[Q] Nook Color CM7 Graphics Acceleration - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright, the first thing here is mods, if this is in the wrong forum, remove it.
Now that that's cleared up, I want to ask a question.
My nook seems (graphics wise) slow and unresponsive.
All I want to know is that if possible, can you get graphics acceleration on the Nook?
I heard someone say that it has the same chip as some other phone (I don't remember) and that they got graphics accel. on that phone. So is there a way here?
Thanks.

It has it.
Get the latest stable and get the test OC'd kernel, set to 1.3 GHz.
Also, ditch ADW and use LauncherPro.

That's weird. My friend told me that he got graphics accel. and his thing runs faster.
And I already have CM7 (Stable) with 1.3 GHz using LPPSense

...then ditch LauncherPro (bloated [email protected]#$ of a launcher) and use Zeam launcher
If you are running CM7 off uSD make sure it is a SanDisk

Alright, looks like it does have it. I'm gonna go ask that friend what he did...?

Apparently he copied everything from /etc to /system/etc. Now it goes faster.
wtf....?

Did you try this on your Nook yet?

u check graphic processor with graphic apps.
not if in general the NC has some lag which can be bad sd card, problem with installed apps etc.
check if U have abobe flash installed and if the oc kernel works right.

Yes, I tried this, and I see a small difference.

[Poll] Phone Overclocking

So, as the title says this is a poll about phone over clocking.
Who's phone is capable of overclocking and who's isn't?
My goal is to find out if there is a way to tell if you can overclock or not based on the phones s/n.
Procedure:
So pick the proper answer on the poll, then if you could please make a post saying whether you can or cannot overclock along with your s/n.
Works
S/N=HTO2SHF05245 B
Doesn't
HT03GHF05302 JV002-00 D
mine does 768..without a hitch.. and doesnt get hot either..will post the sn when i can check my phone.
Example post/my results
I cannot and my serial number is HT03GHF05302 JV002-00 D.
my hero can, yes
I tried several methods of OCing, and finally found one that works for me on another site. I'll PM it to you since I don't know what the rules are on posting links to other sites here.
In short, yes I can, but only using a certain method.

Can you PM me? I'd like to hear about it.
been oc since Toast released his kernel, but I do still get the random fc on incoming calls once or so a week. its annoying but if the call was important they leave a message. The difference in speed is worth it.
OC to 768 with no issues.

D3fault sent me the link and now I can OC up to 710 (768 freezes me). Before he sent me the zip file for the OC stuff I could not run any OC ROM's, no overclock widget, or setcpu. Now I can run overclock widget (LWP flies now) and setcpu. Still can't get all OC'd ROM's to load but it is worlds better than it was.
Lastly, I do get some heat though, oh well.
Here is the link for those who can't get their hero to overclock, try this (courtesy of D3fault, not me). Download and add to your SD, flash, download overclocking program of choice (I really like the OC widget in the market) and done.

I can over clock, have been overclocked and remained on for over a day now. Battery temperature is 24.7 and thats under constant texting and web-browsing throughout the day. Ive downloaded a couple apps as well.
S/N=HTO2SHF05245 B
Ummm, why do you want my S/N #??? My hero is oc'ed an loving it.. depending on what rom i use that day..some get hot, some FC some things...but a few are flawless fer me with a lil tweek here an there
Overclocked to 710 (too squemish to get the higher kernel) and though it sucks through battery like no tomorrow, and the fact that... well.. it didn't speed any lag in the os itself, games and graphics work a hell of a lot quicker!
ROM - Bittersweet v1.2/stock radio/using DialerOne/LauncherPro
Kernel - Toast-godmode OC .29 kernel for DamageControl/based roms
Neocore:
1.5 - 12fps
2.1 - 24/28fps
w/oc kernel - 30/32.8fps
@lokipipin, the OC wants to find if there is a correlation of phones serial number differences to the freq. of people who can't overclock (i.e. it could be a revision, or even a ****ty batch of pcbs or something, and that could be tracked by s/n)

Well, there's not much i can do with your serial number that will harm you, so don't worry. But i'm looking to find a correlation between serial numbers and chip revisions, which would in turn let us know based on serial number if you can OC and etc.
We did this with the PS3 world a long time ago and it was pretty helpful, i'm surprised no one did it sooner.
And only based off the two that i have already, i can say that maybe the D batch was manufactured with lower quality chips. But that's only based off of two results, just imagine if i had more to compare.

Wish I could tell you. All I know is that once I flashed it, I was able to use the OC widget. Prior to the flash it wouldn't work. I am a noob, sorry.

I can overclock the phone but cannot overclock to 768. Only 710 and staying stable.
Edited my S/N missed a character at the end.

Obviously the actual credit for that goes to person who posted it over at Android Central, beezy420. It's worked for me and several others so it's worth a shot if nothing else works for you.
I flashed it to my rooted stock 2.1 and it worked, so give it a shot.
yes my hero is OC'ed with 710
So far I have only tried to OC my Hero once. I did it with Zen's MT3G ROM and it worked, but it definitely created some heat. I think with that one it was OC'd at something like 691. Like I said, phone worked, but it DEFINITELY heated up a LOT more than normal. I can't easily access my s/n right now, so I'll have to update this post when I can.
I can OC to 787 or higher. Been running OC since day one of toast first release 1-2months ago. I have made a few kernels for myself with 787 and once with one a step higher, all booted fine with no reboots.

Over Clock Kernel - wifi error

I am running CM6 A013 with oc-legend-cm-2.6.29.6 kernel. Everything seems to be working just fine except for the wifi. Has anyone gotten the wifi to work with the oc kernels?
I read in another thread that we could take the wlan.ko file from an old ROM. Does anyone have a copy of this file or would anyone be willing to pull the file so that I can test it? I really appreciate it.
same situation here. neither kernels work with cm6's wifi and hotspot. can someone fix this please! i really want my wifi back! i didnt do a backup before hand!
Im looking at this and it looks easier than just replacing the entire kernel like you guys did, read here from that guy's post above:
"How to do it for kernel_legend_13be9c9c:
At first, you should read zanfur's post and his patch.
I just modified two tables in acpuclock-arm11.c excluding his having written.
1. modify cpufreq.c to let SetCPU to access freq tables
2. modify acpuclock-arm11.c to let HTC Legend be able to overclocking
3. modify msm7227_defconfig to disable PERFLOCK [optional]
You might not need modify defconfig when you use SetCPU which can purchase in Android Market.
SetCPU can disable PERFLOCK by setting. ([menu] -> [Perflock Disabler])"

So, with that said, I would take that file or file(s) and replace them with the ones in our current kernel made for our phone... might work and your wifi won't be broken.
You guys are running a kernel made for a different device.
could some one say in plain english the exact steps to get the old kernel back? the one from CM6

That kernel is not built for our wifi chip. The kernel needs to be built for the BCM chipset and not the TI. Further, the wifi module needs to be in sync with the kernel build. Android 101.
I am not sure what we are going to gain from overclocking. There just doesn't seem to be any end goal, other than bragging rights on a benchmark where the Aria can only hope to be among the best of the mediocre CPUs. If it's for flash - forget it. We don't have the instruction set required in the CPU. The downside is the potential to add instability and confuse test results for mods that can actually increase functionality.
I like overclocking and running a couple benchmarks once in a while. For day to day use I'm more interested in downclocking but only if it can increase battery life.
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
the extra speed of the OC makes a big different on the games, that's the reason I like it... Games run smoother with the OC kernel.... do the test.. try to run Abduction with the stock Kernel for a while and then with the OC.. you'll see the difference... also Live Wallpapers with the stock kernel is choppy... it is smooth with the OC.
Hell my nexus one has been over clocked since the day I got it (rooted that same day ) not that a 1ghz phone really needs it. Well the Nexus One maybe for gaming but my Captivate and Vibrant on the other hand doesn't need it period. You won't get better performance gaming with any other android handset out there to date. Still my Captivate is over clocked to 1.2ghz lol. Like I say there's something fun about pushing the limits.
It really just another thing to tweak and play around with on your device. It's always fun to push the limits.
There are several reason why I would like to overclock. 1. The 3D photo gallery loads photos really slow with the stock kernel, but with an overclocked kernel the pics loaded very quickly. 2. It's nice to run a 3D game or two without chopping. Just to name a couple. It would be nice to have an Aria kernel that works with all of the phones hardware. And showing off benchmark number is nice as well.

[Q] OC Kernel install with Phiremod6.2 and stock kernel

Definite Newbie question - I've found multiple threads about this, but they all have different start points and I have no interest in bricking the first day.
I have a brand new NC that was 1.1 out of the box. I used Autonooter 3.0 to get root, and then installed Phiremod 6.2.
Everything works great, except that I am now maxed out at 925 mhz. I really want to see how this handles with 1100mhz overclock running.
What is the process to install the OC kernel on top of this? I am new to android, and even newer to CWM. I have flashed it to 3.0.2.8 with ROM manager. I just need a little help with installing the OC kernel.
What say you gents?
For the other newbs that no doubt have this question:
You need to flash only the kernal... Reboot into CWM recovery mode.
The 040411 is the stable 1100mhz... the 042411 is the less stable 1300mhz kernel.
Make sure you grab the appropriate kernel for your install: SD vs eMMC
Save it to the root of your SD card
Once you are booted into CWM recovery:
Wipe the Cache partition
Advanced --> wipe Dalvik cache
Install from SD card - select the kernel zip
Then reboot. You should now have the option to push your NC further.

Thanks for this! I'm running 4/24 and not really having any issues at 1200 mhz, but would rather have the option of 1100 mhz. Seems safer.
Ooops! Word of warning: 04/11/11 did not work for me with Phiremod 6.2. Sent the NC into a boot loop. Reflashed the 4/24/11 kernel and it appears to be coming back up.

Thanks for the update - I flashed straight to 042411, running at 1300. Seems like things are moving along nicely, although the app drawer still lags a bit upon opening. Still seeing lag in the browser as well, regardless of the browser used. If I could nix these issues, I would love this little tablet.
As it is, I may return it and get a new galaxy tab... really love this form factor though. So torn.

Yes, the form factor is great. I'd like to hold an 8.9" tablet to see how it compares, but I can definitively state that 10.1" tablets with a 16x9 aspect ratio just feel awkward in my hands.
As for exchanging the Nook for a Gtab, honestly, I'd just hold on to it until 7" dual core Honeycomb tablets become affordable. I doubt you gain all that much with the current Gtab. Plus, the next gen of Samsung tablets look super sweet. Personally, I really like the new HTC tablet that comes with a pen. Great for doodling. If it drops into the $350.00 range, I'm so there.

Tried Opera Mobile Instead? Super smooth for me!
It's also recommended to use interactive as governor under cpu-settings
Is the 4/24 at 1300 stable overall for daily use?
Or is it one of those situations where just some NCs can't handle it and have to bump it down to like 1200?

U just have to try this yourshelf.
Some NC have really difficulty in handling the extra mhz..
My NC's been fine at 1200 Mhz. Too chicken to try 1300. Honestly, even at 1200 we're running 150% of what B&N intended, so even that's a little scary to me. I take comfort in the fact that we're only running these speeds when the processor is being throttled that high, though.
4/24 at 1300 runs fine for me with P6.2. No uv or anything, all stock settings.
I've been using 1300 for more than 24 hours now and I've been playing games on it nonstop as well as checking e-mails etc etc. Anyway, it seems very stable. No issues so far.
BTW, racks has released a new image for the 6.2+HC SD card install which already incorporates alsa update and OC kernel.

Gaming rom

What is the best rom/firmware for gaming ?
In the ICS roms its reboot a loot.
Sent from my R800i
Stock gingerbread with DooMKerneL. Remove bloatware apps and stop excess services. Can't get a better gaming experience than that (though some say V6 supercharger helps)
Can someone give me the links ?
What gingerbread ?
Sent from my R800i
Stock is defintely what you want for gaming alright. I'd go with a stock based ROM so that most of the bloat is removed for you and not weighing down your device.
Something like JokaWild.
EDIT: by the sounds of it, you are going to have to do some research. Start by looking into flashtool.
Just noticed my above comment may have sounded condescending. It wasn't meant to be. Since you have flashed ICS successfully, I imagine you know how to flash a stock ROM.
From my experience Jokawild was the best gingerbread rom for gaming

What about for a R800x?
I have tried several different ROMS and not that these other ROMs are not awesome in their own right. But I always come back to my nandroid of stock Android 2.3.3
I rooted, then deleted all bloat in the system folder, and all the other apps that can be reinstalled to SDcard, map, talk, gmail, etc. I have around 180mb of free space according to my system/apps folder. I then used V6 Supercharger and set everything to aggressive with Nitro Lag. Now my phone is super speedy. I have no lag anywhere, all games play buttery smooth including GL games. I also am using DoomKernel by DoomLord and No Frills set to Performance, CFQ at 1.2ghz (dont like to OC too much just a tiny little bump)
And I also have a Sandisk Mobile Ultra 32GB HC-I MicroSD card. Was using a class 4 sandisk proir an this card was on sale on a camera site for $30, figured why not and got it, saw a difference with GL games as well, before they were smooth with an occasional slight stutter but now its all good.
Just found it, its $3 more then what I paid but still a great price and this card is awesome.

So, I'm using an ICS rom with the new Adreno drivers, and I get better performance on Fifa 12 then I got with Gingerbread. Is there a way to install the new Adreno drivers on Gingerbread?
I have tried most to all the roms as well and I will say I got the best gaming performance with the stock 2.3.3 rom (bloatware free) with doom's kernel. This had not only the best performance but also worked with most to all games.
I would of put 2.3.4 but gmail and google voice still wont auto sync. Once verizon decides to wake up then jump to 2.3.4. Hope this helps.
You will need to use flash tool (thread) to do all your kernel and FTF flashing.
Flash this: 2.3.3 FTF
Flash this: DoomKernel + Wifi modules (thread)
Boot up like normal and go through the setup. After that install titanium backup and start ripping out all that Verizon junk.
Install SetCPU and find your overclock sweet spot. Dont forget to set a profile to underclock you phone for when your batteries low. (I found that smartassV2 scaling gave me the best performance/battery life with a 1.6 Ghz overclock.)
This is for a r800x (Verizon)
That's pretty much what I did. I have the stock overclocked kernel, which isn't overclocked, but SetCPU is set to overclock to 1.6Ghz when any of my games are running.
Thread Closed, Thank You.

Freezing

Did a search and found a couple of different threads, but no solutions.
I am running MIUI 2.4.6 and have been for several months with absolutely no problems. Two days ago, I downloaded some new themes for my wife who is going to take over my Nook after my Nexus 7 arrives.
Anyway, I installed one to see how it looked and the lockscreen was one that required a full screen swipe instead of just pulling down. Well, a full screen swipe will not work on a tablet. Was unable to unlock so I went back to CWM and did a complete wipe, data, cache...everything.... and reinstalled the rom. That's when I started getting the freezing. Sometimes it freezes after 10 minutes and sometimes it will go longer. OK, thought I might have a bad flash, so I downloaded the zip again and did the wipe and re-flashed. Same freezing. I have tried fixing permissions. I have not installed any new apps or widgets that I wasn't using before.
Any ideas?
Try one more install of the rom. Do you use anything like a clock/weather widget? Those would really mess up my MIUI roms. Did you format data, system and cache before installing? Also, it's catch-22 with the themes. Some work, but more often than not, I would run into the problem where the lock screen wouldn't unlock and I would have to start all over.

I did all the wipes each time. No weather apps....as long as the themes show a circle, or slide, or the phone icon and the msg icon, then they are ok to use.
Bueller? Bueller? Bueller? Anyone?
Oh well!
Was the previous install of the rom overclocked? Also, the V6 supercharger script may help you. It sure helped get rid off my freezes. Also, in Nook tweaks, if you are overclocking, you might want to raise the voltage of step 5 by 1 tick.

I just got a Nexus 7 and giving the Nook to my wife....just wanted her not to have any problems. And I guess if all else fails, I'll just take it back to stock
Here's some nook optimization advice I gave to another guy. Hope it helps:
Hephaestus_ said:
After a few mods, my nook is almost butter smooth. ;P Here's the things I did:
Installed latest opengl cm9 build by eyeballer.
Overclocked processor to 1.2ghz with ondemand governor for general use.
Made voltage tweak of 1 tick higher than stock on the highest processor stepping using nook tweaks.
Set highest stepping to 1.325ghz using nook tweaks.
Made high performance profile in setcpu that would only activate the 1.325 ghz when certain 3d games were opened using governor performance.
Blocked certain system apps/processes that would not be used by the nook such as the calling one to free up system ram using Gemini app manager.
Ran the v6 supercharger script to optimize system set to the max performance setting for 512hp.
Ran and turned on all other performance tweaks in the supercharger script.
Made a widget using script manager to autorun fastengineflush.sh from v6 supercharger that cleans clutter and fees up ram.
Switched launcher to adwlauncher ex to remove scroll lag between home screens.
And that is how you can have a buttery smooth experience on the nook. ;P
Best of luck,
