play vs milestone x2 - Xperia Play General

Hello, I currently have the xperia play and I am loving the emulators on it, however the ps1 and n64 ones seem to have slowdown on them. I have the opportunity to get the Motorola milestone x2 and was wondering if I should. I know the controls won't be as good since it doesn't have a built in gamepad, but how would emulation improve? Would it run ps1 and n64 games better and if so, is it significant?

No it wouldn't run much faster if any. The problem is emulators only use one core, so a second core isn't helping. Out of curiosity what's your xplay setup because I get no ps1 lag and only a tad of lag in a few n64 games.

Well I don't even have the ps1 one on my phone now because i had a hard time getting games to play. The 64 emulator I use is mupen64 xperia play edition. I have default setting enabled. I do use sound but I have disabled it on occasion and really don't notice a difference. It plays decent most of the time, but every 30 seconds or so, it will lag out for about 3 seconds and screw me up if I'm running on Mario or rounding a corner in Mario kart. I just want to optimize the emulator the best I can. I know it won't always be perfect, but I feel it could be better.

It might be sdcard related. I noticed that with Dungeon Hunter 2 if I have the apk. moved sd card the game lags really badly. As soon as I moved it back to phone memory the game hardly has any stutters ( still has some but very few and not very bothersome).
Do you have the emulator itself moved on sd card?

No gamepad so not in the same league. No comparison.

If you wait until the milestone 4 comes out it will emulate games better than the xperia but of course you will loose the real game controls.

Overclock your Play and you never see again slowdown

Agreed with the overclocking. It'll vary from device to device, but I OC mine at 1.4Ghz and it runs most things peachy keen.

Giving the phones he named, I'm guessing he is on Cspire. If thats the case then there is no telling when the Milestone 4 will arrive, if ever. They are always late as hell getting good phones.

What is gaming without control?

n64oid still lags for me at 1.5ghz
I think it's due to:
coding and resolution
My old droid played mario kart perfectly, that said, it looks beautiful the XP.

Games for Galaxy?

Hey guys, where can I get some nice games for the new toy? On Android Market there aint' that much, and on the Samsung Store the only one available is Asphalt 5.
Where do you people go to look for games? I've seen a lot of videos with people testing N.o.v.a. on the Galaxy S but where did they get it?
http://www.gameloft.com, I downloaded the motorola Droid versions since there are no Galaxy versions. Workin just fine. Downloaded NOVA and Modern Combat: Sandstorm there.

How do u find gaming in GalaxyS? Is the sensor accurate?
I'm concerned since I really like playing in the Iphone and I hope its as much fun
You can always use an emulator like gameboid and others to emulate everything from nes to gba games, I find that a gba game offers a lot more depth than the average ios/android game, also brings back the feeling from the old days .
The gaming experience is really smooth on the Samsung. This is where the superamoled really is good. I think there are som vids on youtube where a galaxy runs nova and modern combat. Might want to check those out

can you please confirm if gameboid works and the SNES emulator? i heard it doesnt pick up the roms properly.......
ZUMA would look nice on this phone
GameBoid not working for me, at leat it didn't the one time it installed before I had to factory reset the phone again (stupid download unsuccessful error - can't install apps!).

It appears it doesnt work properly, atleast gameboid doesnt, hangs after I select the rom (it shows the image where I last saved and hangs there with distorted sounds, however the application still works, I can still press menu and go to settings etc). It did work fine on my htc desire before, so I'm gonna try some things to make it work.
The snes emulator works great, played mario kart the other day.
the gba one doesn't however
Anyone else find asphalt 5 doesnt have a particularly good fps? raging thunder 2 and all the other games seem to be 60fps. Looking forward to games to start using ogl 2.0
Asphalt 5 is not really optimized, it performs horribly on pretty much every device out there.
The motorola droid runs is pretty well, but ONLY the droid.
As for the rest of the games- Everything that works on the droid/milestone will work on the Galaxy S
All current mobile processors are based on Cortex A8 with ARMv7 instruction sets, and both devices contain SGX series 5 graphics. The difference between 530 and 540 doesn't really matter, pretty much the same driver.
My guess is that after 1 or two firmware updates for the device things will be running a hell of a lot smoother.
Give it some time, the nexus and droid also had some childhood sickness untill stuff started running perfectly.
asphalt runs sweet as a nut on my galaxy s. so does raging thunder
Toonwarz looks like its running pretty well...
i like bridge, solitair and quake, also search for chromatatron.. laser puzzle logic games i like a lot.
Did someone have the chance to check out H.A.W.X?
And generally, the galaxy S should be pretty much a gaming beast, with the large 4" screen which is probably the best in the market right now, and SGX540, which is the strongest GPU around, untill the snapdragon 8672 sees light (and might still be the strongest even after that)
Tested and verified games and fullscreen..
Asphalt 5
Tower Bloxx
Tangram Pro (love this game..)
Flight Frenzy
The Game of Life
Surviving High School
New York Nights 2 (nice but not full screen though.. for 3.5 - 3.7 screen)
Bonsai Blast
Katamari Mobile (love this game..)
Mechanics Touch
Sally's Spa
The Gube - 3D Rubik's Cube
..still testing others.. it is very tiring to install and uninstall the games even when using ASTRO. hehehe

[DISCUSS] psx4droid and XPERIA Play

so i have a paid version of psx4droid v2 on the x10 and it lags on most psx games. i want to know if the lag is mainly related to the CPU or the GPU?
it looks like the Xperia Play is going to be exclusively offered in Canada first and i will try to get my hands on one on launch day but would like to know how much psx emulation will be improved with the Xperia Play compared to the X10.
i'm a die hard SE fan but with the atrix and galaxy s II offering dual-core 1GHz and larger batteries, it will be difficult to stay loyal. i want my next phone to be able to play psx without lag since that is the most resource-intensive thing i do on the phone and was wondering if the Play will be up to the task with its newer CPU (Qualcomm 8255 vs 8250) and its newer GPU (Adreno 205 vs 200).
i need your input please.
good question I think cause it's android and cause it's gaming oriented maybe it won't lag but there's just a chance that xperia play has it's own games this means games created to use it's processor, ram, etc
not sure if psxdroid won't lag
Try FPse... It's a much better playstation emulator, it doesn't lag at all for me!
Also, try messing with the settings, some games require you to change the framerate and such, i found out some games ran alot smoother. Otherwise, like fiscidtox said, FPse.

that explains why i couldn't find it on the market..
guess i'll have to switch to 2.2+ as i'm still using the stock 2.1. but that makes me feel confident that i won't need a dual-core CPU to run PSX games, i just need a better emulator (FPseCe).
before I do the rom upgrade, can anyone tell me if the emulator features custom hardware button mapping? i have a datel bluetooth wireless gamepad that works off the WiimoteControl software as i can't stand playing using the on-screen controls. will i be able to use it with FPseCe?

yep you can do that!
thanks. i have another question to add: i still haven't made the update yet to see for myself but with psx4droid, it only reads directional buttons (up, down, left, right) but doesn't read diagonal movements making action games very hard to play (most of the psx roms i have are all action). i use my datel bluetooth controller on my sony vaio using a psx emulator and it reads diagonal movements fine so i know the controller is not the problem.
i want to know if anyone has tried a bluetooth game controller with FPseCe and if diagonal movements work fine. if it doesn't, the problem can either be related to the wiimote controller plug-in software or in the FPseCe emulator itself. the reason i ask this is because if it doesn't work, then there's a chance the xperia play's diagonal actions on the directional buttons won't work either. this is the last criteria on my list on whether the xperia play will be my next phone. otherwise, there's no point in getting the phone because i find playing psx games much more fun than android-based games.. and that i might as well go for the Arc instead for the premium hawtness and larger lcd.
on a random side note, i've just realized the trend in how long i have been keeping my phones before going out to buy a new one... t68i (3 years), s700i (2.5 years), p1i (2 years), x1a (1.5 years), x10a (8 months and counting)......... i'm planning to get the Play or Arc in 2 months but i wonder how long that will last me until i decide to upgrade again.... 6 months?
Yes I'm using a wiimote and diagonal works perfectly... Trust me it is a much better emulator. There is nothing psx4droid can do that this can't.
On another note, play or arc are both ridiculous in my mind.. Technology that is already dated and, as you said, will require upgrade in a few months..I'd save your money and keep x10...
the reason i want to switch phones is because my battery is not holding a charge and lasts about half the day with little use. also, all the batteries on ebay are all garbage and a legit bst-41 battery is almost $100 total (last time i checked).
the reason i bought the x10 was because the battery in my x1a wouldn't hold a charge to last for more than 4 hours on standby only. at the time i got my x10 for $420 from someone who upgraded his wife's phone who didn't need it. at that price, it came with a new battery making the phone itself cost only about $320.
so rather than buying a new battery, why not upgrade to another phone that has the same battery (bst-41)? the way i see it, i will be getting a discount on the xperia play since it includes a new battery already that comes included with the price.
i totally agree with it not having any real significant hardware advantage over the x10 but the fact that it comes with game controls built-in is what is winning me over. i predict the next time SE will be coming out with another flagship android smartphone won't be for another year and i don't think i'll be able to hold on to my x10 for that long. i'm not a fan of other brands as they all put soft-touch buttons at the bottom and most of them also don't make phones that have the same sort of quality feel and design as SE.
I really don't find SE makes that quality of a feeling phone.. It is very plastic and feels like it would break easily. Plus the screen is pretty flimsy...
I love my x10, but I never got how people say that the build quality of x10 is spectacular.

I tried fpse it's smooth indeed, but i can't save game any spot i want, i can't assign hardware key, the onscreen keyboard of landscape is crap, or am I missed something?
You can assign hardware keys, just go to input in settings. As for saving I'm not sure I haven't yet but I'm sure you can
read the user manual now got all those function work but still a major problem.
playing ff7 the character is always moving against my will, did you guys experience something like this?
My nexus one pays most emulated games well. N64 games are really not paying well though. Hoping that although xperia play is the same cpu, the better graphics card will help.

Gaming capabilites?

Hey there everyone!
I thought about getting the Xperia Arc but before actually deciding to do so I wanted to get clear knowledge on the performance in gaming, and maybe if there's any noticeable difference between that one and the Xperia Play, which I also thought about, but I'm not quite sure about deciding on the controller or the Bravia Engine and Exmor Sensor... both very nice to have actually.
Well, I already know that the Play is good for gaming, but how does the Arc fare? I heard it has a newer Qualcomm CPU in there, but are the 512 MB of RAM (or... what is available of it) any hindrance?
Maybe someone could try out some high(er)-end games?
There are lite versions of:
Raging Thunder 2
GUN BROS
Dungeon Defenders
Crazy Snowboard
on the Market to name a few examples... I'd be really curious as to how the framerates are on the device, perhaps also the emulation capabilites (gameboid and fpse)? Framerates or stutters or something of the sort?
Would be really great to hear some responses!
Regii
The Xperia play and Arc have the same CPU and RAM. so what i think is that they both have same horse power.
But it's up to you to make a decision are you gonna use it to play games or you wanna take pictures. OS is the same only the play got the interface to play PS games (or something like that)
I played gun bro's on nexus one that has a older version of CPU&GPU but it could handel it without problems.
here you can compare the two phones > http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3619&idPhone2=3608 you won't see that much difference.
Good luck choosing your phone
Quite right, thanks. My reference website didn't have the Scorpion listed as the Play's CPU.
Do you own one of these? Because even though they have the same horsepower, I don't know about performance in Dungeon Defenders or so, e.g.
The Playstation interface is unnecessary to me since I'd play emulators anyway, but the controller is quite attractive, even though I already got quite used to touchscreen controls on my G3 as well...

Thanks a lot If an Unreal Engine 3 game runs smooth, almost anything else will as well. And, as far as I heard, Play comes with Froyo and not Gingerbread, the Arc is the one with stock Gingerbread.
Think I'll actually go for the arc as the Bravia engine and the design are just tooo tempting! Thanks for the help!

Not Working

The game was developed with Unreal Engine 3, so no wonder there. Just wondering: what about the random reboots someone reported? Heard they had a connection to the game.
gun bros works a treat, looks great on the arcs screen, dungeon defenders works a treat too, how ever ive seen lag in older games, like this ninja game where u run up walls, it lags when you jump accross walls, also abduction2 lags at times when jumping
ive noticed that games like gun bros and dungeondefenders look really crisp and sharp... yet other games are a bit fuzzy, like they aint optimised for sharp screens
That's because 2D games like Ninjump only have a fixed resolution and can only upscale on high-res displays like the Arc's. 3D Games like DD or Gun Bros can always be rendered at a higher resolution.
Gotta say though that I experienced some lag in Dungeon Defenders with much going on on the screen.

[Q] Good Turned Based RPG

Well I got my Play and got Eternal Legacy, which I beat today [Graphics were great, story was terrible, was also too short and lastly the ending was disappointing, or better yet - Non Existent].
So, now I need a new turned based RPG. I have noticed that all the good RPGs [and games generally] are on the Iphone with no android ports.
Can anyone suggest a good turn based RPG. Please don't say emulators, because the PlayStation emulators still can't get the games to run smoothly anyway. It's hard to go back to PlayStation graphics after playing Eternal Legacy.
Someone suggested Golden Sun 2 for Gamboid, however, I tied it and the sound is choppy [just like FPse] and it always restarts after the long text intro right when the characters appear on the screen for the first time.
Final fantasy 7 works great for me on fpse. Best RPG ever
I knew someone was going to come on here and say that..Final Fantasy 7 does not work properly on the Play, that's why there is a bounty on cracking the code of native psx emulator on the Play so that games can be played using it. Final Fantasy 7 on FPse is a miserable experience in terms of audio and it slows down a bit, far from "great." And like I said, after playing Eternal Legacy, or just generally speaking, it's hard to go back to PlayStation 1 graphics. Playstation 2 Fine, 1...nononono....
If you don't want to rely on emulation, Symphony of the Eternity looks like a valid starting point, though it's not optimized for the gamepad. However, good stories are hard to find anywhere, and sometimes a further problem lies on bad translations (Zenonia's case).
Forget those games get fpse and a rom called chrono cross.
If you own the game in the past of course.
Sent from my R800a using XDA Premium App
Yeah I would def play Chrono Cross, it got a very good review from IGN and I loved Chrono Trigger, once again it's just that FPse has not been able to run ANY game smoothly [ie without sound or graphics problems] so I am a bit reluctant... As for Symphony of the Eternity, I guess I could try that, though it's hard to go back to those sort of graphics after just completing Eternal Legacy.
Oh by the way symphony of the eterinty is optimized for the play, i was just playing it. It controls with the plays directional arrows etc.
jdz...I know fpse isn't perfect, but the three games I play right now (Nectaris: Military Madness...which is an AWESOME turn-based strategy game, Castlevania:Symphony of the Night, and Destruction Derby) all run flawlessly or next to flawlessly so there are some that are there or really close to perfect. I highly recommend Nectaris if you're a fan of the genre. Playstation graphics obviously but if you can get past that you'll love the gameplay.
thanks for the reply/advice, will check them out.
I can't find Eternal Legacy on the android market, am I missing something?

There's no slowdowns at all, only slight oddities in the sound, no where near unplayable.

It's not "optimized" for the Xperia Play so you have to download a version from gamelofts website thats made for the snapdragon processors.
Two words: Spectral Souls
It got everything, story, graphics, xperia optimized... etc
IGN gave spectral Souls a bad review:
http://psp.ign.com/articles/742/742395p1.html
It turns out that the bad score was given mainly due to the long and frequent loading moments. If that is not an issue on Android, and it doesn't have to be if they did a good job, then it may make sense. But, man, 10 euro for a ported-to-phone game... it's hard to justify.

If you read the review they gave it a lower score because of loading issues, which is no longer an issue in the Android version.
The game is pretty good all around. Not spectacular, but still good.

Holy crap, that's some good music actually! It's getting better and better. Maybe I'll try and give it a try. How much space does it take?

On your phone it takes 5.77MB and downloads a gig worth of data to your SD card.
If you are a fan of that style of game play (final fantasy tactics, disgaea) then this game will be right up your alley.
Story-wise so far for me it has been average, not as good as FFT, but it's decent enough. It provides a way to play both sides of the storyline, so that adds to the overall enjoyment.
I didn't mind paying 1200 yen for this game. It shows it has a lot more production value than the average mobile game.
What really surprises me is that Android doesnt havent more quality RPGS, I mean mobile devices should be a haven for turned based RPGs because they are actually easy to control with the touch screen. Why is it that more big "well known" RPGs are not on android? Why for example is their a Final Fantasy game on Android? It's on 360 and PS3, so it's not to say that it's an exclusive title to one of the consoles. Come on, esp for a device like the Xperia Play, Sony should be well aware that this device could be the RPG gamers dream come true.

Ppsspp emulator settings

Has anyone else tried the ppsspp emulator? I loaded Wipeout Pure and after changing a few setting, the best I get is a slightly slow version with no sound and frame skipping. That was the most playable I could get it. When I first loaded it it was total slow motion. Wipeout is a confirmed working game for this emu so I'm interested to see what settings combos people may have found that work for the OUYA.

I'm kind of wondering this myself. Every game I try with it runs super slow.
I wouldn't expect PPSSPP to run smoothly on Mobile processors anytime soon if at all
Getting decent performance is still a challenge for PC users as the emulator is still in its early stages

^ This.
PPSSPP is cool, but little more than a proof of concept at this point. It's hardly playable on any platform.

Thanks folks. I hope to some day be able to run wild with some WipeOut. I'll keep an eye on the devs progress and repost if we see some headway in the future.

Was messing around with this app last night. No luck getting any games to run smoothly, however I do see some potential. Tried both god of war games and they were very choppy. Only the movies within the game played fine. Dragonball Budokai ran pretty decent but the sound was off. Burnout had no music and was very choppy. Call of Duty starts but than goes to a black screen. You can hear the music but nothing else.
Tweaked the settings quit a bit but just couldn't get any to play right. Hopefully, they can get this up and running on the Ouya.
Not all games play slow. Here is a list so far that play fine (smooth with sound) on my Excite 7.7, TF300, Nook HD+ and S4.
Burnout Dominator
Guilty Gear Judgment
Hotshots Open Tee
Namcom Battle Museum
Lumins 1 (not 2)
Star Soldier
Street Fighter Alpha 3 remix
Guilty Gear XX
Megaman Powerup
Metal Slug XX
Blaz Blue (both games)
Need for Speed Carbon
NeoGeo Shooter (it is a shootemup with different NeoGeo characters)
Full Auto 2
I actually own the PSP games to compare to, except NeoGeo shooter. For some reason, it would not work on my PSP when I tried it out and local Disc Replay gamestore.
More games do not work than do, but I was impressed enough to contribute. There are some others that work, but I have most on my tablets and only a few on my S4- going by memory of what does.
The forums seem to have a thread going for hints on how to improve speeds: http://forums.ppsspp.org/showthread.php?tid=5236
Some games need Buffered Rendering.
Some games have no sound unless you download the unofficial atrac3 library from within the app.
The topic started on May, when the version in the stores was 0.8.1. Checked for updates since then? Last version in the store is 0.9.1, and last version on git is 0.9.1.2xx.
I've noticed a huge speed boost from setting the frame buffer to the gpu, some games are actually playable although the full 3d ones are still at about 65%. Hopefully the official ouya release will work better.
I haven't tried it on my OUYA, but one of my friends said using a PSP emulator and connecting his OUYA to a projector was a winning combination.
I have tried PPSSPP on my NVIDIA Shield (Tegra 4) and at first I was skeptical about it - audio was choppy and performance wasn't great in some situations, but then like the next day there was an update to PPSSPP and since then it has been running phenomenal (at least on the games I care about). I love using the "Unthrottle" feature to essentially fast forward the game too
So if you haven't tried it in a while you might give it another go. Shield is of course more powerful than OUYA, but you might at least have better results than before.

I play ppsspp on my phone with my friends all the time multiplayer It's cool and runs fast
I installed ppsspp on my samsung galaxy note 4. And it's absolutely amazing. Played tekken 6 in full 60 fps. But Wipeout pulse is lagging in some parts of the racing track (always at the same places. The framerate is constantly at 40 fps then, but the game runs really slow. Doesn't matter what settings I apply
