Hey Everyone,
I haven't seen anything on the Epic forums about this yet... so here is my piece.
I got the Amazon app store the other day, and I'm pretty impressed. The most impressive feature, to me, isn't the free app a day... it is the fact that it remembers your purchases/downloads. I've wiped my phone yesterday to start from scratch, and as soon as I reinstalled the Amazon App Store, it asked me if I wanted to view my purchased apps. I clicked each one, they downloaded and installed.
The part I don't get, is why can't the Android Market do the same thing? You are required to put in a user/pass (just like amazon app store)... so what prevents them from at least remembering what apps you've downloaded and provide the links to re-download them? I've used Titanium Backup to back up and restore, but I'm not convinced that it doesn't create problems (phone runs much smoother and with less problems when I don't use Titanium Backup to restore).
I know this was long, and you've probably lost interest already... but if anyone has any info or knowledge on the subject, please chime in!
That is all.
Actually my nexus one does auto restore from android market, so it might be a feature in gingerbread.

The market does remember your purchese apps. When I had the moment then switched to the epic all the apps I bought came up on this phone when I loged in on to my gmail acc

Ok, maybe I need to clarify a bit...
I haven't "purchased" any apps from the Android Market or the Amazon App Store. I've downloaded numerous free apps.
I would imagine paid apps get re-linked... but what about the free apps you've purchased?
I've been playing around with ROMS... so after every wipe, I go in to the market... and nothing is there.
If this is a feature in Gingerbread, it will be awesome. I would never worry or hesitate to wipe my phone if I had an issue. It isn't downloading the apps that bother me, it's searching for each one individually.
For some reason the epic doesnt have the back up data thing that aosp phones do.
When you sign in, it automatically redownloads and installs everyapp you had installed.
Also, on market.android.com you can see everything youve downloaded and install it by hand.
I agree that its stupid the epic is missing that feature. My hero running cm6 has it

DK28 had the app restore feature, not sure why it was removed since.

Wow, never knew about this. So if I wipe my phone, I can log into market.android.com and it will redownload all of my apps for me? As nice as it would be to have it all on the device, logging in to the website isn't bad at all!
A lot of the reviews of the Amazon Appstore never seem to mention what I personally think is a killer feature: sorting and filtering.
At any step of the way, you can choose to only view 3+/4+/5+ star apps, among other options. As soon as I heard about the new store, before it even came out, I had high hopes for sorting, knowing it's one of the great features of Amazon.com.
Google tends to shun sorting/filtering in favor of typed search queries. You can see this in the almost religious devotion to search in gmail, where sorting by anything but date is impossible without using a third party client--and this limitation is vehemently defended by Gmail supporters.
In this regard, I think Amazon will remain on top. I just don't see Google backpeddling on this philosophy, and the Android Market will remain dominated by algorithms and search queries.

A little off topic but Sense 2.0 ROMS do that also. I've been running Myn's and Mik's Desire Z ports on my Evo and whenever you log back in with your Gmail account all of your apps, paid and free, automatically start downloading to the phone. Pretty neat feature.
Yep, got a Wifi Xoom today, and sure enough about 90% of my installed apps came over...all of my purchased apps are available for redownload.
Same thing happened when I switched from HeroC to Epic.
This re-download was a new feature of 2.2, and you have to have 2.2 and be going to 2.2+ to restore.
Noob here! I hope I didn't post this in the wrong section. I'm wondering who of the pros could build me a custom rom for some htc devices (aria, thunderbolt, and maybe inspire) or if you have one that may be fitting for my needs. I'm sure I could learn how and do it with a kitchen[I made a few for WM devices before]. Or perhaps someone would be willing to walk me through learning how-{I know nothing about programming though}. Right now the Aria is most important as I haven't rooted my Tbolt yet. I find there are lot of roms out there I could try but I need something very stable (I'm giving this Aria to a kid and dont want to have to fix it for him all the time). I don't have the time to follow all this dev stuff and feel like learnig it myself will be a little overwelming...PM me if you feel like
For the Aria...
Im OK with Sense but like to use ADW launcher
Strip out all bloatware including Facebook, Friend Stream, Mobi TV,IM, Mobile Banking, Peep, Where, YPMobile, Weather, Stocks, Utube, Talk, News, All AT&T stuff
Remove Internet App
Remove Gmail & Mail App
Android 2.2 or higher would be cool but not nessiccary
Kill the Market
Ad Google Voice
If you know of a good firewall that can block data except for certain apps (like Voice)
Edit: Swype would be nice too!
Basically He's a kid and I don't want him to have access to all the [email protected] out there That even the cheap stripped AT&T phones have so I chose an Android so i can customize it.
I have a better suggestion, if it's a kid who shall use a smartphone, either change the phone type or go to Wi-Fi Wireless settings in Android and set 3G and Wi-Fi off. A kid isn't smart enought to start the wi-fi and if he does, make sure your wi-fi is password protected (encrypted). Because you can make sure the phone can't access the internet without 2G/3G - Wi-Fi disabled.
Smarter solution then bricking the phone ^^,
If the aria is rooted just uninstall all those apk.

Yeah but why? If he uninstall Market, how will he get it back? Suppose he could find something like Market.Apk or download it from a update or recovery(?).
Sounds meaningless to go throught that much trouble just to make sure your kid can't access the internet.
Sounds like he needs a butt naked Cm7 or MIUI..........or a flip phone lol
Just install CyanogenMod without the google apps that should cover most of it

I'm not sure if this applies to the aria or not, but on my phone (verizon fascinate), there is a file named pppd_runner in /system/bin/ that, when removed, "breaks" data. Wifi will still work (not sure how to break that though), but he will not be able to receive MMS messages.
You need to be rooted to remove this file, and if you want to restore data on his phone you can simply restore the file. I suggest you backup the file somewhere safe and then remove it.
As for the internet-related apps, you could always remove the .apk files from the phone using titanium backup, root explorer, etc.

How old is the kid?
Do as you're told and install a CyanogenMod 7 (clean), chance that you brick your phone is there but if you do it perfectly it's nothing to worry about.
Errr Get titanium backup and unistall what you dont want !
I have a theory that Ti Backup or any backing up of apps to save re-installing time when changing to a new ROM is a bad plan. I know you can do it no problem, and that it is a great time saver, but I have a strong feeling that this ultimately results in an unstable phone with mysterious force closes etc.
Even though it's a real pain, I think you are always better off reinstalling your apps from scratch after changing to a new ROM and wiping caches.
what say you?

I'm no expert, but I agree with you. I have love TiBa, but I haven't ever batch restored all my apps/data at once. I've used it very selectively and never had a problem. I also use it for some of the other options it has... like detaching apps from "my apps" in the Market, for instance. But overall, yes, I think you're right, and it seems like common sense. For me, the point of using TiBa to create complete backups is simply to know that I have them, just in case... this is just my experience, of course...
I use my backup root... Works quite well, but i do not restore any apps which need superuser or something like that. You can handle the force close by fixing permission after restoring apps... But yeah a fresh install seems to be better

I make backups of apps with Ti but only use it reinstall selected app data if necessary.
Made the noob mistake of restoring system data once but live and learn.

Reinstalling your apps + data is not the problem. it's reinstalling system data that is the culprit. part of going into a new rom is that the system is set up differently. It is fine if you just restore the apps if they're all functioning normally.
You actually can also filter your batch operations so that you can install specific files and also have it back those files up on a schedule (daily/weekly/monthly/cyclic/etc).
TLDR: reinstalling apps + data is not bad. Reinstalling system data is bad.

Obviously, restoring system data across ROMs is just plain wrong, but even restoring user app/data can be problematic. Just recently I read a post from a user who was regularly restoring user apps/data after ROM updates... the person started experiencing minor glitches with their device, performed a factory reset, re flashed, reinstalled everything from scratch, and the issues resolved themselves... I can't count the times I've read posts like this. Of course, these same users got along just fine for a time before the problems developed, so I agree with you when you said restoring user apps/data is "not bad." But over time, it might not be good either.

Calling it a theory would imply that you are going to present some evidence supporting it, which you have not. No evidence, its just a hypothesis.
Well obviously by copying data back and forth regularly you increase the potential for corruption etc to occur, whatever the cause. Is that not just a given? But unless you're doing it an unnecessary amount of times I shouldn't think you would run into noticeable trouble.
I always sucessfully batch restore my apps and app data (with Titanium Backup Pro) after a format of system and never have run into any issues.

I have been doing this since the old winmo days and have not had a single problem with it. There's a reason you do multiple copies which makes life a little easier.
I personally have not had any problems over the past 4 years of using titanium across winmo to android. So I disagree with the OP's theory. Backing up app/data wont make it go bad over time. It's not a consumable so it doesn't matter how many times you back it up or over how many years you do. if you keep your app updated and you back it up, it wont go bad over time.

As I said, I've never had an issue using it selectively, but I was hesitant to rely on it too heavily. I need to bear in mind that for every user who reports a problem, there are usually many more that get along just fine. Thanks for the input.

Zero problems here..in fact it has fixed problems for me in the past I love TB
the point is that backed up apps and data don't just go bad over time. There's a reason why you make multiple back ups.
At the end of the day, fresh > backup
Unless you have important or critical data, then backup>fresh. I have clients cry because they didn't have a backup at home or on their phone...just saying, grown men and women crying because they never thought about spending some cash for peace of mind. My backups on my phone and home network have come in handy multiple times! Backups to me are indispensible...
I use mybackup pro.

On the other hand its fun just to back up the apks of stuff you like on your cpu, so you can make a new phone experience when you make a big change--say by using a dif combo of apps/themes.

I find TiBu to be a lifesaver when I'm playing around with custom ROM's. That combined with Apex Launcher's backup abilities makes it so that I can basically switch ROM's and restore my apps and home screen to the same appearance I had before.
Please post any must have paid apps and also what you will be doing with your gift card.

Saving it until I need it. I usually use it to support devs for apps I use that I haven't already bought/donated to.
If you want you can buy a premium key for Titanium Backup as it'll be usefull for you in case you want to move from one device to another!
I've already bought all the premiums for the apps I use. I guess I'll sell it on ebay and make my tax back from the 6p.

I know titanium has been around forever but Is it safe to restore from one rom to the other... Will it cause issues with the system? If they are different. I always read do not restore data from titanium. I have always started fresh when romming. Even though its such a pain... I think I'll purchase some games that I probably wouldn't have purchased otherwise. And see what other apps people come up with

It's safe because you're not restoring a ROM, you're restoring individual apps.
It's always been recommended not to restore the data for those individual apps, though

Are you 100% sure? When you go to check out from the "Google Store" (not app section) one of the drop down "Pay With" options is Google Play Balance. Unless the 50 bucks doesn't go into that same bucket of money, I am not sure how they would be able to tell what is my deposited money and their credit money.
