yes u read it right, the face unlock feature in xxjvu(2.3.6) is not from android 4.0.3 ice cream sandwich. its made by samsung themselves or samsung got that made from some other company.
the face unlock in ice cream sandwich is made by an australian company named pittpatt and that face recognition system basically is better when phones have better quality front facing camera as it recognises eyes, nose, mouth(lips), spects if u wear them, skin colour tone, face size, beard, moustasch.
while as far as i have noticed this facial recognition is not the one from ics as it basically takes pic of u and mainly recognises position of eyes and other features of face. this is better for low end front facing cameras and is basically not an asset for phones having great front facing cameras like samsung galaxy s 2.
so what is samsung upto here, creating there own facial recognition and using it in sgs3 instead of ics face unlock?? samsung is going really mysterious these days.
Thanks for the info!
The question is why they didn't released it before than ICS then!
Maybe in the Eclair days...

I tried the jvu face unlock and it worked pretty well and fast. but when i swivelled my chair in my room such that half my face was slightly dark (due to limited light, mainly from window), it could not recognise it. So I can't see it as being very practical (light isn't always perfect and from above/in front).

Ics face unlock has a feature for improving facial recognition after u once record ur face. It mainly asks u to re do procedure in different lighting conditions, with or without spects , with or without beard or moustasch. Thats better for high end front facing cameras. But This aint so bad as well.

This is obviously way faster than ics face unlock on my sgs . and I guess it will be faster on a sgs2. But ics one is more precise.
Doing this is harder and needs more work then releasing an aosp. Samsung won me again. With jvu everything is amazing. I can.play the mysterious dungeon defenders greatly here. Battery is great. Wifi always on. Sync too.

Can this be ported to other samsung devices. I found the correct lib and correct app. But what about recognition system files??
Face unlock sometimes works, sometimes doesn't work. Overall, pretty gimmicky but it'll be fun for a few days

"Samsung acts in mysterious ways"
face unlock
Before ICS face unlock feature, and JVU value pack, i have been using VISIDON face unlock application, which works well. It can be also be used to unlock any desired application.

Yea our phones have flaws like crappy file systems and a bad gps, but look at the bright side. Our phones cub run on 1.4ghz no problem without even showing signs of over heating. Not only that but w have the best display out there (better then most full hd displays) and we have huge amounts of developers for this phoney because it is 200% hackable. It even has download mode wich means we could restore with a click. Not only that but samsung phones are 100% developer friendly. Samsung was even nice enough not to lock our phones killer the droid phones. Respect what u guys have and appreciate it.

Samsung is great at hardware... But they should leave software updates to google.
I often forget how nice the screen looks, then I look at a friends phone and see how much it pales in comparison.
Yeah, I am with you that Sammy knows their hardware, but software could use some uppage. Wish my CPU could take 1.4. I've flashed a few OC kernels, it works for a while, but then hangs. Maiya... still an awsome phone.

I'm not sure if the shutter lag was Hardware or software in gingerbread, If it was software that caused the shutter lag then it will be zero shutter lag, if it was hardware I'm not sure.

When we get ICS (if SE stays to their word after being bought out by Sony), it should have the "Face-to-Unlock" feature. However that said, our front facing cameras are crap. You have to be in a rather bright environment, and even then it is grainy as hell. I wouldn't use it other than for giggles now and then. I'll stick to standard slide and pattern unlocks.
I'm not on the official OTA bc I'm on the NS4G, but am I the only person that can only get face lock to work 1/27th of the time? I have tried time after time to make better captures of my face and done the face lock improvement countless times, and I have no beard. I almost look retarded how still and perfect I sit with my phone at direct eye level with my face. Its really upsetting :\ I have tried multiple ROMs and the same result with all of them. I always get 'Sorry, don't recognize you' or 'Couldn't find a face' and it makes me wanna smash it, because this was my most anticipated and exciting feature of ICS. Any suggestions or is anyone in my boat?
Same here. Seems like the time taken for the camera to adjust to the light is too long for FaceUnlock to recognize a face. Sad really.
I have tried Face Unlock on Peter Alfonso's ROM and though not perfect it was surprisingly good. It would work 7 out of 10 times.

Try the app "visidon" its free off market and I was using it on gingerbread flawlessly way before ics came out.
Sent from my AOKP Nexus S 4G
I installed face unlock on my stock ICS and it only works from time to time. I think that if someone changed the recognition time (so that the camera has more time to adjust), it might work better. But then again, it sometimes fails to recognize me even in environments where light isn't a problem (i.e. outside).
I think that, with the Nexus S, face unlock is more of a hit & miss thing. Sometimes, for example it gets it right 18/20.
Works ok when
outside but inside good luck

+1 Visidon
Iv'e been using Visidon since before ICS and it works great.
Google was not including Face Unlock on the official releases of ICS for the Nexus S because the resolution of the front facing camera is not strong enough for Face Unlock to work satisfactorily in their eyes.
Having used it on a few different ROMs now, I'm tending to agree with them.
The stock ICS face unlock works fine for me. FYI, you have to make sure you take multiple training shots in different lighting conditions if you want it to be reliable.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
When I first installed Pete Alfonso's ROM from a full wipe, I had Face Unlock. Then when I restored apps and data from Titanium, it's gone. I also have the Screen Lock options for None and Slide grayed out with "Disabled by administrator, encryption policy, or credential storage". Any idea what app or setting would cause that?

LOL the recognition time I think may be what screws me. The time is soooo long already on here, much longer and my arm would lose circulation. It is hard for me to hold the phone in the exact same position for very long. And thank you to the rest of you, I will try Visidon.
I have searched alot on xda, android community, Google, and some other sites but have not seen anything about face unlock being ported to the evo. I have seen some post of it being questioned for the 3d but nothing on the 4g. so I was just wondering if y'all had any input, news, or even gossip about as I think the feature would be great.... but obviously don't have my hopes up as jaredthegreat just got to beata stage on his ics and deck is still in alpha. any comments are welcome

HERE
If I helped in anyway please hit the "THANKS" button below!
Considering the front camera is still not working on any ICS build that I know of for the Evo4G, I wouldn't think it would be talked about much as one would definitely be important for the other.
This doesn't seem like it would be all that secure. Does it distinguish between your real face or a picture of your face that can be placed in front of the camera?
It scans and maps features on your face.
And to the OP, until the front camera is working in any ICS rom, we wont have it. It cant be ported to a Gingerbread rom.

Facial recognition is nice, but really easy to bypass. Japan tried facial recognition in cigarette vending machines to determine age, and kids just ended up holding up pictures of older people to bypass. Still works on the ICS facelock. Until they incorporate multi angle unlocks, it will be too easy to bypass for my liking.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Facial recognition will never be truly secure until the photo sensors can map in 3d to differentiate between a 2d and 3d image or until they incorporate a laser scanner that scans the 3d texture of a face along with the photo recognition
We are legion, for we are many.
Well, if you could get the software to recognize a partial sweep (as in turning your head from left to right), then that would be a bit more secure. Or at least have it take 3 screen captures (3/4 right, dead on, and 3/4 left) then it would be a bit more difficult to bypass.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Yeah its still being worked on by the devs, but it is really nothing more then a party gab, I wouldn't use it, the new ics face unlock could be defeated by a picture, so it really isnt secure...but yeah
Anyone got it working?
I know it's there, cause when i look at the installed app list with anttek app manager it is shown on the list. but anyone got it working?
Dunno, maybe try ripping the xoom's settings.apk & running it on your tf... probably won't work, but u can try

This is one of the features why I was so excited for ICS, why did they break it out? :S
What on Earth does 'no flash' have to do with it ???? its the FRONT camera that gets used !!
I have Face Unlock on my Nexus but to be honest it stayed enabled a day or so as a novelty but is now an unused feature.
Face unlock will be available for Revolver
I've never seen a frontcam flash XD
But my Galaxy will probably get it soon
But my front doesn't work at all anymore? :S
The camera app presents a black screen, and when I try to click on something after thet, it crashes...

Front camera working for me .... did you flash via CWM ? and if so did you then flash the full ICS (minus recovery) OVER THE TOP ?
That seems to clear up a lot of small issues .....
It seems to be the only issue I have so far, everythign else works like a charm...
I just used the update feature in the tab itself...
Edit: The front cam does work when I switch to it in the Ustream app... so I guess it will work in Skype to... I never use it in the camera app anyway

no what i meant is that there arent many (any?) phones/tablets with a flash on the Front camera so its not an issue with the TF and face unlock ....
like i say though - face unlock on my Nexus is pretty much unused.
Faceunlock is one of the few new options in Android which is actually noticeable. ASUS sucks just like the others.

How many times have I said "phones has flash at front"? None. Face recognition in the dark works like a car with square wheels (hint: It just doesn't work).
