Well I got my Play and got Eternal Legacy, which I beat today [Graphics were great, story was terrible, was also too short and lastly the ending was disappointing, or better yet - Non Existent].
So, now I need a new turned based RPG. I have noticed that all the good RPGs [and games generally] are on the Iphone with no android ports.
Can anyone suggest a good turn based RPG. Please don't say emulators, because the PlayStation emulators still can't get the games to run smoothly anyway. It's hard to go back to PlayStation graphics after playing Eternal Legacy.
Someone suggested Golden Sun 2 for Gamboid, however, I tied it and the sound is choppy [just like FPse] and it always restarts after the long text intro right when the characters appear on the screen for the first time.
Final fantasy 7 works great for me on fpse. Best RPG ever
I knew someone was going to come on here and say that..Final Fantasy 7 does not work properly on the Play, that's why there is a bounty on cracking the code of native psx emulator on the Play so that games can be played using it. Final Fantasy 7 on FPse is a miserable experience in terms of audio and it slows down a bit, far from "great." And like I said, after playing Eternal Legacy, or just generally speaking, it's hard to go back to PlayStation 1 graphics. Playstation 2 Fine, 1...nononono....
If you don't want to rely on emulation, Symphony of the Eternity looks like a valid starting point, though it's not optimized for the gamepad. However, good stories are hard to find anywhere, and sometimes a further problem lies on bad translations (Zenonia's case).
Forget those games get fpse and a rom called chrono cross.
If you own the game in the past of course.
Sent from my R800a using XDA Premium App
Yeah I would def play Chrono Cross, it got a very good review from IGN and I loved Chrono Trigger, once again it's just that FPse has not been able to run ANY game smoothly [ie without sound or graphics problems] so I am a bit reluctant... As for Symphony of the Eternity, I guess I could try that, though it's hard to go back to those sort of graphics after just completing Eternal Legacy.
Oh by the way symphony of the eterinty is optimized for the play, i was just playing it. It controls with the plays directional arrows etc.
jdz...I know fpse isn't perfect, but the three games I play right now (Nectaris: Military Madness...which is an AWESOME turn-based strategy game, Castlevania:Symphony of the Night, and Destruction Derby) all run flawlessly or next to flawlessly so there are some that are there or really close to perfect. I highly recommend Nectaris if you're a fan of the genre. Playstation graphics obviously but if you can get past that you'll love the gameplay.
thanks for the reply/advice, will check them out.
I can't find Eternal Legacy on the android market, am I missing something?

There's no slowdowns at all, only slight oddities in the sound, no where near unplayable.
Honestly it's hard to find good new rpg's on any platform.

You have done somthing wrong to your play then m8 FF7 8 and 9 all run perfect for me with no slowdowm and perfect sound, i let my brother run around coral for a bit in FF7 and his responce was "wow this runs better than it did on the playstation"

It's not "optimized" for the Xperia Play so you have to download a version from gamelofts website thats made for the snapdragon processors.
Two words: Spectral Souls
It got everything, story, graphics, xperia optimized... etc
IGN gave spectral Souls a bad review:
http://psp.ign.com/articles/742/742395p1.html
It turns out that the bad score was given mainly due to the long and frequent loading moments. If that is not an issue on Android, and it doesn't have to be if they did a good job, then it may make sense. But, man, 10 euro for a ported-to-phone game... it's hard to justify.

If you read the review they gave it a lower score because of loading issues, which is no longer an issue in the Android version.
The game is pretty good all around. Not spectacular, but still good.

On your phone it takes 5.77MB and downloads a gig worth of data to your SD card.
If you are a fan of that style of game play (final fantasy tactics, disgaea) then this game will be right up your alley.
Story-wise so far for me it has been average, not as good as FFT, but it's decent enough. It provides a way to play both sides of the storyline, so that adds to the overall enjoyment.
I didn't mind paying 1200 yen for this game. It shows it has a lot more production value than the average mobile game.
What really surprises me is that Android doesnt havent more quality RPGS, I mean mobile devices should be a haven for turned based RPGs because they are actually easy to control with the touch screen. Why is it that more big "well known" RPGs are not on android? Why for example is their a Final Fantasy game on Android? It's on 360 and PS3, so it's not to say that it's an exclusive title to one of the consoles. Come on, esp for a device like the Xperia Play, Sony should be well aware that this device could be the RPG gamers dream come true.

I was curious as to how many are using their Evo as a gaming device as well as its other uses. I started off playing some of the simple arcade and puzzle style games but I have recently been playing a couple of fps games from gameloft and I realize that there is a lot of potential for the evo if the developers will continue with it.
I'm playing home run battle 3d and a couple of other games.

Yeah I have been playing quite a bit of old NES games with nesoid.
CM6 + wiimote + wii steering wheel + gps dash mount + dremel + gorilla glue = emulator fun. I have been mostly playing old SNES games, but I have a 40 minute bus ride to & from work so I have to kill the time somehow.
Until I saw the demo for NOVA and Sandstorm I never realized that 3d gaming had come so far for android. Those are the 2 main games that I am playing right now.
It's perfect for RPG's which is my favorite type of games. Play final fantasy tactics as we speak. I never owned a ps1 myself so theres a lot of rpg games for me to play.
Am I the only who likes Meteor Blitz? It's just about my favorite handheld game of all time! Like a Geometry Wars mobile.
PSXDroid is pretty nice. I continually encounter graphical glitches though, which is utterly annoying.
SandStorm is neat, Nova is a fun FPS as well. Pretty much most of Gamelofts releases are enjoyable. Well, minus Assassin's Creed.
There's a guy working on Starcraft for Android, but I think the projects gone dead in the water.
Finally, Quake III on Android. Or, Kwaak3
Also, this may not be the best place to post anything about iOS, because I know quick people can be to hate on the iPhone. But Steve Jobs aside, who else is impressed by Epic Game's Infinity Blade and Mutant Bash TV by Id running on the Rage iOS engine?
I'm totally floored by it to be honest. Had no idea a 1GHz processor with 512MB RAM could achieve graphics on this level.
It's only a matter of time before a company creates an engine like this for Android Devices. Development is either already in the works or right around the corner.
*Cough* PSP Phone *Cough*
The prospects are incredible! The only thing that bugs me is that I use to play my old GameBoys till the battery died when I was out and about. It will just really suck if I do the same with my EVO. That would put my day dead in the water if I didn't have a back up battery or wall outlet near by....
I am waiting patiently for oooecao to release their games!

I know, they just need to come out with a decent controller for handheld devices. I almost want to go out and pick up a WiiMote just for my EVO. I have a PS3 controller but I've read that it will probably never happen because of technicalities with bluetooth between the two. I use my PS3 Controller to play Halo on my Netbook, so much fun! Makes airplane flights a breeze.
Just put a vice grip on a pad with a few buttons and put on a MicroUSB connector with an input on the pad for charging and call it done.
I keep reading about people whom have tested some of these Rage iOS games complaining that the controls blow. Especially Mutant Bash TV, it's tilt shift. I mean REALLY!? I tend to get p'd off at DoodleJump, let alone an FPS.
Stock ROM, unREVOked. Theme is custom.
Better off with a epic, you got the keyboard for controls and better GPU.
which is my problem... I don't use my phone for gaming, so it has no use for me lol

Lol, 4 of my friends recently jumped on to the Epic from TP2's (we all get the same phones, its kinda wierd) But i have an Evo. I play games on mine and its pretty good, but i tell them that games play better on the Epic due to the GPU/CPU and none of them play games, haha.
I got the usual great android games on plus, snesoid, nesoid, gensoid, psx4droid. The emulators are much better when rooted with a kernel that allows for better multi touch,(I'm currently on kings bfs11). I have hundreds games just between the emulators. I would consider psx4droid unplayable unless u had such a kernel. The biggest problem with playing the games is the lack of better multi touch, and thats y I will never b unrooted again.
Swyped from my Evo
they need to change up the controllers. Instead of using the forward, back, left, right motions on the screen, use the gyroscope to do those, and then in the left hand have the movement of the gun, and in the right hand, have the shooting or w/e.
Has anyone here tried Heavy Gunner?
I've been on a real gaming spree ever since I got the Evo!
Super K.O Boxing is really nice
SpeedX 3D is my favorite!
N.O.V.A was a b*t*h to get working, but it's by far the most graphically intense game.
Caligo Chaser is alright if you like more cartoony RPGs. The best part of the game is that when you adjust your gear it visually reflects on the character, lots of choices too!
Fruit Ninja is a fun, friendly style, potentially competitive style game
I just tried Meteor Blitz, thanks for the recommendation! I do wish the movement controls were less sensitive however.
Android is a fantastic platform for gaming, unfortunately it's not the only one and developers are limited
I tried a couple of the emulators but the game rom's I downloaded showed the game on a tiny screen and the controls did not work well at all. I guess I need to try some different games roms. Sandstorm is as graphically intensive as NOVA if not more so. I tried Avatar but the gameplay was a little confusing for me at times. Bottom line is that android is a great gaming platform and the Evo is a good hard device for gaming. I have a kindle and a zuneHD and was getting ready to get a psp. Now the Evo is truly an all in one device for me. It will do what all of those will do. Sure it uses a lot of battery but I would rather switch batteries during the day than to cary 3 or 4 devices and chargers when I travel.
MMORPG: Pocket Legends. That thang was just released today.
?
so why is it so hard to get Need for speed shift? why not in the market? why are there no good games in the market? on my old iphone i played many awesome games like nfsshift, street fighter 4, fifa soccer, chaos rings most of all Grand theft Auto chinatown wars. when i look in the market, there a bunch of crappy games, i mean common no words with friends or scrabble or bejeweled? my opinion, get a 64 gb ipod touch, you get your games and great music integration with itunes, plus 32gb extra possible storage. and its thin. i love my evo but no-matter what mods i do to it its not good at graphic intensive stuff, i cant even run the ocean waves wallpaper without it choppin like Jackie chan.
p.s. also looked for pocket legends, nothing in market for that either

I'm looking start up a bounty to get a development effort going around the Native PSX Emulator that comes on the Xperia PLAY.
The preloaded Crash Bandicoot as well as the selection of PSX games available from Sony use this native emulator, the performance in which is PERFECT, compared to FPse and PSX4Droid which have sound and choppiness issues at times.
Some discussion on this topic is in another thread, here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044755 . We can see the psx image on the SD card with little effort, however the formatting of this image and the steps required to inject our own images is still unknown.
My ultimate goal here is to be able to run FF7 in the Native PSX emulator and support the disc changes needed. (From the PSX Emulator menus, disc swapping looks to be included, but as no multi-disc games are released, this may be tricky).
I'd like to throw in $20 to start this bounty and get discussion going.
Please post under this thread if you can contribute either to the bounty or to the development effort. If you have any requirements attached to your bounty contribution (ie: "Must be able to play FF7") then please include those as well.
Bounty now up to (or over): $280 + Xperia X1

Disc swapping is probably less of an issue than it sounds - you only have to swap discs once every 10-12 hours for most games, and almost every single game that has a disc swap also lets you save after completing the disc and before the swap, so in theory if the PSX Emulator only allows for once disc at a time, you just make a wrapped image of each disc, save when you hit the end of one disc, and boot the image for the second/third/etc disc and voila.
While ultimately it would be a great feature, it's probably not strictly necessary and will amount to a minor nuisance in the short term.
Also, put me down for $10CDN towards the bounty as well.
10 Euro more. As long as it works, I'm cool with it.
Nice idea.
But my games run perfect in fpse.
Tell me what games you find choppy and i'll test them for you. So far i've played -
Time Crisis (touch screen as light gun, dam awesome)
Demolition Derby
Rampage Universal Tour
Point Blank (touch screen as light gun, dam awesome)
Strider 2
Die Hard Trilogy
and they all run flawlessly.
Would of tried more but i've been hooked on the nes/snes/master system/genesis and native xperia play games (backstab/nova2 etc) for the last month.

The one I care most about is Final Fantasy 7. Battle sequences tend to be choppy, the sound slows to a crawl when coming into and out of battle. The music sound sync in general also just isn't perfect. It's "good enough" for the most part, but stammers a bit, feels like a beginner drummer that can't really keep time.

Yeah sound emulation is more difficult to do than it seems. A ton of emulators (even today's Gamecube/Wii emulator, or the PS2 one) have sound issues more than anything else.
Also, I'll throw in $20 CAD for this. Hopefully it's actually possible and Sony's emulator is actually already complete. It'd be a shame to crack it but only find out it needs to be patched by Sony anyway.

Yeah ive turned on sound sync. It helps but the sound is not accurate. It eliminates the stutter but the actual sounds are inaccurate, plus the graphics arent smoothed and are overly sharp and a bit ugly. Compared to the smoothed graphics of the official Sony emu they look poor. PSX games run at 1/2 the res of the Xperia screen so smoothing is essential. Fpse slows to a crawl when smoothed
Fpse is good, but still has a way to go before its good enough for me to use for everything.

Does the XPlays native emulator really have smoothing? I did think that Crash looked better than I remembered but put that down to the small screen and the fact that last time I played crash 1 was on a large HDTV.
I dont think it does, sony erricson has already done alot of things in an attempt to save the phones battery life (like the whole no autobrightness off thing)
I doubt they would add smoothing as it would get use up more of the CPU thus draining more battery life.
The only advantage I see with the official ps1 emulator is that fram rates are excellent and there are no graphical glitches.
Correct me if Im wrong, wouldn't one advantage be that Fpse doesn't really support the dual touch pads, but the native app should support them for any game launched through it.
Also for an update,

It does smooth, trust me - playing Wild Arms is proof enough for me - the graphics are softer and less pixellated than in FF7 via FPSE.
I'll see if I can take some comparative screenshots of Wild Arms in the Sony Emu vs FPSE (as I do have WA on CD as well) just to be 100% sure, but I'm already 99% sure it smooths (is that a word?).
Besides, smoothing wouldn't add that much hit to the battery - you're basically just talking about the bilinear interpolation function of the graphics chip, which is a pretty minor hit overall.
The reason FPSE chugs when smoothing is because FPSE is a generic Android app, written to work on ANY Android phone - so it probably has NO hardware GPU access at all - which in my opinion is pretty lame and shoddy programming. There are, what, like 30 different graphics chips currently used by Android devices? If I'm correct, they'd basically have to write in detection and calls for every chip into FPSE.
Whereas the Sony emulator was written explicitly for the Xperia Play and its hardware (the Adreno GPU). That's why it's 10x more efficient and faster than FPSE, and why it can turn on smoothing and still run better than FPSE does.
I know, my first post but trust me Im good for $10CAD

Opengl should solcem ost of the problems of the multitude of gpu chips there are as the calls to all the gpu's would become the same.
Also, to reply to an earlier post, the touchpads will probably be supported in a future version of fpse, probably the devs don't have an xperia play just yet.
The game ISO is in a file called image.ps and appears to be encrypted. That encryption will need to be cracked before we can do any sort of injection of PSX ISOs.
ill throw in £5 GBP ive tied reverse engineering the app, tried and failed; i dont know what source code their using, but i cant get it recognized by anything so far!
Are ? /surely modern games are better ,than the emulator ones ,that evry1 says to download ?
Depends what you enjoy i guess.
The Snes/Genesis era was fluctuated with an amazing amount of high quality platform games.
Try finding a modern day platform game that is better than Sonic the Hedgehog 1 for example.
Todays platform games are mostly shallow experiences compared to older games.
Older games were simply sold as any other toy, so they had to make the best out of your playing experience in order to make you a repeat customer. That involved using more thought out and complex game mechanics, longer play times and more engaging stories and characters, all allowed by the growing processing power of consoles.
Eventually multimillion dollar teams had to be used for those tasks, which made games not profitable. The adoption of distribution means originally used by pirates (aka the internet) and the huge success of the Wii with the casual gaming population allowed companies to cut costs on both distribution and production: casual gamers demand simple addictive games and they're more ready to fork out cash, so you can both cut the videogame store middleman by distributing on the internet and you can cut production costs because you need less cost intensive games.
Right now the game scene resembles a lot the commercial films scene: it's a dual environment with both independent low cost games whose success is a lottery and big budget games which have more or less a planned demand.
I enjoy emulating SNES and PSX a lot more than modern games. I just think those older games are much much more fun to play. And I really love pixel graphics. I have a PS3 at home which is pretty much unused as I emulate on the phone all of the time.
I play mostly RPG's. They story telling in them can't be matched in todays games in my opinion and the older graphics leaves much for my own imagination of things. I can relate more to older games and the feelings they are trying to convey.
spyro, crash, banjo , medievil , mvc , mk, metal slug, pokemon , zelda ,mario , donkey kong , star fox ,ff are simply too amazing!!! You just cant compare these masterpieces to modern games on Phone!
BUT! i still enjoy both the XPERIA games and the classic games ,and i think i play phone games more than classic games they are differenet , so it depends on how you view them. I bought my phone to play emulators , but the phone games had more quality than i expected, and ending up loving them aswell..
Both are good but emu is best. Most new games dont hold a candle to some older ones in terms of gameplay
You can't go wrong with emulators, some of the best games of all time came out in the 90's (Chrono Trigger, Earth Bound, FFVII VII IX, Mega Man X, Chrono Cross, Suikoden, Crash Bandicoot, Metal Gear Solid, Twisted metal, etc.) Not only that, the roms/emulators for SNES, Genesis, NES, and Gameboy Advanced take up FAR less memory than a modern game. The PS1 games are pretty big files (ranging from 300mb to 800mb per disc), but they're usually long amazing games so it's well worth the memory usage.
Iuno if I'll piss the above replies off with my response... but my days of being nostalgia drunken aren't as potent as they used to be.
Nowadays, I'm coming closer to a time where I absolutely can't stand a lot of the games I grew up on.
I hear a lot of people inferring that challenge is a thing that no longer exists in today's game... but once you remove the nostalgia shades, you see that older games weren't harder, they were just full of technical flaws, poor algorithms, outdated control schemes, laughable physics and archaic collision detection that made a game harder than it needs to be.
With that said, I have pretty much all the good emulators on my Xperia PLAY... and they barely ever get used. There's no way in hell I can go back to playing a game like Doom when I've got Dead Space on my Xperia PLAY. Street Fighter 2 seems like an imbalanced trainwreck of a game now, Final Fantasy's magic system was illogical, the jumping physics in a lot of the platformers makes no sense.
Iuno... I still gotta have my Kirby's Adventure and some of the old-school RPGs... but for the most part,I just don't really care to play some outmoded game that suffers from outdated control schemes, and must be stretched and distorted when I can get something newer that makes use of my Xperia PLAY's big, beautiful 854x480 screen.
Take FPS for example... I have some of my fondest childhood memories of putting SNES FPS on the hardest setting and giving my all to make it through. It was a rush and I loved it... back in the day. Play them nowadays, and first thing you recall is
"OMFG, did we really use L/R to strafe back then?"
"Okay... so if R is strafe, how the **** did I shoot? ...oh... the X button... dis-a-point-ING."
"...wait... so I had to use a different button to aim on more than one axis?! WHAT IS THIS I DONT EVEN"
I recently also tried to play Killer Instinct and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters (the SNES one, of course) because I remember liking those as a kid too... oh my God... the collision detection was half retarded, and I quickly made that link to figure out balance in fighting games didn't really come 'til the late PlayStation/Dreamcast days.
Newer games like Cordy, Meganoid, INC, Stardash and Pixeline may not have franchise and nostalgia backing it... but they *work* a lot better than old school platformers do.
Same goes for pretty much every genre except RPG... and especially shooters/racers/sports/fighters. Try going back a couple generations in shooters/racers/sports/fighters and you'll be in tears, screaming "Why is this so BAD?!"
People tout the Xperia PLAY is the absolute best option for emulation... but honestly, I'd rather play games that are either made specifically for the Xperia PLAY, or optimized to work with it.
Nothing wrong with old school... but on a general note, a lot of people need to differentiate between genuine goodness, and notice when nostalgia's blinding them from seeing when a game is a pre-mature aberration.
You've given it away: RPG's and adventures, the kind of games one actually may want to play again because they have a plot and can be rediscovered, are still unchallenged. The rest of genres have been either dumbed down where they're not a challenge anymore (Survival Horror games as the most conspicuous example, compare Resident Evil and Silent Hill with Resident Evil 5), or mainly figured out in terms of control, or both (FPS, compare the complex dungeons in Quake vs. the cutscene-laden FPS of today)... but not in the Xperia Play. Compare Battlefield 2 and Minecraft in terms of control and then roll a die to see if you cry, and if so, how hard.
Maybe Street Fighter 2 Turbo is unbalanced and has retarded physics, but people know most characters of its roster. The same cannot be said for games like Bruce Lee.
Maybe Final Fantasy 7 or 8 have ridiculous animations and they are childish to no end, but they say something to people, unlike Eternal Legacy.

lol, I agree with some things you've said, but let's be honest... it's a low blow (nearing straw man logical fallacy) to use Gameloft's incompetence to evaluate this generation of gaming - even if we're being specific enough to only consider the Xperia PLAY. Not to say you gotta be like me, but I at least used games that were prime at the time because it just make one's own point less respectable if all they can attack are weak opponents.
Gameloft has made some horrid controls (and even more horrid storylines), but the Xperia PLAY's game library has much more than Gameloft.
Dead Space; for example, not only created a standard of perfection for touch-pad controls, but it brought handheld dual-analog gaming to a reality it wouldn't have reached until the Vita was released next year... and with additional OS functions the Vita will likely NEVER have. Mainstream handhelds have consistently been weak with MMORPGs, Xperia PLAY's already got a handful of them... which work over 3G. What the Xperia PLAY's accomplished is very amazing when viewed from that standpoint.
The only thing that's come close to that was the Pandora, and it didn't do it near as well.
..and while Eternal Legacy's storyline hit mediocrity quite often (I'll admit, that forced kiss scene on the mountains almost made me rage) Eternal Legacy is not the cream of the crop. For example, get into Spectral Souls and you'll catch something that has a gameplay system easily able to take on Disgaea, and a storyline that truly develops into something substantial.
EDIT: BTW, i get a error when trying to view the image you posted.
YET ANOTHER EDIT: Even though I cited RPGs as the one genre that I can credit the old school for... removing the nostalgia glasses kinda takes them off the pedestal too. Newer RPGs have better overall design, less generic dungeon structure, characters with vastly better development, battle systems are more variant and allow more options/growth, conversations are more interesting, conversations are to a point in which you get involved input that will change the tide of things, storylines have much more impact, atmosphere actually has a passionate craft behind it... it's not just a "GRAFIX WHORE!" thing... games just improved over time, regardless of the genre.
Honestly, the only thing I really miss how "melodic" music used to be in games, as opposed to that wannabe-theatric bull**** they have now. And I'd even go as far as to admit that's a bias on my behalf too, since what I labeled as "wannabe-theatric bull****" actually has a far greater sense of orchestral composure behind it.
...luckily, KEMCO has been on a non-stop RPG churning spree for people just like me who want old-school-style RPGs on Android without them actually being the games I've already played ages ago.
It is not a strawman to compare successful games by successful companies. Whether we like it or not, Gameloft is the most successful videogame company of our days. Besides, EA hasn't published any RPG's on the Play (not that I'd mind snatching some Dragon Age goodness...) and the only offers are Gamevil's and Kemco's which appear to be made with RPGMaker.
The Xperia Play means undoubtedly a breakthrough, even if it's been mostly a commercial flop (let's assume it, it was marketed wrongly and it was too expensive at first). People pay cash for its games quite gladly, unlike most other Android handsets where people buy more ad-supported games or pirate them. It hosts some good games, and it's proven that touch screen gaming can not substitute for buttons and sticks.
However, it lacks device-sellers, or games which make a dent on the public. Right now it has a price where bundling it with a game could drive further sales, but it's really hard to find a device-seller like what FFVII did for the PSX. Spectral Souls is nice, but it didn't hit in the PSP where it came from, so it's hard to imagine it would do on the Play, particularly with its high price.
A game I'd LOVE to see ported is Battle for Wesnoth. It's a turn-based strategy game, probably the flagship of open-source games, and it has an iPhone port... but no Android one.

Gameloft certainly has been successful, but I don't know how much weight I'd put in that since their success relies on using low prices to dodge the flak they'd catch for so many poorly-tested low-quality releases. Comparing their 'kind' of success to something like Sonic the Hedgehog just isn't level to me.
When I said your comment was near being a straw-man, it's because we - the Xperia PLAY gamers - have already witnessed Gameloft incompetence, know they consistently screw things up... and we know not to expect much out of them. Why attack such an easy target? If you wanna make a point, it'd be much more effective to attack games of higher accomplishments.
I'll agree with the part about device sellers. Or at least half-agree... there's definitely games on Xperia PLAY that make it worth the purchase, but they aren't being marketed very well. Like you said, it's commercial success isn't quite where it should be...shame, because the Kristen Schaal ads were quite amazing (easily better than what Sony used for PS3/PSP) and they could've definitely pushed some units if they were aired in America. As far as I know though, Xperia PLAY only got a half-assed mention at a superbowl commercial a year back, and again in a back to school Verizon ad.
Another thing worth mentioning on that note is that things were also made quite a bit complicated when it comes to buying new Xperia PLAY games. Gameloft and EA's games, in particular, revolve around completely separate app stores and there's even some stuff that's inaccessible unless you're on the Rogers/Fido network. Not quite a big burden, but still one nonetheless.
Spectral Souls did flop on PSP, but it was also marred with issues that made it unplayable... issues that have been resolved in the Android version. At the same time though, that's still on it's reputation.

Hm? I could've sworn Battle for Wesnoth was on Android. Did you mean to say you wished there was an Xperia PLAY Optimzed version?
Yep... Wesnoth is definitely on Droid.

QFT. I found myself when we discovered PSXperia I emulated a few games, played them for a week, and then went back to the new games I had. I tried to play through Crash Bandicoot again and found it needlessly frustrating. And in the past I've emulated on my computer everything from old arcade games I played through Genesis games and more. Every time I found myself playing for a few hours and then forgetting about it.
Not sure if it was just because it was a different time, a different place, or our expectations have just been pushed so high its hard to go back down. I could echo everything you say about bugs, and hit detection etc.
I think the other thing is, we (or at least I), don't have the time to sit down and play for long cycles like many of these games require. The Xperia Emulator partially helps this with the built in save feature but still not all emulators have that. Much of my game playing on my Xplay these days is at around midnight for a half hour or so before I go to sleep (which makes Dead Space even more awesome).

Regarding Gameloft, I think I put up with a lot more with them for the fact I haven't paid more than a buck for any game of theirs that I own. If I paid $50 for their games I would have likely burned down their offices by now. That said if you look at some games from the past they were almost as buggy (especially PC games but at least those could be updated!) and we DID pay $50 for them and liked it. I still have sitting in a storage box a copy of Battlecruiser 3000AD, if you want to see a buggy game look that one up, it was actually unplayable out of the box!
The port was published in September. I didn't have news of it... At any rate, AWWWW YEAHHHHHH!!!
While I agree with some of what you and Rogue Leader are saying about certain games being out dated and whatnot, there were a ton of older games, especially renowned RPG's, that I missed in my youth. The fact that I get to finally play them **on my phone** whenever and wherever I want, AND with a game pad, is pretty astounding to me.
Yeah, some classic games show their age, but there are many gems out there that most the new games can't touch. Super mario series, Final fantasy series, Zelda series..the new games just lack the level designs, the perfect level of polish, and the emotion of these games. I dunno, maybe developers just tried harder then because these games originally sold for upwards of $70, rather than upwards of $7
However, one new game series has seemed to have captured the magic of the past, the Bit Trip series. I would kill to have Runner on my phone, but I know it will never happen.
I was curious to see what everyone has been playing currently. For me I have been playing Pokemon Emerald, Asphalt 6, and Dead Space.
Don't really have a favorite yet, but Castle of Shadows has been eating my time. That game is really damn fun! The creators actually did re-release it as Avenger without the requirement of constant online connection and with gameplay upgrades, but the new soundtrack just isn't charming enough for me (not acceptable for me, I'm a bit of a vgmusic enthusiast).
Also been really into Modern Combat 3. The campaign actually feels kinda intense, and I've been on this high all since I got online and found out just how awesome the physical controller advantage was.
If I had to pick a favorite though, it'd have to be Spectral Souls. That is an incredibly deep RPG to have on a phone. And since the PSP version is unplayable, this is its only *real* release.

hey TLR i was really dissapointed by the mc3 controls i thought from reading your review they would be like the nova 2 or rainbow six ones but unfortunately not tell me how you play online with these did u get used to em or do you have a special technique or mind powers or whutttt TLR!!
I've been playing Dead Space, Plants vs Zombies and Sonic CD.
I'm currently playing Galaxy on Fire 2 and 9mm
Dungeon Hunter II is my favorite even though
a)the stupidity of having the attack button (X) be the same button as skip cutscenes means I missed 3/4 of the storyline in the game after a frantic battle with a final boss baddie.
b) I can't play online because it won't let me enter my password (i try to go to the password box and type and it just adds the letters to the end of my username).
Since I beat it I'm currently playing NOVA 2, Sonic CD (2nd time around), Toki Tori, Galaxy On Fire 2 (prob my second favorite), Hot Pursuit (my like on off game, I play for a bit then I leave it alone for a while), and holding on Shadow Guardian waiting for Gameloft to fix the damn game so I can beat it finally.

There are plenty of good games, and there have also been multiple exclusives, just that they don't hold exclusives permanent on the Play, it just doesn't make financial sense. Currently FIFA 12 is exclusive, Dead Space was, as was Hot Pursuit, and others.
We are playing what other people play, but better, we can also play emulators, but better. If you don't like it, do us all a favor already and sell your phone and leave us alone.
Why do people nerd rage so much over exclusives anyway? Is it supposed to be some sort of my epeen is bigger than your statement to have an exclusive?
Modern Combat 3 - surprised I'm playing this since I already beat it on iPad 2.
Asphalt 6 - best racing game on Xperia Play
Where's My Water - First was Angry Birds, then was Cut the Rope, than THIS! Great game
Fifa 12 and star wars the old republic on the PC. To be honest i havent played a game on my play for over a month

Exactly lol. It's all about bragging rights.
I've been playing Experiment 13, Tecmo Super Bowl (old school NES version with 2011-12 rosters), Super KO Boxing 2, and the fresh Experiment 13.
I'd recommend that anyone play Experiment 13. It has a catchy tune, decent graphics, it's fun, and most importantly it's a free Xplay exclusive.

Also Star Ocean Second Story on FPse.
Hello there before my XZ I had a xperia play but because of its outdated hardware(still a great phone though) I needed a upgrade but gaming is a big factor on my phone and I couldn't find a gaming Thread for the xperia z and since android has so many awesome games and the z is capable of handling these very well I thought to make a dedicated gaming Thread!
If your like me and have a moga pocket/pro I will also mark compatible moga games also, and if you request I will upload my GKP files for gamekeyboard for touch only games that I have set up with my moga pro!
I would include games with ps3 controller support too but I don't have a ps3 (Xbox FTW) so if people are kind enough to inform me I will add this too =)
And please also tell me what games your playing and I will try and and include them aswell!
I'll start the list with my games!
Aftermath XHD (MOGA)
Fun little zombie shooter game with great gameplay
Asphalt 7 (Moga)
Runs great everyone knows this game
Looking forward to asphalt 8
Alien vs Predator (MOGA)
The classic films made into a android game and really well too can play this for hours and nice graphics too
Bounty hunter: Black dawn
Funky fun FPS nice graphics and fun gameplay and I love the music not played it that much yet but hoping for MOGA support soon! BUT trying to set up a gkp
The Bards Tale (MOGA)
Has me in stitches laughing a fun RPG with good gameplay and a beautiful game aswell (I downloaded the 3.5GB Hd version though)
Bladeslinger
Beautiful graphics but I find combat quite repetitive and slow looks good with some cool looking bosses items are a bit overpriced though
I do like the swipe to slice with your sword though!
Bounty Arms (HID?)
Absolutely beautiful graphics but that's about it really gameplay is abit meh, supposed to be HID support it wouldn't recognise my moga in HID mode though but others have reported it does work
Brootherhood of violence (MOGA)
Nice graphics not had much time to play it though!
Carmageddon
Retro graphics (to me anyway) Fun, violent and destructive! Will set up gkp asap
Call of duty: Black ops zombies
Some graphical glitches in menus on my XZ but in game runs fine screaming for controller support though! I have set up a gkp but it's not perfect will upload if requested
Conduit HDMOGA)
Appears as incompatible with the z but does work flawlessly download apk (it's free) then purchase full game through app (£3.21)
One of my favourite games atm nice graphics and gameplay and I like the storyline aswell
Crazy taxi (MOGA)
Great game from a great console and ported to android it a great fashion smooth as butter looks beautiful and is still as fun/crazy as I remember!
Dead trigger (MOGA)
If you don't have this game go get it now it's free! Nice graphics (on max) good gameplay (can get repetitive though) but loads of guns to get/upgrade and with some crazy guns aswell!
Drift mania 2 (MOGA)
If you don't have a MOGA controller I would skip this one, but there is a light version to try!
Ok graphics but what's more fun than drifting? - actually a lot
Dungeon hunter 4 (MOGA)
Another fremium gameloft game with nice graphics, a ok story line and hours of hacking and slashing. Does get better the better armour/weapons you have.
Epoch
Nice graphics unique(ish) gameplay and pretty nice graphics can get abit repetitive sometimes though.
Expandable rearmed (MOGA)
Never played it on the dreamcast and I don't know why! One of my (many) favourite games atm and playing with the MOGA makes it so much better!
Final Fantasy 3
The DS port not played it much (my girlfriend does though) and she loves it, very cute graphics
Gangster Vegas (4)
Good graphics, massive map, gameplay not too bad (but I'm waiting on controller support) some bugs as all new gameloft games but pretty solid game overall
Gangster Rio (3) (MOGA)
It's ok, graphics are ok, gameplay is pretty poor though I wouldn't recommend as there are better style games now
GTA 3 (MOGA)
^^ Nuff said. But plays great and still as good as it was back in the day
GTA Vice city (MOGA)
^^ again Nuff said, completed on my xperia play and again (on max graphics) on my xperia z
If you don't have this games you must get it!!
House of the dead overkill: Lost Reels
I love this game, my favourite touch screen game so far, tried to map with gamekeyboard to no avail, but still it's got nice graphics, good gameplay and I can play for hours and is very repayable. I highly recommend
Max Payne (MOGA)
Never played it on any other platforms so can't compare it to them but still love this game with my moga, a deep story line and can be very chilling at time (walking across blood level) Another highly recommended game
Modern combat 4 (MOGA)
Most people have heard or seen this but it's the best COD like game we have until MC5 (maybe not best FPS) campaign is quite short but it's all about online! (to me anyways)
NOVA 3 (MOGA)
Halo clone really and pretty good game made better by MOGA controller campaign is quite long but online isn't as good as MC4
Need for speed: Most wanted
Screaming out for controller support (it is xplay optimised) but ok racing game non the less, could have made it a lot better though (free roam) Nice graphics and sound
Order and chaos online
Again screaming for controller support, but great game I enjoy playing it (can be addictive) even if they do want you to but in game currency can be achieved without
Ravensword:shadowlands (MOGA)
Loove this game it's not a perfect RPG and is quite short and the storyline is abit meh, but you will still enjoy travelling the world and exploring the beautiful scenery and upgrading your character, it's the android skyrim until they (crescent moon games) release a sequel
Rayman Jungle run
Rayman! It's looks great on our 1080p display and is a great time killer
Real boxing (MOGA)
Beautiful graphics, pretty good gameplay, I like the career mode which is quite long 60ish fights. Multiplayer would be nice though--might just be me but I find it harder to dodge with the moga.
Real racing 3
Pretty boring (to me anyways) at first and without spending real money, but once you unlock the supercars becomes a lot more fun. Still a good racing simulator with nice graphics
-I have gkp for this aswell if you want it just ask=)
Resident evil 4
Got a English version of game from Internet, pretty good love the resident evil series so nice to play on my phone
Real football 13 (MOGA)
Nice graphics, gameplay pretty terrible though and no moga analogue support fifa 12 is better
Ricky charmichael's motocross
Love this game purely for the Multiplayer, really fun and competitive, good graphics
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes I know I overuse brackets (haha)
Sorry if I go on about the MOGA a lot too but I do love it...
Would like to hear others opinions about games listed too!
!!!! More games incoming!!!
Please suggest things to make it better improve the list and also tell me what games your playing!!!
Only a small amount of my games, I will constantly update list with new games and update reviews the more I play them.

When I saw that you came from the xperia Play,I had to contribute to this thread...I still love the phone and think its the most underrated device ever, especially now that nvidia came out with project shield which is the stupidest thing ever but thats off topic...
Anyways some of my current games:
Mini Motor Racing Xperia
-Great gameplay, easy but thats what I want from a mobile game.
Kingdom Rush
-Fun tower defense game, looks great in full hd and is just the right amount of challenging
Jetpack Joyride
-It was great on the xperia play, but still awesome on a 5'' screen
Slingshot Racing
-Its cool and all,but gets boring pretty quickly,I mostly play it with friends now
Shadowguneadzone
-Great competitive fps,I discovered that I have a talent for this game...play me some time
Super Stickman Golf 2
-Amazing Game,so addictive, and looks simple but great.
Spirit
-Looks trippy and can get you playing for hours
Voxel Rush
-Pretty simple, looks cool and you can always compete with your friends since is easy to pick up
Ready Steady Bang
-Dead Simple, download it and play it with a friend.
Crazy Taxi
-Playing this all the time,it feels nostalgic and I cant get tired of it after playing on countless systems all these years.
GelaTennis
-Kinda weird at the beginning, but once you get the hang of it,it can be a blast.
I got lots more, but these are my top several at the moment. It's 4 am,but if this takes of ill put play store links and all that pazzaz
I Refuse to play games that do not save your progress amongst devices. Its by far and away my biggest bugbear with android.
thus i'm stuck playing games like candy crush and temple run 2.
As soon as developers get off their fat lazy asses and start allowing cloud saves, then i will start parting with my hard earned cash and playing more involved and better games.
But until then, they can go do one. I ain't wasting my time and money on a game, only to have to start all over again on a different device.
if anyone knows if there is a a definitive list of android games that allows you to cloud save, please provide a link. thanks.

I Refuse to play games that do not save your progress amongst devices. Its by far and away my biggest bugbear with android.
thus i'm stuck playing games like candy crush and temple run 2.

Dead Trigger. I highly recommend it. It's a great time killer.

When I saw that you came from the xperia Play,I had to contribute to this thread...I still love the phone and think its the most underrated device ever, especially now that nvidia came out with project shield which is the stupidest thing ever but thats off topic.../QUOTE]
Thanks for your input! And yes xplay was underrated and Sony could of made it a lot better than it was, the amount of times I've had that conversation is too many haha
And I agree with you about project shield haha, and Yeh I hope this thread doesn't just fade away through the many threads, just thought it might be useful to some people

Doom 3 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein played with an Ipega or PS3 pad (depending on whether I'm at work or at home), plus just about every emulator going. Like you guys I upgraded from a PLAY but still use that a lot too.
Waiting for the next update for Project S.T.A.L.K.E.R; one of my favourite games on the PC being ported to Android.
Anyone figured out how to map hard keys to NFS Most Wanted? Still use my PLAY for this game as the touchscreen controls don't cut it for me.
Despicable me, Airport scanner, men in black 3, subway surfers are some really nice games

I'm pretty sure I downloaded it through Sony Select when the EA Games 90 Days for Free offer was on, though I can't see it listed now. The Google Play version is still incompatible with the Z, as you probably know.
The 90 days offer must have expired as I just paid another £5 to continue playing it on my Z...and still without joypad support (I must be mad).
You could try the method in this link, though I can't vouch for whether it works or not:

There is a version of NFS MW with Joypad support (HID) out there
But the bad news is that it's from the Samsung app store and so will need to find someone with a Samsung device and transfer it manually.
I managed to get a copy from my other half's galaxy s4 and works fine on my Z (I own the Google Play version but as not compatible and does not have pad support what's the point of using that one).
More info if want yourself - The version is v1.5.01 but was offered as a free exclusive offer on the Samsung app store (not sure if same version still on the market but you may be able to find elsewhere).
I belive this version was used also for Samsung to demo there new external controller but it works perfectly with any HID controller (Need to change to the controller option in the settings to activate it)
EDIT - Here's the version demoed at a show (Video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZyUOgT8RAM&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Just wish E.A would make controller support a mandatory option in all there games as seams them and Square Enix are the last big company developers to see that people want to play with other options then just touchscreen.
Hope by this helps

Yeah the build prop edit doesn't work anymore. You can download it and all, but it will crash:s
Reaper is the game that's been taking up my time! Amazing little RPG and it looks great! You guys should definitely play it when you get a chance if you haven't already!
