The SD card doesn't make a difference, you just have to figure out if you can live with 8/16 GB of storage. The answer is probably yes, if you are willing to use streaming services (google music, netflix, etc.)
I personally would not be able to live with SD cards in my life. I will have to end myself soon because Dropbox and Google Drive are taking over.

i have 32 GB now so and i have 9GB free. but google music is not available in my country (yet). does it stream your music or is it like itunes?

of course you can, just plug the phone into your computer and it gets recognized as a mass storage device...
I think 16GB will be more than sufficient for me. If it isn't than I will just get a USB OTG cable and use the current Micro SD card that I have. I have an adapter that I can plug the SD card into that allows it to be plugged into a USB port. So effectively giving myself access to expandable SD storage
Probably won't need it, but that's my plan.

Came from a G2 (with microSD card slot) to a Gnex, I have to say I didn't miss the card even a bit. 16GB is fine since I use Google music for streaming, and that's the majority part of storage. I don't use GNex's camera that much. I have a Canon D550 and there isn't a phone camera that could produce pictures even similar in quality.
You might want to mange your space a little, like deleting unwanted backups, not having a million Titanium backups, but it's manageable.
I must admit, although I would rather have a micro-SD slot, its really not a feature I'm over worried about in terms of storage. What concerns me is whether it increases the risk of flashing roms etc to the phone. I you brick you phone, is it not going to make it more difficult to unbrick it? Or can adb always push stuff to the phone one way or another?
Also, just to confirm, you personal data stored internally (in what I assume will be called the sdcard folder) is retained each time you wipe your phone, right?

I've got a GS3 with a 32gb SD Card (as well as the internal at 16gb) and now a 16gb Nexus 7. I have to be honest and say it does bug me. If you download nightlies and make a lot of Nandroids then your going to suffer to get used to it. There is no way I would recommend an 8gb. I travel a lot on flights and that is when I really miss the storage for music and films, but I do have the phone to fall back on. That said, there are plenty of iSheep out there that don't seem to struggle and Google Drive and Google Music are awesome services. Perhaps I'm the one that should be more tolerant.

Hey mazdarati2,
I came from the Droid Incredible to the Galaxy Nexus and I can tell you that having a large internal memory rather than the SD card slot is really not a big deal. At first, I thought I would miss it also, but I really wanted the Nexus. The only downside comes if you have a tendency to work with experimental/unstable ROMs, which can corrupt the filesystem on the memory and you will have to reformat and push the factory image with fastboot. When you do this, the SD memory partition gets formatted as well, which is a bummer and if you ever had any problems like that on phones with a physical SD card, you wouldn't have that problem. For the average user that doesn't use more than 8-16GB of space, it will cause no problems, in fact, it will be better because it gets rid of system confusion when saving pictures/videos/other files and then finding them when you connect to your PC. I hope this helps and sways your decision towards getting a nexus 4. It's a great phone and if you're on pre-paid, it will save you a lot of money in the long run! Good Luck!

The reason I assumed 'sdcard' folder, is because the LG 4X HD, which has both sd and 16GB internal storage places all of your user files in the sdcard directory independent of whether you are using an sdcard. The actual sdcard files are stored in '/sdcard/external_sdcard' which I must admit I found slightly odd.

So when I first got the xoom I was not too concerned with getting more storage so the whole SD card issue was moot. But now I have been ripping my DVDs into mp4 format and I have basically used up all my internal storage with about a dozen movies. I wonder when Motorola might grace us with an official patch to add SD functionality. I don't want to root my device.

Apparently, there's one other way to add more storage, but you're not gonna like it.
Inside the xoom is a mini pci-ex slot that could, theoretically, hold another small hard drive. This is still in the planning phase though, and ofc it means disassembly of your xoom. Considering the fact that you don't want to root, I'm gonna guess disassembly is going to be out of the question.
As far as rooting... why don't you want to do that? Yes, I know it's scary to root, but I've never talked to anyone who has regretted rooting their device. The additional features, working sd card and overclocking ability are worth the small amount of hassle it takes to get rooted.

Why don't you buy an OTG cable and get a UsB powered hard drive. You can put all your movies and view them that way.

Yep, I second this option.
The Verizon XOOM LTE upgrade will not be hitting before July, when it is currently scheduled. This date, as loose as it is, had the specific caveat that it is very possibly subject to further delay.
For obvious reasons, I won't name the source, but I will state that they are within Verizon, and are in a position to have accurate information.
Its not coming. Just like the sd card fix. I've already given up. Lesson learned: never buy from Motorola.

The SD card issue is joke already. There is NO REASON as to why they cany have it working for us.
Sadly, those of us who gave Motorola one last try (on the Xoom, after we were all burned with locked boot loaders on the Droid X and subsequent phones) have been shown, once again, to not trust Motorola.
Yeah, some of the things that come with the Galaxy Tab 10.1 are limited/annoying, but Samsung is proving to be a monster of a manufacturer/designer. Thinner than iPad2? Yes please. OPTIONAL Tablet Touch Wiz UI? Doesn't bother me, it's OPTIONAL. Sure, it was probably Google's call on that one, but that's actually a good thing. Sounds like Google is headed in the right direction regarding Android skins.
Anyway, my Xoom is fine for me for now - and it was great as a first-adopter product. But NEVER again will I buy Motorola. EVER. This was the nail in the coffin. But I got my Honeycomb first, which was worth one last chance on Motorola.

As an Android developer who has to deal daily with multiple APIs across android revisions to store files on the sdcard, I pretty much want to punch you right now.
The sdcard situation is a huge mess. I'd rather have a final decent API, not another half-assed hack.
It's not "no reason", bub.

I can understand from a developer perspective but the damage is already done with all these other tablets releasing with working SD cards. It is too late now. Google/Motorola should have had this working before any other tablet released with a working SD card and they failed. I am also in the group where I will never buy a Motorola device again. My first and last.

Yea.....agreed..they robbed 800 from me. I will never even by so much as a Bluetooth from moto again. I know it will impact nothing. But the4g and SD card is just 2 much...lawyer said in 2 months there would be a leg to stand on if no lte and SD by then...not so much SD as it was never really advertised but lte def.

Thing is, you'd be the first person screaming if a majority of your apps started force closing due to the sdcard hack that'd have to be used until Google finalizes the new API.
Also, I wish people would stop making absolute statements they lack the qualifications to make.
Just saw over at Droid world that 4g and SD card slot will be done in mid July but get this you will have to box up your Xoom and send it off.I'm happy to see the updates coming but jeez sending off my xoom and waiting for god knows how long is absurd

I would settle for powering down and being able to just load my files the old fashion way, if it would just read the sd card! And 4G ain't really tha important to me. Not like i'm gonna be streaming a moving dtiving down the road any way. It will get fixed, just give it some time. The xoom rocks no matter how you look at it. And just be happy not buying one those crapple knockoffs from samsung! That thing looks like a kids toy.

BUT.. here is the thing... why did the SD card need a new API in the first place? SD cards have been working since 1.X; apps to SD since 2.2. None of this functionality is new, so why the sudden inability to keep it?

When Android first came out internal storage was meant for apps and data only. Things like music and movies were stored on external storage (i.e. sdcard). When an application requests access to external storage it is in reality given access to /sdcard.
Now devices, like the xoom, have much larger internal storage and so can store what historically been kept on an sdcard internally. The problem is that applications are still (correctly) requesting external storage for the storage and manipulation of large files. This access points to /sdcard still. If you look on your xoom you will see all your music, movies, dropbox, etc... are stored in the /sdcard folder.
One problem. The xoom does not have an sdcard in it.
So now, with more modern devices Android needs a way to be able to intelligently allocate access to both the internal storage as well as a sdcard. This can not be done well if both point to /sdcard and thus a solution must be made.
Does that help to explain why this was not a problem in the past but now is?

Hey guys, I dont have any experience using a device with an SD card slot. What are some pro's and con's? what are the major differences? Basically im thinking of just ordering the GS4 16GB instead of waiting for the 32GB and I want to make sure I'm making the right decision.

you are. spending 100 dollars more for built in 16gb more memory is retarded.. buy a 64 micro sdxc. they don't clutter themselves with android system files, so they only have what you care about on them. take them out and plug them right into your comp to transfer files, or stick it in a friends phone to bulk transfer music, videos, pics, whatever. its like using your c drive for your OS, and an external hdd for all your media, very easily sharable

obviously depends on the user, an example about me i bought the Galaxy Note 16GB phone it comes with an SD option as always.
i always downloaded files and saved copies on my phone and mine was usually full even though i had a 32GB Class 10 SD in the phone which was lets say 85% in usage.. for me a 16GB isn't enough if you take too many pictures and videos, plus download applications , book,documents, and movies you will end up without space which is what happens to me always this time seems iam awaiting the 32GB version hopefully i will be happy for once and not do the mistake all over again
as for hardware is easier for you to have a good SD high class category and save your files on it leave the internal storage for apps, games,picture and videos.... taken by the phone if 16GB is more than enough with you get a 4GB backup SD only for CWM files in case of flashing of some backup thats all you need nothing more my friend

Thanks for the help! Again, sorry I have no experience. So once the SD card is in the phone and lets say I want to listen to a song from the card. Will I have to do anything extra or I can just go into the music player and play the song?
just go and play it the system scans media each startup so no need everything is saved in cache and your settings are saved too
I have just moved from the Galaxy S2 across to the brand new S4, and so far it seems great. A really beautiful phone and generally pretty happy.
BUT.....
When I was using the S2, it was a snap to move apps and files across from the phone storage to the SD Card storage. Well, I am stumped as to how to do this with the S4!!!?? It doesn't seem rational to me to have a phone that will allow you to expand the storage with an SD Card, but then not allow you to actually move anything across. That's like Woolworths giving you a shopping trolley and then not allow you to put anything in the trolley?? That is nuts.. So it must be me...
Could anyone out there please give me a heads up on how to move apps across to the SD Card? I only have 16 gig in phone storage and that is getting eaten up real quick with apps and bloatware, so I really need to be able to use the 32 gig SD card I have installed.

The option was removed since Jelly Bean unfortunately.
That's exactly the reason why I don't understand their choice of releasing a 16GB version (of which only 9GB remain usable).
I bought the 32GB S3 for this reason, and I'm waiting for the 32GB version of the S4 as well, if they ever decide to release it.
If you root your device, there are still options like DirectoryBind, but they aren't perfect, and I think we shouldn't have to mess with stuff like that on a flagship device.
Directorybind is broken at the moment. The app foldermount however is very close to fixing this issue.
The developer is working very hard on getting it fixen and is almost there (he's using my phone for debugging)
It seems that samsung has fuzzled it up themself. Not Google.
If you are rooted there still ain't no way to move files to the external sdcard. But it won't be long till that's fixen and that's the good news!

Thanks for that info. I didn't think it was a Jelly Bean issue because the S2 received the JB upgrade and it was still able to transfer to the ext SD card. But obviously it is different for the recent phones. But I don't get it?? Why make a phone that can expand storage through an ext SD Card and then restrict the transfer of apps to that storage?? I don't get it either.
The microSD slot is great, but advertising it as a replacement of the internal memory is wrong (so many people seem to think they can have a 80GB phone if they add the microSD to their 16GB phone, but don't know the limitations).
32GB should be the minimum internal memory for a 2013 flagship device.

Guess what?? I am one of those people!!! After knowing about the restrictions, I feel a little cheated and agree 100% with you that 32 gig is the entry level storage considering all the bloatware Sammy has included.

I'm using Android Tuner Free to move big apps (eg games like Deadspace ) across to the SD card. Free app, go into App Mgr, select the app you want to move, click the manage button, choose the move button, select SD-Link. It's working fine for me so far...

You also have to reinstall apps if you want to update them, since the app will not be scripted to support the bind when installing.

Hello colleagues, today became the owner of LG nexus4. Some time ago I wrote a brochure that the phone come with a slot for a micro SD card and without reference to the source or a second opinion, I bought the phone with 8GB memory. till now i have a phone with 16gb and somehow fit in it, but this 8gb are not enough for me. My question is if there is a way to add storage hardwarly somehow?
Nope, it's impossible. The only way would be to buy a different device.
Unless you want to find a ROM/kernel that supports USB OTG, and you could use a flash drive to store things. I'm not sure how well implemented this is on the n4 though.
That's easy. Just download Google drive; it offers 15gb free space .

And of course, how could I forget. The main reason for the lack of space is because Google is pushing cloud storage. It is the future after all, and I find it is so much easier than worrying about physical storage space.
The only problem with cloud storage is it requires a wifi connection and you cannot directly stream from it if wifi speeds arent fast enough, ex. music/movies. Thats why i despise cloud storage unless you need to store files that do not have to stay on your phone 24/7

If you have enough data, it can be useful anywhere you have a data connection. But of course, not everyone has that.

Hello punish, you can add hardware storage only with usb otg. Read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2181820
You should have an otg y-cable and flash a zip in recovery.
But then you still have to be next to a power source for your extra storage. This is the single thing that seriously annoys me with the devices today.
I remember getting my old 5th gen iPod video 80gb back in 2005 when it first came out. And it still works perfectly fine today despite being 8 years old and using a hard drive instead of flash storage.
I mean how can companies offer a device with 8gb (5gb usable) and possibly suggest it is enough. That is 10 times less than a product from 8 years ago.
I know they are pushing cloud storage but still in today's world it is turd.
Not everybody has unlimited data.
No provider will have great reception everywhere.
Devices nowadays are pushing 1080p screens and you will only possibly be able to stream 1080 media on lte which will lower your reception areas down significantly.
Streaming files from the cloud will consume far more battery than playing local content.
I don't even understand how they thought that we are in a current state where cloud storage is better than local.
At least not until we have gigabit mobile internet and mobile sized flash storage that can write at those speeds. It's just a gimmick that can be used for backing up non important files and if your lucky streaming music.

You'll have to be a little handy since it needs to be modded. Basically, there's a LOT of wasted space inside the case, which makes it perfect for adding a usb flash drive / card reader.
I'm using a Kingston G2 reader with a 64gb microsdxc card. I'm really hoping they release a G3 with uhs support soon.. Class 10 is so slow.
The biggest issue I have with "cloud" services is the stupidity of Google Play Music. It'll cache and cache and cache with no limits. Sooner or later, it'll have gobbled up all the storage.

Big gotcha with Wireless flash storage - when you connect to the wireless storage, you give up access to the cell network or other wifi you were using for data. Thus, you have to choose - data or storage. You can't have both.
Best solution to add 8gb more memory to a Nexus 4 is to get rid of the Nexus 4 and get a phone with more memory.
