I have had the Galaxy Note for a month now and I have had 4 times randomly where it seems to have shut down. When I press the power button nothing happens, I have to take out the battery for it to get it started. I suspect maybe an app is the cause, are there any diagnostics programs for android phones that can log so you can see what causes the crash?

Latest stock ROM, 2.3.6 XXKL7 kernel 2.6.35.7, since ICS is on it's way I thought to wait with using a Custom Rom.
Are you rooted? Custom Kernel maybe?
Also, no need to pull the battery, simply long press the power button for about 10 seconds and the phone will restart.

Haven't changed anything yet, so no Root. I tried the 10seconds every time it happend but it doesn't work seems like it has crashed and only removing the battery will do the trick.
I had rather similar problem with my G. Note after about 1 month.
Problem seem to come from Android System failure and cannot read
the Ext SD card after some of the apps had been transferred to the
Ext SD. I am not quite sure why it behaved like that.
The phone just hanged and will not respond. I could power down by
pressing the power button. Then I would press power button for more
than 10 sec it will boot but after a short while will still hang. I would
then remove the Ext SD and try to re-boot and this time it will work
but those programs transferred to the Ext SD are no longer available.
Problem appeared to be due to the inability of Android reading the the
program(s) in the Ext SD. Uninstalling the programs seem to work.
The data in the Ext SD did not interfere with the working of the phone.
Deleting the program files in the hidden .android folder seem to do the
trick.
Can any of the Gurus or expect please advice on this and why it is behaving
like this? Is there a a diagnostic program that can assist in identifying the
problem? Will appreciate any assistance. Thank you.
Today my phone has shut down twice and I missed some important calls. I adore this phone but I have to ckeck constantly whether it is on or off. It is not really off, when I charge it I hear the connection sound. So it must be on but in a state of coma. OP can you see if we have the same problem? I am on stock and rooted, but I've been having this issue prior rooting. Pressing the power button for 15 or so seconds restarts the phone. Surely it is an app, but which one?

I have a similar problem.
Running RocketROM R17 + CFRoot Kernel.
Some days it is fine, other days it can just hang twice a day, and I only notice it when I try to wake the GNote up.
Have no idea how to even start debugging it.
am using note since 2 months and i haven't faced such problem. and am suspecting this issue may be with some of the app or apps not responding properly. take all backup and try resetting your G note.
Exactly the same thing happened to me like the OP, twice since I bought my phone. I am running stock & no SD card.

Hey
I'm running DK 4.4, and my phone just appears to be randomly freezing while it's in my pocket.
I should note this has been happening with other roms as well, so I seriously doubt it's a rom issue.
I'm not overclocked (anymore).
The screen just won't turn on.
People can even call me and to them it seems like it's ringing, but it's not and nothing happens.
The only way to recover from that seems to be to take the battery out and put it back in.
I finally managed to catch it in action and have a look at the log, but I couldn't find anything useful.
Maybe someone else can
logcat:
http://pastebin.com/kS3EnPQa
Also, I should mention the freeze happened a couple of minutes before the end of this logcat, the log keeps updating even though the phone appears frozen.
adb shell doesn't seem to work, though, and neither does adb reboot
Thanks
Hi. Flash an old 2.1 stock RUU original rom, root again and check if the phone works. Sounds like a Software or Hardware issue. Otherwise you can try to wipe phone and test the DK ROM again.
Do you use cache to ext? Download and install free app ap2sd GUI from Market and move cache back to internal. Maybe your sd card should be Checked too.
Do you use the default dk Kernel without over or downclock under 3cxphone MHz?
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using Tapatalk
Fair enough, I'll try it.
I'm curious, though, are you actually seeing something in the log?
As for the cache to ext, my dalvik cache used to be on my SD card, but I already moved it back thinking it might be the issue
EDIT: as for the kernel, I use the original DK one (iirc that's the original HTC kernel?), shouldn't be over/underclocked.
I had this same issue and was about to return my Wildfire, but then the microSD died! So I got a new one and its been fine ever since so maybe try another card if you can and if the above suggestion doesn't work.

Thanks for the suggestions!
I'll be sure to try them. Maybe my Wildfire isn't on its death bed after all
Your not the only one my GFs phone has the dame prob plz do let me know if u manage to fix it. Thx
P.s. her phone's completely stock no root no nothing.

It definitely seems like it's the SD card.
I tried using a different one and I haven't had any problems for about 48 hours.
Will update if it changes
Thanks a lot for the suggestions, guys!

Hi Moderators,
Please feel to delete or move this thread, if you find it repetitive. Apologies for starting a new thread.
Hi All,
I have a unique issue with my Nexus one. Sometimes it fails to reboot and then does not start even pressing power button multiple times. Sometimes it starts but then screen does not come up after the display time expires. Whenever it is ON, power button works good, ALWAYS. When it goes into the weird state, I am not able to put it in recovery mode as well. Whenever, I am able to put it in recovery mode, power button ALWYAS works good. Also I have seen that sometimes, even after boot-up it is not able to detect the SD card even when battery is at around 30%.
I have tried all the methods I could find related to "Nexus One power issue" here on XDA as well as via Google search. Sometimes the "remove battery multiple times while plugged into AC" works but at times it also does not help either.
I visited the local HTC service station. The guy there showed me that the small strip of Litmus paper on battery and phone has turned reddish. For normal phone it should be white. This indicates that phone was in contact with something acidic in nature. I tried swapping batteries with my friends and colleagues, but no luck. I have replaced the power button strip of my phone which seems to be trouble some as per the discussions here.
I have tried CM7.x, RCADS, MM super hybrid, eVil's desire port and of course stock 2.3.x ROMs. All seem to have similar issue one or another time. I have also tried Amon_RA's 2.2.0 and 2.2.1. Somebody told me to try with CM6.1 which I will try now if I am able to boot it in recovery.
My warranty is long gone, BTW. Also I bought my phone from US and it is not possible for me to go there again in near future. This issue cropped up approximately 3/4 weeks back. I have default radio.
Having said that, does anybody know what could be the issue with my phone? Has anyone faced such an issue?

Thanks a lot for your suggestions. I somehow manage to put my Nexus one in recovery mode by pressing power + volume down buttons multiple times. Then flashed the radio 5.08 on it. I already have CM 7.x ROM.
With this combination, my phone is working good so far. The power down issue would have reoccured by now. So it looks like my issue is resolved. I will use it for 24 more hours and come back if I am able to hit the power down issue again.
Once again thanks for the suggestions. As usual, XDA rocks. Had been experiencing this since good old Windows Mobile + HTC Touch days :-D.

I tested my Nexus one for past approx ~36 hours. In this time, I was hit by the issue mentioned in this thread twice.
Out of those 2, 1 was probably caused due to a soft reboot as I was able to get some output from cat /proc/last_kmsg but could not save it for sharing. The other one did not had last_kmsg entry so I am not sure what caused the phone to go haywire. The battery charge was ~30% when I booted it next time.
Now, I am on CM 7.x stable + 5.08 radio + Amon_Ra' 2.0.0 recovery and I explicitly have wiped the cache and Dalvik-cache via recovery. Since then, phone seems to be working OK. I will keep this thread updated if I am again able to get into the "Not able to power-on with power button" issue.
I bought S4 2 months ago. Recently, it keep restarting and restarting. The battery go down from 50% to 0% when it restart. Anyone know how to fix this issue ?
Same thing over here
My S4 acted that way also.
It happened when I took burst pictures and then touch the little photo icon in the corner to see the captured images.
The phone restarted at 0% battery and got into restart loop.
Only removing the battery for a few seconds could stop this loop.
Now, I reinstalled a new ROM.
Hope it works.
Try install new recovery+ROM
There are many ways to try to fix this issue start from the least expensive :
- disconnect wireless
- remove sd card
- remove the battery and the sim card and reinsert them
- check if your battery is swollen and replace it if so
- try a factory reset
- if you have a custom rom try stock rom
good luck

Getting the same-ish problems. Phone is rebooting like mad, doesn't matter what ROM I have installed at all. Not sure if it's an issue with my battery but it seems that it could be a voltage/current issue that causes the phone to die for just long enough. As everyone knows if you pull the battery out whilst the phone is on, then put it back in after a second or two, the phone tries to reboot without you ever having pressed the power button
I just got 2 new batteries. Gotta wait about a week for them to come. Gonna do some testing, see if it stops the issues. If not, then it's a hardware issue and I'm gonna see if I can get it replaced under warranty.
How to use logcat
My problem seems to be different compared to the others in this thread, but don't want to start a new thread. Currently my S4 is lying in the office all week, because I use another phone, when I am outside of the office. It's equiped with pre-rooted MGA, but I also tried various other ROM's, with different ways of flashing e.g. CWM, Odin etc. also no wipe/full wipe. The problem is that as soon, as I take the phone away from the office, I have several restarts a day, which is never happen in the office. This is strange!
My thoughts are, that some app is responsible.
questions:
- can I find out in using logcat? / How to use logcat?
- There is a description to boot the phone into safe mode http://skp.samsungcsportal.com/integrated/popup/FaqDetailPopup3.jsp?cdsite=my&seq=871239. It's not working for me. Has anybody tried that?
- Any other ideas?

I believe that goes in the right direction, but turning off GPS did not help. But I think it must have to do with location, sometimes it is stable the whole day (same as in the office) sometimes 2-3 reboots, one after the other.
Must be an app, but how to find?
Strange problem. My phone freezes on me every 35-40 hours of power on. I need to remove battery and restart the phone for it to work. I could be just be in the app drawer or playing a graphic intensive game the phone would just freeze.
I don't know why this would happen to an otherwise wonderful phone. Snappy fast and great battery otherwise.
I've done the official Sammy firmware upgrade OTA and the phone is stock unrooted

Try to use without ext sd card if there is any & observe.
Hey guys, I just wanted to share my experience with my SM-N9005 that's a week old today.
When I first unboxed it, it slipped in my sim card and 64GB sdcard and turned the phone on.
During the second or third screen of the wizard, the phone froze and rebooted.
After that, I went through the wizard again with no problems and finally to the homescreen.
I noticed on the status bar that the Play Store is failing to install / recover a whole host of apps and during that, I received that "Prevention Information" nonsense, the phone froze and rebooted after I tapped to see if I can find this app but all it showed me one was app, which was the Play Store services. I assume, maybe the apps failed because the services and Play Store wanted to update.
Well after all of that, there are times when the "Prevention Information" comes up, the phone won't freeze and soft restart (Just show the Samsung logo and come back to the homescreen with one or two vibrations) right away but eventually. There have been instances, where for example, I would be in the BBM for Android app or WhatsApp when this happens and return with no chat history but that happened once or twice, I think there was another instance that I lost information but that might not necesserily be an emmc issue but due to a sudden reboot or freeze without being able to save properly.
I also get a notification toast that I am running low on memory when I have plenty of memory left. (I would start seeing this around and after 10GBs have been used)
Things I have tried:
Factory Reset from the menu option.
Factory Reset from Recovery.
PC ODIN to the very first .tar ROM with corresponding CSC (XME) for my handset.
Removed the sdcard to see if it was that.
Nothing worked but the problems aren't as frequent.
I can't play games for too long because it will soft reboot. The phone does get warm quickly, which is a concern.
I think that's about it, I do love the phone but if this continues and this is a Samsung bug, I might just hold off from sending it back and buy a Nexus 5.
Samsung has been having too many issues with their handsets like faulty emmc chips, sudden bricked phones, multi-touch screen issues, etc.
This will be my last Samsung device either way but I am hoping that there's a fix because if I send it back, that's that.
I'm thinking of returning mine and sticking with the s4 to much hassle I've factory reset my device and left out my 64gb we card and see where it goes from here.

Hey guys
I updated to the OTA KitKat update, and now have a rather irritating issue that I did not have before. My phone is not rooted, and I'm not using an s-view flip case. I've tried using different lock screens, but it makes no difference.
Since the update, if I press the power button or home button to wake the screen, it sometimes takes 3 - 5 seconds to actually turn on. The strange thing is that if I turn the screen off, then back on within a minute or two, it's as fast as it should be at turning back on. But if the phone sits, untouched, for ten minutes or longer, it takes forever to turn on.
I tried wiping the cache partition, and disabled S voice wake up commands, and double tap to launch S voice.
Any ideas?
Do you have an SD card? That has been known to cause that issue.
Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk
I do have one, but it's an old crummy one. Does a bad one cause it? Or a lack of an SD card?
Thanks
Actually having one in your phone has caused that lag before. If you don't have one in your phone then not sure.

I disabled double tap home to open S voice. I don't want to completely disable S voice, because in conjunction with S for switch voice, it's a very handy tool!
Since I removed the SD card, it has been performing as it should. Must have been the SD card all along. I feel a bit guilty starting a thread about this, when there is already information out there about SD cards causing lag, but but my problem didn't start until immediately after upgrading from JB to KK, and I've had this phone since launch day. Made me think it was a different issue. One again the awesome community at xda helped me out, and quickly!

I'm not complaining because I had a really old, crappy 8gb SD card, and I stored nothing on it. Didn't even need it. I assume an updated sd card wouldn't have this problem, but that's just an assumption on my part.
