So I was checking around to see if T-mobile will support tethering and I found this blog that was written today. No T-Mobile Tethering Support.
Here's what it says if you don't want to click the link:
"As many of you know, stock Android 2.2 supports tethering out of the box. However, the folks over at TmoNews have discovered that while this is the case, the T-Mobile G2 will not support tethering at launch. See T-Mobile's official comment regarding this below:
“T-Mobile does not currently support handset tethering or offer a tethering rate plan. Though tethering and Wi-Fi sharing will not be initially supported on the T-Mobile G2, we know that consumers are interested in these features and we are working to develop a solution to support them in the future.”
While this is disappointing, the good news is that T-Mobile appears to be working on a solution as they know people are very interested in this. Let's hope we all get to tether officially soon.
So folks, do you think this will happen? Do you think G2 owners will ever get the option?"
Root + WiFi Tether will fix that ASAP.
T-Mobile does not support tethering anymore
T-Mobile does not support tethering any phone it is against the terms and conditions of your contract.
That said T-Mobile also does not do take any steps to block tethering, they do not block apps like pda.net or easy tether. Smartphone data speeds will get throttled once you reach 10 Gigs of data usage.

Then T-Mobile should deploy SWAT team to kill whoever do tethering.
i have seen the settings.apk from the G2 and it had tethering option so it may work but they won't actually provide helpdesk support for it
It probably has the USB tether left in tact, Like most phones do now. The wifi tethering they remove.
Just an FYI: the reason why tmobile doesn't BLOCK tethering is because they *CAN'T*. There is NO WAY FOR THEM TO KNOW that you are tethering or that you have a tethering application installed on your phone.
carrier way of blocking tethering is to block/remove from market
CyanogenMod.
Cyanogen's already got a G2 build ready to go, if I understood one of his recent tweets... we just need actual phones and a root method.
I can't wait lol
i must have missed that tweet, that sounds awesome, we just need to get root on it and we're good to go, ENG build and stock build(root and un-root) just need to get device in hand and try a few things to get root
Has anyone tried to do usb tethering?
By apps or configuring the pc?
Similiar to this thread in the samsung vibrant section:
HOWTO: Tethering in windows 7 (no app needed!)
*I cant post link need mod approval
well my G2 demo does not seem to have the option, although the settings apk from the shipped rom thread had it when i put it on my slide, so no native tether on G2 which is upsetting as hell
PDA NET WIRED tether works on my T-mobile G2 on windows 7 64
does this interest anyone?
Yes thats good that pda app works, thx.
If thats the only way to tether then I have to buy the app.

I'm using the free one just fine.
Tether and Hot Spots will be cooked into a rom and soon as we get some devs in here. No worries.

T-mobile may not "officially" support tethering but their tech support was very helpful
when I was having issues tethering my TM506 to my netbook back in 08
I went over 10GB last month and never even had my speed throttled. I moved and used my N1 as a wireless hotspot for about 2 weeks before I got my cable hooked up. I regularly go over 5GB without tethering at all.

I am a newbie Android addict (ditched my iphone for Samsung Captivate w/AT&T) and LOVE it. I'm also new to this site so please forgive if this has already been covered but I couldn't find it.
I would love to get the new Samsung Tab as soon as it hits the U.S. market but no way do I want to pay for an additional data plan. Will there be a way to tether the tablet to my Captivate? And if so, how? I am desperate for an answer. Please, please someone tell me if this is possible or not? Thanks in advance!
Robin
what will happen is you are going to have to pay full price.. 649 for one with no contract. You can root it (captivate) and tether via wifi using tether app.... then when it (the Tab) gets modded to use voice (which I plan on) then you can mod that rom on and then put your sim into the TAb..
pretty much my plan except on tmobile.. and i would be tethering with my g1
This also is my plan, but on AT&T and tethered to my Aria. But this depends on whether or not the required phone hardware is installed on the US version and can be accessed with rooted ROM.

Hm? Is it confirmed that the US version would still have voice capability? Last I heard someone was suggesting to wait for people to take it apart to make sure the hardwares are all there.

AFAIK there will be WiFi-only and 3G version in various different flavours, as well as a CDMA version for Sprints aging technology.

Indeed
If you aren't going to use the data line, then tbh I'd just wait for the wifi only version. No reason to pay extra for something you won't use. You will still be able to use the wireless AP on the captivate to tether.

Did you ever make a cellular voice call from a 3G-equipped laptop? No? Well thats because there is no audio in/out from the 3G module in a laptop. The wires are not there. Its definitely possible for Samsung to neuter the tab in that way if they want to...
I currently have a Vibrant and have unlocked the wireless hotspot that comes with the phone. I want to get the mytouch but T-Mobile is now imposing a 14.99 tether plan as of November 3rd. I do not use tethering enough to justify that expense, do you guys think we will be able to unlock the tethering that is built into froyo or just use some sort of app off the market to avoid paying the 14.99?
Pdanet is what I use on my wife's Vibrant.

Should work as long as they don't gimp the market like AT&T has.
In either event, hacks to re-enable FroYo's built-in tethering should be trivial.
ATT GIMPED the market? how so I tether always I leave it on all night at hotels sometimes and no repercussions. Same plan no extra charge. unless they changed something and im grandfathered in with my old 4 year unlimited internet plan.

Yes, gimped. As in, you can't install un-trusted sources. It's an option on every other android handset, except those from AT&T. They pretty much took the best part about Android and neutered it.
Are you rooted? I'm talking about stock settings, where you can't get at the option to change it. Of course, rooting is another story, but having the android market being the only official source for apps sucks ass.
Speaking as an employee of T-mobile, I am seriously confused as to how the company is going to implement these charges. I just got the mytouch 4g as a champion device, and the tethering works just fine for me! I didn't change my account or anything, but then again I am not on a standard account. Now, I doubt that the phone automatically disables the feature when it detects an account without the tethering feature, but maybe T-Mo has something up their sleeve. They like to leave us in the dark with the important details.
Edit: Also didn't consider that maybe it's something to do with the champion device itself. Perhaps they left it unlocked for us to screw with, but I'll test a retail unit soon and see if there's a difference.
Anyone have any ideas if the 3G will be worth it, there are some discouraging posts over at the notion ink blog, in the comments section, about the bandwidth limitations on the 3G models and them being selected for you, instead of allowing us to pick our own.
(I am one of the ones that did not get a pre-order in on time)
It would be considered a new contract on AT&T so you would not have unlimited data. Also in the US it is only for AT&T
Why thank you for that, being a sprint person, and an Android lover, AT&T is certainly not something I want to deal with, at least that helps me with my decision, I'll just have to use a USB Sprint 4G adapter... :

If you have an android phone I would recommend root it and install wifi tether. Rooting is a very simple process for the EVO at unrevoked.com and I am not sure if it will have support for a usb adapter. You might get the MiFi that is coming to Sprint soon.
Interesting topic. Since I am also on Sprint, its probably better off just getting the Wifi version and wifi tether to the EVO or pdanet. Now when Traveling overseas where Sprint doesn't work (except Jamaica and Taiwan) I guess the wifi will have to just do.

Can you tether an Android device to an Android device? I have purchased EasyTether, I use it for work when I have to drive between states, but did not know they made an Android app to tether to, I thought it only worked on PC's. I'll have to go to their website and look into it.
On Android if you root it you can install a WiFi Tether application that allows you to turn your phone into a hot spot without having to pay Sprint.

I thought WifI Hotspot tethering was a standard feature in Froyo...
I have it on my Desire (yes it's rooted, but I think the hotspot functionality was part of the original ROM).

It is a standard feature but the service providers locked it down so you would have to pay them to use it. The nexus one and s are the only ones that have it enabled.
You can pick your carrier with the adam
Rohan's interview on Android Police states:
AP: Regarding the 3G model, how many frequency sets are being offered? In the US, AT&T and T-Mobile run on different 3G bands, necessitating at least two US 3G models.
Rohan: Initially we offered only one 3G module which was suited for AT&T, but then when customers requested we changed their models. From next pre-order everyone will be given an option of deciding their own 3G module for a specific frequency.
So, if you have already pre-ordered but want a different carrier...email them and provide your order info with your carrier preference. If you pre-order now you will have an option to indicate your choice
Data limitations will be determined by cell carrier not this device. And yes, every company but Sprint has a limit on data right now. Come to think of it, Sprint might have a limit for their USB hotspot and for the devices that have an EVDO radio in them, not sure on that.
Regardless as others stated, if this bothers you just wifi tether. But I have a Chrome Netbook with a verizon connection in it and I love it. Not having to deal with wifi tether all the time is nice.

I just ordered my Adam and the only model left was the Pixel Qi 3G version. If I had a choice, I would have gone wifi only because I don't have AT&T as a carrier (I have Verizon). Was it just me that found a lack of info on the website about the 3G carrier requirements? It wouldn't have changed my order (because I ordered to late), but it seemed a little vague. I'm still stoked to get the adam though.
Cheers!
Has anyone noticed difficulties with wifi tethering on tmobile since update 4.3?
I was able to bypass the T-Mobile hotspot plan before the update (rooted) using pdanet+ but since updating to 4.3 it takes me right to the tmobile hotspot page informing me that i dont have the feature on my plan.
I also tried smart wifi tether but that gave me the same issue.
Has tmobile just gotten wise to all of the wifi tethering or do the apps just not have it working correctly on 4.3?
has anyone noticed what.. that tmobile has caught on to your theft?
they want everyone to switch to their new plans, the new data packages all include tethering. they all include unlimited tethering, except the completely unlimited high speed data package includes 500mb(but can buy more). if you are tethering another device, they arent counting it towards tethering, laptops/desktops they do.

That didnt really answer my question. Plenty of people use rooted phones with tethering apps to bypass carriers outrageous fees for the service. I had it working fine on 4.2.2 but since I updated to 4.3, the same setup i was previously using is now bringing me right to the carrier sign up page. Which means it is no longer working as intended. I was curious about the cause of this and if there was any way to get it working again.

Hi, i not agree that this is a theft.Tethering option is provided from google the same way as blackberry os ,when i had blackberry 9700 there was nothing that says tethering plan or something. There was even an option to dial from windows connection for modems with some combination of digits and these #*.Now i am not even trying to find a loophole .Nexus is with non tmobile software so the first problem is resolved, and second, guys on ubuntu there is nothing like tmobile upsell page, your connection does not being rooted to their transparent proxy witch actualy detects windows , and shows the upsell page.If you want free legal (without modification anything on the phone or pc) yeah you need ubuntu and chrome, opera though doesn't work so this browser is dead to me hahah.Basically when i got my nexus i just connected it with usb to tether and everything was working. And t mobile has enough bandwith megahertz to handle heavy users like me , i do around 250 gb per month. And if you live alone u can cut your home internet.Well if i was rich like most americans i was going to think like you probably haha

i agree with you. the option to tether is free to use, its provided by the phone default. but, you are using tmobiles service which is not free. your ability to tether is free, but the right to use tmobiles services while tethered is not free, and we are obliged to follow their rules(legally), or they can and will stop their service.
imagine buying a car, it has an engine, wheels, everything needed to drive. but, even though you can freely drive, you have to purchase gas. you arent entitled to the gas free, even though the car has the ability to drive included.

i make around $50000 a year, which sounds like a lot. but.. in live in nyc, where the cost of living is much more than everywhere else in the US. so my 50000 has a realistic value of about 25000-30000 if you compare it to other US cities, which is nothing. i live paycheck to paycheck, and have a hard time filling my needs.
$20 internet? i pay 50+20(unlimited+tax) so it turns out to be around $82.
Yeah i even want to get off these 500 min for $35,but its not posible, don't know how it is in NY but i can give u an example the gasoline here in san francisco region is the most expensive. And i am getting lower than nothing.Even i'm filing for disability welfare i worked 7 years with no vacation, paying taxes on instalments for 2008-2012 and i know that nothing is gonna change so lets get some money from the best country in the world. My disability its not even on the list in my country.Dont go there for vacation its gonna be the worst ever vacation , Bulgaria.

yea, its expensive in san fran also, i have family there. and im in the same boat, last week long vacation was in 2006.
sure, we might make more money in the US, but the cost of living is very expensive too(in big cities, less in the country. less pay in the country as well). i know movies/tv show how great we live in the us, but for the majority of people here its not realistic, its a fantasy.

So I was in the PA thread over in the original development section and i searched for the hotspot issue. It seems that other people are also having issues using a hotspot on tmobile while on the rom. I saw a post that said some people have the issue and some dont. However it was hard to see if it ever got resolved because that thread is an absolute zoo. I was gonna post a question about it and how it might be resolved but I dont have enough posts to be allowed in the development section.
Demonic, it seems like you were one of the lucky ones that it happens to work for on. See i can usb tether, but wifi hotspot will just redirect to a tmobile webpage no matter if its a phone or a laptop thats connected to it.

Im using all the stock settings, i never modified anything.
-I was on stock android, got the OTA for 4.3
-Then rooted and flashed PA and their gapps
-havent modified any apn settings with the exception of the "use defaults" option to reset my connection (but i dont believe that changes anything)
My tmo plan is the 30 dollar prepaid with 100 minutes and 5gb of 4g (it worked fine on this plan before on rooted 4.2.2 but i was not on PA)
