HD2 Screen Replacements will be SLCD! - HD2 General

Hi!!!
just though id share with you...
I just called HTC europe to enquire about getting my cracked screen repaired-
£150 is their "general cost" it could be more or less, depending on severity, they told me.
and that it could take a minimum of 2 weeks, with pickup and delivery included as long as it's in warranty...
Then i asked about the screen type it would be replaced with, in light of the recent news that there is an AMOLED shortage...
and they told me that SLCD will be the standard replacement screen from now on!!!!
yay!!!!
Darren

I wonder if there will be a flood of cracked screens now ..........
Would like to see a direct comparison here before I crack mine ..........

LOL
i hope not, otherwise they'll run out of SLCD too.... and then what.....
iphone-like retina displays.... OOOoooo

here it is: comparisons
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY6qpnoziZM&feature=player_embedded

But they wouldn't replace our screen with AMOLED anyways... the shortage has no effect on our screens.

I doubt 4.3" slcds are being made

If this is true , that would be amazing SLCD on HD2 very very nice

Yay, if what you're saying is true, maybe no more multi touch issues.

First, the HD2 never had an AMOLED screen, so, shortage in amoled screens?Strange!

in any case, too bad i can't benefit from this given that my property insurance would replace my phone right away and not bother with the screen =)

expensive
A little too expensive for me to want to crack my screen

AMOLED vs LCD?

So apparently the "Samsung AMOLED" screens are being phased out because they cannot keep up with demand and they are replacing it with the "Sony Super TFT LCD" screen. I just ordered my incredible today and should get it in about a month
Am I getting ripped off with this other screen or is it still worth it? The only review I saw said the LCD is usually better in the sun, but worse on the battery. Not sure if resolution and clarity are the same. Probably won't get a good answer until the LCD Incs are out.
HTC isnt going to take a chance on the phone being less than "Incredible". You're not going to notice a difference unless you have another Incredible on hand to compare it to. Think of it as driving your own car, you'll never know that your buddies car is better than yours (stock) because it came with goodyear tires instead of michelins (or vice versa). The fact is that you're going to love the phone and you're going to love it even more when you can fully root and mod it to your hearts content. The whole screen "thing" is overblown media hype. I have a Droid and a dInc and to be honest the screens are beautiful on both and while the dInc has sharper, crisper colors unless I hold them side by side I always find myself toying with my wife's Droid because I love the battery life more.
Just remember to fully charge your dInc for four hours PRIOR to activating your phone or powering it on. So you can have 16 hours of use time (standby/talk mixed) as I was charging my phone three times a day for a little while.
They should just replace it with the Super AMOLED Display. I would rebuy an incredible for that.

+1 good sir
if the new sony display is superior to the current samsung amoled one, HTC should let us send ours back to have it replaced either for free as part of the warranty or a small fee for the replacement, I would definately have mine replaced if I was given the option. ( assuming that the new sony display is better of course) I love the colors on the amoled screen but hate not being able to see the display in sunlight unless I turn the backlight all the way up.
from my understanding the shortage on AMOLED displays is bc samsung is being greedy with them for their own phones. doubt they will give the better screens to HTC if this is true.
assuming htc can fix the underlying problems with the amoled version (grounding, charging, etc), you might want to hold on to your version very tightly.

Absolutely not. There are using the lesser Sony screens because they cant get the Samsung AMOLED screens fast enough, NOT because the Sony ones are better.

I kindly disagree - if I can see Sony's display in sunlight, then it is superior even is some crispness is lost.

I take my Incredible and its AMOLED screen with me on 4-wheeler rides 3-4 times a week and I can see the screen perfectly fine in direct sunlight. Is it as bright and visible as my Motorola Droid was? NO, but still very much usable.
Then combine that with the fact that the majority of my usage is indoors, as I would guess is the average users, then AMOLED is the clear winner. IMO
Different strokes for different folks.
I will take the AMOLED FTW since I use it indoors 95% of the time. It really is hard to make out in direct sunlight but I deal with it since it is so beautiful indoors.
Agree, amoled is amazing looking indoors, but either way I would still take this phone with or with out it.

boot into bootloader and look at the build date, chances are you got an early build with the amoled screen, I am not even sure they started shipping the new ones yet, but I could be wrong. also if you bring it outside in bright sunlight and it gets hard to see then it is amoled. lcd is pretty easy to see in bright sunlight.

RUMOUR, samsung isn't producing waves and galaxy s phones anymore?

Just read a tweet from Eldar murtazin, who is generally well informed, and today he wrote sonething very disturbing.
Samsung seems to have stopped the production on the wave and the galaxy s due to super amoled screen shortage.
This is nothing short of a disaster for all of us hoping to see the galaxy s being supported with froyo and beyond i guess. (or even cyanogenmod for that matter...)
I really hope this is just a temporarely thing, just as with the droid incedible....what do you guys think?
cant produce the phone when there is no screens for it... so ofc they will once they have a stock
In this case, sell the phone. No big deal.
Sent from my GT-I9000M
this is their best selling phone, and the only real competition againts iphone
i doubt they will stop producing it completely
it'll just be on hold until they get more stock of SAMOLED
they did the same to HTC Desire
but instead of waiting for new stock HTC decided to use another type of screen
as soon as HTC did the change the Desire suddently became less desirable
@allgamer
I hope you are right about that but this would explain why you cant find any SGS here in Edmonton or in Canada at all from what I understand which sucks if you brick and need replacement, etc.
Also, do you think that this issue will delay the FROYO release to those of us who already have the phone?
according to Eldar, they sold their last batch of SAMOLED screens to Apple, who is making a product for next year with our screens in it!
now, i really hate Apple!
they see that retina alone isn't enough, so close the deal with Sammy!
i hope this won't kill Samsungs ambitions to become the biggest brand above Nokia!
yes, they are mostly back ordered even in Toronto as well, the sales are good, it's like iphone always sold out.
froyo has nothing to do with the factory side
froyo will come when the coders are done fixing the bugs and get things working properly
Don't worry about it too much.. Apple has product shortages all the time. More screens will be made. Really, don't worry about it too much..
"ANYMORE" is not the word! Why make such confusion?
Its a break in production due to shortage of SAMOLED screens.

You actually believe that? Apple does it deliberately to make the product more desirable, simple as. They like to see people queueing up 12 hours before a product is launched outside of their shops, good publicity etc.
As the the Super AMOLED rumour, it is just that, a rumour, like most things I see written on the internet. Isn't it samsung who actually produce these screens? And there is a shortage? I dont buy it...
Then again though, I wouldnt trust samdung as far as I could throw them.
That would explain shortage of SGS in Poland.... Especially with one carrier that has best prices for it.... I'm searching this phone for about 1,5 months...
by the way, this can't be true anyways
else the new launch this month on Rogers network will fail completely if that was true

They will probably switch to the sony slcd screens
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
then it'll be a waste, it'll go the way the Desire did, and it will cease to be a Galaxy S
it'll probably be released as a new model Galaxy sub S

Have you seen a desire with the SLCD screen? I prefer them to the AMOLED ones, they are a genuine 480x800 resolution and look sharper, and the colours are not much different IMO. Apparently they are worse on battery power though, despite the claims to the contrary...

AMOLED or SAMOLED? The AMOLED (like the Nexus One) are pretty disappointing in the long run, SAMOLED (like the Galaxy S) hasn't disappointed me even after a few months of owning it.
Isn't the real "strength" of the SAMOLED screen the contrast ratios and the inky blacks...? Will SLCD ever be able to match that because of the back or side lighting needed to actually illuminate the screen?
It's probably just a shortage, they couldn't keep up with HTC's demand for it, and they probably can;t keep up with their own...maybe they didn't truly believe the SGS would be such a success
Logicalstep
I was told from the importers/Saturn that Samsung Galaxy S were empty and Samsung are going to make more Samsung Galaxy S. They told me that people were crazy for Samsung Galaxy S and that's why the stock were empty.
the news and my phone store sources confirms the same, the SGS just sells really really good.
the 16 GB model is always the hardest to get, i did post a topic about it a while back
8 GB models are easier to find, but who would want less?
same reason why 8 GB are easier to find than the 16 GB models
now of course, for Cellphone carriers models those sizes are locked, you don't really get to chose
only the unlocked models you can choose to buy in 8 or 16

"Samsung's Super AMOLED is a variant of AMOLED technology in which the layer which detects touch is integrated into the touchscreen display rather than being overlaid on top. This results in a thinner device and improved outdoor performance."
LCD tech will never be able to match AMOLED blacks, but there's still the "issue" with PenTile RGBR matrix. Red font on black for instance? Looks horrible. Text in general is its achilles heel. Video, images (well, not B&W perhaps ) and graphics looks amazing though.

Venue pro..

i was on dell (US) website to check the venue pro, but to my surprise, dell has almost all the other WP7 device BUT THE VENUE PRO is not one of them...
i wanted to get one for my self, IN malaysia singapore sales and marketing ppl have no clue what i am talking about.. so i wonder if the support will be as good as the info on this device..
i am leaning to the HD7 90% now..

I have an HD7 in my hands right now and I still think the DVP is a better buy. If you can, try to hold out a little longer. Pink camera, loose volume button and kickstand, washed out old generation LCD. Fake speakers up front (only has the one speaker in the back.)
I will say the HD recording isn't too shabby and it's nice to have a led charge and missed call notification.
I agree with the above. I just returned my HD7 to get the Venue Pro. It was hard to do as I loved Windows Phone 7, the AMOLED, Gorilla Glass and keyboard all make it a better buy.
Have to say I'm not sure on the AMOLED. While it looks fantastic at first, the more I have a play with the samsung (in store - I don't own one), the less convinced I am. It has real pop, no doubt, but the colours actually are too fake and saturated for me long term. But then I'm pretty fussy about colour reproduction - colours that are too saturated tire the eye very quickly and give a false impression.
So while the AMOLED screens undoubtedly give the phones a wow factor when you first see them, living day to day, I'm leaning more back towards LCD now. The wife has the HD7, and having played with it a lot, it's a great screen - calmer and more realistic.
On the keyboard I'm with you - I always like to at least have the option of a hardware keyboard. On gorilla glass I couldn't comment as I've not seen it in action - don't know how well it handle bright light and reflection.

I owned a Nexus One for about 8 months and this HD7 for a week now. I think it's going to be personal preference for most people. I can't stand how washed out the HD7 looks, but AMOLED is def over saturated, though.
When I try to think back and remember if the N1's screen ever gave me any issues, I honestly can't remember a time where I was like screw AMOLED this sucks.

It is about choice. One is not superior over the other. They both have their pros and cons. after having AMOLED OR (S)AMOLED everything LCD or S-LCD will appear washed out. That's because you have been.looking at an overly saturated screen all this time.
The colors are more.natural on LCD. The text is smoother because there is no Pentile Matrix to deal with. On brighter backgrounds the LCD is better on battery life.
It all goes back to choice.

NEXUS S - SLCD from carphonewarehouse

Just picked up a new nexus s (new years eve) from carphonewarehouse in brighton and it has an SLCD. Is this common in uk as i thought it was just happening in russia etc..????
I have an AMOLED Desire so i can see a massive difference and about to return it. Any benefit in SLCD???
Wring section but I don't know any.pros over super amoled.

Really? Damn that sucks. The screen is probably my favorite thing about this phone.
SLCD? What a ripoff. Why aren't they using Super Amoled???
Yeh a little peeved as the demo one I tested was AMOLED but the one in the box wasnt. Grrrr
super amolded = the best, period.

Look at it.
The major difference is when looking at the image with black background.
As SAMOLED has unlimited contrast, black is totally black.
only the russian nexus s models have slcd. can't find the link to the article, but I remember reading about this.
edit : here's the article http://androidcommunity.com/nexus-s...d-in-russia-instead-of-super-amoled-20101207/
OMG!!!!!!!! noooooooo, i hate it when the manufacture process changes half way through the release of a product (example HTC Desire)
i'm glad our batch in USA has SAMOLED.... but what will happen after if we need to send in our for repair? are we going to lose the SAMOLED to be replaced with a Sony LCD ? like they did with the Desire?
ewww....
i think i'd rather go back to a Tmobile Vibrant if that ever happens
Well slcd has it benefits. First you get regular RGB pixels instead of ugly Pentile. Second LCD's are not prone to "burn in" and shioter life of amoled. There are toms of threads about samoled burn in and rapid dimness.

hahaha. i cant believe this. what a total f*** up.
It couldn't be. My friend just purchase one for me in carphonewarehouse. If it is slcd, I'd rather her return it. Confirm?

the only reason i purchased this phone and SGS was to get the SAMOLED screen
if it was not for it, there are tons of better choices for an Android phone
there is simply nothing else better that can compare to the crispy clear quality of the SAMOLED
and most importantly it works under bright sunlight

You think so?
They can't write Super AMOLED on the specs and sell a LCD, can you add some pictures of the screen?
I'd be surprised if you have a slcd screen! When the phone is off does your screen have a dark blue(ish) tinge to it? It does look different from a simple amoled screen, did some one tell you from carphone warehouse that it was scld?
This is very unlikely, surely?
As someone has said, the SAMOLED screen is one of the major selling points. If it didn't have it, I'd probably stick with my Desire HD!
It's almost like swapping in a 600mhz CPU and selling it.
Are you sure it is SLCD?
Do we have a really solid way to check this?
Probably by using image with different shades of black? Then turn the contrast to max or something.
Post comparison photo with your HTC Desire please ...

PenTile screen?

I'm considering purchasing a Dell Venue Pro for AT&T. At $300, it seems like a pretty good deal, even if the new ones are coming out soon.
My question, does it have a PenTile screen? That would definitely be a deal-killer.
No, it has full RGB amoled screen. Not super-amoled.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
The Venue Pro does have a PenTile (also known as Bayermatrix) Screen, its not the standard Matrix like a LCD would have.
Its a standard Samsung amoled, no super or super+
You certainly notice it on very bright colors, but its not as bad as i expected (its my first amoled phone)
Hmm. Two replies with conflicting answers and no answers by looking at specs. Anyone else? If it has PenTile, there is ZERO chance I will buy it. I had a Nexus One and I hated that screen.
It is PenTile, visible with the naked eye.
So far as I know, all Samsung AMOLED screens were PenTile until Super AMOLED Plus (as seen in SGS2). The tech was just not there to deliver a true RGB matrix for a reasonable price.
Damn. Oh well, saved myself $300. There is no way I will buy another PenTile screen.
Thanks for the help!
What's wrong with a PenTile screen?
I absolutely love the screen on the DVP. It's the best screen on any phone I've ever had. I hate super amoled and super amoled plus, I like my whites to be white. Not yellow.
I bought a Dell Venue Pro a few weeks ago and can tell you that the screen really is good. Colors are really ok and although the screen size is rather large, you will not be able to see any disadvantages due to the PenTile screen. I suggest if you are interested in buying one, then simply go to a shop and take a look at the screen for yourself and you will see that it is really good.
I compared it to quite a lot phones (such as LG Optimus P990, Palm Pre, Samsung Galaxy i9000 / i9100) and can say that the screen is far better than all the usual LCD screens and has no visable disadvantage compared to Super Amoled (Plus).
I do not believe the DVP is sold in any shops near me. The Microsoft Store had it when they first opened in November, but not anymore. I didn't get a great look at the screen back then, though. I was mainly looking at the hardware and it looked very nice.
I can't buy another PenTile screen, though. I can notice the crappy image that PenTile causes, especially to text. It was very noticeable on my Nexus One screen, the DVP has an even larger screen with the same resolution, making it more noticeable.
