Same here. I think it's because I enabled the Facebook Sync feature or I have too many media xD
Ya, kinda' laggy.
The gallery is crap.
Use this:

It's amazing.
Gallery is fine.
The reason it takes ages to load FOR YOU is because you are using task killers that unload it from memory.
Each time you load it up, it has to fully load again, rather than instantaneously popping up.

I have to agree here. I read the "task killers are bad" article and initially dismissed it as "no way" but since getting my Play I have not cleared all my tasks and it definitely runs perfectly fine and seemingly faster than my other Android devices that I religiously killed tasks on.
That said I still run ATK for when I actually have to kill a task, ex:a program is stuck and won't even FC, or my email acts up occasionally and won't retrieve. I find killing the email app and then opening it again cures it.

I use this aswell. Only complaint is that it says QuickPic at the top. Annoys me xD and the camera icon needs to be bigger.
I've found if I don't force close Gallery, its process will become a huge battery drain and my Play won't last a full day. That said, I do prefer it over Quick Pic, as it does run faster (for me).

Nope. Open processes do not drain the battery.
When you are not using them, the Android o/s freezes the process which eliminates processing power and battery power.
The only time an open process will drain your battery is if you are using a custom rom that doesnt support process freezing.

Problem is, when you go to battery usage when this problem occurs, Gallery does appear as taking up anywhere from 25-35% of the battery life.
Only a phone restart or force close of the app fixes the issue.
It doesn't happen too often anymore.

I have had my phone on this charge for 11h 28m and 46 seconds. My battery level is at 51%.
I have used the gallery today to show my work friends a couple of photos and a video. (about 30 seconds worth).
Gallery battery usage reports at 0.0%.
Something is wrong with your set up. The gallery works fine on my phone and doesnt drain the battery at all.
I suggest you are either using a custom rom that doesn process freeze the gallery, or you have an app killer that is killing the gallery.
I cant think of anything else it could be.
Hope you fix it anyway. GL
My phone takes a bit to load pictures too. I find that the droid in general needs a better way of shutting down unused programs. Too often do i need to restart my phone to get it working at top notch again.

My battery sucks lately. It may be since the last xloud update.
I can't get through a day just on standby. If I make a call or two it is dead before I get off work.
I use the task killer all the time and almost never use the gallery and don't use facebook. I do you Go launcher but it wasn't bad before the update.
Don't use the task killer. Install some scripts and custom Init. d scripts. Best way to conserve battery is to install juice defender ultimate
Saves battery 2x.
Lowring battery voltage also helps

Last update had a bug which drains the battery.
There is a fix thread on the forums somewhere that explains why it is bugged.
You need to go to settings, wireless and networks, mobile networks, network operators, then select manual instead of automatic.
The bug is basically that when you leave it on automatic, it will constantaly scan for radio signals whether you have a signal or not.
Took me a while to find out what it was, then someone else found a proper fix for it.
Can you tell me which forun and the thread title with those bugs?
Thanks for the Tip.

Hi ,
Download "advance task manager lite" off the Market. This is a very very helpful app which can close all your programs running and very simple to use. And it is Free.
If you need anymore help feel free to post back

There is no such app in my market. Can anyone share a free version? Thanks

It's a free version. The actual name is "Advanced Task Manager Lite" so do a search on "Advanced".
I did do a search and can't find it. Anyone else managed to find it under Rogers in Canada?
I can easy find it. I use it every day, but i find it a bit strange that you cant close apps in any other way! And alot of programs doesnt have a "Quit/Exit" function.
Does anyone have any explanation to why its not possible to close programs without download extra programs?
you know,
I think i heard Something about when you leave the app , it does actually sort of close.
It saves the state you left it in (freezes) and unfreezes when you enter it again. So really the App is not running or using any comsumption at all until you are in the app.

This is true.
It is because android is awesome at app management. There is no real need for closing apps. It leaves apps kinda open (saves their state in ram) but not running. That`s why most apps open so fast. And even though more ram is "in use" it doesn`t cost you battery life.
Thanks for confirming ,
What a fantatic way , The OS is fantastic and I can guarantee that Android has alot of potential and Can only get better and come up with more technological breaking idea's!!

but you can download Close Everything at Market for free.

Or what do you think killed the batt?

not all programs stop running. some are designed to run in the background
the only real way to check what is running is to use a task manager
I paid $0.99 for advanced task manager. Its a good, but basic app. And hardly breaks the bank at that price!
The other issue I get is "go slows" sometimes on the phone. It doesn't seem to crash, just response times go into the seconds. I switch off and on to soft reset and its fine.

My phone app has been slow since I got my Sprint Hero. But lately, it has gotten extremely slow. Almost unusable... it's slow to open, respond to input and ring when someone calls. Any ideas, tips or tricks on what the deal is?
I thought about trying to cut down my contact list to see if that helps, but I really hate the idea of not having all my contacts available on my phone.
Any other ideas to speed this thing up?
Thanks!
I'd try reflashing and if you dont want to go to that extreme I'd try to make sure to reboot the phone daily
Are you using a task manager? Also I find a reboot every 3 or 5 days is usually a good idea unless you clear out some of the memory hogging processes like Gmail storage and such. Generally I'll notice a bit of lag if I fall under 30mb of available memory.
I have considered reflashing, but was trying to see if there were any other solutions first. I've reflashed a few times and keep finding that after while, the phone app consistently slowed down.
I typically reboot about every 3-5 days... lately a little more. Rebooting has been much more effective that task killers.
I've read that some folks had problems with slow contacts, but is it also affecting their phone apps? How many contacts is too many for this thing? Is 130+ contacts too many for this phone to handle?
mine does EXACTLY this ... but only after I pull the phone off of charge.. the charge light stays on.. and bam.... its slow.... only fixes with a reboot
I have a lot of contacts
I have 1400+ contacts and my pone is not too slow.
Thanks
Mario
I like to use the "all people" widget its located under the live folders when adding stuff to your homescreens. Basically it just has a list form of your contacts.
Then when you select one it loads up the people app
I found out that some of the apps, were causing the problem, I started uninstalling apps, I guess most of the apps are made for 1.6 maybe because we are on 1.5 causes some kind of issue. that's just my theory...
In the mean time, you can try that.
I find the phone app very slow in response. It's very aggravating.
I noticed on the Fresh Rom, there is a note that the Location service may be what is causing the slow down in the phone app... I turned off location service yesterday and noticed an immediate response increase with the phone app. I'm not ready to call this a fix yet, but I am going to keep the location service off for a little while longer and see if it helps.
If anyone else is seeing the phone slowness, give this a try and let us know your results...
It does work. And for the sake of clarification, it's a 1.5-wide problem and affects all 1.5 ROMs.
Are you using the Facebook linking? I noticed when I had this feature on the phone and contacts apps. It's a cool feature but not worth the slow down.

Does that mean that Locale wouldn't work? I'd rather deal with the slower dialer if so.
Yes, I am using the Facebook linking. I could see that killing it too. I wish it would just import pictures and info over to my Google contacts. Any ideas on how to do that?
And yes, turning off the location feature will disable general location info from the phone. However, it can be re-enabled from settings...
It's a problem that has to do with apps using seperate threads to check your location, which builds up over time causing the location services to eat clock cycles like Rosi O'Donnel eats candy on Halloween. Disabling location services is a temporary fix, and Flipz thinks he's solved the problem in his 1.1 release by using Android's location services instead of HTC's

Are you linked to a Facebook account and running fresh 1.1, and there is no lag in the people(contacts) app?
I have a linked Facebook account on my Fresh 1.1 ROM and while there is an almost negligible lag in the phone/contacts application still, it is drastically snappier and quick to response compared to the Stock ROM.

I have most of my contacts linked to their respective facebook and flickr pages. Coldsweat says it best as "an almost negligible lag"...still present but not an issue in the slightest (.5 seconds). I am experiencing the same change with the contacts as well.
Give it a shot and post your results...I was very impressed.
FYI, I turned off Facebook sync (synced Facebook pics with SyncMyPix), dropped my slot cycle index to 1 and installed the Fresh 1.1 ROM. Holy crap. This thing is a screaming fast new phone
For those who are rooted (and not aware), Fresh ROM has come a long way and is really, very impressive. It's very fast and some of the interface mods are very attractive.
I have Home++ I use the kill all feature on the rocket dock. it then says your free memory is 160mb. which am happy with, and then 5 - 10 minutes later, with my phone just being idle, i click on to see what apps are running and. i have about 15 apps running. from doing nothing.
Not sure why my apps run automatically, also when i turn on my phone, every single app turns on. WTF!!!

thats simply not the way it works, let them run, if the o/s sees there is another program that wants some ram it will clear some by killing lesser priority apps.
I stopped using task killers about 3 weeks ago. My phone runs much quicker now I've stopped killing everything... Let the tech do it's own thing and it works surprisingly well....

have you even tried to use the phone without a task manager? the apps in the background are in a frozen state, which means they are simply cached in the ram so when you restart them they open instantly AND retain the old state. there is absolutely no reason to kill an program unless the program bugged out.
mine runs ok i have this kind of apps called FSFILE EXPLORER in this apps wen i hit the menu you can see task manager then all previous apps that i open it highlighted into green color hit kill selected witch is highlighted then memory increase.... nothing is running on the idle.

The advice of not killing aps doesn't really wash when you have apps that cause battery drain. I find that killing apps increases battery life.

ΝΟ. (ten characters)
So when the X10 first got released, everyone was blaming Moxier for being a battery pig regardless if you were using it or not. Are we now saying that isn't true?
That's correct - Moxier doesn't use any juice (not noticeable anyway).. I ran a test with wifi off and data/ mms off over night.. so it was just basically a dumb phone with loads of fancy apps.. it used 2% in about 8 hours...
No start up auditor, no task manager... I am running Helix Launcher.
It's natural to not want apps running in the background. What's the first thing you want to do to optimise your PC? Remove unused startup processes and background tasks. It's more important for a phone which has more limited resources than a PC.
I don't use Moxier Mail, Timescape or PlayNow. But for some reason they all open themselves up in the background every so often.
Iceman, I feel pretty lame for trying to manage the apps so much. Going to try a the same test tonight to see what happens.

Since I received the OTA update, WatchDog has notified me several times that the Gallery is a CPU hog, using 78-80% resources. I have to kill it to stop.
Anyone else have this issue?
Things that I have done to try and fix the problem:
- Blank removable card , still have the same issues.
- I did a complete wipe/factory reset and still have the same issues.
- I cleared data through System Settings which recreated thumbnails and other data, still have the same issues.

Nobody else is having this issue? I just received the message again, multiple times I day, but this time I havent even used the Gallery since I rebooted my phone.
No, I'm not having this issue at all. And luckyduck, you really shouldn't use task killers especially with those settings. Use Auto Killer instead. It used Android's built-in memory management system and tweaks it.
I had this happen when it did it's first media scan but only the first time after first boot from JI6

I've had the same exact issue as you.
Starting when the update came through, after every reboot, Watchdog notifies me that Gallery is hogging anywhere from 40-60% CPU. It behaves this way for a few minutes and then goes back down to normal CPU usage.
Not sure what it's doing after we reboot but it never did this before JI6.

As is mine. Sometimes it just freezes all together and I have to take out the battery. This is since J16 update. I am hoping to find a new pic viewer because this is crazy!
I've been having the issue also, but I've been able to recover out of it to avoid taking the battery out. Just takes a few seconds to get out of the gallery and close the gallery app. Usually works after that.

This happens to me also. Every time I reboot and go to Gallery for the first time it freezes, a few times it locked up my phone like an old PC Windows OS. It just froze. Reboot is the only way back.
This must have something to with building its initial cache? Just thinking because its on the first start after boot. Wonder if its a bug in writing the initial cache. The Gallery is based on a program called Cool Iris, the web version uses rss feeds to display the effect. I have worked on web sites with this code. I have yet to find the code in the galaxy and am not yet familiar with the stand alone program. Its all packaged up in one big app.
Be nice to have a fix for the fix.....
This happened before I installed OCLF 2. and after installation OCLF on JI6 official via ODIN, Accurate battery mod and Mobile AP mod.
Edit 1: I just started Gallery for a test and it locked up on "loading image". This time i just let it sit. It stayed frozen for 7 minutes then the screen went blank. After that without touching it, the phone rebooted itself and started back up. I'd say this is no small bug. Crud.
Edit 2: If I can get to open once without a crash, I can open and close it a few times and it gets faster. If I leave alone and do not open it for a view hours it starts slow again but does not crash. Talk about lag! Its like 30 seconds to load. Yuck, not a good bug fix if it causes new bugs...
Well, I feel better knowing I'm not the only one with this issue. It's really frustrating to want to show off pictures only to have to wait five minutes to cycle through the rebooting process. What a drag.
I would just like to add that another thing I noticed after the update is that sometimes when I snap a picture and switch over to the gallery to view it, the gallery won't even show the most recently snapped photo. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't, but when it doesn't show, I back out of the gallery and go back in one or two times for it to show up.
I just noticed this today too. Was working fine before. I did note in the JI6 update that there was a Kernel revision...I wonder if it was for the gallery "Kernel: 3D library patch"
~SB
I wish we had a change log that was better then what was officially sent out; "... plus forty or more bug fixes..." that tells me zero. I can get more from a solo app writing Dev, that just did an upgrade to for his app. Anyone know of a decent change log?
I have not seen these issues widely reported either, anyone else?
As far the Gallery being a resource hog are you guys saying more than before the update? Because just the nature of the app, I would assume it would be just by it bells and whistles. The reason I ask is sometimes when an app is troubled or needs a fix they "fix" it just by giving it more priority to tap resources.
I'm just guessing here... my Gallery worked perfect before the update. As the Gallery goes, I don't even know what the original Ji6 fix was for. Shrug*~
Still a great phone. But I used to love to show off the gallery, I'm photographer and I have some final prints loaded. It was a great marketing tool to get my work in shops and galleries. The Galaxy S. Tab will be my walking portfolio, 'can't wait.

Current widget is fine (even reporting every minute, drain is negligible), as is g-mail auto-sync as long as the interval is reasonable say hourly or longer, whats causing issues with spare-parts?
how do you reduce the intervals of auto-sync, because I couldn't find this option on my dhd.
For spare parts, I was just asking.
I heard the stock sms messaging app drains a lot of battery too, so I am switching to Go sms and see if it helps.

I'd say that the sms app draining is just another rumor. And for the first post none of the listed drain much. My settings everything on (3g) and not current widget but battery monitor widget and the average drain when idle around 3-5 mA with occasional peaks, due to data transfer while syncing. Also whatsapp on and various other background apps. Oh and CM7 latest build.
i really hate gmail
it gives huge spikes..
Where I check my Partial Wage Usage with SpareParts
I am getting these items
Dialler (Most usage)
UID 10030
Android System
Maps
GO SMS
Messaging
Calender Storage.
How can I disable Maps and the stock Messaging app? I don't why they are there since I have location turn off, gps turn off. And I turn off auto-retrieve and notification for my default messaging app.
What exactly is Dialler? what does it do?
Can anyone help. My phone is burning insane amount of battery during stand-by.
Spare parts? I think it works ondemand basis. I think YouTube is another app preventing sleep.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

Current widget is fine (even reporting every minute, drain is negligible), as is g-mail auto-sync as long as the interval is reasonable say hourly or longer, whats causing issues with spare-parts?

I haven't found any way to do it, people say you can change it when you factory reset, but otherwise, you can't
Maybe Gmail uses push, so updated on demand... (just guessing)
yes, auto-sync practically is push mail, but there isn't an option you can change it to fetch intervals instead?
I can use the stock email app, but its so crap!
Anyone know any decent email client solution for android?

If there's some strange drain by maps have you tried manually closing it from the settings-applications while you don't actually use it? That should do it.
thing is I killed it using android assistant and they just start pop up again.
and I haven't even used it to begin with.

+1 mate, I haven't used it in the first place and I tried force closing it and it still comes back.

Yep, that's the problem with closing apps with task killers etc, if android thinks it should be running it will restart it
Titanium Backup has been preventing sleep on my phone recently for some reason.

I'm not using task killers, but still maps is there preventing my phone from sleeping for like 1-2 hours my phone is running 48% while in reality I'm not touching it nor even waking it from sleep. It just ticks me off.

Seriously if you use the "killed selected" option to terminate these processes it will just drain more battery. These processes will get restarted as soon as they are killed. That's the android way. I am already thinking dumping this function in my app - Android Assistant. The reason I let it stay is there are still some android 2.1 users and they need this feature.
If you are thinking about saving battery, root your phone and uninstall all unneccessary battery-draining apps
or use the normal way to save battery: turn off gps, bluetooth, wifi, lower screen brightness etc.(and these are also available in Android Assistant )
I un-installed maps and im good to go since i use Co-pilot
No problems with titanium backup pro
