CM9 ICS battery life saving's tips with Advanced CMSettings.apk - Galaxy S II General

Hello to everyone.
I know that there are some similar threads in this forum, but no one is strictly related to the CM9 alpha IML74K.
I know as well that this could be part of the CM9 user discussion thread, but I'd like to share the best settings to get a good battery life with our S2 in a clean thread.
So, please:
no trolls, no dumb questions.
Just share your own experience (with a battery screenshot should be better).
Thanks a lot.
Here we go:
Developer options:
Debug usb off
Allow mock locations off
Force GPU rendering off
Windows animation scale off
Transition animation scale off
Don't keep activities on
Background process limit on
Kill app back button on
Display:
Automatic brightness off (I'm using Brightness Level widget)
Black wallpaper (search for solid black.png from wikipedia)
Sleep after 1 minute of inactivity.
Pulse notification light off.
Trebuchet options:
Scroll wallpaper off
Sync settings:
Google account
Sync calendar on
Sync Contacts on
Sync Gmail on
Whattsapp account:
Sync Contacts on
Sound Settings:
Touch sounds off
Screen lock sounds off
Vibrate on touch off
Location services:
Google's location service on
Location & Google search on
(Gps satellites on only when using Sygic or Maps)
Date and time:
Automatic date & time off
Automatic time zone off
CyanogenMod Settings app v1.0:
Interface Settings/Expanded view widget
Toggle 2G/3G checked
Toggle Mobile data checked
For a quick switch to 2G mode and save more battery.
Testing "twek levels and filtering" in automatic backlight settings.
With Titanium Backup:
Frozen all live wallpapers, tts services and uninstalled Gtalk and mail.
P.S. Be careful, you need debug usb on when using Titanium Backup
Data on all the day. I turn it off when I go to bed.
Wireless on when I'm home and need to use dropbox or download a big file from my Gmail account.
I'm using CM9 01062012 (I know, there's a new one, but I've reached a very stable daily rom, no FC, no random reboots, fast and smooth).
Modem XXKL1
Now my battery lasts two days.
Well, when my girlfriend tells me stories about her life, it lasts one day and a half.
Important:
I've uninstalled Facebook app which was causing a battery drain. I'm using the mobile web page instead and I've to tell that it is faster.
Other apps installed:
Twitter, Maps, Sygic, Whattsapp, Beatiful widgets (with manual weather update), Xda premium, ...
2012-01-14 Added CyanogenMod Settings Apk v1.0 (from SGS forums)
How to install:
Download it to your internal SD card
Enter into Recovery mode;
Wipe cache;
Advanced settings, wipe dalvik cache;
Flash zip from Sdcard,
Choose CMSettings.zip and flash it.
Reboot system
2011-01-18 Update:
I've been trying few modems and I've found the best one for me: (Vodafone Spain, data on almost all the time, good signal quality, great battery life)
NEKD5 Modem Zip package.
Flash from recovery. Follow cmsettings instructions.

Nice post. Going to try some your suggestions.
I'm sure loads of other xdaers are going find this useful too.
So many posts in the cm9 discussion thread about battery life and how to achieve optimum performance good to have a thread about it.
Big props

I also agree on removing the Facebook app ATM its killing of battery life.
We have similar settings besides using Facebook let me see if things improve tmr

Apparently its a bug. It makes the OS look like its working over time but actually it won't be. Its somewhere in the cm discussion thread if you want to see the posts about it. As far as aware its not fixed yet with any of the builds.

The same here. But I've noticed that using Fastreboot app, it seems to kill/restart stuck apps/processes.
Anyway, rebooting the system before the night helps a lot.
Unless you're not a modern vampire...

Agree with others - excellent thread. There seem to be so many battery challenges with CM9 that a separate thread will lessen clutter in the discussion thread.
I've tried a number of your settings and have also flashed the KL1 modem. I had high hopes for KP4 at first, but it seems to have slipped back into old habits!

Has anyone looked into the FB-app? Why its causing battery problems?

The app and the process are still running after you close them.
I have tried to logout, but it's still there. I think the process keeps going for notifications and photo uploading.
I've tried to kill it, but it comes back after few seconds.
Finally I gave up and used the mobile web page.

But that isn't related to CM9, i had the same issues on gingerbread.

Yes, sir.
I knew it.
But it seems to me that Facebook app is eating more battery on ICS.
Checked my battery info and found out FB app percentage was 15% in 6 hours and I've used it just to read few messages. Then I've logged out.
I could be wrong, but I think it needs an update to control battery drain.

Indeed. I'll bet there are a host of apps that will need subtle tweaks and optimisations for ICS. Another reason not to expect too much from CM9 in terms of performance as yet...although access to kernal sources is obviously the big one!

CM settings
Trying right now CyanogenMod Settings app.
Flashable zip from recovery. The apk goes to /system.
It comes from GTi9000 forum and as I can see, it works perfectly on my S2.
It doesn't have so many options, but few are very important.
Let's have a look...

I'd be very interested on your feedback on this app.
On a different subject, I seem to have my battery back behaving reasonably well again with KP1 modem. In my tons of testing it seems like Nova Launcher - as much as I like it - is a significant contributor to my battery drain issues.
This could be because I have installed a bunch more stuff on Nova than I have with Trebuchet, so my next tactic is to gradually reintroduce some of my favourite widgets to Trebuchet to see if one of them suddenly starts killing my battery.
On the down side it may mean that I can't use one of my widgets for a while but on the plus side it may eliminate Nova as a battery drain meaning that I can go back to using it.

Have you tried FBM for facebook?
Basically the same look as the facebook app. But supposedly a lot cleaner!

As I said before, don't expect a very useful app. It's the 1.0 version, and hopefully it will be a great app. But for now I've tried only some settings in the automatic backlight and modified the notification power widget.
At the moment, that's all we have. Anyway, give it a try, if you'd like.
Screenshots added in the first post.

Anyone able to disable button's backlight? Its still on even though i set it to "0" in the custom settings..
Another thing,is it possible to the haptic feedback tweaks like in cm7 settings?

Back from some modem testings, I'd like to say that NEKD5 has surprised me.
Never loosing data at all, best battery life and no problem with sms and sync.
Here you've got it.

Same here. I think it's because I enabled the Facebook Sync feature or I have too many media xD
Ya, kinda' laggy.
The gallery is crap.

It's amazing.
Gallery is fine.
The reason it takes ages to load FOR YOU is because you are using task killers that unload it from memory.
Each time you load it up, it has to fully load again, rather than instantaneously popping up.

I have to agree here. I read the "task killers are bad" article and initially dismissed it as "no way" but since getting my Play I have not cleared all my tasks and it definitely runs perfectly fine and seemingly faster than my other Android devices that I religiously killed tasks on.
That said I still run ATK for when I actually have to kill a task, ex:a program is stuck and won't even FC, or my email acts up occasionally and won't retrieve. I find killing the email app and then opening it again cures it.

I use this aswell. Only complaint is that it says QuickPic at the top. Annoys me xD and the camera icon needs to be bigger.
I've found if I don't force close Gallery, its process will become a huge battery drain and my Play won't last a full day. That said, I do prefer it over Quick Pic, as it does run faster (for me).

Nope. Open processes do not drain the battery.
When you are not using them, the Android o/s freezes the process which eliminates processing power and battery power.
The only time an open process will drain your battery is if you are using a custom rom that doesnt support process freezing.

Problem is, when you go to battery usage when this problem occurs, Gallery does appear as taking up anywhere from 25-35% of the battery life.
Only a phone restart or force close of the app fixes the issue.
It doesn't happen too often anymore.

I have had my phone on this charge for 11h 28m and 46 seconds. My battery level is at 51%.
I have used the gallery today to show my work friends a couple of photos and a video. (about 30 seconds worth).
Gallery battery usage reports at 0.0%.
Something is wrong with your set up. The gallery works fine on my phone and doesnt drain the battery at all.
I suggest you are either using a custom rom that doesn process freeze the gallery, or you have an app killer that is killing the gallery.
I cant think of anything else it could be.
Hope you fix it anyway. GL
My phone takes a bit to load pictures too. I find that the droid in general needs a better way of shutting down unused programs. Too often do i need to restart my phone to get it working at top notch again.
i used quick pic and its fine now

My battery sucks lately. It may be since the last xloud update.
I can't get through a day just on standby. If I make a call or two it is dead before I get off work.
I use the task killer all the time and almost never use the gallery and don't use facebook. I do you Go launcher but it wasn't bad before the update.
Don't use the task killer. Install some scripts and custom Init. d scripts. Best way to conserve battery is to install juice defender ultimate
Saves battery 2x.
Lowring battery voltage also helps

Last update had a bug which drains the battery.
There is a fix thread on the forums somewhere that explains why it is bugged.
You need to go to settings, wireless and networks, mobile networks, network operators, then select manual instead of automatic.
The bug is basically that when you leave it on automatic, it will constantaly scan for radio signals whether you have a signal or not.
Took me a while to find out what it was, then someone else found a proper fix for it.
Can you tell me which forun and the thread title with those bugs?
Thanks for the Tip.

Battery drain - source found

I have had problems with battery drain on my S2 from the day I bought it. The battery would last apprx 12-14 hours before going dead - almost without use.
I then removed an Exchange (ActiveSync) mail account. And the problem was gone. 30+ hours battery with no problems. I added the mail account back, and the problem reoccured. I testet this some more times and it was consistent each time. BTW I was not using push, just manual mail update.
The mail account that I am adding forces encryption on the phone, so it might be that this is the actual source of the battery drain. But it shows that the phone is useless using ActiveSync with encryption.
I was hoping that this was fixed in 2.3.4, but the problem was the same there as well. Until this is fixed (which I don't suspect will happen) I can not use the phone with my job email account because of this.
Yes you can go to themes and apps section and search for the administration removed email app, stock app with the corporate control removed try it and see if that works better, currently using it myself and no big battery drains.

Also disable 'Auto-sync' if not required.

You can unroot upon return just use a insecure kernel which will bypass superuser I think.

I also pinned down my huge battery drain (10% per hour) to the Exchange email connection I use. I have tried various stock ROMs and some custom ones, but all seem to give the same result. I must say that older ROMs did not seem to have the drain this much. I am currently running Cognition 1.5.1.
Currently I work around the drain by manually syncing my email whenever I want to read email and this results in a whole lot less battery consumption (I now have 50-70% battery left with moderate use, instead of only barely managing 8 hours or so.
I have installed the modified Email.apk to see if this fixes some issues. The email.apk in Cognition did not have a .odex file anymore and was a few bytes different in size, so I really really hope that this fixes the drain. I'll keep you posted.

[GUIDE] Running ICS as smoothly as possible - Help needed

Hi
Since KP2 is released with Working modem and calls are working I would appreciate if DEV's possibly could give us a few Tips to run this as smoothly as possible.
KP2 although faster has still a bit of force closes so any help in reducing this will be greatly appreciated.
I'll Try to post a few things I find around the forums to get all in one place.
I9100XXKP2 DOWNLOAD
http://www.sammobile.com/2011/12/18/...r-sgs2-custom/
1. Flashing via ODIN
Code > PDA
Modem > Phone
Is all you need to flash via Odin, rest can be remained untouched
2. Trebuchet Launcher by cyanmod
Is an ICS launcher and a good replacement for TW (will try to find the download link. I found TW force closes a lot on me so this works perfect.
3. Remove the Red Click Highlight Box
Go to Apps > Dev Tools > Development settings > strictmode visual indicator > put it in OFF MODE
Nice thread mate!
Just posted these tips elsewhere:
In order to get the best possible experience with these leaked ROMs you need to:
* Install the Bezke XXKP1/2 ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1393569) - Flashable through CWM and is pre-rooted and also has the RIL fixes for 3G data
* Change the default keyboard to the standard Android one as soon as you can one to stop the keyboard FC's.
* Install the Trebuchet launcher (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=821149&d=1324230099) - and place it in /system/app folder. It should open when you press the home button. Set it as the default launcher.
* Stop the media scanner from running - it's a BIG battery drainer - go to Settings/Applications/Running and stop it there, and also stop the cached process
* Turn off key press sounds and lock screen sounds - having these on causes a continuous partial partial wave lock called 'AudioOut_1' - battery drainer
* Install these Calendar apks (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19448865&postcount=2) in /system/app to get the calendar working. Once in /system/app, click on them both to install them. The Calendar will now work
* If you want to use the Contacts.apk and Phone.apk from the 'vanilla' ICS ROM (instead of the installed TW ones) download those APK's (http://www.multiupload.com/6T0019180O) and put them in /system/app. Don't install the MMS.apk though it will break things!
* Turn off the red border from appearing on some screens by going to the Dev Tools App > Development settings > strictmode visual indicator > put it in OFF MODE - then reboot for this to take effect
Battery life then falls to normal levels. Be aware though that when you connect your phone to your computer to transfer files etc, that a media scan will be run again when you disconnect. You'll have to force stop the media scan again otherwise it will keep running.
This should be a sticky! Is there a way to get the stock ics notification bar?, samsung's bar is horrendous

Nice One @Interfreak some awesome tips there...
I guess I'll leave it in your post as you are second anyway.. will see if we get another leak before christmas which might be better than the KP2
Hi, thanks for this thread, let's hope it build up.
I am using the Sam mobile KP2 leak, flashed using mobile Odin (code and modem) and have removed tw and the hubs. I use Nova launcher and replaced gallery with quikpic .
I am using default hardware acceleration.
I use TouchPal keyboard.
So far, I have not had any issues with media scanner at all.
I get closes occasionally, but they usually start find the second attempt.
I have started playing with the 3g settings in build.prop but have not found any good tweaks yet in there.
Has anyone been able to investigate the governor yet? I can't help feel that it is using a Dev setting that is causing the closes.. .

A tip that I just thought of (and enabled):
Download the SlideIT keyboard from the Android market and then get the SlideIT ICS skin in viola - you have a very close approximation of Swype working with your ICS build.

Not worth it until ICS is faster/better than 2.3.6, which it currently is not. It's fun to play with though to see what samsung has in store for us for next year!
The room looks nice, here are some problems that I'm experiencing :
- lots of force closes on settings page
- Some random fc with android process acore
- Facebook app doesn't show Any fonts. Really weird this one
- some random crashes with phone and contacts apps (aosp)
One thing that surprised me : battery life is good overall!
Can't wait for devs to tinker with the rom.

Official ICS Firmwares - Bugs List

Hi
Use this thread to list bugs you have found in Stock Note ICS 'LPY' firmware, and work-arounds you have discovered for them.
Feel free to include bugs in Apps that don't work quite as intended in ICS but did work fine in GB.
Nigel
1) Facebook (uses ICS Sync Mechanism). Sync's ALL facebook friends and not just those already in contacts even when option to 'Sync with existing contacts' is selected. Result is a load of contacts with photo/name only where folks have not included contacts info in their FB profile. Solution is not to sync contacts with FB!! Not syncing means you don't get the contacts pics (the main reason why I want to sync). There are some 3rd party FB pic sync apps, but I have not tried any of these with ICS as yet.
2) Font size used for name of apps under icons for apps is bigger than in GB. This results in app names wrapping mid word where the same app name fitted on a single line in GB. This can result in the final 1 or more letters in the name of an app appearing on a second line under the icon. It looks ugly.
3) The 'Select Input Method' prompt appears as a notification under 'ongoing tasks' randomly.
Email widgets can fail to update, lose their assigned accounts and lose the option to switch accounts. The only fix for the first problem is to scroll rapidly down the email list to force an update, the assigned account can usually be reset on the widget, but occasionally the widgets get locked and have to be deleted and regenerated.
Also, not sure if this qualifies as a bug or change in behaviour, but the way audio output is dealt with when bluetooth audio devices disconnect has changed. Whereas in GB, switching off eg. a bluetooth headset would stop any streaming audio, with ICS the audio continues, but is switched to the Note speaker.
ICS is rather a large jump isn't it? We only have one build. You should make this specific to LPY if you want, but having it just be for ICS bugs isn't very specific or logical. It's like saying: Bugs for GB! That's A LOT of builds. If you want this thread to be useful, make it more specific.
Experiencing Random screen flickers and pixel salad. Resolves by resetting or lockscreen. Not sure if it's Kernel related like custom kernels experienced in GB roms i.e. franco kernel v9. pls help to shed light on this?
S Planner
I have found a bug in my ICS LPY S planner package. I use it with exchange and the status is not properly synced with Exchange:
Note-----------------------Exchange

Tentative------------------Busy
Busy-----------------------Out of Office
Not nice...
When the phone is connected to car dock and kept in horizontal position, if you recieve a call, the phone app force closes and you cant answer it.
Solution: Keep the phone in vertical position in the dock!!

Hi
I got this while playing with the face unlock stuff after the initial update. I did a hard reset to get shot of any left over junk, and have not re-enabled the face unlock, and have not seen the pixel-fest since. I suspect it was not using face unlock rather than the hard reset that sorted.
Nigel
Bugs I have found so far :
Phone does not connect to computer via KIES.
Many bugs using original car dock - phone app closes when dialing, calls dropped when using Bluetooth - I did not try vertical mode yet
Phone randomly stops entering deep sleep mode , BetterBatteryStats lists a kernel wakelock called : l2_hsic . This does not impact battery time by much, but still annoying
Phone randomly reboots while screen is off - but I had this in gingerbread too
In call log , when I clicked a number it used to show me all the times that number called, now it does not.
Sometimes the phone forgets the personal ring tone assigned to a contact and uses default ring tone
... that's all I can think of right now, the good side is the ROM is MUCH FASTER in touchwiz and other apps..

Its not as painful to do this with ics since it will auto reinstall apps. (Configure backup and restore in settings before reset). Its supposed to backup app configs as well, but I found this did not work (many apps have their own mechanism to backup their config)
Currently irritated to death by the random reboots while in sleep. Sometimes 18 hours apart... Sometimes 18 minutes apart.

Experiencing Random screen flickers and pixel salad. Resolves by resetting or lockscreen. Not sure if it's Kernel related like custom kernels experienced in GB roms i.e. franco kernel v9. pls help to shed light on this?

On LPY stock but rooted.
By "Pixel salad" you mean multi coloured horizontal lines filling the screen up?
I got this when I woke my phone up and was about to unlock it (pattern lock) when I received a call...
I decided to swipe answer to see if it still functioned and it did...

It appears when the keyboard is displayed so that you can change keyboard if you wish, as opposed to using long press in GB.

having frequently used apps moved to SD card may cause random reboot. nothing to do with 'screen off' but worth checking.
I have no complaint about ICS except that the battery life is abysmal and the audio hiccup all the time.
I am currently on LPY. Wondering if you guys have the same issues. The audio hiccup is the most annoying. Don't know how to describe it. It's like music skipping while playing. It happened even on zPlayer and Poweramp so it's not stock music player dependent. At first I thought that my sd card is failing but when I tried to play it on my PC, all the music files played normal without any hiccups.
In my case I cannot use skype and I keep getting this error message "you cannot be signed in at this time. Please try again later". So far I have tried clearing app data, force closing, reinstalling and installing modded and older versions of skype and no luck still. Skype is running just fine on my laptop.
I am on rooted LPY.

I use "voice talk" when driving and often launch it by double clicking the home button. However I notice that every 2nd or 3rd time i launch it, the microphone doesn't respond (the blue concentric circles indicating sound don't move). Clicking done makes it ask to try again and the microphone works normally.

ICS is rather a large jump isn't it? We only have one build. You should make this specific to LPY if you want, but having it just be for ICS bugs isn't very specific or logical. It's like saying: Bugs for GB! That's A LOT of builds. If you want this thread to be useful, make it more specific.

He did make it specific....he said "stock Note ICS 'LPY' firmware". Did you not read his original post? Before you try to sound clever, read before you post!

Use the widget and adjust brightness to very low. Now Open stock browser and set there the brightness to automatic. Go to a app like Facebook, tapatalk and open a Page where you get directed to the browser to open it. Press home button now. Go to the widget and press synchronization button on or off doesn't matter now you will see the brightness button that was black to jump from alone to auto. I guess that's the automatization process of Samsung.

Massively improved battery life on stock 4.1.2

I've had fantastic results since I updated to 4.1.2.
I've done a fair bit of tweaking to get the results, but it's worth the effort.
Here's my advice.
Factory reset first. (Vital)
Turn off Google Now
Turn off Google location updating and history in Google maps
Disable all Samsung Apps you don't use. (This will be a massive list of useless apps and services)
Use a mostly black wallpaper
That's it.
Below in the screenshots are the results of this tweaking.
Please keep in mind, I've been reading books on my phone with moon+ reader. I use a white text on black background and mainly at night so low brightness. Hence the crazy long screen on time.
However I still sent numerous txts, browsed, used gmail, streamed music etc etc...and had two days of standby.
Screen on auto brightness, standard battery.
Insane. This is by far the best battery life I've ever had from an Android device...and I've had many going back to the G1.
I'd thoroughly recommended trying the tips.
Have a search around and you'll find a full page with all the Samsung apps you can disable...there are a hell of a lot of them.
Give it a go.

link ? thanks
My experience is similar, as I've done the same. I'd say that stock 4.1.2 (LL5) is about as close to perfect as it can be.
Which 4.1.2 rom are you using? I can only get a maximum of 6 hours screen time on my stock ELKC rom
and this is also on stock kernel?
LL5 with stock kernel and a full wipe. Lots of Samsung bloat frozen and removed.
More details please:
-Rom???
-2G or 3G???
-Wifi all time???
-Power saver mode on???

I use stock ROM odexed. I have sync off most of the time and I sync manually about once an hour or maybe once every two hours, depending on my schedule. Never use power saver, and I keep data toggled off when I don't need it, and I use Wifi in my office (and data only when out) so I think that helps. I don't run any widgets other than the stock calendar widget, and gnotes (and Google search, but I have Now turned off), no live wallpapers, Facebook or any of that crap. Just a dark (stars) wallpaper. I can get huge amount of time out of my battery that way, even with a good amount of screen time. I have around 80 apps installed, but keep the system running lean. I don't use any task managers or memory killers, and I rarely reboot. Maybe once every 3-4 days.

On 4.1.1, with Perseus kernel, auto sync and mobile data on all the time, I get even better battery life. Which is why I'm reluctant to update and start over, as the phone more operates perfectly for me.
There is a list of safe to remove apps in the Themes & Apps sections, it's a sticky thread even.

Just wanted to add that on ELL4 I'm suddenly getting fantastic battery life - I was having loads of random reboot problems (many times an hour at one point, unusable), then it all went away for some reason after lots of fiddling, and since then I'm on 27 hours without a charge, and still 35% left - that's with everything turned on still, no change in my usage; wifi all the time, Google Now, loads of accounts syncing including Latitude location, email syncing every 15 mins, some music and browsing usage, etc
Before, I'd get around 16 hours of this normal usage before the battery was getting ready for a charge. Weird, but I'm not complaining!
Well with ELL4 everythink stock rooted with enyxos abuse, and frozen samsung apps, i can barely get 6 hours screen on ..
I text friends, and use whatsapp over Data network(2g) (no wifi) and SYNC is off
Will i get 9h screen on with ELL5 ?
Edit : And yes i wiped cache / data before flash ELL4 via Odin
I still hold the record XD
