I am running rooted 1.4.1 and find it little bit slow Is there a way to overclock 1.4.1 yet without going to CM or other roms? I looked at dalingrin's kernel but it was last updated in September.
I'm looking for this answer too. I got spoiled on 1.3 running at 1Ghz and now it seems so sloooow.
I was able to get Dalingrin's OC'ed 1.3 kernel working on my rooted 1.4.1 install. Everything, with the exception of APPS2SD, seemed to work. We discussed it starting with PuterGeek's post 1631 in this thread. It ran at 1.2G well.
I did get the the occasional long hangs, usually with the sync icon going, and reboot, but I am not sure if this was related to the new kernel, or just general 1.4.1. root weirdness and running non-B&N apps on it. It did not seem to like having 500+ epubs loaded at times.
For all that, 1.4.1 started eating battery while idle at night, and there was no way to troubleshoot it. That was the last straw, so I put CM 7.2 RC0 Mirage over it. Unless you're really committed to B&N content (enhanced ebooks, magazines, newspapers), you may find 1.4.1 more work than it's worth.
That's interesting... I haven't had any problems with 1.4.1 nooted and it's actually much better than my 1.3 experience, since the read button now works again, as well as the full android market instead of just a portion of it. Also no crashing or hangs so far (keeping fingers crossed).
I'm not committed to B&N specific content except I do buy some eBooks from them. Although I guess I could just use the nook reader app running on CM, right?

Well I went ahead and installed the 1.2OC Dalingren along with NC Tweaks. Then i ran Quadrant on it and get scores in the 1900 range. Things seem to work so far, but I'll have to see over time.
One problem I had previously with overclocking it was if the lowest step was set too low (like 300) then sometimes it wouldn't wake from sleep.

For comparison, I'm getting a Quadrant score of 2500 on a first run on my NOOKcolor running CM 7.2RC0 Mirage at 1.2GHz. Quadrant isn't the most reliable benchmark out there, but after running rooted 1.4.1 for a few weeks, I wasn't exactly stunned with performance.

So, as the title says this is a poll about phone over clocking.
Who's phone is capable of overclocking and who's isn't?
My goal is to find out if there is a way to tell if you can overclock or not based on the phones s/n.
Procedure:
So pick the proper answer on the poll, then if you could please make a post saying whether you can or cannot overclock along with your s/n.
Works
S/N=HTO2SHF05245 B
Doesn't
HT03GHF05302 JV002-00 D
mine does 768..without a hitch.. and doesnt get hot either..will post the sn when i can check my phone.
Example post/my results
I cannot and my serial number is HT03GHF05302 JV002-00 D.
my hero can, yes
I tried several methods of OCing, and finally found one that works for me on another site. I'll PM it to you since I don't know what the rules are on posting links to other sites here.
In short, yes I can, but only using a certain method.

Can you PM me? I'd like to hear about it.
been oc since Toast released his kernel, but I do still get the random fc on incoming calls once or so a week. its annoying but if the call was important they leave a message. The difference in speed is worth it.
OC to 768 with no issues.

D3fault sent me the link and now I can OC up to 710 (768 freezes me). Before he sent me the zip file for the OC stuff I could not run any OC ROM's, no overclock widget, or setcpu. Now I can run overclock widget (LWP flies now) and setcpu. Still can't get all OC'd ROM's to load but it is worlds better than it was.
Lastly, I do get some heat though, oh well.
Here is the link for those who can't get their hero to overclock, try this (courtesy of D3fault, not me). Download and add to your SD, flash, download overclocking program of choice (I really like the OC widget in the market) and done.

I can over clock, have been overclocked and remained on for over a day now. Battery temperature is 24.7 and thats under constant texting and web-browsing throughout the day. Ive downloaded a couple apps as well.

Ummm, why do you want my S/N #??? My hero is oc'ed an loving it.. depending on what rom i use that day..some get hot, some FC some things...but a few are flawless fer me with a lil tweek here an there
Overclocked to 710 (too squemish to get the higher kernel) and though it sucks through battery like no tomorrow, and the fact that... well.. it didn't speed any lag in the os itself, games and graphics work a hell of a lot quicker!
ROM - Bittersweet v1.2/stock radio/using DialerOne/LauncherPro
Kernel - Toast-godmode OC .29 kernel for DamageControl/based roms
Neocore:
1.5 - 12fps
2.1 - 24/28fps
w/oc kernel - 30/32.8fps
@lokipipin, the OC wants to find if there is a correlation of phones serial number differences to the freq. of people who can't overclock (i.e. it could be a revision, or even a ****ty batch of pcbs or something, and that could be tracked by s/n)

Well, there's not much i can do with your serial number that will harm you, so don't worry. But i'm looking to find a correlation between serial numbers and chip revisions, which would in turn let us know based on serial number if you can OC and etc.
We did this with the PS3 world a long time ago and it was pretty helpful, i'm surprised no one did it sooner.
And only based off the two that i have already, i can say that maybe the D batch was manufactured with lower quality chips. But that's only based off of two results, just imagine if i had more to compare.

What exactly does this do? What does this actually change as far as the rom files? Can i flash this on pretty much any rom that says it OC's?

Wish I could tell you. All I know is that once I flashed it, I was able to use the OC widget. Prior to the flash it wouldn't work. I am a noob, sorry.

I can overclock the phone but cannot overclock to 768. Only 710 and staying stable.
Edited my S/N missed a character at the end.

Obviously the actual credit for that goes to person who posted it over at Android Central, beezy420. It's worked for me and several others so it's worth a shot if nothing else works for you.
I flashed it to my rooted stock 2.1 and it worked, so give it a shot.
yes my hero is OC'ed with 710
So far I have only tried to OC my Hero once. I did it with Zen's MT3G ROM and it worked, but it definitely created some heat. I think with that one it was OC'd at something like 691. Like I said, phone worked, but it DEFINITELY heated up a LOT more than normal. I can't easily access my s/n right now, so I'll have to update this post when I can.
I can OC to 787 or higher. Been running OC since day one of toast first release 1-2months ago. I have made a few kernels for myself with 787 and once with one a step higher, all booted fine with no reboots.

Alright, the first thing here is mods, if this is in the wrong forum, remove it.
Now that that's cleared up, I want to ask a question.
My nook seems (graphics wise) slow and unresponsive.
All I want to know is that if possible, can you get graphics acceleration on the Nook?
I heard someone say that it has the same chip as some other phone (I don't remember) and that they got graphics accel. on that phone. So is there a way here?
Thanks.
It has it.
Get the latest stable and get the test OC'd kernel, set to 1.3 GHz.
Also, ditch ADW and use LauncherPro.
That's weird. My friend told me that he got graphics accel. and his thing runs faster.
And I already have CM7 (Stable) with 1.3 GHz using LPPSense
...then ditch LauncherPro (bloated [email protected]#$ of a launcher) and use Zeam launcher
If you are running CM7 off uSD make sure it is a SanDisk
Alright, looks like it does have it. I'm gonna go ask that friend what he did...?
Apparently he copied everything from /etc to /system/etc. Now it goes faster.
wtf....?

Did you try this on your Nook yet?
u check graphic processor with graphic apps.
not if in general the NC has some lag which can be bad sd card, problem with installed apps etc.
check if U have abobe flash installed and if the oc kernel works right.
Yes, I tried this, and I see a small difference.
Definite Newbie question - I've found multiple threads about this, but they all have different start points and I have no interest in bricking the first day.
I have a brand new NC that was 1.1 out of the box. I used Autonooter 3.0 to get root, and then installed Phiremod 6.2.
Everything works great, except that I am now maxed out at 925 mhz. I really want to see how this handles with 1100mhz overclock running.
What is the process to install the OC kernel on top of this? I am new to android, and even newer to CWM. I have flashed it to 3.0.2.8 with ROM manager. I just need a little help with installing the OC kernel.
What say you gents?
For the other newbs that no doubt have this question:
You need to flash only the kernal... Reboot into CWM recovery mode.
The 040411 is the stable 1100mhz... the 042411 is the less stable 1300mhz kernel.
Make sure you grab the appropriate kernel for your install: SD vs eMMC
Save it to the root of your SD card
Once you are booted into CWM recovery:
Wipe the Cache partition
Advanced --> wipe Dalvik cache
Install from SD card - select the kernel zip
Then reboot. You should now have the option to push your NC further.

Thanks for this! I'm running 4/24 and not really having any issues at 1200 mhz, but would rather have the option of 1100 mhz. Seems safer.
Ooops! Word of warning: 04/11/11 did not work for me with Phiremod 6.2. Sent the NC into a boot loop. Reflashed the 4/24/11 kernel and it appears to be coming back up.

Thanks for the update - I flashed straight to 042411, running at 1300. Seems like things are moving along nicely, although the app drawer still lags a bit upon opening. Still seeing lag in the browser as well, regardless of the browser used. If I could nix these issues, I would love this little tablet.
As it is, I may return it and get a new galaxy tab... really love this form factor though. So torn.

Yes, the form factor is great. I'd like to hold an 8.9" tablet to see how it compares, but I can definitively state that 10.1" tablets with a 16x9 aspect ratio just feel awkward in my hands.
As for exchanging the Nook for a Gtab, honestly, I'd just hold on to it until 7" dual core Honeycomb tablets become affordable. I doubt you gain all that much with the current Gtab. Plus, the next gen of Samsung tablets look super sweet. Personally, I really like the new HTC tablet that comes with a pen. Great for doodling. If it drops into the $350.00 range, I'm so there.

Tried Opera Mobile Instead? Super smooth for me!
It's also recommended to use interactive as governor under cpu-settings
Is the 4/24 at 1300 stable overall for daily use?
Or is it one of those situations where just some NCs can't handle it and have to bump it down to like 1200?

U just have to try this yourshelf.
Some NC have really difficulty in handling the extra mhz..
My NC's been fine at 1200 Mhz. Too chicken to try 1300. Honestly, even at 1200 we're running 150% of what B&N intended, so even that's a little scary to me. I take comfort in the fact that we're only running these speeds when the processor is being throttled that high, though.
4/24 at 1300 runs fine for me with P6.2. No uv or anything, all stock settings.
I've been using 1300 for more than 24 hours now and I've been playing games on it nonstop as well as checking e-mails etc etc. Anyway, it seems very stable. No issues so far.
BTW, racks has released a new image for the 6.2+HC SD card install which already incorporates alsa update and OC kernel.
check it out here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045018
I've been running AOKP on my GSII for months and love the ROM but I'm unimpressed with the Nook Color version. It has really bad lag in everything I do. I'm new to hacking the NC so I'm looking for the fastest ROM out there. Something doesn't completely pale in comparison to my GS2.
Does anyone have a ROM or ROM/Kernal combo recommendation? Is it worth V6 supercharging or running anything else to help speed it up?
Thanks much
nook rom
man i agree .every rom shakie .i kinda gave up on the nook for a little while.
i put cm9 simple on my FIRE now...what a difference. my kindle fire runs cm9 awsome...
Why won't me nook run like my FIRE? (NO LAG)

Several reasons. The Fire is a much more powerful machine, dual core 1GZ out of the box, hardware video acceleration, etc.
The first step when experiencing sluggishness or lag with the nook color should be to set maximum cpu speed to not more than 1100MHx... several nook colors have been known to have issues with any clock speed above this... remember, while the cpu's they put in them are capable of running 1200MHz ideally... they rated them at 800MHz for a reason.
CPU manufacturer aren't going to deliberately under-rate their processors for no reason... and they aren't going to do it to sell them cheaper... they do it because there was something going on that they are not comfortable supplying warranty for underperforming processors.
I have also noticed that sluggishness in rather static operations (like book page turns) can be improved by raising the min to 600 from 300. At least that is how it seems. Does that make sense?
I've bumped the clock on mine to the 1000MHZ range but left the lower at 300MHZ. Does bumping the lower help with just with idle performance?
I guess my biggest problem is that I'm comparing the NC loosely to my SGS2. I know that's not fair and I need to lower my standards here. But is there a reasonable expectation that screen swipes are smooth and basic programs like Kindle, email, and web browsing will run without stuttering excessively?
Is there one ROM that stands heads and shoulders above the rest in the speed category?

It's nothing fancy, but CM 7.2 Mirage has been very responsive and stable for me. I don't do any heavy graphics games or the like, but it works well for streaming Netflix. My reader and email apps are responsive. Mirage incorporates some of the optimizations from Supercharger V6 already, so there's not a lot of twiddling required. I run mine at 1.2 GHz with no issue, and have done so for months.
It's not life in the fast lane, but it's solid and makes the NC work well for the basics I bought it for.
+1 MiRaGe-Kang. It, the Nook Color, won't play Crysis but I don't ask it to. I want to watch a TV show, (screw HD. If you have to have HD buy an Apple product and haunt *their* forums), at lunch. Listen to audio books/music as I'm traveling, read something at night and beep me awake. Throw in the occasional solitaire, Angry Birds or Tetris to kill time in line and you've got the idea.
I follow the updates for fun but for the average user I would recommend that you just make sure the latest update is stable, apply it and not worry about it anymore until you start wondering about ICS or Jelly Bean.
Wow, this is definitely faster than the AOKP I was running. Noticed a big difference right away. Odd because AOKP is based on CM9 I think. Guess CM7 is just a better fit.
Thanks everyone for your responses
Good day. After much soul searching, I finally got the enthusiasm to root and upgrade my Transformer. I have had no major problems with the stock ICS (.27), so I wasn't in any rush to change things...no random shutdowns or reboots and the batteries lasted forever. My biggest issue was the speed...it was pretty darned clunky.
I tried a CM10 ROM...and there was a lot I liked about it...and some I didn't. The over/underclocking was excellent, as was the speed and stability but I had big problems opening backed up files. Since I was basically satisfied with ICS, I decided to try an ICS ROM.
Since I don't have much experience choosing ROMs, the choice is basically a crap shoot for me. I chose the ENERGY ICS ROM...and so far, I like it. My files open with ease and it's a very nice interface.
Is there an overclocking utility?
After searching hither and yon, I stumbled on to No Frills overclocking utility. So far, it's up and running and seems to be working without issue. I have it overclocked to 1.5 and underclocked to 312mhz, using the 'on demand' profile.
I'll update on occasion in case someones curiosity just needs to be slaked.
That works fine.. or use Antutu CPU master free. It works great... just don't get too crazy with the overclocking.
By the way.. ondemand seems to be a good governor for phones. For tablets, I would recommend the interactive governor.
