Just read the article on engadget. 50 for 5gb and 80 for 10gb. With 10$ over charges. Not sure if its all lte phones or only for the service though. Still sucks imo. I'll take sprints 10$ 4g charge any day.
Edit: Reading comprehension failure. Think this is not mobile lte data plans.
I just hope Sprint can keep up with coverage.. verizons will be the same as their 3g coverage in around 2 years..

Sprint's isn't even true 4g though. I feel like because they went with wimax they did get ahead of the game, but now that companies are coming out with true 4g they will be way behind because LTE covers MUCH more area. LTE towers reach farther then even 3g towers which crushes wimax. I hope sprint has a plan for this because I don't want to have to change phone plans again >.<

Uh, no one has true 4G. In order to get that, you have to wait for Wimax 2 and LTE-Advanced.
And "The WiMAX Forum expects to see WiMAX Release 2 available commercially in the 2011-2012 timeframe."
The LTE-Advanced standard won't even be ratified until 2011.
I thought Dan Hesse came out and said that Sprint was looking into bolstering the "4G" network with an LTE network. is this no longer the case?
Also, those verizon prices are beyond ridiculous. i very much hope that sprint doesn't move to a tiered plan.

They most likely will. If not, there is a lot of money to be lost there. It's becoming an industry standard.

He stated that he is fully committed to wimax. He did state earlier that he was thinking about testing out LTE alongside wimax.

Ill take sprint any day of the week as they are the only contender with a truely unlimited data plan.
I pay for tethering, im rooted and could get it for free, but pushing no-fine-print unlimited data is is a huge huge win in my book, not to mention that sprint hasn't screwed me over once since I switched from t-mobile (t-mobile screwed me over every chance they got), they did kinda sneak the $5 spending limit onto my account, but after a quick chat with a rep, they now give me $4.99 credit toward my bill every month.
Wimax is still rolling out in my area (I can get the signal, but its weak and slow), so I primarily use 3G. My second job is fixing computers/building computers/rooting android phones, I'm not always at home for this, and when I'm at a clients house/coffee shop with crap wifi (cough...cough...starbucks) its so freakin' nice to be able to tether and download all the drivers/updates/.zips/roms I need without worrying about going over my data limit. Sprints 3G might not be as fast as a regular internet connection, but sometimes its all I have access to, and its usually better that using Quest DSL through the $10 walmart-special router.
....I pushed nearly 70GB last month in 3G data, and 37GB in the last two weeks....not a single peep/complaint/charge from sprint.
I dont care how fast a network is, being able to do what I do with my phone makes my job much much easier and less of a headache, in my book unlimited data>network speed. Im eagerly awaiting the 4G rollout in my area, as it rivals my oversaturated comcast connection.
It also feels good knowing that, if sprint ever does decide to change their plans on data usage, I will be grandfathered into unlimited data for my stay. I also see this as being one of the last non-tiered data plans avalable (at least in the US anyway), if sprint ever does change, their wont be any more.....

Ima sprint cust but work for vzw those plans are for tge modems not phones no word yet on the premium data for phones
Little off topic I realize but with all the buzz... I'd like to see Sprint and T-Mobile merge and bang some heads in both the wired/wireless telco industries.
Hell..smack around the cable companies too. They got their day coming.
One day a majority of their subscribers will finally realize they can get same content or better on the web and start leaving in droves.

First of all, why would you want a sprint/t-mobile merger?? T-mobile has nothing that we don't. Secondly, what would sprint OR tmobile have to do with cable companies? wouldn't sites like hulu, vudu and boxee be better suited to "smack the cable companies" around? i believe most people are aware that they can get all their normal shows online. the cable box is just too convenient and familiar.

LTE does not necessarily reach further its the frequency that reaches further. Verizon is using a lower frequency which does travel further so its the spectrum that Verizon has not the technology. Also neither wimax nor LTE are true 4g. When a car has the radio up loud you hear the base first because base travels further because it is a lower frequency.

Your facts are correct but the car audio analogy is not. Lower frequencies do not travel faster. They just penetrate obstacles better. This means they penetrate building walls better for indoor coverage and they penetrate air better, going farther before the signal has degraded beyond usability.

4G also does not just mean speed. A true 4G network is an all IP network. Meaning no more circuit switched voice call transmission. Everything is packet switched. Calls are VOIP. A true 4G network allows VOIP calls to seamlessly be handed off to a wifi connection and back ect. All these carriers boasting 4G has degraded the significance of what a true 4G network is. And no one is there to blow the whistle on this false advertising.

Which conveniently is when my contract is up on my EVO.
I'll go to whoever has the best technology at the best price. I bought the iPhone 3G on release and then switched to the EVO after my contract. If someone has a better option in 2 years then I'll go with that.
Wimax is more than enough to get me through it.

If you want to be nickeled and dimed sure go ahead also they have data caps and are easy to exceed with these phones and they don't have a full unlimited plan and their customer service is worse than sprint. Also if you switched just cuz they had faster data your a bonehead cuz you could just use wifi at your house or almost anywhere you go if your really wanting faster data.

the table showing average download and upload speeds is pretty obscure. I rarely see anything below 4 Mbps in Atlanta.

everything is true except the customer service part. I used to work for verizon, only reason I switched was because of the "real" unlimited plan, and the phone itself. Other than that yes they do have a better data coverage (they always have I think), especially with their LTE service coming up so quickly. but I dont use data as much, maybe more on pandora than anything else. but if you need to be constantly connected for whatever reason, then switch to verizon.
You know what's stupid? So what? Who ****ing cares that its faster. What good is all that speed when your capped at 2gb. Sprint wins. Ill take a slower speed for unlimited data. Not to mention the speeds differ depending on area. Fastest I've gone is 900KB/s. My home connection gets 1300KB/s max. Also I've realized that these phones don't need all that speed. Its become so fast that the phone is the.bottleneck.
To be fair, its true but I'd rather have 3mb DL speed wimax (average speed i get now) at UNLIMITED than 5gb capped 12mb LTE.

Yup, i have 4g in downtown atlanta (obviously) pretty much everywhere I go and also out at my house out in lilburn area (northeast of atlanta). Also have it pretty much everywhere I go here. And like I said, I rarely see it below 4 Mbps, I consistently hit 5.5+ in my house
I'm on sero so im paying less for 2 lines than I would for one verizon line.. faster or not verizon can kiss my ass..

Yeah sprint is much cheaper and actually has a TRUE unlimited data plan... besides did you consider that they just released LTE so no one actually owns a 4g device to be pulling from the connection, unlike sprint who sold millions of Evos, some amount of epics, and and 4g network cards... Verizon will eventually slow down I'm sure
I've only used 4g once on my epic and its when I was passing through north carolina, and it was ridiculously fast.
No unlimited data = no business from me. Sprint already ensured my loyalty by my plan discounts but Verizon's LTE is going to be a fustercluck until they're forced to really compete for data dollars. And AT&Teabag is a joke when it comes to 4G right now as well. These tests aren't to be believed anyhow since they barely have anyone on their LTE network as it is. I live in a town with a lot of difficult zoning and get a minimum of 4 down and 1 up, sometimes much more, just about everywhere I go now. The only big tech advantage I see LTE having is better inside building reach and you will pay out your a-hole for that with Verizon.

I'm perfectly happy with my unlimited 4g data with speeds of 2-5kbps. Sprint Customer service has been great too, during my difficult times paying my bill while I'm currently laid off.

Actually its more because sprint is running wimax of 10mhz while verizon is 20mhz plus in a better frequency...that said even without wimax 2..if they just update to wimax-enhanced which is a minor upgrade..you would get 40% more efficiency (60% more for new towers) and speeds on par with Verizon's 20mhz LTE in only 10mhz spectrum....
Sprint has horrendous customer service, though I dont know if anyone else is any better.
Verizon has better coverage out in the boonies, when you need it most.
Unlimited data is Nice with Sprint, though you have to be a hacker to take advantage of it.

So as I spoke with a live chat representative I was focused on getting my answer,
does sprint throttle your data service. The answer is yes, in fact I was told that your
data service for the so called "unlimited" plan will actually STOP the data flow to your
phone rendering it usless except for calling. I'd like some more information on this
"unlimited" plan including if anyone has the fine print to point out that this is indefinatly
supposed to happen.

This is as dumb of a rumor as the one I posted about the update on 4/1. The rep you spoke to was just as stupid as the one I spoke to.
Well K0nane I do in fact have the problem on my phone as I was tethering while downloading a game off the internet and I encountered this. It was a test to see if there was throttling and as I can tell now my data is SLOW if not off.
Possibly it could of been the app failing.

If that was even remotely true it would've happened and Endgadget would be all over it talking Sprint down and selling iPhones I stream over 3G using Subsonic and can easily pull down 2GBs a week. I've never had any problems. The mobile broadband cards have a 5GB/month cap but that doesn't apply to phones.

So there was a 5GB cap but that is for broadband cards, so the representative did not answer my question after I was asked to rephrase it 3 different times.

When you say "downloading a game", I hope you dont mean through Steam. Watch your monthly data usage, if you abuse it, they will be on to you. If you consistently abuse the unlimited part that is.

Well when I first got my epic I kinda went crazy and started downloading torrents.. I probly hit like 40-50 gigs that month maybe more. I definitely noticed a BIG slowdown but only on 4g.. it was at the point where my 3g was faster for about a month before I dipped back below the threshhold, but only at home.. look up clears throttling practices. It has to do with how much data you download from specific towers within a certain period of time I think. But maybe it was sprints network taking a dump like he said.

Yes, you may hit problems on 4G, because Clear is known for being shady - but it's not Sprint who's in charge of that. They're not responsible, and it doesn't happen on 3G. It's also not a set limit.
yeah everything has a limit though you know.. I'm sure if I could download fast enough on 3g they'd throttle that too! lol.. but seriously 3g is so slow around here that I could never hit over 20 gigs even if I tethered it to my media/torrent server the whole month and went without a phone.

There is no cap or throttle at all on the Sprint network. Retard customer service representatives have no idea what they are talking about half the time.

+1 on clear throttling (11mbps when I signed up, 2 months later consistently .25mbps, yes 256kbps) along with their very shady cancellation and pre-billing prepaid accounts, but I digress before I rant...
On the Sprint side though, I have used quite a bit, as my home internet for a while (my justification, I had spent money on clear FOR home internet, their side throttles, sprint's side doesn't but it still taxes Clears towers I paid for) and used somewhere between 30-40GB and other than time of day inconsistencies, I NEVER saw any noticable throttling on 3g or 4g. Incidentally I had used Sprint's 3g before the epic between home ISPs and used around 14-18gb and never saw any kind of slowdown on 3g or 4g. YMMV
After watching this video I'm starting to wonder if sprint is intentionally slow.

My speeds depend on which tower I'm connected to. The one on the main road has good signal but crappy speeds, and the tower at work is 1-2 bars but steady 2 mbps. I also work in the boonies and there are probably only 5 people connected to it.

You could argue that all carriers are slow. It depends on the tower, prl, and etc, as well as how much you tweak your phone's radio-dependent files, but ruling out those factors, it truly does matter on your data plan. Most, if not all carriers cap your speeds when you're on unlimited plans, those who are on data limits are the ones who truly get no cap, although it doesn't matter because they have a limit, so its as if they're capped anyway.

Sprint claims they don't cap under any circumstances. I think the problem is that Sprint simply doesn't know how to maintain their network well enough to keep up with the demand.
I've whined about this endlessly but I'll give a little example of what I'm talking about. My wife and I drove back to our apartment in the city from upstate NY this morning. We had Spotify going the entire time and at no point did we have any skips or gaps in songs during playback. As soon as we got in our neighborhood, however, the song we were listening to cut began getting choppy before eventually cutting out completely. In the time it took us to find a parking spot - about 5 or so minutes - the song cut out for about 4:50 before coming back with a choppy signal. Sprint has told me a few dozen times that there's a problem with a tower in this neighborhood that somehow never gets fixed. Let's face it, if Sprint can't get their network working reliably in NYC, what does that say about their competence?
The problem is Sprint hasn't invested in their network or backhaul since they came out with data plans back in 2003-2004.

Now they are, unfortunately for us it's going to take a little to see the results.
The mere insinuation that Sprint would be slow [in some areas as slow at 50k] on purpose is...well... I'll be nice and say it isn't smart.
I think sprint is playing smart by saying unlimited data for ad but actually they can only serve very slow speeds everybody.
this in turn make me use less data because I rely on my wifi. A win win situation for the sprint but not for customers.

not sure if this is there intention per se but there's certainly some truth to it. I've got friends who have AT&T iPhones and they routinely go over 5 gigs of data in a month with streaming and whatnot. I've never cracked 600 megs with my Epic because the data speeds are too slow - why would I try to download several gigabytes of data when my downstream tops out a .30 Mbps? when I can get on 4G it's great but it usually knocks me off intermittently until I just give up and switch back to 3G.
I'm just waiting for tons of new iPhone users come in and swarm the Sprint severs and experience the true unlimited data with 10~500kbps speed.
I hope they form and do some kind of class action lawsuit so I can pitch in.
From a user who gets consistent 10~30 kbps in downtown.

I saw ~20 people in the Sprint store this weekend just for the Iphone.
So i guess it not just my crapy little town
If they tried to give full speed to everyone, we would all be taxing the bandwidth, creating a data traffic jam - no data for anyone. (this isn't necessarily an accurate description, I can't claim to know all - but the concept is sound)
The bandwidth is inherently shared, so they have to make sure that everyone gets enough to consider it more than useless.
There is no such thing as truly unlimited bandwidth... Anyone remember when cable internet first came out? It was fast as hell, until prices came down and a few of my neighbors got on board

Good idea - sue them for all they're worth. Then they go bankrupt, and we're all left with Verizon, AT&T or T mobile (or crappy prepaid, which typically piggy backs on the major carrier's networks...)

What's the point of unlimited data when I just rely on my wifi.
In this rate, I can take 200mb option from ATT. Because I cant use that much in sprint.

Get a T-Mobile vibrant then unlock it and put in an att sim card. Tell att you want the $15 unlimited data plan for quick messaging phones and give them your imei. If they ask what your phone is tell them it's just an old samsung tmobile phone and mention nothing about android or the real name of the phone, Enjoy.

I'm sure everything you are saying is true. The problem is that Sprint claims they don't limit bandwidth or throttle at all. And it's the line of bulls--t from Sprint that angers me more than their pathetically slow service. That they can't just come forward and speak the truth rather than trying to lure customers in with false promises is a deceptive business practice.
It should be class action for all not just iPhone ppl on sprint.

In about a month I am leaving Sprint due to their terrible terrible horrendous data speeds in south Louisiana. I also have lot's of doubt and trust in their huge Network upgrade and I don't feel like waiting a year more. I'm getting Verizon and the Galaxy Nexus. If you experience similar frustration with Sprint feel free to vent and post speed test results etc. Does anybody know any way to get out of contract without an ETF?
haha, i live in baton rouge and i dont like sprint either. i was thinking of switching to Verizon when my contract ends since they have 4g lte in baton rouge.
Yes their 3G speeds suck but having true unlimited is important to me since I stream a lot of music/video so that makes up for it.

No. Will be waiting for their network upgrade. Sprint is the only network which allows a true nexus with wallet. I don't need to be forced with some apps which apparently can not be removed unless you root it.

If you're on a family plan and receiving employee discount pricing they're raising the price next month giving you a chance to get out without ETF as its a breach of the ToS.

I have been contemplating leaving sprint also. They may have truly unlimited data but in reality you dont use much data via sprint network as it takes forever to load anything in Baton Rouge. O and guess what, the data unlimited plan is not truly unlimited. The will cut off your service if you use over 5 gb (may be less) of data on 3g. It is only the use of 4g which is truly unlimited.
They have been saying Baton Rouge would have 4g since the evo came out and yet still nothing. The sad part is Hammond has 4g and the population is not even 1/8th of Baton Rouge's pop. I doubt BR will ever get 4g.
As far as getting out ETF free, good luck with that. I have tried every way possible with no luck. But what I have not done, which would definitely work, is stream as much youtube and download huge files as much as possible or force your phone into roaming on data and calls for consecutive months

No... They are unlimited on anything, how many times do people have to say this. 5gig cap is for hotspot and connection cards

It's not the price they're raising but the amount you save from your employer discount is going to be a lot less. So it's definitely going to cost you more. They've been doing a lot of things that have been making people want to switch. They charge for "premium" data, completely stopped expanding 4g, scrapped the annual upgrade, killed the premier status, and now this? They're making it really hard for anyone to want to stick around...

not once in my 8 years with sprint have i ever had an issue with going over 5gb which i always do, nor have i ever heard anyone say it happened to them unless they were roaming more then using sprint
3G here in new Orleans has been terrible since 08 but there family plans just beats anyone. And I'm constantly around wifi so its not as bad.

Anything is "a lot less" when people are just looking for an excuse to cancel. The highest discount will be losing $5.40 a month, but those are rare, most people will go down just a few cents to a dollar a month.
I actually like what they've been doing and the direction they're headed, it is putting a stop to all these people talking advantage of what they have to offer. Where I live, my 3G gets over 2Mbps and 4G gets 10 so my unlimited data works great

4g is in the Best Buy area of Hammond. It doesnt show up on sprints map for some odd reason. if you dont believe me go to the area and try it out
If you want out, roam like a mofo. You have to roam a certain percentage in order for them to boot you.

I dont use tethering on my phone because I have wifi around most the places I go not to mention the data speeds in baton rouge are slower than dial-up, so tethering woudn't be much use. It was one of those months I was downloading a bunch of different roms though.
Sorry to burst your bubble but not all sprint customers are bad customers. I had them send me a letter a time before that to tell me I was using too many roaming minutes the previous months and when I checked my bill for the prior months I only had about 30 or 40 minutes roaming for all the months. I called them and they were at a loss for words
