Questions about Froyo... - Nexus One General

So I have rooted my N1 and have cyanogen, when froyo comes out and I decide i want to try it out, do i have to upload the original rom and then upgrade? or what is the best way to do it? so i can go back to cyanogen if i decide i like it better? trying to keep it as simple as possible...Thanks!!!

You don't have to do anything. It will come out as an OTA, Cyanogen will get his hands on it immediately if not a few days before the release and it will be incorporated into his ROM. You will likely have an updated version from him based on Froyo including all his extra goodies before the stock OTA is even 100% rolled out [they usually do it over a couple days].

FroYo will be released in June.
Google I/O is next Wednesday.
http://code.google.com/events/io/2010/
2.2 will be leaked next Wednesday.
We will get it.
And laugh at people who haven't rooted.
P.S. Is it just me or does this question come up a lot? And probably will increase over the next few days/weeks...

From Adobe. Check this out:
http://blogs.adobe.com/conversations/2010/04/moving_forward.html
We look forward to delivering Flash Player 10.1 for Android smartphones as a public preview at Google I/O in May, and then a general release in June. From that point on, an ever increasing number and variety of powerful, Flash-enabled devices will be arriving which we hope will provide a great landscape of choice.

Flash requires 2.2, so a "general release" in June would mean that 2.2 would arrive sometime before then or concurrently.
Either way, we (rooters) will get both much, much earlier.

Thanks paul. I hope theres a ton of youtube videos that come from that convention.
I hope froyo has this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ae01yz5z99E
Also if you get bored, watch that video over again with closed captoning, very funny =)

I doubt google is bundling Flash with the AOSP code. That would mean adobe is making flash open source(not happening) or google is locking up android(not happening). With all the talk about decoupling the android OS, the chances of something like a video player being bundled to the main OS update happening are very very very minute.

Flash will be a separate .apk, but the OS will need the frameworks to support it.

It irritates me because he states it as a blatant fact, where it should be said as something less direct. It is a possibility.. but it isn't exactly set in stone to happen - especially with how Google has been so closed about this release.
Froyo being leaked would be a god send, but I won't be holding my breath, simply to be suffocated at the end.

Why do you guys think flash requires 2.2? It comes incorporated into 2.2 but if you have 2.1 you will be able to install the apk and be good. Adobe said flash is coming to android 2.0 and above.

It requires 2.2. For a laugh I tried the flashplayer apk on my stock 2.1 installation and the package failed.

so will my rooted nexus still get the 2.2 froyo when it comes out? or do I have to relock it.

so you have the froyo leak and the flash apk, and you are confirming that flash will not work on 2.1? if this is the case the people in the ppcgeek forum waiting for the evo and the incredible forum are going to be highly upset until their phone is rooted.

(That's what they get for buying SenseUI!)

its going to suck having to load everything back on to my phone, since this isn't a cyanogen update we will have to wipe everything. then its going to suck when cyanogen comes out with his rom a week or 2 later then we will have to wipe everything again to load cyanogen rom

I credit this to the lack of good stickies in this forum. Ok maybe I should change the word "good" to "useful" stickies. But there really should be a good Q&A sticky to answer everybody's question so that they don't ask it again in a new thread. For example: how many posts have you seen recently that ask "how do I root my phone?".. not many (unless its people panicing because they think they've bricked their phone) and thats because of that sticky at the top. I'm sure Paul will put together a guide (someday) and it will be at the top in no time.
Mod edit: I will pass your suggestion to the responsible forum mods.

So i got one with root and one thats rooted and I gotta say this yes all these posts whining need to stop. But I do want to say why not? There aren't any roms as fast as this right now and everytime that there is a good one it gets ****ed up or forgotten before its done. The only thing that has any hope is the froyo thing right now because all the devs are working on it together.
I hate to admit it but I agree one hundred percent with dark shnieder. A million times we all said dont install the new signed 2.1 releAse and this shows that ignorance is the downfall for those who do not listen. Do yourselfs a favor all u ppl who installed stock 2.1... when the community tells you not to do something don't ****ing do it. Now deal with your ignorance until 2.1 is rooted.
I don't care one way or the other, I've had working 2.1 for months and I am very happy with it. If you were dumb enough to flash a ROM without researching it first, you get what you deserve. I've been running damages ROM's since they came out and have had little to no issues. I am currently running 2.08.1 and have no problems at all. So, if they come out with another update to DC or not, I'm am very happy with the ROM I have.
Hell, Ive been running ports of Android versions since Donut started to get ported (it wasnt a daily for me since I couldnt get SMS working) then played around with early 2.1 builds. I can say I was one of the few that actually saw all these 2.1 ROMs evolve from pretty basic stuff, kinda like what Froyo is right now.
I learned my lesson back with the PSP: "do not update to the latest and greatest if you know the community will come up with better stuff in days if not hours of that release".
Not everyone flashed the 2.1 RUU. I took my phone in for service and it was deemed hardware failure. They gave me a brand new phone and installed 2.1 on it without asking me if I wanted it. I asked for another phone with 1.5 and they said no LOL. So I am stuck with 2.1 stock until someone figures out how to root it. And I can't wait, because some of the ROMs I have been reading about sound real nice.

I would wait on the root and keep it private until froyo gets released, the rooting process you guys do come up with might get heard by the wrong person and they could patch it in froyo. this is a common practice when it comes to hacking devices that i have seen, once exploits are found generally the dev waits for the next update that way it can be rooted as well. Just my opinion...

Usually, root is device specific (I think). If Google releases Froyo after our "2.1 root", it most likely wont be patched since the Hero is not on the list to get that upgrade.

At the look of this I suspect that getting 2.2 sent OTA for the Vibrant shouldn't be too far behind.
This is awesome, I heard the vibrant is supposed to get froyo early august. I am impressed with samsung, they are ready stepping up.

I don't see why rooting should stop you from getting the update.
If you have done more than just rooting, then I'm assuming you might have trouble getting the OTA update. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can chime in.
EDIT: By "more than just rooting", I mean if you have installed a custom bootloader or a custom rom.
Cool beans!

Yeah, but if you install it, you will lose root. There will be a modified rom that's rooted VERY shortly after it is released though (Probably before many get the OTA update).
Wow, that was quick! Glad to see Samsung is following through with their promise and fast.
Hopefully the Vibrant will get a release in early August.
if this also includes a GPS fix, i'll be picking up a vibrant within the next week or two... after i pay AT&T my last payment on that contract. whoo!!

Gingerbread 2.3

Figured id start a thread about it and people can chime in on what they know and what they want to know. Id like for someone to provide a link to what the up coming features are going to be and when its going to be released. I heard that its going to come out on monday the 6th and some of the features might include some more lime green and a market with music that can be purchased and also some sort of supported video chat. Any truth to this would be cool but I can't confirm anything. I know verizon usually comes out with some kind of sheet to tell users what will be included and I haven't found it yet so if anyone has information that'd be nice to share with the people here on xda.

I highly doubt it will be out tomorrow. And even if it is out tomorrow, it will be on the Nexus one. You should know by now all the updates come out to the Nexus phones first. Obviously it might not be too long after that for us to get it but we've gotta wait for Google's star child first.

yeah plus MOTO will want to make some crappy build with "ninja blur" which will take forever since they only care about the droid x so we'll have to wait a while unless you're rooted. Ports of stock 2.3 should probably be out sometime in the few weeks after it is released for el nexus uno
Not sure about sources and such but:
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1930297/tablet-designer-claims-android-23-release
They announced its release this morning along with the Nexus S

So I'm going to make a guess that getting Gingerbread onto the Droid2 is going to require a new kernel? In and of itself, Gingerbread uses a newer kernel than Froyo, and it seems like there are some significant improvements under the hood that may require kernel support. I suppose this could be verified by comparing the source code between the two releases.
So, barring someone hacking eFuse, I would guess that we aren't going to see Froyo until Motorola decides to release it. Hopefully I'm wrong here...

I really don't think it'll take too long for Gingerbread to come out. We've been running 2.2 for a while now. Other phones don't even have Froyo yet. I know they probably have to make it Blur compatible, but I really don't think it'll take too long to get.

Problem is that the new update adds support to things not changable withouth unlocking the bootloader so we are kind of screwed unless something has changed. Or Motorola actually does something worth while.

I think you've completely misunderstood what AOSP and OTA are. AOSP is basically the source code which ROM cookers (Paul O' Brien, Cyanogen etc) use to build their own ROMs. OTA is an update from, in our case Google, which updates a stock ROM to Gingerbread. Also the person who said this is in charge of the Android AOSP project so he's hardly some random person

No, too many people don't understand what they're reading. Building GB in AOSP is the first step. That has to happen before any kind of OTA is even built, much less tested and pushed out to devices. So doing your checkin is rather pointless, because they're at step 2 or 3, and you're at about 8 or 9. And the Tweet is from an official, confirmed Google staffer.
So again, too many don't understand what they read and want to sound like they're somebody.
My bad, i do know what im doing, i just didnt read the original post properly.

Becase that's the route they've chosen to go this time. Do they have to? No. They didn't with Froyo. But with GB they're doing AOSP first.
My guess is they've got a GB device already, and don't need early OTA releases to build hype.

Yes and no, lol. Google will push an OTA out to N1 devices at some point. We all know that. It could start today, it could start next week. No one really knows.
Now that the source is in AOSP, ROM developers here (and elsewhere, I suppose) will begin using the source to compile custom ROMs. You may start to see those before an OTA, you may see an OTA first.
As for what works? LOL, hopefully they all do, and hopefully they'll be bug-minimalized. (Is there such a thing as bug-free??)

Question about this:
Do you not need at least a leaked ROM to extract the necessary "proprietary files" before building? Sorry if this is a noob question. Just curious.
It means they not going to waste their time with the nexus one and let us build our own rom. That mean OTA for nexus user, no time soon. We'll see a custom rom first before we see a OTA. Nexus S is their baby now not Nexus one.
Imho even a vanilla AOSP rom would be great waiting for official OTA...

new radio! thanks for sharing this.
I knew that all the people who were saying that it was offical that we were not getting the update were wrong. HTC never sent out any official notification sayignt that they were not updating the phone it was just some tech support guy's email who was obvioulsy clueless.
Finally. Oh boy here we go.
bring on the source code

Minutes after launch? My replacement phone gets here today unrooted so I might see if I can capture. If its not gb already.
Even if no source yet, we should get a newer radio, and a more optimized kernel!
Sent from my Synergy Rom using XDA App

Is there a thread on here that details how to go back to stock? I'll do it too if someone can direct me.
nvm, found it. Search is a good thing
I think I'm going to hold off until the developers get a chance with it. I'd hate to update to it and loss root temporarily.

I agree with gio. Don't forget that you could possibly lose root!
Technically even a rooted stock sense phone should receive the update as the updater isn't turned off/removed. At least thats the way the Eris worked. Unless unrevoked somehow turns off the updater when it roots the phone which I'm not aware of.

Alot of the Dinc ROM developers did turn off the updater back when the Froyo OTA was announced due to annoying, constant pop-ups. At least I know that rmk40 did with Virtuous.
This just added over at Android Central:
"Just got word about how the over-the-air rollout's going to take place. The push is scheduled to start Tuesday, Aug. 16, with an initial 10,000 updates. Another 50,000 will get it on Wednesday, and everybody else on Friday."

If you made a backup of your phone right after you rooted and before you installed a custom ROM like I did then what I'm saying is if you restore this first backup then you should get the update.
