I know its kinda weird but I was just wondering does anyone else like "watching" the dev's work, I like going to the custom rom thread and reading the post for fun even tho I hardly know what they're talking about O_O
i often find myself doing the same ... mainly looking for a post saying Custom Roms now possible.
I do the exact same thing

I do the same, I just wish all the people who did watch the tread, only watched and stop asking Devs silly questions.

spent about an hour last night reading trhough most of it lol
I like to follow it as well. Did some basic linux scripting so I know some of the commands here and there but it's all beyond me. Still fun to read though
I read it all the time, I actually have a shortcut directly to the dev section on my X10 and watch it once in a while for updates... To be honest, this phone is keeping me quite entertained (As opposed to my iphone 4 which I got tired of within 2 days)
I read it regularly. I'll be honest and admit I don't understand everything they're talking about (I'd like try and help if I did), but it still makes for an interesting read and keeps my hopes of success up.
Although (or rather because) i used one of the most user-friendly linux distribution (Unbuntu) for some time, i don't have a clue about linux at all. in the beginning i didn't understand a thing, but just reading the thread regularly lets me understand a little bit about what they're talking. A VEERY little bit...
Developes thread is one of the best places to just read and see how they work. Specially when there is a dscussion about new findngs.

Hey guys can someone translate the so far progress on the cynogen mod and stuff thanks?
Also your not the only one, I keep a eye on those threads but don;t fully understand what they mean
very first thing i do when i visit XDA is go right there to dev thread and read ... even though i dont understand a bit ..
Lol, its nice to know I'm not the only one. Its also nice to know that most of are waiting patiently for a custom rom while others moan.

I think that the devs are trying to:
(In order of 'best' approach?)
-Create (or complete) an autobootable bootloader to allow us to run custom roms.
-Run another firmware on top of the current one (but a certain file, (build.prop?) has to remain in place (one of SE's checks, i think). At the moment, the devs seem to be fixing problems one by one, and at the moment the phone doesn't reboot anymore, but there are still some other problems.

Hello Everyone,
If you have not read there was a post made by vbhines wanting to start a group named QAM which is a development group completely for the android community (specifically the samsung captivate for the moment). This means no more flaming, no more trolling, no more blaming other people for stealing, no more fighting!
"We are a community for the community."
My plans for this group is to help improve the experience of any phone that we develop for. We will help out anyone that is in need meaning that if an app or a kernel or anything that will help improve the experience of android on our phones we may or may not make that specific item that is requested or wanted etc.
Since we are a community for a community everything we will be releasing will be open source so whatever way we choose (more then likely on github) to release the source of our work you will be able to get it. Our documentation will be the best possible.
We will always be looking for more contributors to this group/cause. It doesn't matter what you can do it only matters if you help out and don't ruin the work flow . Developers will always be in need as well as UI/Graphic Designers. People that will help out with documentation would be fantastic so that we will always be well organised. We would like this group to be as diverse as possible.
We want to be a much more mature development group so our releases will be well tested so updates come less often which means your experience will be much better since you do not have to flash so often.
We already have quite a good backing by some new up and coming developers who have quite a nice background and we are hoping for more backing by the rest of the community.
I will be updating this more and more because there are more things to come.

Alright guys the site is up and running I just need to setup categories for the forum and we should be good to go! Everything should be done by today depending on how fast I finish up homework etc. I am hoping it will be done though.
We will start a lot more development this weekend. Since I wont have anything to do plus I have 2 weeks off.
The plans for this weekend is to setup a hierarchy and actually establish developers etc.

I'm going to hop over to irc tomorrow. I'm best on the debugging end, but not yet in apk modding minus the lg launcher below. I've got to crash this evening, but ill be around tomorrow eve.
(Did also try and help xcal with alittle on his kernel and the headset issue, but he ended up cracking it himself... him and I went back and forth with pms for weeks....)
I would love to help however I can. I have some Java and C experience (not a whole lot, i can debug) and extensive web design experience. Let me know.
Hello All,
This post is mainly for developers and is meant to just be kind of a "brain tickler". I think it would be kind of interesting if any ROM, app or mod developers (or android devs in any capacity) to try and provide us the community with a quick and dirty (or longer if you have massive amounts of time, which I'm guessing you don't ) explanation of how you got into Android Development. If you have some coding background already, or if you were already fluent in most linux config files and such, or what I think would be somewhat interesting is someone with none of the above who just runs ubuntu in a vmware for the sole purpose of programming android, and they've never touched code before.
So Devs, tell us your stories. I feel it might help to "humanize" what developers are and help some people who may be afraid to give it a try building their own stuff if we see the wide range of Devs.

Well let me be the first.
I started rooting phones with my evo. I didn't do know developing untill done time has passed with my epic. You cam say I was a noob when I joined xda. I didn't join xda untill after I got my epic. I had no experience with linux. I'm basically learning as I go along. I have a background in web design. Mostly html and xml and a little bit of java script but all on web design.
I started developing on the epic cause I seen to themes I liked and mixed them together to make one. Androdena and baked snack. This started my quest to make the perfect theme in my eyes. I seen things both themes left things un touched and didn't complete the look. So I started digging in deeper. It was at this time I started getting help from others but for the most part I'm 80% self taught in the short time I've been doing it. Now I'm teaching the people that taught me the last 20%.
As my theme progressed different mods started coming out and I wanted to add them to my theme. That's when I started learning how to edit .jars and writing/editing smali code.
I'm now at the point I'm working on my own mods and porting others. I've been working with k0nan with the SRF rom and reading as much info as I can as I wanna start making my own kernels and roms.
I did all this and I've only been a member if xda for a little over 7months.

Alright I'll share my story. I started developing a few years ago on WM6.5.xxx. I did that for a little while and then moved to BlackBerry. I made the switch to Android last summer. I settled on the Epic and began tinkering. I started out by reverse engineering ROM zips. I started adding to or taking away from and it just kinda grew form there.
I started customizing my ROM's before flashing them and got pretty comfortable doing that. Eventually I worked up the nerve to start sharing the customized ROM's. Over time I was able to do more and more on my own. Making simple scripts or modifying more complex ones and putting ROMs together on my own. My midNIGHT ROM got it's name from the time of day it was I usually worked on it. My life is pretty complicated so the only time I really got to work on this stuff was around midnight. The name just kinda stuck.
I got some good feedback. One day it occurred to me that I could use an Android ROM to help spread Autism Awareness. Most of you know my story if you don't and are interested you can read my blog. People seem to really like the ROM and as more people used it the more I was able to help spread awareness. I have all of you to thank for that. Now I see Autism Awareness ribbons around the forum. I hope to continue to learn from the AMAZING developers here and maybe even some new ones. I want to say thanks to all of you for your support and thanks to all the developers for helping me learn by freely sharing their knowledge.
I would really like to learn how to tear into a kernel, or mess w/ the bluetooth stack hahaha
Have no idea where to start, so i keep poking around
Maybe some day i'll be able to develop roms too
Although i have no clue about programming this stories make me want to take a class
I do see that making a rom is a crazy amount of work but i wanna say some day i gave back to the xda community

Hey everyone I would like to know the best way to start learning android. To start off I know that Java is heavily used and so is XML. XML is usually the theming part and Java is for Rom building if I'm correct. I'd like to know how to go about learning it and which path to take first. Do I buy books? Do I follow guides online? Do I look up youtube videos? Also do I have to be smart to learn Java or XML. I am no genius but I consider myself pretty smart if I use repetition and keep pushing myself to learn which I am fully capable of doing. If someone could tell me on how to go about learning Android Development that would be great.
Thanks,

You do need to know some linux because some of the rom has to be done in a linux os.

Try to create and deploy the "Hello Android" app described here:
(I can't post external links until I have 8 posts here, sorry:
developer.android.com/guide/tutorials/hello-world.html )
I did it under Windows XP using eclipse, and deployed it to the emulator running on my PC and to my unrooted stock DroidX (Android 2.2) as my first Android project.
Knowledge of XML is always a good thing, but not required in that tutorial.
Once you have a basic app working and deployable, you can modify it to try more advanced things.

there is a vast amount of information out there. where woukd you send someone with little to no kniwledge of linux to learn the basics? i read and read posts, but often i am behind the curve on the basics so i cant understand all of the posts.
last question. if i run ubuntu on my computer will i be learning the same basic stuff for both ubuntu and android, as far as development goes? commands and logic? so far xda has been by far the best source of information. been reading the android developer page. its interesting.

I always wanted to share this as some people call themselves developers in this forum by just removing and adding some apps and making roms "look faster". What they is actually going into the app called spare parts and choose the fast transition and fast windows animations. So why not trying these settings on cm7 and see which is faster people? Or any other rom developed by true developers!! I am not saying im against rom development but at least if u are trying to develop then do something unique and not a rom that even my grandma could do
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App (cm7)
I agree mostly... the vast majority of roms available for us right now are just themed CM7. that's fine and dandy, but it's particularly amusing to me when people talk smack about CM7 being "slow" or "buggy" etc and then claim their new rom of choice, a CM7 variant, is the best thing since sliced bread.
that said, even theming can be a hell of a task, and extremely time consuming. I appreciate all of the work the development community provides to us (free of charge, mind you).
I don't see what you are trying to get at here. For a start I have tried just about every rom there is and I don't believe I have ever come across one that has window tansitions set to fast by default. We have a really good mix of devs here doing different things and do great work. You need to remember that devs build a rom that they like, quite often it is built for them and they choose to release it to the general public.
One of the great things about this community is choice. A rom that one person loves and another will hate, its all about personal preference.
Do you know anything about developing a rom? I don't but I knw a lot of work goes in to them and the devs do a lot more than change some settings on spare parts to make there rom different, better and faster than the next rom.
Your post in insulting to the devs that work really hard to give us something cool and awesome.

I think this thread really exemplifies a major issue in the dev community: The lack of drive for a unified stable product whose basic functions all work properly across a cross section of devices.
Theaming is all well and good, but if MMS doesn't work and you have force crashes on multiple internal apps; what exactly is it all good for? If I can't boot up gps, then what the heck does it matter? If internal components and tweaks are confusing and ill thought out, then why the heck are they being shared?
I really think that the dev community needs to sit down across multiple devices & hash these issues out.

Thought I was the only one too but did not want to be rude or sound ungrateful. I do appreciate every quote on quote devs work and passion for making us roms. But some of these are just stock with the equivelant of removing bloat with titanium backup. No system tweaks. Nothing really even changed. if anything they should just be called bloatless roms or something.
On another note, while I do get annoyed that a lot of stuff is just cyanogen with a slick of paint on it, obviously the work it takes to build a rom from the ground up is not easy. Otherwise we would see a lot more of them. I do understand that and do not take lightly how hard it probably is. Maybe the answer is let's port some roms from other phones? Like insertcoin for example? Or maybe all the devs that are just repackaging stuff get together and form something along the lines of what the bionix team does and all work together to make one super good rom.
I LOVE the choices we have with this phone. Its f-in awesome. But sometimes I feel like its just a placebo with really one 3 to 4 actual unique roms for our g2. I do not know how to make roms, so I'm not acting like this can be done overnight. But some of this just seems like common sense no matter what angle your coming from.
Obviously rmk is a rom god. And suilmagic seems like an up and comer. Pershoots kick ass. I thought for a minute there was many a rumor that eugene was heading our way, which if true would probably cause a dam near astronomical shift in this forum, hope there is some truth to that rumor. Those are devs that stand out to me, if I didn't say your name I just didn't think of you when I was writing this.
Thank you for indulging my two cents. I do not mean to offend anyone whatsoever. I appreciate everything you guys do for us. But let's not sugarcoat the reality of our situation.

what enrages me the most is the absence of detailed information on what exactly is done to the rom - goes against the community spirit.
I would like to research the changes myself and make sure there's nothing that can damage my phone.
actually, from my point of view, the worst thing is when someone does not give deserved credit - "Grab, use and forget"

I agree that is extremely annoying. And then you ask what is it in it or whats different from other roms and you get a "INSTALL IT STUPID AND FIND OUT"....YA WELL UP YOURS TOO
even decompiling a rom and making minor changes like adding/removing apks and tweaking existing settings takes hours of work. theming is even more time consuming. I don't think most people realize this. the work itself isn't "hard," but the amount of time you have to set aside to be able to do this kind of stuff is extremely tough to come by, at least for me.
in that respect, you should all be grateful for the time ALL devs and chefs, regardless of the substance of their contributions, devote to giving us new stuff to play with.

Make that two. I don't really see a reason to get all aggro over something that is free. As to something that "might damage my phone".... um.. what? To my knowledge, the devs (or whatever some may wish to call them) are not into the practice of putting out toxic software for us to download. To make sure, I use this goofy thing called judgement. I'll look at a new ROM, read the dev comments, wait a while, read the feedback comments, and make a decision. Not complicated. If there are a ton of bugs and problems, I'll wait until later versions come out that correct these issues. Or I'll choose another ROM. I honestly don't see the point of complaining about free services and a plethora of options. If people don't like all that, unroot and stay with stock software.

No, I'm with you too. While I don't know zip about development, I can appreciate the fact that it takes time and effort to create and upload a ROM, even one that is just a tweaked version of someone else's work.
While the OP seems to be complaining about one or a few people in particular, it seems that many people who post ROMs are doing it for the sheer enjoyment, or to create something unique for themselves. Then, they go out of their way to upload and post it on here for others to enjoy. Of course, giving credit when its due, and describing what has been changed (and what hasn't), as previously suggested, are all good points as well.
Its not like there is a whole lot of fortune and glory associated with calling yourself a "developer". If somebody is even calling themselves that, its probably due to lack of a better term, more than anything else. Its a bit cumbersome to go around calling yourself "Guy who modified a ROM for myself, and now posting it for others to enjoy".
Besides, if you don't like a person's ROMs, just don't use them or read his threads. Not enough ROMs tends to be the more common complaint, rather than too many (although obviously quality is a factor as well, not just quantity).
If you really wanna ***** about free services then don't use them, switch phones, go to a different dev community. People do this work for fun, they don't ask for money for the hours of work they put in. You should be appreciative for whatever ROMs we get ,especially if you don't "dev" yourself.
