Hi Guys,
I'm about to buy a Motorola Atrix 4G sim-unlocked phone here in India, through eBay. I got confirmation from the seller that it is an imported phone from US which has been unlocked for international carriers. I've a few questions now:
1. Does GB 2.3.4 come with an unlocked bootloader, so that I need not do anything to unlock it myself?
2. If no, then will I be able to unlock the bootloader using the method given in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423
I can see that there is a lot of community support for this phone and I would love to root it and install custom ROMs on it. Please clarify me on the above points.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Karthik,
I have also bought through Ebay.
1. Does GB 2.3.4 come with an unlocked bootloader, so that I need not do anything to unlock it myself?
A) If the phone is sim unlocked than most probably it has unlocked bootloaded. You can check this by restarting the phone, if UNLOCKED is displayed at the top during booting, then its bootloaded has been unlocked.
2. If no, then will I be able to unlock the bootloader using the method given in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423
A)I have used the same method for unlocking my phone.

Thanks for the reply. I do not see the UNLOCKED text while booting up. so probably the boot loader is still locked.
In the thread which you used to unlock, there is no step to root the phone after unlocking the boot loader. After unlocking, the next step is installing a custom recovery. So how do we root it? I don't want to explore multiple threads as the instructions are confusing. Please help!
Thanks in advance.

This is NOT TRUE..
Sim Unlock and Bootloader Unlock are different.
Bootloader Unlock will allow you to install any other firmwares. This will display Unlocked message on bootup.
SIM unlock will allow to use other carriers SIM card other than Orginal carrier.
For Ex. if you have ATT US Atrix, you wont be able to use it for other networks until you perform SIM unlock. This will not display Unlock message on bootup.

N00b questions
Few more n00b questions Please ignore my questions above. I've consolidated all of them below so that multiple replies can be avoided.
I've rooted and installed custom ROMs on my LG P500 for more than a year now and I'm quite familiar with the process. But this locked boot loader thing is really confusing me and there are so many threads with different methods. Really confused I've listed down all my questions below, pls help me:
1. Can I root my Atrix without unlocking the bootlaoder? I want to get rid of the so many AT&T apps as my phone is sim-unlocked and I don't need them here in India. This page from rootzwiki has a method to root a phone with locked bootloader. Can I follow this?
2. The same page has a method to unlock the bootloader. In that, it is mentioned that the SBF flashing need not be done if the phone runs gingerbread. The steps direct us to run the unlock command if we're on GB. But on all the methods here in XDA, the SBF flash method is mentioned even for GB 2.3.4 phones. This thread for example. which one to follow?
3. I'm planning to follow the above thread, but in that thread, there is no step to root the phone, after unlocking the bootloader. The next step given there is to install custom recovery. So what do I do to root it?
Please clarify these questions. Thanks in advance.

sorry for a bit of a thread hijack,
I'm going to be in India for a conference, can anyone recommend a prepay provider that works with AT&T Atrix and has reasonable data packs? Don't care about text/minutes, just need mobile data with decent speed & price. Bonus if it comes with a pony?

1.Rooting a phone is different to unlocking the bootloader. So yes when you root the boot loader will remain locked. Unless you use a script which automatically roots and also unlocks the boot loader.
2.I would follow the example thread
3. You can use this thread to root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255548
I would recommend you read this thread…its for beginners but has all the information you'll need

Atrix 4g Unlocking and Upgrading.
Hi there guys!
I am planning to buy Atrix 4g through Ebay.
The listing on ebay says that the phone is unlocked?
I am pretty much new to all this and all that I wanna know how do I get rid of Motoblur without putting any custom roms.
PS I heard that Moto has released gingerbread but I am afraid if I update with Motorola Software Update, it will re lock the phone?
Hi
I use atrix in mumbai..
The phone which you will get from ebay will be sim unlocked...that means you can use indian sim cards on the phone
To get rid of all blur software i would suggest you to install a custom rom from the forums..for which you will need to unlock bootloader root your phone and install custom recovery
Youll find tutorials for these in the forums
Cheers!

Here's the story,
it's been literally a whole month I've been looking throughout the forums for a way to simply unlock my bootloader for my HTC Glacier.
Previously, my phone fell into a puddle of water about 4-5 months ago so I got a new replacement with something labeled as "LOCKED" in the boot screen, which I had no idea what it was. So, I keep't requesting replacements, and I received a new one every time with a locked bootloader! I realized I couldn't/shouldn't unlock through HTC Dev because of all the consequences, so I just looked through just about every post on here about the MyTouch 4g on how to unlock it, and even trying HTC Dev when I became hopeless about the issue, it didn't even work! I'm STILL stuck on stock rom, stock everything, and with a LOCKED BOOTLOADER!
PLEASE, if anyone can help me in any possible way, I would be the most appreciative of any person on the planet! If you have the slightest idea on this issue, please comment below, message me, or something!
Thank you..

Does the standard downgrade procedure not work for you? When someone with and htc-dev unlocked bootloader comes in here we tell them to relock, dowgrade and use gfree to get S-Off.

Well if I didn't state it correctly, I am still locked. The downgrade I'm sure would work just fine if I could unlock, and I also cannot unlock through HTC Dev; during the fastboot commands, it does not allow me to flash the unlock code.bin file. I don't think there is a possible way for me to unlock this bootloader, which I'm hoping to find a way asap..

You didn't read me correctly. SKIP the unlock and downgrade then use gfree to get S-Off. The downgrade method predates your bootloader but still works with it as long as it's locked. S-Off gives you full access. An HTC-dev unlcked bootloader sucks butt. Also, your red text was rather unecessary.

Hello everyone, I just get ATT galaxy S4, It is so fancy, but ATT's craps sucks.
Does ATT S4's bootloader already been hack by XDAs?
If so, how to unlock it?
I just have the TWRP installed in my ATT galaxy S4, could I flash customized ROM and customized kernel now? Or I have to wait until the bootloader is unlock?

The Loki thing still has me confused and curious what folks think... I've been through many of flashes and had good and bad issues over the years but unsure how I feel about flashing up a ATT S4. I've been leaning towards getting a Tmobile S4 with a unlocked bootloader and getting that unlocked since I feel like it will be a bit more bulletproof. Is that paranoia or is Loki close enough to a unlocked bootloader that I can basically do everything with as little risk as would be expected with normal device flashing?

THIS INFO IS EVERYWHERE! READ MAN. useless thread here serious.
hey there bud, sorry everyone feels the need to repeatedly tell you to search instead of ending the thread with an explanation. im also sorry everyone else feels like this information is readily available, when its the furthest from that. you will require some digging and deduction skills to acquire all the information needed to fully utilize the loki function.
Since att took it upon themselves to lock the bootloader, the kernel has to be properly provisioned before it will allow it to boot (if the kernel is not set up correctly, you will receive an error about unapproved software on the device and will have to restore sans odin....yuck), so our awesome drjbliss and the infamous adamoutlers have provided a tool called "loki" which will allow bypassing of the locked bootloader and allow us to run the custom firmware.
please ensure that whatever ROM you are running has been previously provisioned with loki, or you are flashing a custom kernel that has loki baked in. Alternatively, there is an auto loki tool floating around called "loki doki" that can be flashed after any ROM to pre-loki it before boot.
You can PM me with any specific questions, and all you trolls should learn to help instead of complaining. In the amount of posts it took to complain about the OP not searching, it would have only taken one post to clarify and then this thread would have simply got buried.

Yes, I really like it. Not gonna Jailbreak, but my bank just started accepting Apple Pay. So, going to play with it. Something for an old man to have fun with.
It's just picking up steam as far as number of merchants, so ordered and will mess with the LoopPay FOB where AP isn't used yet. A year ago I would have sworn I would never use this techy stuff for banking. Must be getting soft.
Hello all,
I have a Verizon branded M8 AND have recently switched to TMob. The M8 is running 4.4.4 and is unfortunately still S-on and locked. Am I just stuck with a useless $600 phone until the Sunshine several developers come up with a way? Is that the only outfit with the capability of rooting this phone right now? Thanks in advance to anyone with any info.

Did you try calling verizon to get the unlock code?
If you have been with them for long, they will probably give it to you for free or maybe charge a fee but well you can use your phone then.
If they are unwilling to give you the unlock code then just say that you are gifting it to someone special or donating it. Just come up with a good humane reason and surely they will help.
They will also show you the procedure to unlock it.
Also as far as my knowledge goes, it is not possible to remove your phone carrier's lock using custom firmware.

I did try calling Verizon but i am trying to unlock the bootloader not the Sim. ... does that change your answer or should i try again?
See the htc forums on xda too.
Sim lock cannot be removed by flashing or installing custom firmwares. There is a separate procedure to unlock htc phones and their bootloaders.
I am familiar with htc sensation unlocking but don't know if it is the same for M8.
Will update you when I reach a full fledged computer with the relevant links.
You can also search the xda forums.

I am quite familiar with the htc bootloader and the unlock process. The process includes going to the htc Dev site and getting an unlock token that you then flash to the device using fastboot command. The problem is that verizon seems to be the only carrier who has somehow not allowed this. When you put your a string in on the dev site it comes back with a message saying "your carrier doesnt support" somethin like that neway.... i am wondering though if there is a way to do something at a more physical hardware layer. I mean it is jus a qualcomm chip at the end of the day... if i were to crack it open physically would i be able to access a non populated jumper that would completely erase the eeprom??

Hi everyone. I'm new to the rooting aspect, kinda. I did root my old samsung s5 back to kitkat after it was severely stunted by the lollipop update. Which I really hated. However, I have been following XDA since my first droid R2D2 edition. Now i'm on my 5th droid.
So, if you'll excuse me if this question has been posted. However, thru every tut i've read, they all state you need to unlock bootloader to root. And moto as well as vzw will void warranty if bootloader is unlocked. Correct me if I am wrong. (I posted a pic, but because of spamming, I can't post it because of being a newbie. That being the case, if anyone can answer my question, I will be glad to supply the link.)
But is this not an unlocked bootloader? And this phone shipped to me from moto. Granted, I had to unlock dev options. So would I still have to contact moto for the unlock code?
Running moto turbo 2.
Thanks for any info ya'll have.
