Ok guys, whats next for us, anyone have any hard facts about what HTC is going to replace our lovely Touch HDs with? still have quite a while left on my contract but im curious whats around the corner....
Agreed... I was thinking about HTC HERO but I dont think I can live with a screen that small
Guys,
Has anyone noticed that since the Blackstone, HTC has not made any phones with a screen that is as big as the Touch HD? (3.8 inches). I've only seen 3.6 inches so far. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Cheers.
You are correct 3.6" max: in my opinion we must wait early 2010 to see other device like HD

Really looking forward to the HTC Thoth.....with the current on screen keyboard....I would'nt mind leaving the physical keyboard at home.....provided they launch it soon.....but kinda looking forward to one of their devices using the new Nvidia chips as well....
Yup, i'd only really be interested in one of the new Nvidia chipset devices as a replacement.
.. And an AMOLED display .. bloomin daylight :-(
the size on the HD is just perfect, ive tried some smaller ones since and its just not the same, i can see me using this thing until its fallen to bits unless a HD2 with a similar design comes out, its a perfect iPhone compeditor we just need a bit more grunt, OLEDS would be very cool, but i think we would have to drop the stylus, the metal wires in the screen reduce the brightness by a huge amount and im not sure how OLEDs compare with backlit LCD
Having had a Touch HD and Touch Pro2 I know why they don't make such a large screen anymore.
Using the TouchPro2's screen requires minimal 'touchdown' all around the screen - its consistent, whereas the Touch HD (I've had three of these) all exhibit the same issue - The middle of the screen requires less effort to register a screen press than the outer sides - making it inconsistent. I'm assuming this is due to the larger screen size the touch element of the phone has to cover....
Don't get me wrong - I loved my Touch HD but after the usual HTC and qualcomm marlaky of missing hardware drivers I'm pretty peeved off and have now deflect to the iphone 3GS. Yes its no-where near as technically superior as the Touch HD - but the screen and hardware acceleration make it very fluid to use.
Signed up to a 24month contract with the 3GS as I doubt very much HTC will be releasing anything decent (i.e. With a decent graphics chipset) for a while yet......
Agreed with the above posts..
Having OLED would be pretty cool... and maybe a capacitive touch screen-- however I doubt this as it wouldn't be compatible with handwriting recognition. Maybe better technology will overcome this someday as for now I can only dream... :/
zoomee,
I'll have to agree. The edges are not as responsive as the center. This is especially apparent in things like the X button on the top right.
Cheers.

ah well, so no one has any news on anything to replace the Touch HD with. Pitty, they are losing out on market share to Apple. Unless that is they already figure the market is lost to them...
Hi!!!
just though id share with you...
I just called HTC europe to enquire about getting my cracked screen repaired-
£150 is their "general cost" it could be more or less, depending on severity, they told me.
and that it could take a minimum of 2 weeks, with pickup and delivery included as long as it's in warranty...
Then i asked about the screen type it would be replaced with, in light of the recent news that there is an AMOLED shortage...
and they told me that SLCD will be the standard replacement screen from now on!!!!
yay!!!!
Darren
I wonder if there will be a flood of cracked screens now ..........
Would like to see a direct comparison here before I crack mine ..........
LOL
i hope not, otherwise they'll run out of SLCD too.... and then what.....
iphone-like retina displays.... OOOoooo
here it is: comparisons
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY6qpnoziZM&feature=player_embedded
But they wouldn't replace our screen with AMOLED anyways... the shortage has no effect on our screens.
I doubt 4.3" slcds are being made
If this is true , that would be amazing SLCD on HD2 very very nice
Yay, if what you're saying is true, maybe no more multi touch issues.

First, the HD2 never had an AMOLED screen, so, shortage in amoled screens?Strange!
in any case, too bad i can't benefit from this given that my property insurance would replace my phone right away and not bother with the screen =)
expensive
A little too expensive for me to want to crack my screen
I know this is going to sound absurd, but would it be possible to for instance, buy a 4.3 inch (S)AMOLED screen and swap it with the DHD one?

It would certainly be possible, and possible to get it working.
However, it wouldn't be easy, or practical, so i wouldn't recommend it

changing the screen is one thing but the screens driver board would be different (unless its built into phone screens ?) not to mention the screen itself would probably require a different driver to run the display hence my point
you will have an amoled in a dhd but its unlikely that it will work unless you have the knowledge to do it all, but considering your asking the question im going to assume you dont
Haha I don't have the knowledge and it was just a thought, but maybe the pros at XDA can. As they say, nothing is impossible and Android is extremely open.
The software is open, hardware hacking is often somewhat more involved.
As i said its possible, but requires a huge amount of effort and skill, as pointed out by noobdeagle.
For all practical purposes it isnt possible, but given enough time, skill and equipment you could certainly do it, then again, thats true of nearly anything....
*goes off to build hoverboard*
Ok, sorry to bring a dead thread from the grave, but I just thought. If it were to be an (S)AMOLED, or SLCD etc, couldn't the drivers be gotten from ROMS from say the Galaxy S or another phone with that screen?

Yeah, even Samsung themselves would like to have 4.3 inch.
The only reason(I believe) DHD didn't came with AMOLED or SAMOLED is because it'll be 2012 when it's possible for Samsung to make 4.3 inch OLED screens.
I'm sure Samsung can manufacture them considering they're showing off prototypes of the worlds thinnest screen and thats transparent and measuring in at 5" i think it was Just a question of whether they want to or not :s
Amoled cant be found in the size of 4.3inch thats why HTC had to go with S-LCD Super amoled can only be found in the size of 4Inch
The DHD has an S-LCD? Is there anyway to check that?

I have, it appears it does. But the keyword "desire" is littered with normal Desire threads.
I have read S-LCD everywhere on Google

Not true, Samsung have been making 19" AMOLED's since May 2010.
The Desire HD has a SLCD because of the AMOLED shortages that happened in Q4 of 2010.
As for replacing the screen, the motherboard would prevent you from changing the screen due to compatibility issues. Along side that there would be issues with the connector used to connect to the motherboard since HTC follow no hardware standards for there internal hardware.

Fair enough and the most intelligent answer yet. But, you say shortages, I remember the shortages a while ago but what about the new Nokia they're amoled and so are some others
Sent using my two thumbs.
The AMOLED shortages caused Samsung to charge an increased price for AMOLEDs, people think this was to make AMOLED more unique to the Galaxy range of phones but nobody knows 100%.
The "Nokia AMOLED" thing I have no idea about, Nokia have no gain in the SLCD Market or the AMOLED market that I know of but I do know they only recently dropped the nHD screens in there phones though. Maybe they brought them while the phone was in production earlier in the year?
In my opinion half the reason for HTC choosing SLCD for the Desire Z/HD was because of them having AMOLED and SLCD Desires and nobody bringing a worthy mention to the matter.
Fair enough. Guess we'll see what Samsung have next. They developed amoled 2 I think which rivals the iPhone retina display.

hi everyone, im planning to get the htc trophy but there is one small thing holding me back- i want to know whether the trophy's screen is slcd or lcd. Some review sites are claiming that its slcd, some normal lcd whilst others say that it depends on the different batches pocketnow.com/windows-phone/htc-7-trophy-slower-than-omnia-7-showing-screen-problems it would be great if anyone could tell me whether it is slcd or normal lcd based on viewing angles. i am planning to buy from vodafone AU so if any in australia has one, i would be particularly grateful if they could tell me what type of screen type it is
Unless you can see it for yourself there's no way to be sure.
It should come with SLCD. I'd say 95% chance.
The difference is indeed quit striking. Not only colours when viewing from an angle but even more the contrast/grey levels.
Mine is SLCD. I love it. And a friend's Trophy is. In fact all Trophy's I have seen but one had SLCD. The LCD one was one of the very first Trophy's.
Is it true that the display of Mozart have more vibrant colors than the display of Trophy and it looks then better than the Trophy one?
Thanx.
I'm considering purchasing a Dell Venue Pro for AT&T. At $300, it seems like a pretty good deal, even if the new ones are coming out soon.
My question, does it have a PenTile screen? That would definitely be a deal-killer.
No, it has full RGB amoled screen. Not super-amoled.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
The Venue Pro does have a PenTile (also known as Bayermatrix) Screen, its not the standard Matrix like a LCD would have.
Its a standard Samsung amoled, no super or super+
You certainly notice it on very bright colors, but its not as bad as i expected (its my first amoled phone)
Hmm. Two replies with conflicting answers and no answers by looking at specs. Anyone else? If it has PenTile, there is ZERO chance I will buy it. I had a Nexus One and I hated that screen.
It is PenTile, visible with the naked eye.
So far as I know, all Samsung AMOLED screens were PenTile until Super AMOLED Plus (as seen in SGS2). The tech was just not there to deliver a true RGB matrix for a reasonable price.
Damn. Oh well, saved myself $300. There is no way I will buy another PenTile screen.
Thanks for the help!
What's wrong with a PenTile screen?
I absolutely love the screen on the DVP. It's the best screen on any phone I've ever had. I hate super amoled and super amoled plus, I like my whites to be white. Not yellow.
I bought a Dell Venue Pro a few weeks ago and can tell you that the screen really is good. Colors are really ok and although the screen size is rather large, you will not be able to see any disadvantages due to the PenTile screen. I suggest if you are interested in buying one, then simply go to a shop and take a look at the screen for yourself and you will see that it is really good.
I compared it to quite a lot phones (such as LG Optimus P990, Palm Pre, Samsung Galaxy i9000 / i9100) and can say that the screen is far better than all the usual LCD screens and has no visable disadvantage compared to Super Amoled (Plus).
I do not believe the DVP is sold in any shops near me. The Microsoft Store had it when they first opened in November, but not anymore. I didn't get a great look at the screen back then, though. I was mainly looking at the hardware and it looked very nice.
I can't buy another PenTile screen, though. I can notice the crappy image that PenTile causes, especially to text. It was very noticeable on my Nexus One screen, the DVP has an even larger screen with the same resolution, making it more noticeable.
