Only one I know if is made by Toshiba, as a thrive system app. Anyone know of any others that actually let me access a flash drive, easily transfer files back and forth, ect?
Astro works for me. Once you understand the naming conventions.
I use root explorer and it recognizes it. Astro as well.
ES file explorer. Just go to favourites and you'll see external sd card and usb drives...

A couple of good favorites,
But, for the internal, root explorer. A paid app, but, de-facto standard for working on things in the internal memory.
File Manager HD works as well. You can also run that app as root if you were going to change system files. As long as you know where to look pretty much any file explorer app should be able to access your usb storage device.
confusion..
Are you trying to read a micro USB card thru a adaptor or card reader.
If so not all brands of USB to SD will work.
I have one s carry in my purse to read full size cards that we use at work for job images.my tablet will NOT Read the SD card using this one. I think its a pny brand.

Huh? Just using a regular old flash drive.
Root explorer came with my ROM, it took me a while to figure out I had to look under mount points, but it works. Astro actually works better (easier) for USB. Thanked you guys for your suggestions. Big helps.

Trade you my ruptured knee, for your shoulder. I'll toss in my walking stick Custom made from Romania. For 6 starbucks coffee's I'll toss in the shattered plastic knee cap. Slightly used, 14yr old. But comes with accessories. Don't need it anymore.
No, you will get no sympathy, Just understanding. Life goes on.
ouch.
I was just short of needing joint replacement.and yes there are people far worse off then the both of us.
But with that said I will trade you some scar tissue and swelling for the coffee.hand deliveredfrom you.
Sorry for this in your thread op.
I will stop now.
I use root explorer and have always had astro.root explorer is not flashy or user friendly. Like a comand prompt it just works.
xD I don't mind at all. The websites I come from are close communities where people going on off topic tangents is the norm - I was starting to think that didnt exist much here in XDA. (It certainly doesn't in my phone's worthless forum. >_>
While everyones reading this thread, does anyone know any good calendar widgets? I'm looking for a full-month one that is at minimum 5x5.
As I have yet to find a magical file manager that does everything I need, I keep ES File Explorer, File Manager HD, and Astro installed. Between those, nothing I haven't been able to do. I do know I have used a 2gb thumb drive from Swiss Army and ES File Explorer showed it fine once I opened the favorites section.
Edit: After reading all the posts, I fear I may have misunderstood the question and repeated the same thing others have said.
s'ok. Actually, as I mentioned in my first post, the Toshiba thrive file manager is really nice. While it doesn't do root, maybe it could be ported over to the A500? It doesn't do root (unless there's a hack I haven't heard of) but it seems to do everything else very well.
(I was really looking at getting a thrive before I got gifted my a500. Turns out I like this one better anyways )
Thrive
I to actually like the look of the thrive tablet.. I Bought my acer when they were pre released. So it was not available.. Just like the ports on the thrive.. the ability to swap out the battery . and can put a CUTE PINK COVER ON THE Changeable back..
it feels very solid in your hand as well. with all the above said.. i do think the iconia is best.. unless the thrive gets totally unlocked...
When I first got my tablet, I was able to read some files from a USB flash drive as well as a 2tb external drive. Somewhere something went wrong and I was not able to read anything USB.
THEN
I did a factory reset and all is well.
Stock, not rooted. Came with 3.0 then updated to 3.1 then 3.2

4/4/2011 UPDATE:
Well, eLocity informed me that they where having supply issues with getting displays. So they decided to send me a new unit from their stock as I have already been waiting over a month and a half. It shipped out Friday and should arrive soon.
I was thinking of keeping it but decided I'd be better off selling it and getting some cash. so if anyone that has already expressed interest still want it let me know.
A7 with original accessories (charger, headphones w/ mic) $210 shipped.
Thanks.....

Have to sell my A7. It is currently running Dexters v1.3 ROM and come with a case (see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895353).
I have a second A7 that is currently at eLocity to have the screen at sat on replaced. They say it should be four weeks. I may sell that one too once I get it back.
Anyone interested PM me.

I don't think there is a problem with the Dexter ROM. Dexter's ROM is the Official eLocity ROM with Market and Google Apps added. As far as I'm aware the issues are inherent to the official ROM.
The only issue I've seen in my use are:
1. with the current ROM, in setting it does not show the the MicroSD card as there. The card is there and can be used though. Pictures show up in the gallery and the MicroSD card can be navigated with a file explorer app (i use Astro).
2. Not 100% sure but think apps can't be run from the MicroSD card. Someone said they moved app to the SD card recently, but I haven't tried.
any specific problem your referring to?
The issue with not reading the sd card, not being able to access to usb thumbdrives and numerous apps which will not install and run properly. I am a newb, BTW.

Like I pointed out above, when you go into the setting menu it doesn't show the SDcard as mounted in the latest firmware. But it is there and accessible. I put movies, pictures and music in mine and all are accessible.
I have no issues using USB drives. That's how I move the Update.zip file onto my internal SD card. I download it to my USB drive via my PC. Plug it into my A& then copy the Update.zip file to my internal storage from the USB drive using Astro file manager.
Yes, there are apps that won't work. AS there are app that won't work on my g tablet either. Not sure if it has to do with the apps not yet supporting the Tegra 2 processor or tablets or what. For example Google earth won't run on either my A7 or the viewsonic g tablet.
I guess it all depends on what the user wants the device to do. For me e-mail, Internet, Skype and google calendar are the main use. Don't really use my device for games (occasional Angry Birds or paper toss).

Question:
After rooting, what exactly all can I do with it?
I understand I can flash Roms, user Market, etc...
But does it work just like any OTHER Android device then (Tablet, phone, etc)?
As in, can I surf the web? Can I make phone calls? Can I?
CAN I???
=D
Your brief answer would be appreciated since I'm completely new to the Nook world. I have an oppotunity to pick one up for 189, and was wondering if I should.
You can use it just like any other non-honeycomb tablet. You can put Cyanogenmod on it. You can only make calls using a sip client, and only using a bluetooth headset, no 3.5" headphone mic.
Look around, there is a dedicated developer community around the nook, you will find you can do things you never thought possible with it.

I have not yet seen a workaround for the lack of audio input hardware. So at best you can text (using emulation software) and hear but not speak in and VOIP settings.
There are 2 major things that you, OP, need to understand
1. This little 7" device is an EREADER, not a tablet, so don't ask too much about it, don't jump and say it's suck 'cuz lack of hdmi or missing camera.
2. You must know what stock ROM has offered and what is their limitation. Understand it clearly, then rooting it and comparing back what after and before, have offered.
To answer your questions
Can you surf web? yes
Can you make call? 99% no (must use Google Voice with bluetooth headset with plus this and plus that and plus others, basically, it's painful.)
I didn't think you need to root stock to flash new roms... Just book CWM off a SD card, and flash the roms... they already have root access.

Just keep in mind, if you're flashing to internal memory... You're going to overwrite the stock rom. There's lots of threads here already detailing how to return to stock if you need to. You can also boot a new rom off the SDcard if you just want to check them out before taking the plunge. Again, plenty of threads about that too.

I see what your saying about booting off the SDcard, can you just leave it that way and boot off the the SD and then sometimes not off the SD and use the Nook firmware. Reason I'm asking is looking for a Reader for the wife that I can also "play" with and use as a tablet, but also leave it so she can use it as the way it was meant to be.
Absolutely, and this is how I've been using it. There are some problems for a couple of apps that expect to be in the internal memory, such as AdFree and ClockworkMod, but those are in the minority. However, I must remind you to choose your microSD card wisely. I use a 16GB class 4 SanDisk.

The SD card doesn't make a difference, you just have to figure out if you can live with 8/16 GB of storage. The answer is probably yes, if you are willing to use streaming services (google music, netflix, etc.)
I personally would not be able to live with SD cards in my life. I will have to end myself soon because Dropbox and Google Drive are taking over.
Oh well...

of course you can, just plug the phone into your computer and it gets recognized as a mass storage device...
I think 16GB will be more than sufficient for me. If it isn't than I will just get a USB OTG cable and use the current Micro SD card that I have. I have an adapter that I can plug the SD card into that allows it to be plugged into a USB port. So effectively giving myself access to expandable SD storage
Probably won't need it, but that's my plan.

eh man i am not complaining
Came from a G2 (with microSD card slot) to a Gnex, I have to say I didn't miss the card even a bit. 16GB is fine since I use Google music for streaming, and that's the majority part of storage. I don't use GNex's camera that much. I have a Canon D550 and there isn't a phone camera that could produce pictures even similar in quality.
You might want to mange your space a little, like deleting unwanted backups, not having a million Titanium backups, but it's manageable.
I must admit, although I would rather have a micro-SD slot, its really not a feature I'm over worried about in terms of storage. What concerns me is whether it increases the risk of flashing roms etc to the phone. I you brick you phone, is it not going to make it more difficult to unbrick it? Or can adb always push stuff to the phone one way or another?
Also, just to confirm, you personal data stored internally (in what I assume will be called the sdcard folder) is retained each time you wipe your phone, right?

intern is not your SD
I've got a GS3 with a 32gb SD Card (as well as the internal at 16gb) and now a 16gb Nexus 7. I have to be honest and say it does bug me. If you download nightlies and make a lot of Nandroids then your going to suffer to get used to it. There is no way I would recommend an 8gb. I travel a lot on flights and that is when I really miss the storage for music and films, but I do have the phone to fall back on. That said, there are plenty of iSheep out there that don't seem to struggle and Google Drive and Google Music are awesome services. Perhaps I'm the one that should be more tolerant.

Hey mazdarati2,
I came from the Droid Incredible to the Galaxy Nexus and I can tell you that having a large internal memory rather than the SD card slot is really not a big deal. At first, I thought I would miss it also, but I really wanted the Nexus. The only downside comes if you have a tendency to work with experimental/unstable ROMs, which can corrupt the filesystem on the memory and you will have to reformat and push the factory image with fastboot. When you do this, the SD memory partition gets formatted as well, which is a bummer and if you ever had any problems like that on phones with a physical SD card, you wouldn't have that problem. For the average user that doesn't use more than 8-16GB of space, it will cause no problems, in fact, it will be better because it gets rid of system confusion when saving pictures/videos/other files and then finding them when you connect to your PC. I hope this helps and sways your decision towards getting a nexus 4. It's a great phone and if you're on pre-paid, it will save you a lot of money in the long run! Good Luck!

The reason I assumed 'sdcard' folder, is because the LG 4X HD, which has both sd and 16GB internal storage places all of your user files in the sdcard directory independent of whether you are using an sdcard. The actual sdcard files are stored in '/sdcard/external_sdcard' which I must admit I found slightly odd.

Hi the thread already exist please suppress this one and next time search a little there is just two page ...
There are two apps I have used that do this fairly easily. Try either App2SD or Link2SD. Both do the same thing. I also believe AppMonster does, but I've never used it for this purpose. If they say you cannot move an app, it is probably because the MOJO sets the external microSD in a way that it is detected as emulated rather than physical. As I've yet to get a microSD to work at all, I cannot tell what the problem is...I just know from experience on the Acer A700 that -it- is set up so you cannot send apps to the microSD.

Most high end games are 500mb - 1gb or more. I like to play a lot of different games you know? Just kind of sucks that we can't move them to expandable storage at the moment. 16 GB is not going to be enough in the future when more games become compatible.

Yeah, I filled mine with Horn, Bard's Tale, AvP, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Reaper, and about ten random others. I've filled my tablet, and it's got 32GB. I loves me some games.
So, what is the difference between the standard Shield TV with 16G, and the "Pro" version with a 500G HDD? Just the extra 500G storage? If so, is it simple to add an SSD to the 16G model, and get a better deal than the Pro version that way?
PS: for Black Fridays, the 16G version is dropping to 149.99$ with the remote included, so why is the point of the 500G version?
Just the storage difference. Most buy the 16GB and get a SD card.
It is not possible to add an SSD to the pro model without soldering. It doesn't have the headers. To be honest the pro feels like less and less of good idea as time goes on -- I've been regretting that I bought that version. If you want to store a very large amount of apps or media it can be useful but it really doesn't have any way to justify the price.

So, if I buy the 16G, and root it, and install utorrent in it... can I just attach a 1TB USB 3.0 to it, and have uTorrent download movies to it? Can I just sideload the apks to the Micro SD as well?

Nothing you've said there requires root, unless you have another reason to root?
Depending on the drive, the HDD may need a powered hub. My FireTV did.
From what I've read apps can be moved to MicroSD but not USB.
Torrenting movies makes you a -edit- bad person

You are very quick to point a finger, aren't you? I always find 'your' type of people to be the ones hiding the ugliest stones =].
Ok, let's say I need to torrent movies, but never specified that the movies I need are home made movies shot in my country, where the internet speeds are very slow, and torrenting my family's movies are the fastest, most stable way of getting them.
My reasons to root are the same that you signed up in this forum for, in the first place (see what I did there?).

Thanks for your help, I decided to go with the 16G model, and open it up for modding/destroying it. In theory, soldering is easy, but I'll be scared if there's anything related to software mods :s. I read somewhere that someone was able to mount one of those flash hybrids though.
