basically i want to know if you use windows, mac, or linux, and why you use that OS, and also how many people have yet to root their phone because it seems too complicated. i am currently working on a script runable in linux and soon to be runable in windows that will automatically root your phone for you. all you will need to do is run the command, hit enter a few times, set up a setting in anycut(which will be installed on the phone after flashing to RC29) and walk away, or you can sit there and stare at it if you want.
but since i know there are those three main OS's i wanted to know if i should continue trying to get this automated and running in all three operating systems.
I use all of the above so I can't vote. And technically if you own an Android phone you're using Linux.

Well which do you use to do work on your phone? And I know by using android you are using linux which is why I made sure to say "on your main computer" I use linux to work on my phones, but I can use windows on my friend's comp

Lately I've been using Windows 7 since I'm giving it a go to see if I want to return to Windows or not after the Vista blunder.
Honestly though I'd make an OS independent way of doing it to simplify it. Like make it in Java, Python, or in Mono so it'll be one app for all 3 OS's.

because up until recently if you were to try and get ahold of a copy of XP an older and "obsolete" operating system they charged nuch more than they charged you for a copy of the crappy vista that the deemed perfect. the company will do anything to make more money than they chould be making, they overcharge for everything and quite frankly i would rag on mac too but it has been a long time since i touched a mac. these days i don't pay for a thing when it comes to my computer software, if there is not a free alternative then i don't need the program. software companies charge an arm and a leg for their software and then they whine and cry that people are pirating it. take a look at photoshop. over 60% of the copies of photoshop that are installed on computers nationwide are pirated copies, and is it any wonder? adobe wants to charge nearly $900 for a piece of intangible software, i'll stick with gimp
I've got an old iMac I still use (OS 9.2), and my main pc is quad boot (XP Pro, Vista, 7, and Unbuntu), and my netbook is dual boot from the hard drive (XP Pro & Vista) and I've got persistant install of Ubuntu on an sdhc card, and a live install of GOS on an sd card.
So I think there should be an option of "All of the above".

Laptop: Currently XP, switching to Ubuntu or some other linux flavor this weekend.
I primarily use Windows because i'm more of a PC Gamer than console. I'd most likely switch completely to Linux >IF< the game industry went full throtle into Linux development. Not talking about a Windows Emulator on linux to run windows games, but coding games natively for Linux.
I think this is a great Idea. I've rooted my phone to get themes and auto-rotation and the updated APN Radio stuff on it. Showed it to some of my friends and they want to root as well, but want me to do it for them cause they are nervous. I tried explaining that if they just follow the step by step instructions, they will be fine. So this will certainly make things easier for them.

I use Vista mainly because Its not that bad despite some of its problems. A few registry tweaks, scratch that a LOT of registry tweaks go a long way Looking forward to windows 7! I like the freedom with Linux but I don't have the time needed to tinker with it and its a hassle. Hackintosh was alright when I used it, mac os is meh. mac hardware is sexy though. Gimme hardware and keep your OS apple ^^

i rooted to JF 1.42 RC33 but i fumbled my way through...i'm sure anyone with equal or lower "skillz" as me would greatly appreciate the automated root.

Heh, I'm the opposite. Mac hardware only looks good, but underneath its poorly put together and the designs are flawed. I can build a decent looking hackintosh that looks just as good. The OS, however, has a lot of potential assuming Apple allows people to customize their experience without hacking the OS to install a theme and stops locking it into their crappy hardware setup. After all its a heavily commercialized BSD hybrid that makes some things much easier.

I take it what you're doing doesn't work with MONO (it supports up to C# 3.0)? I know people who do C# development work on Mac OS X thanks to MONO.
It cannot be categorized into one vote I need two.
Yeah I know it sucks but I have to have at least one machine with Windows because I am a gamer and until the day that Linux has the same level of 3D application/Gaming support I will always need windows.
Though for everything else I'm either testing the Kubuntu 9.04 Alpha or using Kubuntu 8.10.
I use Mac and the only thing I haven't been able to do with it is format my sd to EXT2, so I end up using my Vista In Parallels. Now, Does anybody knows why in my Mac shows ext2 as one of the format options but doesn't seems to work right

Windows xp gets used once in a blue moon to play a game. Most of the main windows applications I used can be run in wine these days. Everything else is vastly easier to do in linux.
I run XP at work, and Tri-boot of Vista/Win7/Ubuntu at home.
I would have thought that if you can't understand how to root your G1...you really don't need to root it in the first place??
I run almost exclusively Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 on at least 5 machines (6 if you count the ps3 in). I run no dual boot but I have XP post SP3 in Virtualbox on my main machine for my bank but I will solve that later as the bank officially now supports Ubuntu but my current certificate is incompatible.
I run Ubuntu because I don't get any problem with viruses, trojans, malware, spyware and clogged registry. I also run Ubuntu because almost everything can be done from the command line. You can mod almost all parts of Ubuntu including Linux. It's free and I can make the modifications I want to the source code. Some applications and drivers are proprietary which can be a pain but that's how the current state is and usually you don't need so many proprietary parts. There are many free apps available via apt-get, both using official repository, ppa:s and external repositories. I find Linux distributions more modular than Windows. There's less problem with unsupported old hardware like in newer editions of Windows. Canon and HP skipped Vista support for both our scanner and printer. Only the basic features of the printer worked. In Ubuntu I get a lot more information from the printer with CUPS than with Vista and the inbuilt driver. The scanner was impossible to make work on x64 Vista. x86 worked but it was an ugly driver hack with the old xp driver and not optimal. Most hardware drivers for old components are built in into Linux.
I've tried Vista many times and it has not met my expectations of a good OS. My latest TX tablet crashed while I finished the configuration and went to burn the recovery discs. I tested ram and the harddrive and there were no problems. After running Ubuntu on that machine for quite a while I consider it stable. My previous TX computer had similar problems. The lack of drivers for old hardware, the lack of a good CLI and the need for all the protection makes me look elsewhere. Windows 7 is looking a lot better but It's far from what I want to use. I tried powershell and I just wanted to get out of there quickly. I've used MAC OSX including 10.1, 10.4 and 10.5 and I like it a lot. Unfortunately as you may have understood OSX is exclusively made for MAC:s. It runs on many x86/x86_64 pc:s but often there is always something not running properly.
If Apple would make OSX available for PC:s with BIOS (which they most likely won't because then they wouldn't sell as many MAC:s) I would use it. The Ubuntu GUI is good if you change the theme but Aqua on OSX is much better.
I think we are heading more towards cloud based OS:S / webOS:s /online-OS:s.

Apparently the next version of Windows will be able to run on ARM processors such as the Tegra 2 in the Vega. I doubt it'll end up on the Vega, though someone might port it over.

I would be very surprised if windows will ever come to our vegas. Memory i would say is the main issue, xp would be the only one able to run with 512mb of ram, and that has poor touch screen support. I am running windows 7 with 1gb of ram (min system req) on my laptop, and it runs very slow. As far as i am aware even the netbook version needs 1gb. Be happy with android.
I wasn't really talking about windows 7 (although i would like that) but windows CE or windows mobile.

Won't ever happen, windosws mobile is all closed source. Android is much better anyway, just get used to it
Agreed, winmob on the vega prob wont occour.
I too, miss some great apps and games which doubtfully will ever appear on andriod. The android gaming community, seems a little shallower than the wince lot.
I stll keep my htc touch and diamnd 2 specifically because of this.

i think if we can get android 3.0 (or whatever the numbers will be) on our vega's, its more then enough to have enough fun with it, an operating system that does not thing its a smartphone and optimized for tablets. i used many android smartphones before, but using even 2.2 on vega is more fun then any smartphone i think, at least you can read web sites and not harm your eyes
PS : i have a joojoo tablet too, which runs win7 and i think android is better and faster on a tablet like vega ( tegra2 tabets).
Some of the cheap import tablets like the Zenithink ZT-180 have roms for WinCE - but from what I have read nobody really uses them since even WinCE is pretty poor as a tablet OS (well, that and the ZT-180 is pretty rubbish!).
as a student you can get the windows embedded 7 development kit for free, that should be able to run on the advent vega but my knowledge isnt yet sufficient to build and deploy a rom in order t test it

What about office tools? i have yet to find a decent word processor that retains all (or most) of word's features.
sadly, while gdocs looks lovely, writing documents is still a pain..
Although I also wish that I could do some serious work on my tablet / smartphone, you simply can not do it (too small screen => primarily wasn't meant for this kind of job, but it's great in mobility and therefore "valuable information on the go").
Tablets & smartphones are used to consume / present information and PCs / workstations are used to generate that information.
I have also tried all kind of Office software (QuickOffice HD, Polaris Office, Docs To Go, GDocs,...), but reality is that generating information on Android is 30-50% slower than on a 20" monitor with keyboard & mouse hooked on a PC.
Yes, you could make a new office software on Android that would need a keyboard, mouse & external monitor, but that would defeat the purpose of mobility.
And sadly there is no such good software on Android with so many funtionalities that are found in Microsoft Office.
IMHO you can do up to 30 minutes of work without problems, for anything above that, please do yourself a favor and use a PC.

Yani, its a good app, have you tried? I will use this all the time when I use my Vega during work. I find the windows apps quite poor on Android (I uses docs to go). This is great for reading and creating basic files. There are a few problems I have found so far.
1. The UI is not really designed for touch screen, I used with my docking station, keyboard and mouse but still was hard to click on the right part due to the alignment being off slightly on the mouse pointer.
2. Docs saved to the virtual desktop can be downloaded from a site called files.onlive.com. However when you try to access this site it says 'only available in USA'. So might be a nightmare to get off what you have created.
What do you think?

I use QuickOffice for documents, but I only view documents, and these android office apps aren't even good at that!

1. I think you need to restart your OnLive desktop in order to fully accept your mouse&keyboard input.
2. I went to https://desktop.onlive.com/account/myfiles and uploaded a doc file and then redownloaded it without a problem. I'm from Slovenia - EU and I've used Firefox on a PC with Ubuntu/Linux OS.

When I shopped around for a tablet, the last thing that came to my mind was a tablet with OS Windows, however after using android tablet, I feel a tablet with windows is much better as we have software to go with it. I am a trader, I need multi profile sharing, video support, document editors, pdf to word convertors and other related apps to be mobile friendly. I'll give you an advice. Sell your tablet and pack your bags. You are not cut out for installing even a custom rom.
Windows runs so far only on x64-x86 CPUs which are a totally different architecture from ARM.
Apps are incompatible among these two architectures. Windows 8 will run on ARM(yes iconia and all other tablets are ARM) but no previous apps will work unless built from scratch, on Windows 8 ARM edition.

If you need Window$ (and I completely understand why you might) take a look at the existing windows tablets. Fujitsu just came out with a new slate form tablet that might fit your needs.

Sorry, I am just an end user not developer. I got no time for understanding software archetecture. As a user the equipment and sofware must support my needs. I can't connect to a Ad hoc connection, I cannot have multi profiles, equipment has 2 cameras but I cant use msn or yahoo to video call, the usb drive is just a socket for thumb drive. I can't get a mobile tethering via USB. Ms office cannot be installed, FAX applications don't work, not all bluetooth printers work. What more .... we spend money to make our business easy not end up installing ROM. Tabkets are ment to be laptop replacements and business friendly.
cool the fujitsu tablet looks real cool. I need to see if I can get a trade in with a top up on this iconia. I also saw the HP slate looks good as well.

There's your problem!
Tablets are not supposed to be laptop replacements. They are a different class of device entirely.
For some people, it is possible that a tablet can effectively replace a laptop, but it very much depends how you actually use a laptop in the first place. If you use your laptop for email, internet, and maybe some light games, then yes a tablet can replace it. Otherwise, a tablet is likely to be a companion device to another computer (e.g. a desktop or laptop).
In addition, "business friendly" doesn't mean suitable for all business applications. It just means, in my experience at least, that the device can be used for certain business functions, e.g. exchange support, VPN, remote desktop, Citrix etc.

You can't install win7, you will need to purchase a new one. If you want to stick with Acer they have a w500 (w for windows, like a500 is a for android). But there a number of other windows tablets out there. But if you are needing heavy windows use and portability, might I recommend a netbook

1. What true business person has to resort to ad-hoc networks? Did you not realize the A500 is wifi only and doesn't have a 3G feature?
2. Why would you need multiple profiles? Are you sharing the tablet with others? A tablet is pretty much considered to be a one-person device like a phone.
3. There are multi-platform video conferencing apps that work. Of course Microsoft and Yahoo apps might not -- this is a Google device. Microsoft apps don't typically function on Apple devices either.
4. So far I use my USB port for card readers, thumbdrives, connecting my digital camera, keyboard, and mouse. This functionality will improve even more with the v3.1 update released within weeks.
5. There are 1/2 dozen Office compatible app suites available for Android. I don't think you would want to install a full version of Office on a mobile device with limited memory/storage.
6. There are plenty of modern and secure alternatives to the 1980's technology of faxing. That being said, there are numerous internet based FAX services that work perfectly with the A500.
7. Printers require drivers, and those come from the printer manufacturer. If they do not produce drivers for Android then you cannot print directly to those printers. However, there are apps that can satisfy your printing requirements. Again, paper and printed documents are becoming a thing of the past. Most industries have moved to digital.
My advice to you is to have your company's IT department set up some sort of RAS/Citrix type system that allows you to use your tablet (whether Android, Windows, or Apple) to connect to a full Windows computer over the internet and run all your standard Windows business apps and functions from there. Otherwise, a tablet (any/all tablets) just simply is not the device for you.

Tablets are not meant to replace laptops, whoever told you that does not know what they're talking about, Tablets are more entertainment oriented rather than business.

Not just probably: Win8 will ship in x86-64 and ARM-compatible versions. However, that still won't help OP much since it still cannot run x86 applications. OP would still have to wait for all his applications to be ported over to Silverlight and/or ARM versions.
As to the OP himself: you bought a tablet device in order to do business with it, meaning your income is atleast partially dependent on it, yet you didn't bother to do any kind of research on if it will evenbe suitable to such? Tough luck but you brought this on yourself. And as for running Win7 on a tablet device without a physical keyboard and mouse: forget it. It works, but only barely. Get a laptop.

DuOS-M is commercial software developed by American Megatrends for Intel x86-based computers using the Microsoft Windows operating system to provide a "dual operating system" environment in which the user can simultaneously deploy the Android operating system in tandem with Microsoft Windows.
DuOS-M supports key hardware peripherals in Windows including cameras, audio, microphone and sensors such as ambient light sensor, accelerometer, gyrometer, compass and orientation sensors. I'm surprised there's no discussion on this in xda developers, so I thought I'd start one.
Personal experiences :
I wanted to find an alternative to Andy and Genymotion which rely on VirtualBox since the VirtualBox's ndis filter drivers make my Windows 8.1 desktop regularly bluescreen. There's also Bluestacks but that always seemed to run poorly on even powerful computers.
DuOS-M is based on Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean). They've stated they have no slated support for KitKat since they don't see it as a significant upgrade, but are looking into Android-L support. It comes pre-installed with the Amazon Marketplace. It can run both native x86 android apps and ARM apps out of the box. After installation it takes you to a page that explains how to easily install the Google Play Store / Services:

If you scroll down on the above link it also has instructions how to root your installation, which is dead simple.
I really like how Google Play, ARM Support, and Root support are all baked into the process.
Unfortunately I was unable to run this on my Windows 8.1 Enterprise edition desktop since it's running the Hyper-V role which DuOS-M doesn't support (shows a warning on startup that virtualization isn't enabled and then hangs when you OK the warning). I could disable Hyper-V (via removing the role or adding a boot flag option with Hyper-V disabled) but I develop too often with Windows Phone 8 to do that right now.
I next tested it on my ASUS VivoBook 11.6" (1366x768) Touchscreen Laptop which has a Celeron 1007U Dual Core CPU and 4GB memory running Windows 8.1. It runs surprisingly well, better than Genymotion in most cases. It's not perfect, Word With Friends for instance has weird missing textures. But it has been able to run things I've never gotten to work in Genymotion or Bluestacks, such as video streaming in Qloud Media player. Since this is a touch screen laptop all gestures and touch controls seems to work great, in addition to the keyboard/mouse controls. I like how DuOS-M doesn't install a new virtual network card on the host machine and seems to support Internet access transparently.
They recently just released a 32-bit beta version which I'm eager to try on my Dell Venue 8 Pro 8" Windows tablet. At $9.99 I'll probably purchase a copy before my 30-days are up. I'm curious to hear other people's thoughts on DuOS-M. Hopefully with more users/feedback they can continue improving this great Android virtualization alternative.
I've recently purchased DuOS-M.
Compared with Bluestacks, DuOS is a Ferrari. I'm using it on a Lenovo Yoga and i'm very impressed.
My Lenovo has a mobile core i5 processor but this is no problem at all.
All apps and games are running without lag. I did see some glitches but nothing serious.
Overall i'm very pleased with DuOS-M.
It would be nice to see what happens if XDA modders and cookers shine a light on this one!

DuOS will not launch in Full screen when the System RAM is less than 3GB, even though full screen is set in Configuration tool or 0 is set in xml configuration file.
This is known issue and this will be fixed in future release.
Seems like the latest update has fixed the fullscreen issue! Runs quite well on my Asus T100.

Does DuOS have a Lollipop image yet ?
Just wondering if anyone found a way around the syscheck (in particular, the 1GB ram). I'm running this on my Surface Pro and it blows Bluestacks out of the water. So I was thinking of running it on an HP Stream 7, a cheapo Windows tablet, but it only has 1GB ram. Getting a "Unfortunately you do not have enough memory to install DuOS-m." error.

Fun fact: This version uses a custom build of VirtualBox. If you dig around, you can find the VHD files and VM config.
Unfortunately, without some reverse engineering, you can't just mount the disks in a VBox VM and go, there's some local host-only networking going on that I'm assuming helps authenticate to the licensing server or something, because trying to launch it gets it stuck after initializing the network interfaces (probably waiting for UDP packets).
Since the virtual nics are in NAT mode, I'm assuming that's why your PC isn't bluescreening, since NAT networking doesn't actually hook your interfaces but is translated from within the VBox software.
I am curious as to how this will work if I install VirtualBox side-by-side.... (it's currently on a separate vanilla test machine).
DuOS is really great, i just installed it and fell in love with straight away. but Has any one tried windroye, it seems to perform well and also has a mobile companion... I'm using it in high end machine so cant really tell the difference. so anyone who tried can you share your opinion ?

Do you mean using integrated graphics? If so, yes. Works perfectly with my built in graphics card on my laptop.

well, it may be possible to get windows 10 RT on the SATV with TONS of modding and somehow managing to get microsoft and nvidia to ok it, but IMHO , this won't happen any time soon without virtualization which means really slow ... painfully slow use.

The majority of the reason for the issues with your question have to do with the fact that the nvidia shield android tv is in fact due to it not having an x86 CPU
Windows RT runs on ARM processors.

its not completely impossible but it wont run very well (though it may be somewhat usable after waiting forever for it to boot).
you can use an x86 emulator like Bochs and then install windows but there hasn't been a lot of success with a very usable install, and I haven't heard of windows 10 working but I have heard of success with windows 8.
obviously the older windows versions have the most success, windows xp being the most popular but windows 95 obviously running better because of the low resources needed.

you may want a full android install before trying it, and obviously a keyboard and mouse.
Windows 8 RT does support ARM but is not open source so porting it to this hardware without Microsoft would be problematic to say the least.
on top of that Microsoft dropped support for Windows RT once the Atom chip was released and they found that they could just use full x86 windows installs.
on a side note, I know its not really what you asked but if a desktop replacement is what your looking for you might try linux: link here
or a full android install (I use android exclusively for home and work successfully myself with no access at home to another OS)
