, so a "general release" in June would mean that 2.2 would arrive sometime before then or concurrently.
Either way, we (rooters) will get both much, much earlier.
Thanks paul. I hope theres a ton of youtube videos that come from that convention.
I hope froyo has this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ae01yz5z99E
Also if you get bored, watch that video over again with closed captoning, very funny =)
I doubt google is bundling Flash with the AOSP code. That would mean adobe is making flash open source(not happening) or google is locking up android(not happening). With all the talk about decoupling the android OS, the chances of something like a video player being bundled to the main OS update happening are very very very minute.
Flash will be a separate .apk, but the OS will need the frameworks to support it.

It irritates me because he states it as a blatant fact, where it should be said as something less direct. It is a possibility.. but it isn't exactly set in stone to happen - especially with how Google has been so closed about this release.
Froyo being leaked would be a god send, but I won't be holding my breath, simply to be suffocated at the end.
Why do you guys think flash requires 2.2? It comes incorporated into 2.2 but if you have 2.1 you will be able to install the apk and be good. Adobe said flash is coming to android 2.0 and above.

I credit this to the lack of good stickies in this forum. Ok maybe I should change the word "good" to "useful" stickies. But there really should be a good Q&A sticky to answer everybody's question so that they don't ask it again in a new thread. For example: how many posts have you seen recently that ask "how do I root my phone?".. not many (unless its people panicing because they think they've bricked their phone) and thats because of that sticky at the top. I'm sure Paul will put together a guide (someday) and it will be at the top in no time.
Mod edit: I will pass your suggestion to the responsible forum mods.

What would it cost . . . for 1 click Root.

Just curious. How much it would take to intice a dev to put in the long hours it would take to root 3.2 with a 1 click root product. I'm thinking, those of us who are interested could pitch into a pot and make a collection to go to the first dev who brings us an easy root?
Maybe I'm crazy, but it looks like we are going to have to come up with an incentive to get a rooted 3.2 without having to jump through a downgrade/upgrade hoop.

Best to wait for ICS as it'll be here shortly, then pass the plate around
I too agree ice is to close around the corner to ask anyone to put more time in development for honeycomb. My tablet will stay as is. On a stock rooted 3.2.
The developers all have lives .and will get back motivated when they get something new to play with.

One NEVER knows with Acer, but if they don't, it'll be the last Acer I ever buy.
ICS will be out inside of a month, and the A500 hasn't been out a year yet. If Acer stops support inside of a year, I'll bet others will feel much the same way.
Acer has apparently told Telstra Australia that they are updating A501's to (Android 4) ICS in December. I heard this from a Telstra representative at a store. So its good news I guess.

I think I'll dump Acer anyway... I had a terrible experience with support, switched three A501 and everyone of them has bad pixels. I'll wait for Transformer 2 or Slider and then will see...
Don't they have to? I believe a manufacturer has to support a device with upgrades for 18 months as part of their agreement with Google to have Google apps on their devices

+1 That's why you start with a pre-rooted stock ROM, and cook your own.
Then it's completely setup the way you intend for your own personal use!

As others said, it would be better to wait for ICS. It's not just rooting a stock 3.2 that's the issue, with the new bootloader, you still wouldn't be able to install CWM or custom kernels. So to completely open it up, you'd have to downgrade the bootloader. And there's already a process for doing that.
If your updated to 3.2, just downgrade it to 3.01, root it, add cwm, then install a pre-rooted (near) stock 3.2 ROM.
i havent had a problem yet with a cooked rom or my recooked rom.
Then again i am all about device experimentation so....

I downgraded, rooted, installed CWM *AND* installed Lightspeed in about ten minutes. All of which was done without the aid of a PC - downloaded the downgrade, unzipped with Estrongs, followed the instructions.
If that's too hard maybe you shouldn't be rooting in the first place, because I'll put money on you coming back having broken something.

Icecream Sandwich already???

I got handed a brand new a500 by the boss to setup for testing and documenting print apps.
I turned it on it asked for the wifi. I set that up it immediately asked for an up date 70 odd megs. That downloaded and installed.
After the restart it asked for another update....
370 megs or so.
V4.0.x.x Icecream Sandwich woo hoo.
I'm going in early to work to play. Unfortunately I was not allowed to bring it home.
I'll install it tomorrow I left it downloading.
I'll try to get some screen shots etc.
hmm.... its so hard to believe.
cos acer has never been a leader when it comes to updates. never.
always the last.
Well I was surprised as any.
I'll know more for sure tomorrow.
I unfortunately didn't have time to complete the install.
But it wanted to download something large version 4.0.x.x
It was at about 20% when I left work.
My wife and kids were waiting to pick me up.
You are not the first to report about that v4.0 update, but it is not 4.0 you will be getting...

When do we get ICS update for acer a500?

I'm waiting for ICS update from acer. Could somebody tell me the time when it starts updating to ICS? If there's an unofficial way to make it happen, please inform me about it. Thank you.

Probably 6 months. It will be on the newly released tablets first. Then, sometime later, it will be officially pushed to current owners.
But then again, nobody really knows except the manufacturers.
Experimental Roms, will be out before then. But NOBODY is going to personally contact you. You'll have to check the dev threads on your own
As of right now Acer has not made any announcements regarding ICS to the A500 tablets. But like it was previously said, doesn't mean we wont hear about it in a few months.
AHHHH its all over the net.. acer has said mid January. But that does mean for sure we will get it then.. they always seem to be a bit behind..AS far as the dev of rom in this forum..
I hope i am wrong but seems they are stuck with driver issue for GPS CAMERA AND CAMCORDER.. AS well as a few other things.. I think these are proprietary to the acer tablet. this could make us have to wait for acer to release a rom or drivers specific for this tablet .
so as said about . NOBODY REALLY HAS ANY IDEA. Blazing and his team are working very hard i would say send him some pay pal help..As we all have done.. .
READ THE forum before asking a question so common as this one. its been answered a Billion times in the last few months..
dont take this personal But SEARCH FUNCTION HAS BEEN CREATED TO AVOID THREADS AS THIS ONE..
GOOD LUCK..

Yes, Yes, Yes, and Yes. It will even cook your Bacon and eggs Probably access your bank accounts as well (not that there's anything in it mind you).
Seriously, considering NOBODY has an official ICS Update via OTA, there is no possible way to tell you exactly what will happen.
I would say, 65% of all OTA Update users will have no issues, and not lose any data.
The other 35% will bork their tabs for whatever reason, and eventually lose all data, because...... they don't do backups.

Update didn't cook me any damn breakfast :-(
However it went smooth up gives you all of acres new Widgets but no Acer lock nor Acer ring bastards..
I needed to go to stock cuz I'm sending unit in for repair so just downloaded vaches 3.1 no ota update.zip unrooted and updated all the way to ics I was surprised it was released earlier than 27th normally it would have been delayed lol not early. Anyways its definitely a nice update for all you stock users.

Im not sure if it was supose to but my upgrade did NOT wipe any thing. Just added a few apps.
Im so over ICS. . I WANT JELLY BEAN . And i want it now..
my question about this coming update. Will it be Jelly bean or will that come in the weeks to come. My a 500 would look awesome with Jelly Bean and might come in handy if i need a snack.
For breakfast i want Sausage eggs and Toast no rolls... Lets get to it im hungry.
