So long story short, bought a NEW EPIC 4G from someone after being on the phone with SPRINT and verifying the ESN was "CLEAN & CLEAR" for activation. 5 minutes later I call Sprint back to swap the phone onto my account and was told "The phone is currently active on an account". Ok WTF is up with that? Anyone had a similar experience? I have tried to search for ways to get in and change the MSID and phone number but I have had no luck. The MSID & Phone Number show up as 000-000-0508 if that isnt weird enough.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Any way to get in and change the MSID to mine? Any way to repair this ESN?
Thanks for any and all help, this isn't a stolen phone, fresh out the box, as told it was good and now being told it was bad. I wish Sprint would hold themselves accountable for their screw ups.
Mike
The signs that tell me it has never been active as far as my knowledge is:
Phone number:
000-000-0508
MSID:
000-000-0508
Username:
<Not set>
Im 100% sure if it has been used before that this info would be filled in no matter how many times you reset it.
There isn't anything that can be done about the ESN.
Try contacting whoever you purchased it from to make sure they put a different phone on the line, it won't be usable until it is removed from whatever line it was attached.
I understand all of that, my phone is a Sprint rep told me the phone was good, few minutes later it was no longer good. The phone number, msid, username do not make any sense at all. It was brand new out of the box, never been activated before.

It had to have been activated at some point for the ESN to be attached to a line.
Thats the point, either sprint screwed up somewhere but I have no clue. Do you have information on changing the MSID? This is not my first rodeo at buying or even rooting phones (not that I have even attempted to root this thing) but I have never had an issue with what I was told from sprint and now I feel I can no longer trust what sprint even says.

The phone would reflect the last used phone number as well as last username.
The phone keeps trying to complete hands free activation as well.
I don't have an explanation as to how it became activated on a line, I can only say that until it is removed from that line it will not be usable with Sprint. All I can recommend is that you contact whoever you bought it from and try to sort this mess out.
The phone has never been activated. Sprint zone says "This Device is not currently active on a Sprint Account"
I can help you out tomorrow when I go to work. PM me and I'll give you my number at the store.
Not trying to be an ass at all, hopefully you understand how frustrating this is. I went in and manually changed the MSID & Phone number but not that it will matter much. Cant figure out how to change username though.

qpst will work to change the msid username and whatever else you want to change. I do advise you understand the program fully cause you can cause some real damage if programmed incorrectly. I would wait for whodaman to be honest probably your best bet.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks to me as if someone (previous owner) was attempting to modify the ESN/MEID on your epic (possibly cloning another phone, for good or bad, last you'll hear from me on the topic). Should be repairable but not discussable here. Whosdaman should be able to help you out though.
If you just bought it why not return it?

I think the OP bought it from a person rather than a store.
to the OP: Make sure the MEID under the battery matches what's on the box AND go to menu > settings > about phne and make sure THAT MEID matches the other 2 if it doesn't, then it's likely it was tampered with or changed for some reason...
Post back after you check these numbers (if they all match, then wait for whosdaman to help u out)
let us know how it goes.

Your software version is under phone info, software-information, build number.
You need version 2.36 or less, or you can not root your phone (yet).
Just a side note.
When making questions make it as easy to solve and READ as possible.
There is no punctuation at all, you put it all in one sentence. Very hard to read.
This might also be a reason why you didnt have more answers.
Just come back edit your message and put some .,:;'" in there and a couple of RETURN's wouldnt be bad either.
Thanks you and goodluck with your problem.

thank you KaseDesire for the info i have 2.37 so i have to wait then
It might be not the answer what u are looking for, but put the phone in your pocket with the battery cover facing your leg. No more declined calls. Horizontal slide answer/decline would be much better. A leather case does the trick as well.

My friend, who came from an iPhone (an iPhone 3G in fact) to the Epic (which I convinced him to) is irked that the Epic does not show the phone number of a missed call or the text message received in the lockscreen. He basically has to unlock the phone in order to see it. That was one feature he liked about the iPhone was the ability to see what number called him from the lockscreen if he missed a call without having to unlock the phone.
I'll be working on his phone this weekend and putting on SRF 1.2 to help improve his battery life, change the locksreen to unlock by swiping sideways, and overall improve his experience on the phone. He is not very technical but at this point he was getting frustrated with the phone and was thinking about selling it, but was willing to give it one more chance by having me tweak his phone for him to improve battery life, reduce the number of FCs, and overall salvage the reputation of the phone.

Wow, that is just SOOOOOO inconvenient. God damn iPhone users are the whiniest ****ing babies on the planet.
Unfortunately, the iPhone was made for people like him, those that are not tech savvy. But he ended up on Sprint because his AT&T bill was through the roof ($400 in one month in fact for overage of minutes). He's lucky to have me as his best friend (he was my best man at my wedding and godfather to my daughter). He was so mad and frustrated with the phone yesterday he almost threw it on the ground and smashed it. I told him I would help him out (as I do with his computer problems) this weekend. He even thought you could get a jailbroken iPhone to work on Sprint!
Handcent I believe has the feature that shows a pop up of the text. As for missed calls I have no idea but if he is giving up just because of that then he doesn't deserve this.phone. tell him to go back to his crappy iPhone
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
would he settle for something like using widget locker to go from the lock screen directly to his call log or sms?
So if he has 5 new texts/missed calls he wants all of those numbers to show on the lockscreen? And if that and the other reasons are why he doesn't "like the phone" he's gonna have a bad experiance with android in general.... he should have gotten the photon.... if I was just now looking for a new phone the photon would be a huge blimp on my radar.....

Jesus, just tell him to swipe down.
I think he might be able to use this Missed Call widget on his lock screen if he also gets the Widget Locker app that was referenced earlier in this thread.

No hew doesn't have SRF 1.2 yet. He is still running stock. I will put on SRF 1.2 on his phone once we meet up. He is currently using Touchwiz. His big problem is when you get a missed call for example, it only shows you on the TW lock screen you have 1 missed called (or 2 or 3 or whatever) and that's all it tells you. On an iPhone, he states, it would tell you on the lockscreen that you have a missed call and the contact (or number if the number is not in your contact list on your phone).
Thus on our Epic, he would have to swype down to unlock the phone, which then goes into your phone dialer app, which then you would have to choose call log to see what number you missed. Basically extra steps just to see the number (swype to unlock and go into phone dialer, then click on call log).
Me, I don't care since I have never owned an iPhone, but I guess for someone who owned an iPhone and used that function, I can see why it is a very convenient feature.
Also text messages worked the same way, if you a receive a text while you are away from the phone, and it was locked, it would show you the contact and/or number on the lockscreen as well without having to swype first to see who it was from.
I feel his pain. I missed part of rise of the planet of the apes the other day because I was trying to see who that damn missed text was from and I had to swipe up. Turns out it was my gf sending me a Michael's coupon, ****....
40% off though.
Hello guys !
15 hours ago I was walking towards my home when three unknown guys jumped on me, beaten me pretty good and then stole my phone. I don't really care about the bruises as I care about my little precious toy (though, I'm happy that I'm alive).
Because I'm such a noob I didn't protect my phone with Cerberus or any other security/tracing app. It didn't even have a lock-screen password (it's pretty useless because the phone can be wiped from recovery).
Guys, please, what do you suggest me to do ? I'd personally try to install a security app from google play store from my PC on my phone but I'm waiting for more oppinions. Have you tried it ?
The police asked for my IMEI code and they are probably trying to trace it by now, but I want to start my own investigation, see if this works.
As a last thing, Android users, PLEASE install tracing software on your phone. It doesn't matter if it costs money, or if it drains a bit of battery here and there. Also, make sure you will always have your IMEI code (mine was only on the box and it was almost worn-off).

Phone your network and report it stolen or you will be liable for any calls made.

Contact your Carrier/Samsung as far as i can remember they have the option to "blacklist" your imei so the thief won't be able to use or resell it without changing the imei but i doubt that the guy has that kind of technical knowledge
All you can do is get the phone imei blocked by network operator. It's too late now to protect anything in the phone or wipe it remotely
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
I reported it stolen to the police and they asked me for the IMEI code so they can obtain a warrant and start to trace my phone. I wouldn't want to add it to that blacklist yet because I don't want the phone to become unusable (missing IMEI) while the police might be trying to get it. That's the only reason that kept me from calling Samsung last night.
Also, I called my carrier, canceled my SIM card and they are probably working with the police (if they got that warrant).
One interesting thing that the officer told me was that if the IMEI code is correct, whenever the thief gets a SIM card in that phone and calls someone, the numbers will pop up at their center and they can start tracking it.
You can track it by logging in to www.samsungdive.com if you set up a Samsung account
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
wow people are just soo low in todays world.. so few dont work for things they want like the rest of us
There is no need for 3rd-party software for that.
All the S II and S III (and maybe others) devices with a free service from Samsung called Samsung Dive.
Did you by chance take the time to setup Samsung Dive?
If you did, log on to www.samsungdive.com and it will locate your phone, give you log for the last calls, remote wipe, etc.
If you didn't, then too bad: serves you well for not taking the proper measures, even if Samsung tried to help you by giving you free software and service.
I'm not really a fan of Samsung's software. My phone didn't even know how does the stock ROM look like. Unfortunately, no Samsung Dive for me.
Thank you for the replies, guys !

When you get it, either get a tracking app or return to stock and use samsung dive.
Now what the police said is true, they can get him with the IMEI number if he puts a new SIM, locate him and kick his ass.
Don't be afraid, they will handle everything from here.

It might be a hopeless case by now, but you can also try pushing androidlost from the market to the phone, via Play Store. And start praying that the thief has not wiped the ROM.
Good luck!
Well, thanks god you are safe and well right ? about the phone, without a tracing software i wouldn't have much hope. At least with the imei you would make it kind of useless as a phone for them.

You must live in a pretty ****ty part of Brazil, because I've lived there most of my life and never had a single phone stolen. And I always have high-end phones AND know how to use them for both safekeeping my private data and the devices themselves.
OTOH, in the 1 year I lived in Ft. Lauderdale (FLA/USA) as an exchange student, I was robbed about once a month, including having my padlock broken in my high school's lockerroom twice. In 37 years living in Brazil, I had a car robbed once in 1996 and that was it.
HTC just released a utility to allow you to pre-setup several personalization steps before you actually have the phone in your hands.
I can't post an external link (sorry, longtime lurker), but let me spell it out as https :// start . htcsense . com
I was able to select my desired configuration (HTC One Sprint) after selecting my language. Oddly I didn't see AT&T listed, but there was an unbranded HTC One selection that may be usable.
As I recall, you setup bookmarks, email, a few accounts, homescreen, lockscreen, and sounds/ringtones.
You do get a preview of everything you are about to set as well, so if someone is on the fence and just wants to play with the interface this is a way to do so. The entire customization set is stored with an HTC Sense account which you setup at the end or use your Facebook login to save.
I'm gonna try, seems cool

It's to do with being carrier branded and lock to them. Basically phones sold directly from carrier and not third party.

Just choose the standard One version, i just went through it and picked Orange one and it looked like it was exactly the same as the "open" version, it may be a poll type thing attached to the site so they can monitor which versions people are picking?
Never used this set up when it became available for the One X, can't see me using it for the One either, each to their own though.
It doesn't actually do anything to your phone unless you decide to log in to it when the phone first starts up, and i'm sure you will be able to set your phone up easier when it is in your hand and can do exactly what you want with it and not have to pick from the limited options that HTC give you.
