Audio pops and ticks - Kindle Fire General

Hope it's alright to ask this here, as I know these forums are mostly about rooting and such. Just thought this would be the best place in contrast to other Kindle forums where hardly anyone is tech savvy.
I've been having a strange and highly irritating problem. In a few games, such as Battleheart, Where's My Water and Jelly Defense -- I hear these popping and ticking kind of sounds over the game music. It's not really distortion either, it sounds more like an audio buffer problem. It also only seems to occur on these specific game apps too and everyone else I've asked said this is not normal. Watching movies, listening to music and other apps all sound fine, so I know the speakers can't be blown or anything of that sort. It's noticable with and without headphones on too, just to be clear.
I've tried factory resets, reinstalling the games various times, disabling wifi, ES Task Manager to kill background apps and basically everything I could think of. I know the next step is simply exchanging or returning, but I wanted to see if there was perhaps something I'm overlooking before I deal with all that. I can't honestly tell if it's software or hardware related, or why this only happens with certain apps.

I have never heard of this problem but it does sound like it might have something to do with the device itself...

Alright, I recorded what I'm experiencing using a mic. The first 20 seconds is the menu music for Battleheart, the second half is Where's My Water. If you listen, you should be able to hear the "tick tick tick tick" I was speaking of. Almost sounds like distortion or lag but again, this only happens with a few game apps and nothing else. Regardless of volume. I'm stumped.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7004074/ticking.mp3

imagine the game is not 100% compatible with the KF ?

I don't think that's the case because I asked a few other people with these games, and they said they didn't experience this. It's also never mentioned once in reviews for these apps either. They're both quite popular too.

the others have this games also on the KF ?
b.t.w. if you'r a gamer this could be interesting for you and maybe the solution (if you'r rooted):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1412663

Yes, I checked with only other Fire users. They said they didn't hear any sound glitches, or perhaps they just didn't notice.
That does appear tempting but really, I'm not interested in rooting or taking the chance as I'm fine with the device as is aside from these problems.

it sounds like you got a bad one ...

Yeah, I thought so. I wonder why this problem only persists with certain game apps though. Does KF by default have hardware acceleration? Perhaps mine is simply not working.
I just remembered that I had also tried "Puzzle Quest 2 (Kindle Fire Edition)" and it ran poorly, forgot about that. It was pretty slow and choppy, with no other reviews mentioning this. It'd be nice if the OS worked like Windows and I could simply check/uncheck hardware acceleration just to be sure it's enabled.

i assume you mean graphics hardware acceleration
the kf uses software graphics by default
it has a hardware graphics which will only be used if the app or game can activate it
with the method in my other thread (link above) i force all gl-based graphics to hardware

Major flaw in the HTC HD2: 250ms Audio Delay

For the lazy reader:
Your HD2 probably suffers from an audio lag using the default media players. This is evident in the transformers movies and many other videos. You just may not have noticed it for a variety of reasons. There is no fix yet.
Coreplayer/TCPMP are not solutions, since they defeat the purpose of proper HW scaling and decoding for battery life/processor utilization. They also render the video improperly (bad scaling, colorspaces, etc), and Coreplayer doesn't even support AAC+ (HE-AAC) audio.
BACKSTORY
The first day I got my HD2 from TMOUS, I noticed that the included Transformers videos suffered from what appeared to be close to a 250ms audio delay. Sure enough, the problem was universal to all video files unless an artificial delay is introduced into the transcoding process. This means that every video file placed on the device will play back with the audio playing up to 250ms (about 1/4 second) late. This turned out to be a very common problem with the HTC HD2 and many devices seem to suffer from it (including some other HTC devices mentioned in this thread), particularly in video playback. This is a not a placebo effect and is very noticeable--in some videos/scenes more than others due to video pacing.
Before you post to say "Mine doesn't seem to do it," read the following and check again just in case--you'll be surprised. As I mention below, to some people with untrained eyes, even a 250ms delay (about 1/4 second) isn't very noticeable, and without careful attention, the mind can sometimes be tricked into thinking the delay somehow "isn't real." The proof? Testimony of many members (read this thread), and of course: Here's a video of me playing the new test clip below.
This problem is well known and is often referred to as a "video sync" or "lip sync" problem. All seem to describe this problem in which the audio ends up getting significantly delayed.
STATUS
A list summarizing the current understanding of the situation.
1. The audio lag is up to 250ms (100-250ms) for ANY a/v stream. Please understand that the duration of 250ms is 1/4 of a single second; in some slow scenes (or even slow speech), this problem is very difficult to detect. However, in any very fast scenes or speech, it should become strikingly and painfully apparent to even the most callous of observers.
2. It does appear that a minority of HD2 users insist they are completely unaffected by the problem, and they are very vocal about it. This does introduce the possibility that, in fact, contrary to all common sense, there may be differences in HD2 hardware that are quite elusive. Alternatively, there is some yet-undiscovered combination of settings, roms, and drivers in which this problem disappears. More likely in many cases is the possibility that the issue is simply difficult to spot in some people's chosen sample footage.
3. HTC has acknowledged the problem in some form but is doing nothing about it, either because of development cost (software issue) or hardware issues. Again, there is also the possibility that there are other factors tying the company's hands.
4. In theoretical terms, the class 2 SD card read speed is more than sufficient to maintain sustained data flow of, for instance, a 300kbps audio/video stream. However, the delay issue persists even with the smallest of encodes, and even when the files are placed in the phone's built-in memory.
5. The Snapdragon chipset itself has been repeatedly implicated as being the culprit behind the A/V delay. Other potential candidates include driver issues, ROM issues, and/or general software issues on the part of HTC.
6. It is absolutely not a codec issue. This is not speculation or conjecture, but certainty. There is an overwhelming amount of evidence to support this, including the use of different players and encoders that produce valid streams--which play back perfectly in sync on any other computer or device. If there is any software you are using that you claim "doesn't get lag," you either do not experience lag/delay issues on your device, or the software is introducing opposite audio delay to compensate, which isn't a solution at all. The latter is known to occur with some community-produced frontends specifically for the HD2 as a crude workaround for this issue. However, it is hardly necessary to stress that the dilemma of not only re-encoding every existing media file for the HD2, but also the obvious lunacy of producing invalid files specifically so this device can read them.
7. The issue is ROM-independent. Cooked and stocked ROMs produce identical results. However, some users report a slight decrease in delay when they disable processor scaling (i.e. lock the device near 1ghz).
WHAT YOU CAN DO
First, decisively determine whether or not your device has this problem, which a large number of HD2 units seem to have. To test this, play this video (or others mentioned in this thread) on your HD2 in Windows Media Player or the HTC Video Player. Also try the included Transformers movie if you have a TMOUS unit. If you have any other media players on the device, you may also play these clips in those players with default settings. Note that all of these files are properly encoded and exhibit no audio lag when played using a computer or other device (including the original HTC HD). Report your findings, along with your OS version, ROM version, radio version, and model of HD2 (i.e. TMOUS or "European"). Also indicate your purchase date or, if known, the date of manufacture.
Secondly, once you've confirmed you have the issue, contact HTC and issue a report/complaint (in other words, request that they fix the problem). To support your complaint, you may refer to some of the ticket numbers at the bottom of this post, which are relevant to this issue. Once your complaint is filed, post the complaint ticket number here. It is crucial that HTC understands the prevalence of this problem or they will not fix it.
Finally, propose a solution (optional). If you manage to change device settings or install software/drivers/tweaks to eliminate the issue device-wide without destroying the file's actual synchronization (i.e. it remains in sync on the computer, other devices, etc), please post what you did! Please, no touting random 3rd party "converters" unless you understand the approach used by these to escape this sync/lag issue.

Another test video. This was the default test clip until I replaced it with my own above.
Sorry, George, its not everybody's doesn't do it. Seriously, no matter what you may think of my mind, etc. mine doesn't seem to do it.
I'm not trying to say the problem is non-existent, you might be right. I didn't investigate enough.
But to give my 2 cents; I am very familiar with video encoding, digital audio and video and everything related. On a PC or on a TV i have an eagles eye (ear) for spotting sync problems. But I haven't noticed a sync problem on my HD2 whatsoever after having watched several movies on it... and 250ms should be very, VERY noticeable. Just 20ms usually catches my attention right away.

I'm also very familiar with encoding. I also notice stuttering problems in the video I play, in addition to sync issues (even baseline AVC with 1 ref, bitrate capped at 1000kbps, LC-AAC audio at 64kbps). This problem was even present on the included Transformers movies (the same movies play fine on the PC-- but with the exact same sync issue on coreplayer and TCPMP on the HD2).
Do you have the TMOUS device? What radio and ROM version are you using?
One other interesting thing I noticed. When the volume is turned down to 0, the choppiness present in some videos or situations dissappears, and when the audio is turned back up the choppiness comes back (tried in HTC Media Player).
This might relate directly to the sync issues I'm experiencing. What if there's a problem with the audio module or chipset rendering in general?
Change your thread title. its misleading. just because your device and someones friends first cousin sisters ex boyfriend suffer from this delay doesnt mean that ALL HD2s are affected. and to claim that all apps are affected? do you have all apps that are out there? kind of farfetched to say its a widespread occurence when this is the first time anyone has claimed such a "MAJOR FLAW!!!"

Changed; happy yet? And I'm not so sure it's as "misleading" as you think. I've seen more with the issues than without. If it occurs on all the included videos and apps, I think it's safe enough to say it's a problem with all of them.
If you don't think your device has it, feel free to post to the contrary. It would help to specify what version of the device you're using.
Based on the responses I'm getting, the problem seems constrained to the new 1024 Leo units (the TMOUS devices). If you have such a device and don't have this problem, I (and many others here who complain about the sync--it's not just me) would love to know about it.
A little less arrogance, please.
no audio issues here either... TMOUS stock using CorePlayer in GDI
To OP
I have TMOUS hd2 with stock rom, since I read this thread, I watched Transformers couple times using built-in player and Core player, but I did not notice any audio lag.
You said 250ms audio lag, what programs you used to measure this number, how you measure audio lag in game? Karaoke game?
Thanks
The lag is measured qualitatively; I adjust the skew until I find that there is no more lip sync issues on the video files (basically I change the delay until the audio matches exactly with what's being shown). Then I observe that this audio delay is the same in all videos (including the stock). Then I notice that games are a bit delayed; since the 250ms appears to hold for all of the videos I've tried (the audio delay was set by an mp4 container flag), I simply assumed that the lag that is observable in games is the same; it appears to be the same magnitude, at least.
I noticed it in the Transformer movie as well. (This is probably the first time I played it and paid attention.)
TCPMP can't handle the Transformers movies. I can't notice any lag while playing another video file I had on my sd card. The quality is much lower, compared to Transformers.

See second post on in this page.
TCPMP solved my problems (Audio sync in videos, I don't have any delay at all in apps etc though).

TCPMP runs 2.5 - 3 hour action films fine for me.
I've experienced no audio sync issues in the couple included games I've played with (all but Prince of Persia) nor any in the videos I've played (both Transformers and a couple other mp4's I've encoded with CloneDVDMobile). I'm not a big fan of games on these though, but the video capabilities have been THOROUGHLY tested on my unit. Oh, and all of this has been played from the supplied 16GB card and two 8GB cards (both made by Kingston) which I already had. I've played the videos using both the included "Video Player" and TCPMP (took a little work to get MPEG2s to play decently though).

I have reformatted the memory card and only replaced what I still wanted that was originally on it. I have not hard reset at all.
The only app I have installed which might affect performance is BsB Tweaks, and the only settings I've adjusted are: Power Saving - OFF; Hidden Camera Modes - ON; Camera 8MP - ON; and Wifi N - ON (I was curious about what this does, but it's not something I need.. I'm turning it off now, now that I'm thinking on it).
To those of you experiencing these issues: Are you only seeing this problem with games? Or is it affecting movies too?

I did not say that TCPMP couldn't handle long films. It was very specific to the Transformer movies. More specifically, I meant the exact Transformer movie files that came with the US T-Mobile HD2. TCPMP was not able to play those Transformer movie files smoothly.
However I do notice the audio lag in the default movie player it uses to the Transformers movies. The video is smooth, but the audio is lagged a little.
I am experiencing the exact delay that is being reported.
All you have to do is actually watch a few minutes of Transformers. Its really annoying.

No you just said "The Transformers movies", I have 2 transformer movies & TCPMP plays them both fine. They did not come with the handset like yours though, but they are both high quality of 2.5gb each (Don't know how big the issued ones are, I'm in UK here so we didn't get them).
So maybe it's an issue with the way they were encoded too as well as a hardware issue.
i don't have such an issue with mine... games and movies play fine... maybe you have slower ear sensors or faster vision lol .... and I am curious why do you advertise this in your signature?????? if you were writing in a sports forum and had some disability, would you write that down in your signature as well??
i have this same problem. I loaded my favorite alert sounds from my previous phone. They all get a half second to a second chopped off. So do my ring tones. I have not seen a fix for this on any board yet. You are not crazy.

It's not actually the first time, there was a thread running for a few days not so long ago about the same issue. And as far as I can ascertain, most, if not all HD2's are plagued with this issue.
I have a TmoUS HD2 and I haven't noticed any delay in sound.

Sound Drop Outs While Tablet is "Off."

Hi Folks:
Is anyone else having this problem?
New Info as of 16 July. Sound Still Skipping
Unfortunately, I'm still having sound file skips when the tablet is off.
I did some more Google research on this, and I found several instances with regard to phones having sound problems with skipping and popping sounds while playing. Nearly all of those seemed to be related to either headphone issues or the Bluetooth xceiver.
I originally though this problem was specific to Overdrive Media console, but it has also turned up in the Music app. I also installed a couple of other music/sound apps to see if it may be app specific, but all of them had the same consistent behavior of the sound file...pausing at random intervals....and then continuing after a few seconds when the screen...was turned off. The skips DO NOT happen when the screen is on.
Going through Erica Rene's thoughts I went into the Running Applications Manager and turned off several services I wasn't using, including Neo Player, 3d Gallery, Skype, and even Music. I initially thought that worked, but I was wrong. Same behavior.
This morning I did a factory reset. No change in behavior.
Since I just started using the tablet for audio books and podcasts I honestly don't know if this problem was there in 3.0. When I did the factory reset I thought the tablet might go back to 3.0, but I was wrong. I am still on build Acer_A500_4.010.08_COM_GEN2 after the factory reset.
There seems to be nothing wrong with my hardware that I can see. These skips happen with the headphones in or out. The only thing that triggers it is turning off the screen.
Insofar as software is concerned, I've not done anything more except rooting the tablet (which survived the factory reset process, which did surprise me! ). Beyond putting in another ROM - which, unless I can get some specific thoughts that it will fix the problem, given my experience level I'm a bit leery of doing - I can't see how software would fix it now.
Is anyone else seeing this???
Thanks!!!!
=============================
I've searched Google and here on XDA for this and not found anything, so I'm hoping that someone can say something.
When I play a sound file on my A500, and then turn it off, the sound continuing to play is a very iffy thing. This works on my Nexus One phone, so I assumed it would work here. On my phone I start a sound file running (music, podcast, audio from an audio book or Google reader) and then I turn the phone "off" to conserve the battery, of course. The sound continues to play.
When I do the same thing on the A500 it is very rare that the sound continues to play. Sometimes it will stop as soon as I turn the tablet off, sometimes it will continue for several seconds and then stop, sometimes it will continue for several seconds and then pause for a couple of seconds and continue in this loop for the life of the file.
I originally thought that this was a specific issue with the audio books in the Overdrive Media Console program, but I've now encountered it with Google Reader and playing things through either Music or Rockplayer Lite.
Has anyone seen this yourself, or does anyone have any thoughts? Details on the tablet are below:
OS: AndroidOS 3.1
Build: Acer_A500_4.010.08_COM_GEN2

Could be some of the apps not playing fair.
Do you have a task killer or any add on management app.they can cause this
Also in settings sounds.there is a check button to control this.
Also do not hit the back button on the apt this will kill it
I had Google music going off when I would hot the power buttonbtobturn off display and it was ina task killer ibaccidently installed something I had on USB drive for my cell.it had a setting to close all apps on display off or sleep.
Erica:
Thank you for your reply. Oddly enough, something along those lines may be it.
I've not modified my tablet much beyond rooting it. I've not uninstalled applications and don't have a custom ROM.
You mentioned that something might not be playing fair. I have no add on management application, nor any task killer I'm aware of. The Applications area of Settings has been doing what I need in that department fine for me. So I went in and looked at what services were running, and specifically turned off the services and programs I know I was not using: Skype, NemoPlayer, PhotoBrowser, Acer Sync. I then tried a sound file, turned off the tablet and it did continue to play steadily.
Now I guess I just have to figure out which program is the culprit, but it seems evident that one of them is.
Along those lines, perhaps you can answer something else for me: Those programs I mentioned above basically started running services on bootup. How do I stop that? I don't use NemoPlayer, for example, and so have no reason to have any service from it starting. I took a look at the Settings->Applications area and don't seem to see anything there that indicates what gets started upon bootup.
Thanks!

I use titanium backup. It has a option to not only backup. But can freeze apps.Im not sure but you might need to have root for this feature.there are other apps on market to freeze them maybe someone can help by telling the app they use.just do not remove any apps Acer put on your tab.
You can get root easky look in Dev area
Put some new information in teh original post.
My sound also cuts out when tablet goes to lock mode. I thought it was certain apps. Removed everything as far as widgets anything running in backround on home screen but I still have the same issue its random. Tried a clean wipe/install basic apps root explorer and still had it happen. I thought it might be a audio codec problem. In Honeycomb 3.0 I was able to play AVIs with AC3 in mobo and nemo player now I cant in 3.1.
HC 3.1
Acer 4.010.02 Gen1
i have the probleme too with the sound when it goes to sleep when i stream webradio !
Just a thought, along similar lines when my screen is off sound will cut out after about 15 to 20 mins. I think for you as others have said you have something else that is causing the problem. For me I think it's just a system timer. Don't know how to fix it.
i have experienced a similar thing with some Roms I've tried and with them it was the built in overclocker that was the culprit. I had to change the profile in the overclocker to enable the playback while the screen was off. Same goes for overclocking apps such as setcpu.
I'm experiencing a skip with my email notification. I recorded a short notice (similar to you got mail) & it does a 5 second pause 1/2 way through. Didn't do it prior to 3.1

[Q] random freezing/crashing when listening to audio

Ever since the Gingerbread update (and subsequent 2 patches) I’ve noticed that my DX will occasionally shut down(?) while listening to audio, it doesn’t matter if it’s streaming or a local file, podcast or music, at some random moment everything stops on my phone and the only way to get it restarted is by pulling/reinserting the battery.
So far it has happened while using Google Listen, Pocket Casts, Pandora, and Winamp
Other audio players where it hasn’t happened it is Google Music (both stock and beta), TuneinPro, SoundCloud, and Scanner Radio, though I don’t know if it hasn’t happened on these by design or it’s just that I haven’t used them as much as the ones were the freeze/crash happens.
The reason why I’m not sure if it’s a freeze or a crash is that it seems like theirs is still power, it’s just that nothing is responding, the screen is black, nothing lights up, and pressing and holding the power button does nothing so I get the impression it’s stuck in some strange loop that clears once I pull the battery.
This is my second DX this is happening to, my 1st DX was replaced by Verizon for dead pixels so this doesn't seem to be related to just a bad phone.
Is anyone else having this problem? Any suggestions of a resolution?
I have had similar issues a well, maybe happens once a week though. Mainly when I have my cassette adapter running and doing other things at the same time. Haven't gotten too bad to try repairing it yet though.

Only time I ever had an issue like this was one of 2 things happened... either the phone overheated, or I ran the memory out... do you use a task killer? I personally like using a task killer, even though they say GB automatically shuts down background apps when needed, I always found my phone faster and more responsive using a task killer. Just a preference but TaskXP for multitasking works very well for me and it is free on the market. If you have any questions about setting it up you can pm me.
On another note... if you are using so many apps to listen to audio, I'm assuming you probably have it hooked up in your car, maybe on a dash mount... check and see how warm your phone gets, as my DX runs pretty warm too, I had to modify my mount to allow for heat dissipation and I never had a problem after that.
SGT+CM7=:-D
I don't use a task killer mostly as you stated because gb is supposed to manage it well enough but also because it doesn't suppress apps so I kept noticing things restarting right after the app killer did it's thing.
actually I mostly get around on motorcycle and I'm not a fan of using headphones while riding. for the most part, when I'm listening to my dx that's all I'm doing with it because I'm usually preoccupied with something else at the same time.
So in short, when it crashes it's when it's only playing audio
Good suggestions though since I didn't cover what I was doing when it crashes

I'm sure there is more than one issue that could lead to the unexpected reboots, so I doubt there is any easy and universal panacea, much as I wish there were. Factory resets haven't worked for me on either of my 2 DX's, and I can guarantee that overheating is not relevant on mine. It comes and goes, and I thought that perhaps I had it beat, but it's still there.
I've been through a number of SBF's, cache clearing, data clearing, factory data resets, etc., app removals with no resolution. It's most prone to spontaneous reboots while running audio apps, or navigating with Google Maps.
I am not too familiar with some of the acronyms used here but I am having the same problem. The reboots started to happen after I downloaded the latet OS update code. So far Verizon has been unable to help me fix the problem,. I will be going back to Verizon today and will update you with the outcome. So far Verizon has not been all that helpful.
Verizon reloaded the OS yesterday. I will know if that cured the problem after I do an hour on the bike this morning in the gym.
Same issue
I'm having the same issue; it happens when using Google Listen or Audible, more frequently with the latter. I've noticed the problem happens most frequently when I hit the power button to turn off the screen; about a half-second after the screen turns off, the phone crashes. Sometimes it reboots itself, but most of the time I have to remove the battery and then turn it back on. This happens only when listening to audio, and it doesn't matter whether it's through the audio jack, Bluetooth or the speaker. I've formatted the SD card and done multiple hard resets, but the problem continues.
I noticed that my DroidX only seems to do it when the screen is off. As far as I can tell if you keep the screen on it should not crash.
Nobody seems to know what to do about it. Verizon knows about it but Motorola seems to be clueless. Their crappy tech support only said it was a problem with the phone, but didn't know if it was a hardware or software bug. I have has the issue across 2 Droid X devices so I figure it is more likely just Motorolas crappy software.
I have installed the latest revnumbers daily build and it hasn't conked out yet.
Verizon is of course happy to keep swapping them out under extended warranty coverage at no cost. Not that it actually helps much.

Sound lags during music playback

Hi guys. I got myself a 32gb, wifi only version of N7. Upgraded it instantly to 4.2.2 . Nothing to complain about in the first 2 days.
After that, I noticed that, when I play music (stream through upnp on local network or play mp3 / flac files on local storage - tested several players, bsplayer, google player, poweramp...), and do some other stuff on the tablet at the same time - surf, or just 'click around', or swipe through my documents - occassionally I experience short sound dropouts, like the I/O-load would be too high or something. Please note this isn't bluetooth thing some people experienced, I use regular phones. It happens sometimes when I do some trivial stuff...noticed it all over the place, while starting an app, surfing, writing something in the Google search window, searching people on FB, opening a browser (empty) tab, even clicking on application button to see the list. It can be really anything, it doesn't happen a lot but it's there.
I googled the problem but couldn't find anyone with similar issues. Read on the other hand a lot about general performance issues of the Nexus 7 after 4.2.2 upgrade, about (visual) lag, so I figured, even though my eye didn't catch that on my device (this is my first experience with 4.x.x so it looked fast and smooth enough to me), I decided to revert to 4.1.2 and see whether there would be any difference. I can't say I could see/hear improvement, maybe a slight one, but I still get to experience occassional chops in my music, which is very annoying, this should be ridiculously easy for a 4-core processor to accomplish. It's unacceptable. I even checked that CPU wasnt overloaded when these chops occured (in fact, it was only around 25%-30% when the chops occured, perhaps the peaks were too short for program to register them - I dunno)...
I also tried everything people suggested here regarding general performance issues, disabling this and that, Currents, factory resets, cleaning cache partition...you name it. Nada.
Anybody experienced similar thing? Don't know if I have faulty unit or if this is bug in software (Samsung Galaxy S3 had a similar thing when it got out, even though the sound pops were of different nature and occured under different circumstances - took several software upgrades until it got fixed)...I'm thinking of returning it and go for iPad mini or something.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
The results of this have varied but there are some who attest that this works.
Have you disabled auto-sync in Google Currents (Blue Circle Icon)?
If not, try that; this has worked for me.
Open up "Google Currents" Hit the 3 dots on the top right -> Settings -> Scroll down and UNCHECK "Enable background sync"
Remember these results have varied, but it fixed the issue with my tablet. Also I heard there were some issues (although if someone can confirm them further for us--that'd be appreciated!) with the RAM in many Nexus 7s so stressing out the ram and filling up your SDcard to the max will cause it to have stutter issues too.
Hi and thanks for the suggestion,
Disabling the background sync in Google Currents was actually the first thing I did. I believe I tried out everything that was suggested so far on the net regarding the general performance issues. I used Forever Gone app to fill up all space and then delete it, I wiped the cache partition in bootloader mode, I even did a factory reset, and eventually I re-flashed it back to 4.1.2 (it did improve then but the music lag / pops were still not entirely gone). SD-card space-thing cannot be the issue either as I have like 23gigs free.
Now I even noticed that video playback is effected by occasional sound pops. When I play video in full screen, not doing anything else, it still happens. Rarely but it does happen.

Returned it and took money back. Will look for other options soon. This thing was too 'beta' for me.

Randomly low performance?

Hey I just got my Z4. Upgraded from a Z2 Play. I bought direct from Motorola off their website. I'm having really strange 2D performance issues, and was wondering if anyone else is having similar issues because they seem outright stupid for a phone as beefy as this one is to be doing this.
OK, so, this is going to sound super vague because I did try to nail it down with a ctrace, but wasn't able to come up with anything conclusive.
Sometimes, when drawing 2D only, my phone will drop to 30fps or lower. This happens in both in the launcher/normal apps and games (Fire Emblem Heroes)
However, when the phone is drawing in 3D (Dragalia Lost) the phone never drops below 60fps, ever, for any reason.
I have tried the developer option to force 2D Drawing on the GPU. This does not change the behavior at all.
This happens regardless of what MotoMod I have attached (None, Car Dock, Projector, 360 Camera)
This seems really weird to me. The phone isn't getting hot. It happens both plugged in and unplugged. Fresh reboots and not. What's interesting about this is it's exactly the opposite of my Z2 Play, which Dragalia F***ing hated (It would run fine for anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes, and then it would crash) but FEH would run fine on, and never ever have issues, ever, even if the phone hadn't been rebooted in like, 3 months. And the Z2 Play is just generally a weaker, crappier device in every way (Except Ram, I had the 64gb/4gb model of the Z2 Play) than the Z4, I kind of "expect" the Z4 to just do everything the Z2 did but better.
I'm not a particularly heavy user (I upgraded from my Z2 Play because the battery was expanding, not because it was insufficient) and both of the games mentioned are the only things I do on my phone that could be considered to "Push" the phone in any way (Push in quotes because Dragalia and FEH are both REALLY light games.)
Has anyone else noticed any strangeness like this?
I have the same issue, and yes, it's really hard to describe and difficult to determine what causes it.
What it actually looks like to me is that the digitizer randomly goes into a powersaving mode and samples input at a lower frequency. When scrolling through any app, if you hold your finger down, it'll make it look like it's running at 30fps or less. But if you fling a page that can scroll, for the most part the scrolling animation will be full 60fps.
I know for certain that if you reboot the phone, you're more likely to trigger it soon after boot. But, if you suffer through the agonizing experience, the phone will eventually fix itself for the next week or so before it happens again.
Here's the weird part, not everyone is affected by the weird performance. My theory is most people can't detect it or don't care, or there's a particular app that is prompting the digitizer to behave badly. No idea what it is though.

It's definitely not the digitizer though! I have some data! Fire Emblem Heroes has an autobattle mode, This is as likely to happen during an autobattle when I am providing no input (Phone sitting on desk/just watching while holding) as it is when I'm scrolling through my list of apps.
Same problem here, pretty sluggish experience compared to my girlfriend's G7 Plus.
I've noticed that since the latest update, this issue has gone away for me. Anyone else confirm?
I don't think it was the update, but certain apps seem to exaggerate performance issues. I fixed mine by marking Pokemon Go (the only 3d game I play), as "Restricted" under battery usage settings.
I've been testing this configuration for about 2 days now and it looks like that solved it.
Just to set the record straight, the Android 10 update fixed the random performance problems that have plagued the device so far. There is some hitching right after a reboot, but if you let the phone settle, it's fine until the next reboot.
